Chichester's Newest Art Gallery

Bill Strohacker spoke to us about his new art Gallery called Kunst. It's on 39 South Street in Chichester.

00:00 I'm Bill Strohacker. I run the Kunstgalerie, Contemporary Art Gallery in Chichester.

00:08 We've only been open a few months and I also run an independent graphic design course

00:14 which has been running for the past seven years.

00:17 We've only been open about three or four months and actually the response has been excellent.

00:22 We've had a constant flow of people in and out, coming in and looking at the artworks.

00:27 Obviously we're more independent and we have things like graffiti art, contemporary street art

00:37 and also abstract, which is our main body of works that we display.

00:44 One of the thoughts of opening this was to make it accessible.

00:48 Mainly galleries feel a little bit zandovish, a little bit difficult.

00:52 Most people don't really like walking into a gallery

00:55 so the idea was to have a gallery that was open and accessible to everybody.

01:00 One of the areas that we're quite keen on developing is having art that's affordable.

01:08 Generally we start at very low prices. You can buy some for £30 for example.

01:14 But we have got a lot of interest with gorillas.

01:21 We've got a good link to gorillas and also able to produce and sell posters that are affordable.

01:31 We do have lots of limited edition artworks but we also have posters available around the £65 mark as well.

01:39 I think the key thing here is connection for a lot of people.

01:43 By having artworks that are old and new, so we've got some quite well-known names

01:50 but we've also got newer artists, local artists that we're displaying.

01:55 One of our things is that we want to display several new artists every few months

02:01 alongside some well-known names as well.

02:06 Recently we just had a new guy, Leo Leaver, whose work is abstract.

02:16 He uses spray paints and flat colours, so it's quite straight contemporary.

02:22 We've also got Louise Duggan who's a local artist who works with paint and neon.

02:30 We have some of my own works in. I'm an abstract artist as well, local.

02:36 I do large abstracts using lots of black and whites and contemporary abstract-y type imagery.

02:48 We've also got T-Boy, who's a local artist who creates very graffiti street art style.

03:01 We've got quite a mixture going on at the moment.
