L'Éthiopie a affirmé que l'accord maritime qu'elle a signé avec la région séparatiste du Somaliland ne viole "aucune loi", en réponse à la colère suscitée en Somalie par ce texte considéré comme "illégal" et contre lequel des habitants de la capitale ont manifesté mercredi.

Ce "memorandum d'accord" signé lundi a ravivé les craintes d'un regain de tension entre les deux voisins aux relations historiquement tumultueuses.

Le président somalilandais Muse Bihi Abdi a affirmé lundi qu'en échange l'Ethiopie allait "reconnaître formellement la république du Somaliland", ce qu'aucun pays n'a fait depuis qu'elle a proclamé unilatéralement son indépendance de la Somalie en 1991.

Les autorités somaliennes ont condamné ce texte jugé "illégal", dénonçant une "agression" éthiopienne et "une violation flagrante de (sa) souveraineté".

Dans un communiqué mercredi, le gouvernement éthiopien a assuré qu'"aucune partie, ni aucun pays ne sera affecté par ce memorandum d'accord".
