Farmers' protests reach Brussels as discontent with EU's green agenda grows

Farmers held demonstrations outside the European Parliament in Brussels on Wednesday as protests against environmental legislation and other grievances spread across the continent.

00:00 Farmers` protests that have spread across the continent have reached Brussels, although

00:04 with less force than in France or Germany. But the participation of several far-right

00:09 MEPs has raised concerns about the possible capitalization of the farmers` anger. Around

00:15 100 farmers from several EU countries gather in front of the European Parliament to protest

00:21 against the EU`s green policies and free trade agreements.

00:25 "We want to say that in France, as in other European countries, it is not people in white

00:32 collars who will decide, who have no notion of what is the hardness and the difficulty

00:38 of producing good products in France. And stop also, as we put it on our signs, stop

00:45 imports, with imports that have no standards."

00:50 Opposition to the Green Deal and the EU`s free trade agreements among farmers` organizations

00:55 has increased in recent months. They fear its impact on an already economically damaged

01:00 sector. Far-right parties present at the protests said they back the farmers.

01:05 "In our case, it is political conviction. We vote against the common agricultural policy

01:12 that produces a reduction of the quantities of the aid that our farmers deserve. I think

01:18 that the European People`s Party is doing it for party interest, because they see that

01:23 there is a social mobilization in big places in Europe and they are trying to react."

01:29 Copacorjeca, Europe`s leading farmers` organization, did not take part in the protests, claiming

01:35 that the organizers of the demonstrations do not belong to it.
