00:00 As always, my friends, remember, it's just a theory. A Game Theory!
00:05 Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we're counting down our picks for the most
00:09 popular YouTubers who stepped away from the platform, whether briefly or permanently.
00:13 "I don't know when or if I come back, but when I do, it won't be weekly,
00:17 at least not in this format, not here."
00:18 Number 20. Joji "Filthy Frank"
00:21 By the early 2010s, vlogging had become all the rage,
00:25 and George Miller looked to satirize the concept. He created the character Filthy Frank,
00:29 and later started the channel TV Filthy Frank to focus entirely on his odd creation.
00:34 "My favorite animes consist of Toy Story, Cory in the House,
00:38 airplane instruction videos from the 80s."
00:40 Despite his rather hostile and shocking sense of humor, Filthy Frank became a cultural phenomenon,
00:45 launching numerous memes and even starting the Harlem Shake trend of 2013.
00:50 Remember that? It was a good time.
00:57 But Miller announced in 2017 that he was permanently retiring the character,
01:01 citing health conditions that were interfering with his work, as well as general disinterest.
01:06 He then pursued a career in music, and now performs under the stage name Joji.
01:10 Number 19. Tom Scott
01:20 Success can really take its toll. The always informative YouTuber Tom Scott published a
01:25 video in January of 2024, declaring that he would no longer be making videos for his channel,
01:30 and his millions of subscribers.
01:32 The reality was, while he loved the work itself, maintaining the quality of his content would
01:45 either require more work or more employees, neither of which were optimal or sustainable
01:50 options for Scott.
01:54 It's sad to see a truly educational channel no longer exist,
01:57 but we hope that Scott continues to spread his knowledge wherever he ventures next.
02:01 Number 18. Venetian Princess
02:04 Ready for a throwback? Venetian Princess was one of the biggest names in YouTube in the late 2000s,
02:09 known primarily for her music parodies. Her "7 Things" spoof gained widespread recognition
02:15 and praise, while her subscriber count was for a time, unprecedented for women on the platform.
02:20 However, Venetian Princess stopped uploading on a consistent basis in 2013,
02:29 but occasional videos have still appeared throughout the years as a little surprise to her fans.
02:33 Recently, Venetian Princess has primarily moved to TikTok, where she humorously self-identifies as
02:42 quote "that chick that used to make parodies on YouTube."
02:44 Number 17. LeafyIsHere
02:48 We come to a disappointing story with Leafy, real name Calvin Vail. Leafy was one of the biggest
02:53 names on the platform, known for his let's plays and reaction videos. However, Leafy became the
02:58 target of intense criticism beginning in the mid-2010s, with perhaps the most well-known
03:03 coming in the form of iDubbbz's Content Cop. Most of the criticism stemmed from Leafy's
03:08 transphobia and cyber harassment. Leafy quit YouTube in 2017 until 2020. However, his career
03:15 on the platform came to an end that year when YouTube permanently banned his channel due to
03:19 continued strikes. Leafy attempted to revive his career through YouTube competitors Rumble
03:24 and Storyfire, but he has since quit both. Number 16. Jeepers Media - The Toy Channel
03:31 With one of YouTube's more silly and interesting personalities during the late 2000s,
03:35 Mike Mozart loved making videos that shared his thoughts on children's toys and games.
03:40 His biggest series was the "Fail Toy Review," where he played around and shared his dislike
03:44 for some very poorly designed toys. This was until 2012, when he decided to stop creating
03:50 videos and instead continue his work as an artist. He has since uploaded more videos,
03:55 especially since 2022, much to the delight of fans everywhere. Number 15. Waste Time Chasing Cars
04:02 A creator of a variety of content, but mainly focused on comedy sketches,
04:06 Mac Freeman just seemed to enjoy experimenting with different kinds of ideas. His most notable
04:12 video was "Lightsabers Are Fun," which was viewed over 6 million times. This was a pretty big deal
04:17 for the YouTube of 2008. He continued uploading comedy sketches to his channel until the fall
04:22 of 2012 when his last video, "In My Mind," was uploaded. This was an entry for a music video
04:28 competition, which indicated that maybe Mac had ambitions of making more serious content.
04:33 Unfortunately, he basically left the site without a word after the release of that video.
04:38 Number 14. Red Key Mon Grand Theft Auto is often the subject of online
04:43 discussion, and many people even have channels that focus exclusively on the controversial game
04:47 series. Red Key Mon was one of those channels, with videos that showcased cool stunts, short
04:52 films, and other things that revolved around GTA 5. However, during the peak of the channel's
04:57 popularity, he left without a word. This led numerous fans to speculate about the reason for
05:02 his disappearance. Some said that he wanted to move on and do something else, while others claimed
05:07 he had passed away. Thankfully, he reportedly eventually clarified that he was alive and well.
05:12 Number 13. Troye Sivan We're going way back in the YouTube time
05:17 machine for Troye Sivan. YouTube was founded in 2005, and Sivan began singing on the platform
05:22 just two years later. Its potential as a talent-sharing outlet was immediately obvious,
05:36 and Sivan took great advantage of it. In 2012, Sivan also got into vlogging on the platform.
05:42 Around this time, though, he was also taking his music more seriously,
05:46 and veered in a professional direction. Sivan signed with EMI Australia in 2013,
05:57 and has since released a number of successful albums and singles, including the Australia
06:02 top 10 hit "Happy Little Pill." In 2015, his debut solo album "Blue Neighborhood" was released.
06:08 He hasn't been a YouTuber for years, though the platform allows him to showcase his music.
06:13 Number 12. Akesha Kersi Kersi began her internet career on Tumblr,
06:25 and became widely known for creating drama and engaging in problematic behavior. Kersi eventually
06:31 moved to other social outlets, including Instagram and YouTube, where she continued
06:35 chronicling her personal life. This included a famous relationship with her now ex, musician
06:40 Jairus Kersi, with whom she eventually had three children. Drama and criticisms about seemingly
06:46 everything, including her parenting, continued to follow Kersi throughout the years. It all ended up
06:51 being too much, and in 2021, Kersi announced that she was retiring from social media. However,
07:00 this retirement didn't last long, and Kersi returned to YouTube in 2023.
07:04 Number 11. Kingsley As a creator of pop culture-related vlogs
07:11 and videos, Kingsley became fairly popular in the early days of YouTube, earning around 1 million
07:17 views on every video that he uploaded. However, in 2014, Kingsley decided that making this content
07:23 wasn't exactly something that he enjoyed anymore. He explained that the platform was becoming more
07:27 of a business for certain people, and this caused him to take a break for a while. However, after
07:32 years of inconsistent uploads, he returned to making videos more regularly in 2017.
07:38 Number 10. MissHannahMinks Very invested in Japanese culture,
07:42 she spent a lot of her time on YouTube cosplaying as anime characters and teaching her fans new
07:47 words and phrases with her series Japanese Word of the Week. She also frequently talked about her
07:52 love for anime and Japanese toys. However, Hannah mysteriously vanished from the platform in mid-2013,
07:58 with her last video being a vlog from Comic-Con. Since she left without announcing anything,
08:03 a lot of her fans produced conspiracy theories and compilations of evidence to figure out what
08:08 she's been up to all this time. Number 9. FPS Russia
08:12 This was a channel that was loved by millions but became overshadowed by controversies.
08:17 Many tuned in to watch a man with an exaggerated Russian accent use different weapons and to see
08:22 stuff blow up. However, the channel went on a hiatus in 2013. There were many problems behind
08:29 the scenes that are believed to have contributed to this, including the murder of a member of the
08:33 production team. While the channel made a brief comeback, it didn't last long as Kyle Myers,
08:38 the star of the videos, was arrested for possession of illegal substances in 2017.
08:44 Number 8. KevJumba A creator of many comedy sketches and vlogs
08:48 on different topics, KevJumba was known for his deadpan delivery, hilarious tangents,
08:53 and his awesome dad. Famous for his video "Nice Guys," a collaboration with fellow YouTuber Ryan
08:58 Higa, KevJumba was one of the top creators on the platform. He was even popular enough to break into
09:03 the movie business in 2014. However, everything was brought to a halt in 2015 due to a car accident.
09:10 He has publicly discussed how this accident changed his life and how the situation took away
09:14 his motivation to do anything. Luckily, Kev has since left and returned to YouTube on a few
09:19 different occasions, though it's unclear what the future holds.
09:22 Number 7. Cameron Dallas An enormously popular influencer,
09:27 Cameron Dallas got his start in 2012 by posting pranks on Vine, becoming one of the platform's
09:32 most popular figures. He was also quite prominent on YouTube, with many videos coming in 2014.
09:38 However, it was also around this time that Dallas started pursuing work off the internet.
09:43 Folks could find him on Netflix's "Chasing Cameron" in 2016, and he also started acting
09:48 professionally. In recent years, Dallas has essentially abandoned YouTube altogether,
09:54 and is now focused on a career in music. His first studio album, "Dear Scarlet," came out in 2020.
10:00 That same year, he made his Broadway debut playing Aaron Samuels in "Mean Girls."
10:05 Number 6. MatPat - The Game Theorists
10:11 You know what they say, "Always leave the fans wanting more." That's exactly what Matthew
10:16 Patrick, more commonly known as MatPat, did when announcing his retirement from his channel,
10:20 The Game Theorists. He announced that his final theory is to be published on March 9,
10:29 2024. He and his channel had been a massive hit, garnering over 18 million loyal subscribers since
10:36 its beginnings in 2009. So why did he step back? No theories needed here. According to his "Goodbye
10:42 Internet" video, he wanted to take more time for his personal life, and essentially quit while
10:46 he's ahead. However, he hasn't left his channel behind entirely. He'll just be taking on different
10:56 creative responsibilities, mostly behind the camera. Number 5. The Dolan Twins
11:08 Talk about another Vine throwback. The Dolan Twins were also prominent on the defunct site,
11:12 and started posting videos to YouTube in 2014. Their career on the platform was enormously
11:21 successful, generating well over 1 billion views and winning awards, including Choice YouTuber at
11:27 the 2016 Teen Choice Awards. The twins were also later known as part of the Sister Squad,
11:33 alongside James Charles and Emma Chamberlain. But this collaboration didn't last long,
11:39 as the Dolan Twins announced in 2019 that they were moving in a different creative direction.
11:44 They eventually started a podcast called "Deeper with the Dolan Twins," one episode of which was
11:49 titled "We're Moving On From YouTube," which says it all. Unfortunately, this podcast ended in 2021.
11:55 Number 4. Tyler Oakley Another OG YouTuber, Tyler Oakley started his
12:02 career back in 2007 while he was a student at Michigan State. He became both wickedly popular
12:12 and hugely influential, even being placed on the advocates list of 40 Under 40 in 2014.
12:18 Not only were his videos great, but Oakley was also a public advocate for LGBTQIA+ rights and
12:25 various social issues. But all good things must come to an end, and on December 15,
12:33 2020, Oakley announced he was leaving the platform through a video titled "See Ya Later."
12:37 As of January 2024, Oakley has published two more videos to the channel,
12:46 but much of his creative output has turned to Twitch.
12:49 Number 3. Fred If you were a pre-teen in the late 2000s,
12:54 then there is no doubt that you will remember this voice. Fred was a comedy channel run by
13:02 Lucas Cruikshank before YouTube became the platform it is today. The show had a very
13:07 large following, so much so that Fred reached the mainstream media with the release of three
13:12 separate movies and appearances on TV shows like iCarly. However, as time went on, the show started
13:25 to lose popularity, and by 2014, Lucas decided to stop making Fred episodes. Lucas eventually
13:31 switched gears, making content away from the Fred moniker.
13:34 Number 2. Jenna Marbles When her video "How to Trick People
13:39 Into Thinking You're Good Looking" received over 5 million views in a week, Jenna Marbles knew she
13:44 was onto something, and that something was a very long and very prominent career on YouTube.
13:53 Marbles even has the distinction of reportedly being the first YouTuber to receive a wax
13:58 sculpture at Madame Tussauds New York. So prolific was her output in the early 2010s.
14:03 But this all came to an end in June 2020, when Marbles apologized for some problematic videos
14:08 she had made in the past and announced that she was leaving her channel.

14:29 Number 1. Ray William Johnson Formerly the most subscribed channel on YouTube,
14:37 RWJ was a powerhouse on the platform, mainly through his signature show,
14:41 "Equals 3." It gained so much momentum that it seemed like it couldn't be stopped.
14:45 However, as time went by, Ray decided it was time to move on and try other things.
14:50 At the same time, he also faced problems with his network, Maker Studios. Therefore,
14:55 in 2014, he left the show. While he was replaced by a number of different hosts,
15:00 most of them were met with extreme backlash from fans. Ray eventually returned to the platform,
15:06 but with different content. Are there any other YouTubers who left the platform that you miss?
