Glasgow headlines 29 November: Plans to demolish former M&S on Sauchiehall St rejected
  • 5 months ago
Plans to demolish the 1930s Art Deco building on Sauchiehall Street that formally housed a flagship Marks and Spencers store have been rejected by Glasgow City Council.

Proposals were submitted to build student and residential accommodation on the site but these will now not be materialised.

The main reasons councillors gave for rejecting the application was the impact it would have on the conservation area and the lack of the mixed tenure on the development.

Next, ten years following the anniversary of the helicopter crash that killed ten people at the Clutha Bar, plans have been revealed that the site will now be knocked down and replaced with flats, a pub and memorial.

The owner said the decision was made to secure the future of the Clutha.

And finally, Celtic players and manager Brendan Rodgers presented the Pope with a signed jersey following their 2 nil win against Lazio in Rome.

Rodgers said the team retain their amateur spirit despite the finance now involved in the game and the gift is a reminder of that.
