Storyboard - Ladies in Charge (1985) (Pilot episode)
The pilot episode of what became a 1986 ITV series. Three women return to civilian life after working as ambulance drivers during WW1, only to find themselves bored with their old lives. When one of their number, Vicky Barton, discovers a young boy on his own on a train, the trio are intrigued and set out to investigate. And their experience inspires them to set up a Ladies' Agency of their own to help out others. However, being a woman in 1919 means they face a number of barriers to their ambitions...

Starring Carol Royle, Julia Hills and Amanda Root as the three leads, with support including Terence Hardiman, Raymond Francis, Evelyn Laye, Orlando Wells, Rosemary Williams, Jonathan Elsom, Graham Pountney, Graham Chinn, John Bott and Richenda Carey. This was originally a Storyboard episode in 1985, but was striking enough for ITV to commission it as a series the following year. Part mystery/ part drama series, this period series is hard to catagorize, and that may of contributed to it only lasting for one series. However, it is also easy to see in this pilot episode why ITV thought there was milege in this idea, and it certainly has a lot of charm here. This is from my own collection, and has rarely been repeated since it's last broadcast in 1986, so a chance to see a forgotten curio. It also gives people a chance to see a young Julia Hills (pre 2point4 children fame) and Amanda Root in her screen debut.
