Hank (Billy Bob Thornton) and Leticia (Halle Berry) reconnect as lovers.

REVIEW:
Following up his critically praised films Loungers (1996), which won Best Feature at Slamdance, and Everything Put Together (2000), which won the "Someone to Watch" Independent Spirit Award for his indie drama, Marc Forster directs this powerful, race-charged romance. Billy Bob Thornton plays Hank Grotowski, a prejudiced and hard-drinking prison guard in Georgia. His father, Buck (Peter Boyle), is a dying emphysema patient, and his son, Sonny (Heath Ledger), is assigned to the execution duty on the jail's death row. Hank is saddened by Sonny's suicide and quits his work. He then descends into a profound despair until one night when he helps Leticia (Halle Berry), a stunning African-American mother whose son Tyrell (Coronji Calhoun) was struck by a car.
