00:00 An armed drone was shot down on Tuesday over Erbil airport in northern Iraq, where US and
00:06 other international forces are stationed, two security sources said.
00:11 The Iraqi Semi-Autonomous Kurdistan Region's security agency, Kurdistan Counter-Terrorism,
00:17 said in a statement an armed drone fired by illegal militia against Erbil airport was
00:21 shot down at 9.52 am Iraq time.
00:25 It was not clear whether the fourth attack caused any damage or casualties, said the
00:30 sources.
00:31 The incident followed the shooting down of a drone over Erbil airport by air defence
00:34 systems on Sunday evening.
00:36 A group called Islamic Resistance in Iraq said it was behind that attack.
00:41 US and international forces based in Iraq and across the border in Syria have been on
00:45 high alert amid dozens of attacks on their bases since the Israel-Hamas war began in
00:50 October.
00:52 On Sunday, the Ain al-Assad base in Iraq's western desert housing US troops faced another
00:57 security threat as two drones were successfully intercepted and destroyed.
01:02 This incident comes just a month after the same base was targeted by an armed drone.
01:06 The US military promptly activated the CRAM defence system to neutralise the drones, according
01:12 to reports from the Iraqi military.
01:15 Attributing such attacks to Iran-linked Iraqi factions, the US has consistently held them
01:20 responsible for these security breaches.
01:23 Since the beginning of the year, there have been a total of 39 attacks against US interests
01:28 in Iraq.
01:29 While the majority of these incidents involved bombings targeting logistics convoys, 14 were
01:35 rocket attacks, some of which were claimed by pro-Iran factions.
01:39 The objective behind these attacks is often seen as a strategy to exert pressure on Washington,
01:44 with the ultimate goal of persuading the withdrawal of all US troops from the region.
