An hour and a half. That's all it takes to learn techniques that could save a baby's life.
00:06
Royal Life Saving Society UK has set up baby CPR classes at Medway Sports Centre,
00:14
aimed towards helping babies between zero and one year of age.
00:19
Its teacher Donna has helped around 2,000 people so far.
00:24
It's very important that parents do come along and learn these life-saving skills.
00:30
The chances of it happening are really slim.
00:33
However, if you're in that situation, you would want to know what to do
00:37
so that you give your baby a chance of survival if they stop breathing or if they're choking,
00:44
you know, knowing how to deal with it.
00:47
The sessions involve practising with mannequins and cover situations such as drowning, choking and when an ambulance should be involved.
00:56
The charity's aim is to reduce accidental drowning by 50% in 2026
01:03
and their 2022 report revealed that 35 children in the UK have died to drowning,
01:09
enough to fill up an entire classroom.
01:12
However, the society say that funds are vital as each new mannequin costs around £250.
01:20
What I'm holding here is a life-size mannequin that the Royal Life Saving Society UK uses for its CPR classes.
01:29
It even does things such as cry whenever you perform choking profession techniques correctly.
01:37
Members of the public say the seminars have made them ready if an emergency arises.
01:43
I think it just helps us to understand what we need to do in the event of an emergency
01:49
and I think a lot of people would panic and this would just give you what you need to make the best of the situation.
01:56
Royal Life Saving Society UK says money donated to them will be going towards keeping the classes going for the public.
