Vincent Kompany was honest with Luton Town winger Andros Townsend over his decision to retract to the contract on offer to him in the summer.

00:00 The chance to witness an exceptional professional, I think he came to us, he was on the back
00:05 of maybe more than 18 months not playing.
00:12 So everything we witnessed was a player that was in first, out last, really trying to do
00:20 everything he could to get his body right.
00:23 And that did a lot of work before even joining us, but we were just a part of that.
00:28 And then in the end I was just extremely honest with him.
00:31 We offered him a contract because we had a short-term need that we thought was going
00:37 to be because there was a thing with Wilson Odeberr that needed paperwork and he wasn't
00:42 signing in time and then the season was about to start.
00:45 We had Lukaku Oluoescu who, we didn't have a clue, was going to be hitting the ground
00:49 this fast and this hard.
00:51 We thought Brun Larsson wasn't sure because he hadn't played for a while at Hoffenheim.
00:57 I think we had, I can't remember if it was Benny injured or something.
01:01 So there was a succession of things where we had very few players available and because
01:07 of that we offered him a contract and because he did really well.
01:11 But then afterwards when Luka came in and he trained with us for one week, when Odeberr
01:17 came in, Brun Larsson was way fitter than we thought he was going to be.
01:22 There's no point in bringing a senior player who's working the way he's working to just
01:29 stall him.
01:30 I think him having the option to play for Luton is the right option for his career and
01:36 I explain that to him as well.
01:39 All we do is try and be as truthful as we can.
01:43 So we didn't play games with it.
01:46 The contract was there because we had a short-term need and the moment that Koloescu and these
01:50 other guys came in and performed how they did, we kind of let him know that this is
01:56 probably not the right move.
01:59 But things always work out for people with his mentality, with the way he works.
02:04 So he ended up now, I think, in a club where hopefully he can still add many years to his
02:11 career and I think that was ultimately the goal for him and that's the good thing for him.
