00:00 G'day, I'm Paul, this is the new Mahindra Scorpio,
00:03 and given it's a off-road focused SUV,
00:06 we thought we'd do a bit of light off-roading today.
00:09 I'll run you through some of the features
00:10 that it has inside, some of the switch gear,
00:12 how it all works, and we'll see whether this
00:14 is actually a decent off-roader
00:16 in addition to being a family car.
00:17 So, today's gonna be all about off-roading only.
00:20 We have shot a video that talks about
00:22 what this is like on-road,
00:23 and I'll run you through how to find that in just a second.
00:26 If you do wanna skip ahead to other parts of this video,
00:28 you can use the time codes on the screen,
00:30 or if you're on YouTube, you can scroll down
00:31 and use the chapters below.
00:32 If you haven't done so already,
00:33 subscribe to our channel and press the bell icon
00:35 so you can find out every single time
00:37 we drive a mighty Scorpio.
00:39 Okay, so we're gonna do a little bit of light off-roading
00:43 in the Mahindra Scorpio.
00:44 We have already shot this as an on-road review,
00:47 so that runs through all the features,
00:49 the room inside, all that sort of stuff.
00:50 If you do wanna watch that,
00:51 you can click on the card on the screen there,
00:53 or go down to the link in the description below.
00:55 Today's all about some light off-roading.
00:56 We're gonna send it across our off-road course
00:58 and just give you a bit of an idea of how well this performs
01:02 if you go to the bush
01:02 and just wanna do a little bit of off-road driving,
01:05 so that will be the aim of today.
01:06 I'll run you through the four-wheel drive specs quickly.
01:08 So, has an approach angle of 27.2 degrees
01:11 and a departure angle of 21.3 degrees.
01:14 Ground clearance of just under 230 millimetres.
01:17 Wading depth isn't really that good,
01:19 and we won't be able to go through our river today
01:21 'cause it's at 650 mil.
01:23 Max wading depth for this is 500 millimetres.
01:26 In terms of the actual off-road equipment,
01:28 you have basically a system
01:29 that is two-wheel drive for sealed surfaces,
01:31 so that's driving on a regular road,
01:33 and four-wheel drive for unsealed surfaces,
01:36 so things like gravel, snow, mud, that kind of thing.
01:39 Now, the reason you can't use this in four-wheel drive
01:43 on a sealed surface is 'cause you could do damage
01:45 to the transmission and the driveline,
01:47 and to get a better idea of why that's the case,
01:50 have a look at the video that's up there
01:51 or in the link in the description below
01:52 where I explain four-wheel drive modes.
01:55 This has four-wheel drive high range,
01:56 four-wheel drive low range,
01:57 and also four different drive modes,
01:59 plus a mechanical locking rear differential.
02:02 It is an automatic locking one,
02:03 so that means that when it does detect delta in tyre speed,
02:08 it will then lock on its own.
02:09 I don't love those, but we'll see how this one performs.
02:11 We also have a hill descent control as well.
02:13 So what we're gonna do is go to our offset mogul first
02:17 in two-wheel drive high range.
02:19 So this is basically going to give us an idea
02:21 of how well the traction control system works,
02:24 and based on how well it works here,
02:26 I can move through some of these drive modes
02:27 to see if we can improve it as we go.
02:30 So we're going to get to a position
02:32 where that rear wheel on the driver's side
02:34 is lifted off the ground.
02:35 Currently we're seesawing effectively,
02:38 so we have two wheels off the ground.
02:40 Gonna roll onto the throttle here
02:41 and we'll see how well traction control works.
02:43 Wow, that is incredible.
02:45 That basically immediately just moved,
02:49 'cause that was the rear diff lock engaging there.
02:51 It detected slip immediately,
02:53 and it moved straight away.
02:55 And it actually did a really good job
02:56 because a lot of the systems like in SsangYong's,
02:59 when they do actually engage,
03:00 they give you a really big shunt
03:01 because they wait for a lot of wheels slip
03:03 before they engage,
03:04 whereas that just hooked up straight away.
03:06 I didn't even need to engage any of these settings.
03:09 That is unreal, awesome.
03:10 Okay, back we go.
03:12 Now what we're gonna do this time,
03:13 I'm going to put it into four-wheel drive high range.
03:16 Again, I'm not going to set any of these modes just yet.
03:19 So four-wheel drive high range is engaged by clicking that.
03:22 It waits until it's ready.
03:25 You can see the light flashing down there.
03:26 That is now engaged.
03:27 So currently we are sending 50% of torque
03:30 to the front axle, 50% to the rear.
03:32 Let's see how it goes now in reverse.
03:34 Traditionally, cars struggle over this
03:37 because we get to the point
03:38 where we're getting two wheels off the ground.
03:40 Such as right there.
03:44 And then I'll roll onto the throttle now.
03:45 We'll see how it goes.
03:47 Oh man, that is so good.
03:49 That is unreal.
03:51 So again, that rear diff lock engaged
03:54 and we're able to climb over that
03:55 without any problems at all.
03:56 I just yet haven't had to change any of these drive modes,
03:59 which is great.
04:00 So I think that shows you
04:01 that this is a really well-sorted system
04:03 and they've put a fair bit of effort
04:05 into engineering the all-wheel drive system.
04:07 This is a very light off-road course.
04:10 We're not doing any hardcore off-roading today.
04:11 This is a light off-road course,
04:13 but typically cars have struggled there before.
04:15 So I think the fact that this has just gone over it
04:17 without any dramas just tells you
04:19 that it is a pretty well-sorted off-road vehicle.
04:21 Okay, next up is our hill climb.
04:24 So normally I do this in low range
04:27 'cause a lot of four-wheel drive struggle getting up here
04:31 in sort of just the standard four-wheel drive high range.
04:34 So I actually set this to,
04:36 let's have a look what we got here.
04:37 We have grass, gravel, snow.
04:41 Next one along is mud rut.
04:44 That's pretty muddy.
04:45 So let's give that a shot.
04:46 I've left it in four-wheel drive high range.
04:48 See what happens.
04:49 I'll come back around and do this in four-wheel drive
04:51 low range if we need to,
04:52 but given how well it's performed so far,
04:55 anything can happen.
04:57 Holy moly, this is doing an incredible job.
05:08 That is insane.
05:10 I'm genuinely blown away by this.
05:12 As we were climbing there,
05:13 it was basically just doing everything on its own.
05:15 It was able to limit wheel slip.
05:17 It locked the rear diff.
05:19 There was nothing out of the ordinary, nothing weird.
05:22 That is seriously cool and not in low range.
05:25 That is awesome.
05:26 We'll go back again and do that in low range just for fun,
05:28 but that is great.
05:29 All right, we've got our mud bog here.
05:30 Let's drop this in.
05:32 All right, there it is.
05:33 Okay, next up, we're going to do a hill descent here.
05:36 So I'll engage hill descent control
05:38 by pushing that button there.
05:40 So that is on.
05:41 So for this, I'm gonna engage the camera as well.
05:44 So that just allows me to see over the edge there
05:47 to get my line right.
05:49 Okay, so there it is there.
05:52 And now I'll just let go of the brake
05:54 and we'll see how it goes.
05:55 That's pretty good.
05:58 So the speed I was kind of happy with there.
05:59 It wasn't too fast.
06:01 And it just tipped us over the edge and away we went.
06:03 So not too bad.
06:05 Okay, take two.
06:06 This time I'm going to put it into low range
06:08 just so we can say that we did do that.
06:10 So putting it into neutral,
06:12 press four wheel drive low range.
06:14 Wait for that.
06:15 And that's now engaged.
06:17 Put this back into drive.
06:19 Let's see how this goes now.
06:21 All right, it has switched traction control off.
06:25 So I'll be curious to see whether it performs as well.
06:28 There it is.
06:29 Rear diff is now locked.
06:31 And it's resting on the throttle there.
06:33 This car is incredible.
06:35 I'm blown away by this.
06:38 Like, look, it doesn't have a lot of the buttons
06:42 and stuff that you do find on some vehicles
06:44 like the Pajero Sport.
06:46 It has about a thousand buttons you can set.
06:48 But this just has a few basic functions
06:50 and the traction control system is incredibly good.
06:54 So yeah, I'm genuinely impressed by this.
06:58 I think they've done a fantastic job
07:00 getting all this set up.
07:01 It is just really well engineered.
07:03 Okay, last challenge we have.
07:05 What I do here in all of the SUVs that we test
07:07 is actually go up, stop, and then apply the throttle again
07:11 to see whether it will make it up on its own.
07:13 So let's give that a shot here as well.
07:15 We'll see what happens.
07:16 It's worth pointing out as well,
07:17 this isn't really on a set of mud terrains either.
07:20 It's just on a sort of fairly standard tire.
07:22 And it is doing a good job on that.
07:24 So we'll come up here,
07:26 come to a stop just there,
07:29 and then we'll roll onto the throttle and see how it goes.
07:32 We're digging a hole here.
07:36 Yeah, we are just digging a hole.
07:41 I'm gonna have to have a bit of a run up there.
07:43 Yeah, I can see it's digging a slight hole there.
07:45 So I'm gonna have to just have another crack at that.
07:48 Let's see if I can get the throttle.
07:53 There it is.
07:54 It just needs a little helping hand with the throttle there.
07:56 But yeah, still very, very impressed with this
08:00 in terms of hill climbing.
08:01 They're on a pretty muddy hill.
08:03 Okay, now let's have a look
08:06 at what the ground clearance is like here over our rocks.
08:10 So a little under 230 mils.
08:12 So I'll be curious to see how it feels over here,
08:15 especially with that Australian Ride & Handling tune
08:19 they've done on this.
08:20 Okay, so far so good.
08:23 No bottom outs.
08:25 Actually doing a good job.
08:26 I've just left this in low range.
08:27 I'm just riding the brake with the throttle
08:30 as we crawl over this.
08:32 Actually feels great.
08:33 It's really nice and comfortable.
08:34 And there's adequate clearance there
08:37 to get it across this stuff without too many dramas.
08:40 So, look, it's actually not too bad at all.
08:44 Nice.
08:45 Awesome.
08:46 So look, when we normally do our off-road
08:48 sort of stuff around here,
08:50 I normally send it through our water crossing as well,
08:52 but that's at 650 mils.
08:54 So it's gonna be too deep for today.
08:55 And this is where we're gonna leave it
08:57 for the Mahindra Scorpio.
08:58 So look, I hope you enjoyed that off-road review
09:02 of the Scorpio.
09:03 If you do wanna see what this is like
09:04 in just regular day-to-day conditions
09:06 and what it's like to live with,
09:07 have a look at our normal review,
09:08 which is in the description below.
09:10 As a car that you wanna take off-road,
09:13 this is sensational.
09:14 I was genuinely amazed by this.
09:16 I think if you put like a set of mud terrains
09:18 on this or something, this could probably go anywhere.
09:20 I'm just really impressed with it.
09:22 So yeah, hat off to Mahindra for doing such a good job
09:25 in terms of the off-road specs for this.
09:27 (upbeat music)
09:29 If you did enjoy this video,
