00:30Hello and welcome to Latest TV News. I'm Sam Morton, reporter for Sussex World and in this week's show we will be discussing Brighton & Hove Albion's 2023-24 season and possible outgoings this summer.
00:44First, here are the top stories from across Sussex.
00:47Worthing traders have compiled a list of demands amid ongoing disruption in the town centre.
00:53Months of roadworks have sparked anger among residents, compounded by the closure of the Grafton Seaside car park, which remains shut until further notice due to safety concerns.
01:04The High Street multi-storey car park will also close between June 23rd and July 6th as part of Hemico's heat network project.
01:12Worthing Borough Council said it understands that a disruption in the town centre could be putting people off from visiting and has forged a plan to alleviate a car parking conundrum by opening up parts of the Tevil Gate site.
01:21The Angering Park estate has offered assurances about the use of wire animal snares after a badger in a traumatised state was discovered by a visitor.
01:31The visitor from Devon took a walk with his wife in the Angering Park estate, which is owned by the Duke of Norfolk.
01:36He said he came across a badger trapped inside a wire snare.
01:39The animal was still alive, but in a traumatised state.
01:42The essay has responded to concerns raised about the incident, stating,
01:46We do not use old-fashioned snares and we would never set a humane cable restraint with the intention of killing a badger or anywhere near to a badger set.
01:54A plan has been unveiled to reduce the number of empty shops in Littlehampton.
01:59Arran District Council has announced the launch of the Littlehampton Retail Startup Grant Scheme,
02:05a new initiative aimed at revitalising the town centre by supporting independent retailers to open in vacant units.
02:12The scheme offers grants of up to £3,000 to help new retail businesses establish themselves in Littlehampton High Street, Beach Road and Surrey Street.
02:22The goal is to reduce the number of empty shops, encourage diverse and sustainable retail offerings
02:27and support local entrepreneurs in bringing fresh energy to the town.
02:31The council said grants will be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis, subject to budget availability
02:37and will exclude franchises, national chains and certain business types such as vape shops, salons and eateries.
02:45The Meeting Place Café in Hove has reopened after an extensive refurbishment.
02:51The café on King's Esplanade dates all the way back to 1930 and has recently reopened with a host of new amenities,
02:57including, for the first time ever, indoor seating.
03:00This is thanks to an all-new modern structure complete with contemporary facilities which replaces the old kiosk.
03:06The café's owners were granted unanimous planning permission in June 2023
03:10and the café serves food and drink between 7am and 5pm with customer toilets, wheelchair access, baby changing rooms and Wi-Fi on site.
03:19Finally, East Sussex County Council says a record number of roads will be given a new lease of life
03:25in its programme of pothole preventing work.
03:28More than 40 miles of roads have been included in East Sussex Highway's surface dressing programme
03:33which begins this month and is more than double than in previous years.
03:37It follows a significant investment in the county's road patching last year
03:40to ensure those most need of repair were ready for surface dressing.
03:44The process, which sees roads coated with a thin layer of bitumen and stowed chippings,
03:49protects the carriageway from water and frost which can lead to potholes forming.
03:53Stay tuned for the Goldmouth Action Podcast.
04:09Welcome to another episode of the Goldmouth Action Podcast
04:11where we take a look at all the latest goings on at Brighton, Hove, Albion and Crawley Town.
04:15I'm Matt Pohl and this week I'm joined by Brighton writer Jaron Howard,
04:18Sam Morton who covers both Albion and Crawley Town and Red Devils expert Mark Dunford.
04:23The English football season may be over but there's still plenty of matters to discuss regarding Brighton and Crawley Town.
04:28This week we'll discuss whether Albion boss Fabian Hurtzela has got the credit he deserves
04:31after his first season in the Premier League,
04:33what the Seagulls need to do in the summer transfer window
04:35and we'll bring you news of two new phases at Crawley Town.
04:38You can read all the stories we are talking about with videos and pictures online
04:41at sussexworld.co.uk forward slash sport
04:43and you can check out other great videos on shotstv.com and Freeview Channel 262.
04:47You may also be watching on latest TV so thank you very much for tuning in.
04:52Fabian Hurtzela guided Brighton to the club's second highest Premier League finish
04:55in his first season in charge.
04:56A points tally of 61's only one shy of the campaign that delivered Europa League football
05:00wonder Roberto Di Zervi with a little help from Graham Potter.
05:03But Europe just eluded the eighth place Seagulls on the final day of the season.
05:06On the face of things, Darren, you wouldn't say that's quite a good season
05:10but obviously Europe's a big, big miss.
05:12How would you rate and sum up Brighton's 24-25 campaign?
05:17Yeah, as you say, it's disappointing to miss out.
05:20They achieved the eighth place finish which looked out of the question,
05:24you know, before the final few matches and they had a strong finish to the campaign
05:30which bodes well for next season.
05:31But missing out on Europe is a blow.
05:33Obviously, Crystal Palace scuppered their plans with their FA Cup victory
05:38against Manchester City.
05:40There was tentative talk that Palace could be in trouble
05:42because of the multi-club ownership with the Europa League
05:45but they are apparently in talks with UEFA and are expected to compete next season.
05:52If there had been a problem, then Brighton would have said Palace will be fine.
05:59But in terms of Brighton's season, I agree with you.
06:02I think it's pretty good.
06:03They're second highest finished in their history, as you say.
06:06And that's no mean feat.
06:08And when you look at when Di Zervi achieved that sixth place finish,
06:12they had a midfield of McAllister, Moises Caicedo and Pascal Gross.
06:16So that's as good as you're going to get in the Premier League.
06:20And I think this season, that's been a real issue for Brighton.
06:24They've mainly played with, you know, Carlos Belieber, Jack Hinslewood
06:29and Yassin Ayari in that role.
06:31And all great players in their own right, but they're still very young.
06:35Belieber, it's his first full season in the Premier League, really.
06:38Yassin Ayari, he was on loan at Blackburn and Coventry last term
06:42in the Championship, and he's done extremely well to step up
06:47and become a regular in the team.
06:49And Jack Hinslewood as well, obviously, still very young,
06:52learning his trade, and he's had a very good season.
06:56I think there's going to be more to come from those.
06:59But I think with the 200 million that they spent,
07:03probably only Jorginho Rutter and Yankouba Minte provided value for money.
07:08The rest, Ferdi Cadioglio, Matt Swiffer, O'Reilly, Brejan Gruda,
07:13they all suffered injuries and loss of form,
07:15and they haven't really got going as yet.
07:17So I think there's more to come from those players next season.
07:22So with all the change of manager, the change of players,
07:25I think an eighth-place finish is very good.
07:29Lewis Dunk, obviously, he was missing for large chunks of the game as well,
07:33so, of the seasons.
07:38Not too bad, but special mention to Danny Welbeck
07:42and Jean-Paul Van Hecker as well.
07:44I think those two have been excellent for Brighton this season,
07:48and they've played a massive part in finishing in eighth place,
07:51I think, this year, which is pretty good.
07:54Yeah, it is indeed.
07:55Do you think Hutzela's first season at Brighton,
07:57same as a story that's perhaps been under the radar?
08:00The youngest permanent head coach in Premier League history
08:02took his side to the brink of European qualification,
08:04as we've already spoken about, and as Darren has said,
08:07that's something that's only happened once in the club's history.
08:08But I've not seen him receive anything, by the way,
08:11of recognition, even in passing,
08:12other than from ex-Albion players or Albion supporters.
08:16Yeah, I think it has gone under the radar, actually.
08:19He's obviously achieved something, obviously, really impressive.
08:23Obviously, the second highest finish for Brighton.
08:25I know, obviously, that's not good enough.
08:27They want it to be the best.
08:29That's what I said to Bart McBruggan after the final match of the season.
08:33Just are they pleased and proud of how they've finished the season
08:36with the points tally?
08:37And he said, it's not good enough unless it's the best,
08:40which is the great mentality to have.
08:42And I think that definitely is replicated by Fabian himself.
08:46But yeah, I do agree.
08:47I think it has gone under the radar, I think.
08:49Obviously, when you consider everything that Brighton have had to deal with
08:51in terms of injuries and things like that and having to, yeah,
08:55obviously, lots of key players and key parts of the season.
08:59They have done really well in the circumstances
09:01and are coming up against some really top-quality sides
09:04in the Premier League.
09:05And there's so much competition for places now.
09:07And I think to finish eighth is really impressive.
09:09And if it wasn't for Crystal Palace beating Man City in that FA Cup final,
09:13then they would have had European football.
09:17So it very, very easily could have been
09:19an even more impressive season.
09:22And it was just a shame that it didn't go for Brighton
09:26from that point of view.
09:27But I think Hurts has done a great job.
09:29And I think he's only going to get better as well
09:32with some more signings.
09:33And hopefully, he can keep players fit next season as well.
09:36That's a big gift, obviously, because we know Brighton have really struggled
09:39to keep players fit over the last few years.
09:41So if he can do that next season and get some more players in,
09:45the sky's the limit for him and Brighton.
09:47And, yeah, I'm really impressed by what I saw from him this season.
09:50I know there were a few bad results here and there
09:53as he's learning his trade and getting to know the Premier League.
09:57But I'm sure he's definitely learned from that
09:59and will make sure that he's ironed out any issues next season.
10:14well the transfer window opened on sunday albeit for 10 days initially mainly so sides competing
10:39in the club world cup and get early business done but it will reopen for the rest of summer
10:42on the 16th of june uh darren this might be quite a broad question but is there any area of brighton
10:47squad that needs improving or is it maybe just a case of holding on to key players being the
10:51biggest priority how do you see things at this stage yeah it's going to be a mixture of all of
10:56that matt i think and i think it's going to be a busy summer for brighton i expect a number of the
11:00fringe players to move on they've got a huge huge squad at the moment uh when you look at all the
11:05lone players that they have and coming coming back and they have big calls to make on the likes of
11:09evan ferguson who struggled at west ham on loan julio and c so had a decent spell at ipswich
11:15and then facundo bonote as well they all returned from their loan it'd be interesting to see what
11:19happens uh to those to those three um and also then in terms of the likes of carlos boliba carol matoma
11:27jau pedro barth the bruggan um that'll be in demand this summer and and don't be surprised if bids arrive
11:34for van hecke as well uh there was tentative talk of newcastle being interested in in van hecke
11:40uh previously uh he's had an outstanding season i think he's a very underrated center back in the
11:46in the premier league um and out of those the one i think will probably most likely go is is jau pedro
11:53i think um he's been in and out of favor at brighton this season he's annoyed his teammates he's annoyed the
11:58manager he's annoyed the fans this season but he's a brilliant player as well so when he's when he's
12:04fit and firing and in the mood he's he's some player and there will be a number of premier league clubs
12:09who would be keen to take him and i think brighton paid 30 million to walk
12:14join if a bid came in right and uh would seriously consider consider that um there's also been a
12:27number of reports linking purposes to manchester united as well so that could be one to uh to keep
12:33an eye eye on uh in terms of incoming brighton have already signed tommy watson from sunderland for 10
12:39million and also greek prospect stefan uh tizimas for around about 22 million and they'll hope to
12:45impress in pre-season and be in and around the first team squad um so yeah there's potential there
12:51but i think in terms of where they really need to improve is it's in the left back and the right back
12:55slots um especially if tarik lampty as expected he's going to leave this summer he's out of contract
13:02um brighton have been linked with um southampton's uh carl walker peters i think that could be a good
13:07move he'll be on a free transfer uh he can also operate on the left and and the right flanks as
13:12well so that could be could be one to keep an eye on although west ham and fulham are also said uh to
13:18be keen as as well so um so yeah plenty plenty still to do but in terms of the goalkeepers as well james
13:25beadle who has been on loan at sheffield wednesday um for the last couple of seasons he's expected to
13:31complete a loan deal to birmingham uh later uh later this week as well so that's one that's
13:37going to go through it's an interesting situation with the goalkeepers especially if barf the bruggan
13:41stays next season you've got jason steel as a backup tom mcgill he signed a new contract last month
13:47and then where does that leave carl rushworth as well he's been linked with a move away
13:51um so so yeah the goalkeepers james beadle should be on the move carl rushworth will likely move on as
13:57as well this summer so it's going to be busy it's going to be busy i think yeah it sounds
14:02like to be very hectic and of the players derren's mentioned there to potentially leave sam do you
14:07think there's any one of those players who needs to go that maybe that you don't think will feature
14:11next season or just to get some playing time um i think yeah the main one that derren's mentioned
14:16jal pedro i think he i think he probably needs to go now after a recent event um i feel like that's um
14:23that's an enormous certainty i think that he will he will move on um obviously the time has mentioned
14:29he's one that brighton would actually love to keep hold of um us as germans would love to see the time
14:33and brighton for another season and definitely the fans as well um so yes it'd be interesting to see
14:38what happens with with matoma but you wouldn't begrudge him a move if a championship club for example
14:45like by munich as as has been reported if they were to come in for him then i don't think many could
14:50could blame him if he did move on because he's given great service to brighton and do brilliant
14:54things so i think he would be um sent off with um all the the best of that world which is in the
15:00world a bit like alexis mccallister was i would imagine uh but yeah time will tell uh lamty as
15:05mentioned i think yeah he's definitely going to be off it's just such a shame with him because
15:09he's just been constantly picking up injuries and he's this real player there and there's this real
15:14electric um talent that he has and especially in the early days of the the pace he had and
15:21the problems that he caused teams and injuries really have lighted his his career so far which
15:26is um which is a real shame and hopefully if he does move on that he can stop getting those injuries
15:31and becomes the player that we know that he he definitely can be um one that darren um i don't
15:36think mentioned was um simon adingra potentially uh not too many rooms back at the moment but i would be
15:41interested to see what happens to things is is game time limited this season um a lot would
15:47depend on what happens with matoma of course if matoma does move on um and dingo might then see
15:52that as a chance to get back into the first team um but if matoma does stay i could see a dingo perhaps
16:00trying to to get a move elsewhere to get some more minutes so yeah i think as darren said it's going
16:05to be a busy summer and lots of things can change and there's lots of uh moving parts and things like
16:10that so if you're interested to see how it how it develops darren um sam has mentioned matoma there
16:17um he's been uh linked with um buying as sam mentioned and arsenal as well according to
16:23sky germany he's obviously linked with a big money move to saudi arabia in january which didn't go
16:27through but do you think the allure of maybe a buyer and arsenal might be too much for matoma during
16:32the summer it my hunch is is that he probably will move on this this summer i think um brighton
16:40rejected the bid from him in in january from the uh from the saudis uh from the saudi team believed
16:45to be around 60 60 million um he's 27 years old now he wants to play champions league football he's
16:52coming into his peak years and i i just think that a move now would be good for him and and probably
17:00brighton's last chance to get a really big fee for him as well which they only paid 3 million for him
17:05when they bought him uh from kawasaki front out um he came in um as a complete unknown um leandro trossard
17:14was on that left flank he moved to arsenal which then opened the door for matoma to uh to come
17:19straight into the team and it was seamless it was it was almost a you know an upgrade on on trossard as
17:25well he's been one of my favorite players to watch over the last few years i hope they keep him but as you
17:31say there have been links to by munich especially liverpool and arsenal he's apparently a barcelona
17:36fan he's um he had pictures of lionel methi on his on his wall apparently when it's uh back home when he
17:43wanted to uh to become a footballer and is making all these plans and his career plan is to play in
17:48the champions league and he's certainly good enough to he could grace that stage without any problem at
17:54all i think he's a fantastic player and if he does move on it would be a sad occasion my only concern
18:01is that brighton don't really have a that when trossard left matoma came in with equal talent if
18:07not better i don't think brighton have that on the left flank at the moment they've got ibrahim osman on
18:12loan at final who plays off the left and it's not quite he hasn't really indicated that he can do what
18:18matoma can do um tommy watson came in from sunderland he's still very young so there's
18:24potential there and as sam mentioned simon adingra as as well but whether he's at matoma's level as
18:30as well is is debatable as well he almost moved to sunderland last last january as well so i think
18:36if matoma does leave brighton would need to dip into the transfer market to strengthen that left-hand
18:41side as as well but um but yeah one to keep an eye on ben crawley town officially announced their first
18:47signing of the summer last week the reds announced signing of midfielder reese brown on a one-year contract
18:52the 29 year old joins the club having most recently played for forest green rovers and
18:57good to see the reds getting their business done early mark tell us a little bit about reese brown
19:02yeah he's um experienced player he's 29 year old and um he's a product of the birmingham city academy
19:08and uh he spent four years there but while he was there he had um loan spells of notts county and
19:13chesterfield um he linked up with forest green for the first time in 2017 and that's when he would have
19:18first met um our scott lindsay um and then he earned himself a place in the pfa league two team of the
19:25season that year and then um he went to huddersfield uh and following their relegation from the premier
19:32league uh he joined them after they got relegated from the premier league sorry and then he had a
19:36loan spells at peterborough and uh yeah and then went back to huddersfield and then went back to forest
19:42green rovers so really experienced um is a midfielder um and obviously scott knows knows him
19:50knows what he can do um i know sam's going to come on to what he said about him but uh he's very happy
19:56to join the club and he said i'm really happy to be working with scott again and i hope we can achieve
20:00great things together and it's um we're going to talk about the transfer policy this summer in a bit but
20:06it seems like a bit of a shift change there and yeah it's good to see crawley bring it in
20:11some good experienced players and uh bringing them in early in the summer as well rather than
20:15leaving it late until august when they've played three games already so um yeah no it looks like
20:21it looks like a good signing it does indeed um sam how do you see brown fitting into lindsay's squad
20:26do you see him as a potential starter and what did uh the reds was have to say about the midfielder
20:30upon his arrival at the broadfield staging yeah i think he will be a starter i think he'll go straight
20:35into into the team obviously he's represented england at youth level um and clearly impressed the
20:40management team at the board will stadium during his trial period towards the end of last season
20:44um and yes scott lindsay said reese is someone who i've worked with previously during my time at
20:49forest green rovers he's an outstanding talent who's very comfortable with the ball at his feet
20:54can drive forward and also pass really well he completely fits into what we are trying to do here
20:58at crawley he feels his potential didn't quite reach the heights it should have and so hopefully
21:02crawley can be a platform for him to shine once again he impressed all of us when he travels at the
21:07back end of last season so we decided to have him on board um and brown himself said he's very happy
21:12to join crawley and excited to see what they can accomplish in the upcoming season and he's really
21:17happy to work with scott again and hoping they can achieve great things together so yeah i think it's
21:21an exciting signing and i think it'll definitely go straight into that midfield um thank you all for
