00:08 - Welcome to latest TV news.
00:35 My name is Sam Morton, and I'm going to be speaking
00:37 to sports reporter, Derren Howard, about the fallout
00:39 from Brighton and Hove Albion's one-all draw
00:42 away from home against Everton,
00:44 as well as looking forward to the next matches,
00:46 first away in Amsterdam in the Europa League against Ajax,
00:50 before they face Sheffield United at the AMAX
00:52 in Premier League action on Sunday.
00:54 First, here are the headlines across East Sussex.
00:57 Thousands of people took to the streets of Lewes
01:00 for the town's much-loved annual bonfire
01:01 on Saturday, November the 4th,
01:03 despite the yellow weather warning in place.
01:06 More than 30 processions from six different societies
01:09 took place throughout the night,
01:10 with Rishi Sunak and Sweller Braverman
01:12 being among the effigies paraded through the streets
01:15 to onlookers who booed the public figures.
01:18 The night unfortunately wasn't without incident, though.
01:20 Police made three arrests during a multi-agency operation,
01:23 including that of a 31-year-old man who was arrested
01:26 after making his way towards the procession on a motorbike.
01:29 It was also found that he was in possession
01:32 of Class A and Class B drugs with the intent to supply.
01:35 He has been remanded in custody to appear
01:37 before Lewes Crown Court on December the 4th this year.
01:41 A new and sustainable way for people
01:42 to explore the world of wine has been unveiled
01:44 by an Eastbourne-based company.
01:46 Buy the Glass says it is making it simpler and cheaper
01:50 to sample new wines by offering convenient
01:52 100-milliliter servings to try out at home.
01:55 Founder Luke Mould described the current format of wine
01:58 as archaic, with consumers not being able
02:00 to sample the beverages the way they could
02:02 with spirits and beers which come in 300 milliliters
02:05 or below vessels.
02:07 The platform launched last Wednesday, November the 1st,
02:10 with a selection of more than 100 wines
02:12 and hopes to launch 300 more varieties soon,
02:14 as well as a subscription service.
02:16 In Hastings, a couple due to be married were left devastated
02:19 after the bride's wedding dress was stolen
02:21 in the middle of the night, just before they were set
02:23 to fly to New York for the big day.
02:26 Anna McGrath and Michael Watson went inside their home
02:28 in Nelson Road briefly to lock up before heading
02:31 to the airport when the theft happened at about midnight
02:34 on Thursday, October the 26th.
02:36 The couple sat in wedding dress together
02:39 with a blue woolen suit and white suitcase
02:41 were taken from their car.
02:43 Michael said at some point, probably a three-minute gap
02:46 when the car was unattended, as we were inside the house,
02:48 someone literally emptied the car of our luggage,
02:50 which contained my suit, shoes, Anna's wedding dress,
02:53 and my wallet containing my cards and driving license.
02:56 It was devastating for us.
02:59 Anna was very upset about wedding dress being stolen.
03:01 I think it's especially galling as the emotional
03:03 and the financial cost to us was so great.
03:06 The pair got married as planned a few days later in New York
03:09 with Anna wearing a black dress.
03:11 Friends of the couple are now calling for anyone
03:12 who saw something suspicious or captured anything
03:15 on a video doorbell that could help investigations
03:17 to get in touch with the police.
03:20 And finally, council leaders from across the country
03:22 are calling on the government for help with the homelessness
03:25 and temporary accommodation crisis.
03:27 The call was following from a summit held last Tuesday,
03:30 co-hosted by Eastbourne Borough Council
03:32 and the District Council's network.
03:34 Following the summit, 119 council leaders
03:36 out of the 158 who attended signed a letter
03:39 addressed to Jeremy Hunt calling for additional funding
03:42 for homelessness prevention
03:44 and an increase to local housing allowance payments.
03:47 It comes as the cost of temporary
03:49 and emergency accommodation claims in Eastbourne
03:51 were revealed to be 4.6 million pounds
03:54 in the last financial year.
03:56 This is expected to increase to 5.8 million pounds this year.
03:59 In their letter, council leaders have asked Mr Hunt
04:02 to take several concrete measures,
04:03 including an increase in local housing allowance rates,
04:07 an additional 100 million for discretionary housing payments
04:10 and 150 million top up to the homelessness prevention grant.
04:13 Now I have sports reporter Darren Howard with me
04:15 to talk about all things Brighton and Hove Albion.
04:18 Darren, how would you rate Brighton performance
04:20 at Goodington Park?
04:21 - I thought they were okay.
04:23 Obviously the result didn't go their way.
04:25 They conceded early again,
04:26 which they seem to be in a bit of a habit of that lately,
04:29 conceding early and often they find a way
04:31 to claw these goals back.
04:35 But yeah, against Everton,
04:37 they played well, they dominated possession
04:39 and they were probably the team that were really going
04:41 for the win out of the two teams.
04:43 Everton were very defensive.
04:46 They sat back and allowed Brighton,
04:48 they basically got the goal and then said,
04:51 "What have you got? Can you break us down?"
04:52 And Brighton, they kept going, they tried and they tried.
04:57 They had the goal ruled out for Lewis Dunk for VAR offside
05:02 when they thought they were back in the game,
05:05 but they kept trying.
05:06 And then in the end,
05:07 it was a deflected effort from Karim Atoma,
05:09 who was probably Brighton's real bright spark on the day.
05:13 He played so well.
05:14 And it was his effort that looped over the keeper.
05:18 So overall, yeah, pretty good performance
05:21 and a decent point.
05:22 - Yeah, would you say it is a good point
05:24 or two points dropped?
05:25 And is that win this run in the league
05:27 a cause for concern for Brighton?
05:29 - I think the expectations are so high at Brighton now.
05:34 They've performed so well.
05:35 They finished top six last season.
05:37 And the style of their football under De Serby
05:39 has been so good that I think fans almost expect them
05:42 to go against teams like Fulham
05:44 and against teams like Everton
05:47 to just go there and roll them over.
05:49 And it's not always the case.
05:51 Everton were on a decent run of form.
05:53 Fulham are a very good side as well.
05:55 They're very compact and they've got a good game plan.
05:58 Brighton should have won that game,
06:00 but again, a point,
06:02 they maybe should have got the three points,
06:04 but a point was probably about fair at the end.
06:07 And against Everton as well.
06:08 So I think overall, you look at it,
06:10 they're in the Europa League,
06:12 they're seventh in the Premier League table.
06:14 And I think that's a decent start for Brighton
06:16 considering the injuries that they've had
06:18 and still bedding in new players.
06:20 He's still a bit iffy about this,
06:22 the central midfield areas
06:23 with where they lost Moises Garcedia
06:25 and Alexis McAllister.
06:27 And I think De Serby's described the team
06:29 as feeling a little bit sick
06:30 and feeling a little bit ill at the moment.
06:32 And I think that is the area that he's referring to.
06:35 It's not quite functioning properly at the moment.
06:37 - Yeah, no, absolutely.
06:39 And you mentioned it briefly,
06:40 but Louis Dunck had a fantastic goal,
06:42 ruled out by VAR.
06:43 It was a superb volley you wouldn't really expect
06:45 from a centre-back.
06:47 And it's just gutting that VAR ruled it out.
06:50 I mean, how would you judge that?
06:51 Do you think it was harsh?
06:51 I mean, there was talk that it was so marginal
06:53 that it might not have even been offside.
06:55 So what did you make of it?
06:56 - It was a marginal call.
06:58 And Brighton have had a few of those go against them,
07:01 especially in the last six months or so.
07:03 They've had a couple of apologies from Howard Webb,
07:06 who's the PGOML,
07:09 or from calls that have gone against them
07:14 in recent times.
07:17 And I think that was another one.
07:18 It was really harsh to be called out.
07:20 And as you say, it was a great finish from Louis Dunck.
07:23 I don't think he's ever hit many better than that
07:26 in his career.
07:27 And probably any centre-forward
07:29 would have been proud of that goal.
07:31 And it was crucial.
07:33 Probably you look at the decisions last season,
07:35 and it could have cost them a Champions League spot.
07:37 And I think again at Everton,
07:40 this last Saturday, they were hard done by again.
07:45 And I think it's a call that could have gone their way,
07:48 and they could have had three points instead of the one.
07:50 But yeah, tough on Louis Dunck and on Brighton.
07:53 - And what do you make of EER in general?
07:55 It's been in the headlines again this weekend.
07:57 Obviously we saw it at the Newcastle game.
08:00 And again, it was Spurs and Chelsea.
08:02 It took centre stage.
08:03 So what is your opinion on it?
08:04 Do you think it adds to the game
08:05 or is it taking something away?
08:06 - I think it's gone too far down the track now
08:09 to go back to as it previously was.
08:12 And there's too much investment that's gone into it
08:14 when you look at everything that's at Stockley Park,
08:16 you look at all the fourth officials
08:18 and all the VAR officials.
08:20 So I think it's a case of just trying to make it
08:23 as good as it can be
08:24 and continue to improve these decisions.
08:28 At the end of the day,
08:29 it's gonna come down to a human making a decision
08:31 and you have to accept that at some point down the track.
08:34 And so it's never gonna be perfect,
08:38 but I think it can be better.
08:40 And I think that's the way that it's got to get to.
08:42 And Howard Webb is working towards
08:45 getting it as good as it can be
08:47 in the most lucrative league in the world.
08:50 So room for improvement,
08:51 but yeah, it's definitely here to stay, I think.
08:55 - Yeah, and with Ajax coming up next,
08:58 obviously with the performances that we've seen recently,
09:00 it was very, very comfortable for Albion
09:02 against Ajax at the Amex.
09:03 Do you see it being a similar game in Amsterdam
09:06 or how do you see that one going?
09:07 - They've improved a bit since Brighton beat them
09:11 at the Amex.
09:12 I think Ajax have had two good results on the bounce
09:15 and I think their confidence will be lifted.
09:18 And I think Brighton will go into this game,
09:21 a win would really put them in a strong position in Group B.
09:25 So far, they've lost one, drawn one,
09:27 and then won one against Ajax.
09:29 And another victory against them
09:31 would, I think, really set them up nicely,
09:33 but it won't be easy.
09:34 Ajax have got some really, really strong,
09:36 technically gifted players
09:38 and I think they're gonna be a better outfit at home
09:41 than they were at the Amex.
09:42 So, Brighton are gonna have to be at their best
09:44 and they've got a few injury problems to deal with as well.
09:47 So, yeah, really tough game,
09:50 really tough game ahead of them awaits, I think.
09:52 - Yeah, what players for Ajax do you look at
09:55 as being potential problems for Brighton?
09:57 Obviously, you've got Bergwijn who's been in form
09:58 and Chief Akpong's got a couple of goals.
10:00 So, is there anywhere those two players
10:02 and what can they do to harm Brighton?
10:04 - I think they're the two danger men.
10:06 Akpong, he was actually on loan at Brighton
10:09 a while back early on in his career
10:11 and he had this sort of spell in his career
10:13 where he wasn't really, he couldn't get settled
10:15 and then he found his form at Middlesbrough
10:18 and then he got his move to Ajax last summer.
10:21 He's had a slow start,
10:22 but he's now sort of clicking into gear a bit
10:25 and I think he'll be one that Brighton
10:27 will have to watch as well.
10:28 He's a good attacking player,
10:30 a very good finisher on his day as well
10:33 and Brighton will have to be very wary of him.
10:36 And as you mentioned, Bergwijn as well,
10:37 he's Dutch international,
10:39 got Premier League experience with Tottenham.
10:42 So, yeah, they have the players that can hurt Brighton.
10:45 With Brighton, for me,
11:04 it's all about how they are defensively.
11:06 They've got the attacking players in
11:09 Jal Pedro, who's just been called up
11:11 to the Brazilian squad this week.
11:14 And then they've got Ansu Fati as well,
11:16 Evan Ferguson, Matoma.
11:18 So they have the attacking players.
11:19 If they can just get their defensive play right
11:22 with Louis Dunck and probably Van Hecker at the back,
11:25 I should think, or Igor Julio.
11:28 If they can get that right,
11:29 then I think they'll get a good result from Ajax, yeah.
11:32 - Excellent.
11:32 And Tyrek Lamptey, how do you see that one going?
11:35 Obviously, he was meant to be in the squad
11:36 for the game at Everton,
11:37 and he wasn't there due to a knock.
11:39 So it could be that the Serbies just aren't trying
11:41 to protect him and not worse than any injury that he's got.
11:43 But is it a concern that a player,
11:45 obviously, he's very young
11:46 and he keeps picking up these injuries
11:48 and can't seem to have a run in games
11:49 when he is such an important player for Brighton?
11:51 - He's a great player on his day,
11:53 but it's just keeping him fit.
11:55 As you say, he hasn't really had that run of games.
11:58 He had this terrible hamstring injury a while back
12:01 in, I think it was his first season
12:03 or second season at Brighton.
12:05 And he was out for almost a year after that.
12:08 And they've really taken a cautious approach
12:10 with him after that.
12:11 And he played in Marseille and he played at left back
12:15 because Soli March and Pervez Estupinjan were injured.
12:18 And he was probably the best player on the pitch
12:21 for Brighton that day.
12:22 Really energetic, defended well,
12:24 and then attacked well down left
12:26 and actually won the penalty,
12:27 which got them back to 2-2 after Jal Petro converted.
12:32 And yeah, I think Tarek Glamti will be,
12:35 he was in the squad to face Everton
12:37 and then he was a late withdrawal
12:38 and Jack Incherwood came in after he was ruled out.
12:43 De Zerby's always very coy.
12:44 He would never say what the actual injury is.
12:46 He would just sort of refer to it as a muscular injury,
12:49 as minor, but then you never really know.
12:52 So you hope that he's going to be able to be fit
12:54 and play some part against Ajax,
12:57 because he adds a lot,
12:59 especially with the injuries they've got
13:00 on the left-hand side.
13:01 Hopefully, hopefully he'll be fit,
13:04 but we'll know more.
13:05 De Zerby's going to give a press conference
13:07 in Amsterdam on Wednesday.
13:09 So we'll know more about Glamti's situation then.
13:12 That's good to know.
13:13 And looking ahead, after Ajax,
13:14 Brighton will face Sheffield United in the league.
13:18 They've just come away from their first win
13:19 of the season against Wolves.
13:21 How do you see that one going?
13:22 Is it going to be a tough game for Brighton?
13:24 Yeah, I think the win against Wolves
13:27 would really boost Sheffield United's hopes.
13:29 They just needed something.
13:30 They've been struggling since their promotion
13:32 to the Premier League.
13:34 And I think that win will really give them some confidence.
13:37 And coupled with the fact that Brighton
13:39 sometimes struggle against the teams
13:41 that are lower down in the division,
13:43 to teams that sit back and make it difficult for them.
13:46 They often, you know,
13:48 they struggle to break them down a little bit.
13:50 So I think coming off the back of Amsterdam on Thursday,
13:54 straight into a tough game against Sheffield United,
13:56 who would be really fired up.
13:58 I think if Brighton can get a good result
14:02 from both of these games, they'll be doing really well.
14:04 But Sheffield United will be tricky, I think.
14:07 Is it a game that you think is a must win
14:09 in the race for top six again,
14:11 or even better for Brighton?
14:12 It's still very early in the league,
14:15 but I think it's one that the fans
14:17 will really want to see Brighton play well in.
14:21 They've seen them struggle against teams
14:23 such as Fulham and against Everton,
14:24 who are in the lower reaches of the table.
14:27 And I think the fans really want to see Brighton
14:29 show that they can perform well in Europe
14:32 and then follow that up quickly
14:33 with a good result again on the Sunday.
14:36 So I think it's important in that respect.
14:38 I think for the battle for the top six,
14:40 I think Brighton are really in the running for that.
14:43 And there's going to be quite a few ups and downs
14:46 and people are going to drop points
14:47 and gain points unexpectedly as well.
14:51 So for the top six, I think that's going to be
14:55 a long-term aim.
14:58 And I think they're good enough to get there.
14:59 But yeah, I think it's going to be very,
15:03 very tough against Sheffield United.
15:06 Well, we're joined today by Sam Morton and Jacob Pannens.
15:09 They're with Amsterdam following the fortunes
15:11 of Brighton and Hooghveld,
15:13 who have got a Europa League match against Ajax,
15:17 Dutch giants Ajax, tomorrow night at the Johan Cruyff Arena.
15:21 So you made the journey over yesterday,
15:24 Sam and Jacob.
15:26 How was the journey across?
15:27 And did you see many Brighton fans on the way?
15:32 We bumped into a big group of Brighton fans already.
15:35 One was dressed in a seagull's outfit and he was loving life.
15:39 I think there were a few who had a bit too much to drink already.
15:41 So you could tell how excited they were, though,
15:44 and how massive the occasion is for Brighton.
15:46 And it's really great to see.
15:48 And I think it'll be nice to see more Brighton fans
15:51 over the next few hours.
15:52 I'm sure more will arrive this evening and tomorrow.
15:55 Yeah, it's the best time, isn't it,
15:57 to be a Brighton fan at the moment.
15:59 And just a few years back,
16:01 to think that they'll be playing in games like these
16:04 in Amsterdam and against teams like Ajax.
16:06 It's no wonder the fans, like you say,
16:09 loving life over there.
16:11 Yeah, it's pretty surreal.
16:12 One of the guys who was dressed up like a seagull,
16:15 he's been a season's seagull holder since 2011.
16:17 And I mean, I'm sure it must be pretty surreal
16:19 from that first game of the Amex against Doncaster,
16:21 now playing at the Johan Cruyff Arena in Amsterdam,
16:25 against one of the biggest clubs in world football.
16:27 It's just, yeah, it's unbelievable, really,
16:29 when you look at Brighton,
16:30 especially even prior to 2011 as well.
16:33 Yeah, as you say, a really good occasion for the fans.
16:35 But the team themselves,
16:36 they've got a serious job to do, haven't they?
16:39 A win would really set them up in the group.
16:43 What do you make of Ajax at the moment, Jacob?
16:45 And what do you think of Brighton's chances
16:47 of getting a result?
16:49 Yeah, I mean, Ajax haven't been having the best season
16:51 you know, they've been bottom of the table,
16:54 they've gone through a couple of managers
16:55 and things just aren't working well for them
16:58 at any stretch of the imagination.
17:00 So they're gonna be desperate
17:01 to gain some sort of winning mentality from the game.
17:04 But at the same time, Brighton have got to look at that game
17:06 and see that's one to win.
17:07 Obviously, they probably didn't pick up as many points
17:09 in the first three games as they would have liked.
17:11 So this is gonna be seen as a must-win game
17:13 'cause you need to be picking up points away from home
17:15 if you want to progress through the group.
17:16 And Athens is gonna be really tricky,
17:18 you know, Marseille proved to be a test.
17:19 So yeah, I think Brighton can see it as a winnable fixture,
17:22 but I think Ajax are gonna be looking
17:24 to get that winning spirit back as well.
17:26 Yeah, yeah.
17:27 You went to the home game, didn't you, Sam,
17:28 when Brighton beat Ajax 2-0.
17:32 Do you think they're gonna be a much better outfit
17:35 on their home soil?
17:36 They were a bit disappointing, weren't they,
17:37 at the Amex, Ajax?
17:38 Yeah, it was a really disappointing performance
17:41 from Ajax at the Amex.
17:42 And it was kind of expected, really.
17:44 I think they were on a terrible run of form
17:45 and I think they were bottom of the league
17:47 going into the game.
17:47 And it was just real lack of confidence
17:50 and you could really see that in the team at the time.
17:53 Brighton took full advantage, really,
17:54 and I look by far the better team on the day.
17:57 And I'm expecting a far different kind of game.
18:00 I think Ajax are obviously the home team,
18:02 they've got to kind of assert their authority,
18:04 gonna have the majority of the crowd
18:07 and the support behind them.
18:08 And it'd be interesting to see how Brighton cope with that.
18:10 Obviously, they've had the experience at Marseille,
18:12 obviously a bit of a hostile atmosphere.
18:15 But it'll be another big challenge, really,
18:17 in such a huge stadium with such a passionate set of fans.
18:22 And it'll be interesting to see how they cope again with that.
18:25 Obviously, they did really well to come back
18:26 from the season down at Marseille.
18:27 So, yeah, definitely prove they can handle it.
18:30 But I'm definitely expecting a better performance from Ajax.
18:32 They've obviously come into the game
18:33 on a couple of wins now as well.
18:35 They've scored a few goals.
18:37 Bergwijn's in good scoring form
18:39 and Chief of Act form has got a couple as well.
18:41 So, yeah, I think Ajax are definitely going to be better
18:44 than they were at the Amex.
18:45 And expecting a tougher game for sure.
18:48 Yeah. And a big night as well for Joel Veltman, isn't it?
18:51 A former Ajax player, now plays for Brighton.
18:55 And also, Jan-Paul van Gecke as well, isn't he?
18:57 A very talented young Dutch defender.
18:59 A big occasion for those two, Jacob.
19:02 Yeah, massive.
19:03 Obviously, Veltman returning.
19:04 He spent 19 years at Ajax.
19:06 So, I'm sure he'll be happy to return.
19:08 But I hope he's...
19:09 I bet he's hoping to bring three points back to Brighton
19:12 rather than leaving it with his fellow countrymen.
19:14 And van Gecke, obviously...
19:16 I think this is going to be a huge game for van Gecke.
19:18 Obviously, the only defender to have started
19:20 all three games of the Europa League
19:21 under De Servi so far.
19:23 And he's a man who's going to be looking at the Dutch national team
19:26 and thinking that there's maybe a slot in there for him.
19:28 Never got called up before.
19:30 Well, never featured for the national team before.
19:32 So, I think he's going to be seeing this as a massive chance
19:34 to make himself a household name in his own country.
19:38 Yeah. Yeah.
19:39 And just looking at another player,
19:41 he has been called up to the Brazil national team this week,
19:44 Jao Pedro.
19:46 He's the joint leading scorer in the Europa League
19:50 with four goals so far.
19:52 How key is he going to be, Sam?
19:54 Very key.
19:55 He's really found his scoring form in the Europa League so far.
19:59 And hopefully it continues tomorrow.
20:01 He just looks so good, even in the league.
20:03 He just links up really well with the attackers around him.
20:07 He's forming some good partnerships there,
20:09 especially with Matoma.
20:11 So, that's really great to see.
20:12 And he's adjusted really well to the Serb's ideas
20:16 and the way that he likes to play.
20:17 And I think he's only going to get better.
20:18 He's still so young.
20:20 He's got that, obviously, Brazilian flair to him as well.
20:23 So, it's a really exciting start that he's made
20:25 and it'll be really important tomorrow, I think.
20:27 Brighton need to make a fast start,
20:29 get an early goal to make the Ajax fans uncomfortable
20:33 and don't let Ajax get control of the game, really.
20:36 So, I think, yeah,
20:36 Jao Pedro is going to play a really important part.
20:39 And I think it's really, really great to see
20:41 the impact that he's made already.
20:43 Stan, do you think a win is on the cards?
20:46 How do you see it going?
20:48 Yeah, I see a win is definitely possible.
20:50 I think a draw will be a good result.
20:52 I think after beating them at home,
20:54 I think to back that up with a point,
20:56 I think it will be a decent return.
20:58 Four points from two games against Ajax.
21:00 It will leave them in a strong position.
21:02 But as Jacob said, it would leave them in a position
21:04 where they'd probably have to go and beat Athens
21:07 and maybe Marseille as well.
21:09 So, a win would be amazing
21:11 and it would really put them into an amazing position
21:13 going into the knockout rounds.
21:15 And I think they would be in the strongest position
21:17 out of the other teams in the group
21:19 if they were to get a win tomorrow.
21:21 So, it'll be interesting.
21:22 We're off to the press conference soon
21:23 to have a chat with De Servi and Van Hecke.
21:25 So, it'll be interesting to see how they see it.
21:28 Obviously, they'll be looking for a win.
21:31 Well, thanks again to you both for joining us.
