00:00 not only a giant in the world of television,
00:02 but a great man who was one of the most important
00:05 and impressive people I ever had the pleasure of meeting.
00:09 His name was Norman Lear.
00:11 Norman was the genius who brought us
00:13 some of the greatest television shows
00:15 and characters of all time, all in the family.
00:18 Good Times, The Jeffersons, Maud,
00:21 The Facts of Life, Different Strokes,
00:23 Sanford and Son, One Day at a Time,
00:26 Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman, Fernwood Tonight,
00:29 it's an incredible list and he was an incredible person.
00:32 He changed situation comedy in the best way possible.
00:36 He taught us so much about so many serious things,
00:40 always making us laugh while he did it,
00:42 and everyone who works in or even watches television
00:46 owes him a great debt, especially me.
00:49 I was fortunate enough to work with Norman
00:51 on several projects over the last five years,
00:54 including live revivals of some of his greatest shows,
00:58 and I loved him dearly.
00:59 He was so funny.
01:02 For the holidays, the year before last,
01:04 my wife and I sent him a shirt, this shirt,
01:07 Norman effing Lear on it, and he loved it.
01:10 He wrote us a note, a thank you note,
01:12 I wanna share that with you.
01:13 Said, "Dear Molly and Jimmy,
01:15 "I can't (beep) believe this (beep) sweatshirt.
01:18 (audience laughing)
01:20 "It's something I've always wanted
01:21 "more than I can (beep) tell.
01:23 "You guys are the (beep) best,
01:25 "and I wish you the dearest, sweetest,
01:26 "greatest (beep) holiday season
01:29 "in the history of holiday (beep) seasons.
01:32 "Signed, Norman F. Lear."
01:34 His middle name was Milton, so.
01:37 Norman was 100 when he wrote that.
01:39 He died last night at 101.
01:42 101 years, and somehow it wasn't enough.
01:45 He leaves behind his wife, Lynn,
01:47 a beautiful family, and a legacy that won't ever be matched.
01:51 It would be impossible.
01:53 We were all lucky to have him.
01:55 I hope we never forget him
01:56 or the many lessons that he taught us.
01:59 One of the many, many sweet things about Norman
02:01 was he never said goodbye.
02:02 He'd say, "To be continued," and "Over and next."
02:06 And so that's how we'll leave it.
02:08 "To be continued, over and next."
02:11 I'll be right back.
