Christmas lights for charity, Sophie's Legacy

00:00 My name's Samon, we're in Portsmouth, this is my show, Cowling Christmas Light Show.

00:20 So tell us a little bit about the story behind it, what kind of made you have this kind of

00:25 set up and how long did it take? It started six years ago, I had a friend that I raised

00:31 some money for, Malaya, and she had cerebral palsy, so they needed to raise loads of money

00:39 for her to have an operation, and that's why I started the show. And ever since then I

00:47 enjoy doing it, so I carry on doing it. So I normally do Halloween first, so the majority

00:54 of it goes up, and then for the changeover to Christmas I done, I think it took me like

01:04 two hours just to change a few things over, but overall set up, from start to finish,

01:09 probably eight hours total. So by trade are you an electrician, so what's your background

01:17 there? I'm a ground worker, I spent a year learning the software before I actually done

01:22 anything, so it's a good milestone when you get that first light that lights up. You've

01:33 been doing it ever since, as you say, for six years? Six years. So tell us more about

01:37 Sophie's Legacy, how did you get involved with Sophie's Legacy? So Sophie's Legacy is

01:43 a very good charity that people that get rushed into hospital that don't have any supplies,

01:51 Sophie's Legacy is there to support these people, give these people supplies that they

01:55 need, that they don't have when they get rushed into hospital. So they do a variety of hospitals,

02:05 Southampton, they do Fairham, Portsmouth, I think they do Bristol as well, and Chichester.

02:15 And finally, so obviously that's six years out of six different charities? Yeah, every

02:21 year I choose a different charity. And how much per year have you raised? Through the

02:27 Covid times it's been a bit lower, it's about £800 most years. For the first two years

02:35 we've done about £3,000, so I'm hoping to get this money back up to where we want to

02:41 be at £3,000.
