00:07 24 teams are competing in what is the 34th edition of the soccer tournament.

00:15 This year it's hosted by Ivory Coast and that could be an advantage.

00:21 Of the past 33 tournaments, exactly a third have been won by the tournament hosts.

00:28 For the Ivorians, it's the second time that football's come home, but the host with the most, that's Egypt.

00:37 They've hosted four times and the pharaohs have also lifted the Afghan trophy a whopping seven times.

00:44 Of course to win, you need to score. Enter Samuel Eto'o.

00:50 He holds the record for the most Afghan tournament goals. That's 18 between 2000 and 2010.

00:58 As for the fastest goal, 23 seconds. That was Egypt's Ayman Mansour playing against Gabon in 1994.

01:08 But Ivorians may be hoping to channel the late striker Laurent Pogu.

01:13 His five goals in a 6-1 drubbing of Ethiopia in 1970 remains the most scored by a player in a single Afghan match.

01:22 Indeed, this year's match ball is called Pogu in his honour.

01:28 For this year's tournament, Ivory Coast has built four new stadia and renovated two in major cities.

01:34 That's with an investment, it says, of more than $1 billion.

01:40 The tournament runs from January 13th to February 11th.
