00:07 right here in Trinidad and Tobago, right here at Phoenix Park Industrial Estate for the

00:13 markets of North America and other parts of the Americas and I dare say the rest of the

00:18 world.

00:19 Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley as he spoke during the official opening of the Phoenix

00:22 Park Industrial Estate.

00:24 The last Samsonite suitcase I bought was proudly branded "Made in Europe".

00:32 The one I have today is branded "Made in Trinidad and Tobago".

00:41 And I dare say that the one that says "Made in Trinidad and Tobago" kind of looks better

00:47 and certainly feels a bit stronger.

00:50 TV6 News understands the Prime Minister was referring to the first shipment of luggage

00:55 exported to North America on December 1st last year by the first tenant of the Phoenix

01:00 Park Industrial Estate, Summit TT Luggage, a company based in China.

01:05 The industrial estate is the first such project in the Caribbean following Prime Minister

01:09 Rowley's official visit to China in 2018 when a Memorandum of Understanding was signed making

01:15 Trinidad and Tobago the first Caribbean state to officially sign on to China's Belt and

01:21 Road Initiative.

01:22 As part of the commitment by Beijing Construction Engineering Group to design and construct

01:28 the park, there is an agreement to bring at least 10 investors to help drive the productive

01:35 capacity of the park and raise its international profile.

01:41 This will not only create new jobs but new foreign direct investment which will bring

01:48 with it new ideas, new business models and new products and services.

01:56 While the Phoenix Park Industrial Estate is under the state-owned ETEC, the project is

02:00 also the result of work by the Ministry of Trade and Industry, state-owned Invest TT,

02:06 Beijing Construction Engineering Group and China's Embassy in Trinidad and Tobago.
