Goapele chatted with Billboard on the red carpet of the 2023 Give Her FlowHERS Awards Gala.
Transcript
00:00 Hey, it's Bilbert with Guapale.
00:01 How you doing tonight?
00:03 - I'm good, I'm just happy to be here.
00:05 - What does it feel like being here honoring women,
00:07 honoring black women and us getting our flowers?
00:10 - I just even love the idea and the title
00:14 of Give Her Her Flowers.
00:15 And I think everyone so far that I've heard of
00:18 that's being honored tonight from Brandy,
00:20 Tayanna Taylor, SZA, Ingrid Best,
00:24 they're all folks that I love
00:28 and I listen to and am inspired by
00:31 and some folks that I know.
00:33 And so it just feels, it feels good.
00:37 Like some light in the world to contrast
00:42 just the heaviness that's going on.
00:44 - 100%.
00:45 Now, speaking of inspiration,
00:47 you just dropped a new album last week, Colors.
00:49 Tell us more about that.
00:51 - Yeah, Colors is out now and it's an introspective album.
00:55 It's vibey, it's songs about love
00:59 and just kind of what I've been going through
01:01 the past few years.
01:03 And I feel like speaks to the hearts
01:06 and just the journey of being a woman
01:09 and learning to trust yourself and be open.
01:13 Yeah.
01:15 - So if you had to give any advice
01:17 to any up and coming R&B artist or an artist in general,
01:20 what would you give them?
01:22 - I would say have a good team around you
01:25 and know that it's gonna take a lot of work, you know?
01:29 So just be patient and say yes to things
01:34 that are in line with the bigger picture,
01:37 even more than in line with the money to start.
01:41 And then, you know, as you build your foundation,
01:44 I feel like the money comes,
01:46 but I think not leading with the money and fame,
01:49 but leading with the bigger picture,
01:51 putting in the work and having good people around you
01:54 to represent you.
01:55 - Hustle and represent.
01:57 - Yes.
01:58 - Thank you so much, Glee.
01:59 - Yeah, it's basically, you're like, boil that down.
02:01 - Yeah, no, it is though.
02:02 But like for a younger person, get that advice.
02:04 That's important.
02:05 Hustle and represent.
02:05 - Yeah, yeah.
02:07 Because it takes work.
02:10 - It does.
02:11 - And then all of a sudden, you know,
02:13 if we're lucky enough, there's breakthrough moments.
02:15 And then if we're lucky enough, there's some longevity,
02:18 but you never know.
02:19 - And you've had a lot of longevity.
02:21 - Yeah.
02:22 - Which is amazing.
02:22 I mean, like, "Closer to My Dreams"
02:24 is one of my favorite songs.
02:25 - Thank you.
02:26 - Drake actually remixed it back in the day.
02:29 - Yeah, and so many people remixed it,
02:33 unbeknownst to me, and then it would just be like,
02:34 oh, that's how you heard about it?
02:36 Okay.
02:37 You know, and it kind of got a life of its own.
02:40 - Yeah.
