Orin Belle's Fatal Crash @ Mainstay Lake 2012

The 12th edition of the annual Lake Mainstay Regatta held in the Essequibo region, Guyana, on the north coast of South America, on Sunday, 12 August 2012, was suspended in consequence of a fatal accident that resulted in the death of the popular Guyana powerboat racer Orin Belle.

On the second lap of the first race of the program, Orin Belle collided with the other boat, named "3:16" and piloted by Dave Younge, while negotiating the southern U-turn of the boat course, at the helm of his "Iron Charlie" boat. Younge took the inside of the turn and struck Belle's craft, climbing over it. The propeller struck Orin Belle.

It happened around 11h45. Younge escaped unhurt. Rescuers spent some 15 minutes to pull Belle from the water and the injured man was taken to Suddie Hospital in the back of a pick-up truck. Orin Belle, 42-year-old from Bartica, Guyana, was pronounced dead at Suddie Hospital some 45 minutes after the accident.
