00:20 Welcome to Hi-Rod Garage presented by Lincoln Tech. If you've been watching, we've taken this 1970 Chevelle and turned it into a modern performing classic looking muscle car.
00:28 There's a few things left on that list before it's complete though, and today we're going to knock them out.
00:32 We're doing suspension and brake upgrades, and then we rated the OBGI catalog for some cool interior upgrades and vintage air as well.
00:38 But before we even get started, stay tuned for this quick tip from Lincoln Tech.

00:47 Here's a few tips for measuring main bearing oil clearance. This is the gap between the outside diameter of the crankshaft journals and the inside diameter of the main bearings.
00:55 Step one, use an outside micrometer to measure the diameter of each journal. This becomes your standard.
01:01 Next, install the bearings and torque the main caps to spec. Then, insert the dial bore gauge into the mic.
01:08 Now, wiggle it slowly until you note the highest reading on the gauge, then zero it out.
01:14 The bore gauge is now set to the exact diameter of the journal.
01:18 When you insert the dial bore gauge into the bearing and move the end up and down, the number on the dial indicates the distance between the bore in the bearing and the crankshaft journal.
01:28 Take a measurement in two spots, 45 and 90 degrees to the parting line of the bearing shell.
01:34 This will tell you if you have a bore that isn't round.
01:37 You want at least three thousandths of an inch clearance for main bearings, and remember that having more clearance is better than having too little.
01:45 Not enough clearance will result in extreme engine damage.

01:55 Alright, so this is the dash we're putting on our 1970 Chevelle. This is a brand new 1970 Supersport dash.
02:02 That means OBG went out and they reproduced every single part to make this possible.
02:07 They've got all the bracketry, the switches, the wiring harnesses, gauges, panels, down to hardware and a brand new cigarette lighter.
02:14 They sell all these parts separately, so if you need one or two things you can buy them, or if you wanted to you could clean the whole catalog out and build up a brand new one just like this.
02:22 OBG's buddies of ours, they assembled everything already and it's ready to go in the car.
02:26 Before we can yank the old dash out, you have to at least lower the steering column.
02:31 We're going to replace ours with a new one, so we're going to pull it out entirely. That's what Lucky's working on now.
02:35 Since we've got all the bolts and the wiring off of the column, the only thing that's holding it on now is the actual connection to the steering gearbox.
02:45 We've got all the bolts out of those couplers, so we're just going to try to bust them free. This thing should come right out.
02:50 Let me know when I'm going to punch myself in the face.
02:52 There it is.
02:59 Now we've got the column out, we just have to take out a bunch of bolts and we'll yank this dash right out.

03:15 We've got the dash out. One tip about getting that dash out is you don't want to chase the wiring harness all and try to take all the different connectors out.
03:22 You can actually follow it all the way back to the fuse box, take out two bolts and that entire thing will disconnect at the firewall.
03:28 You pull the whole thing out as one piece.
03:30 What we have here is the original AC unit. This is comprised of an evaporator that was under the hood, this heater core and diverter, a bunch of fiberglass, and a ton of vacuum lines that they used to control it.
03:42 We're going to yank it all out, simplify it. It's going to be computerized, it's going to be smaller, it's going to be more efficient.
03:47 Ready? See how easy that was?
03:51 Since the vintage air system doesn't use fresh air anymore from the outside of the car, you're going to block off all the holes.
03:56 They give you a bunch of block off plates, so you just got to put some silicone on them, bolt them against the firewall, seal this whole area off, and then we can bolt in the main unit.

04:07 We just fed the two AC lines and the two heater core lines up into the stock vent hole.
04:13 We've got the firewall all sealed off, so that really cleans up this installation.
04:17 All four lines go up in and they come out into the inner fender, so this thing is super tricked.
04:21 We're going to bolt up the vintage AC main unit, which is the blower motor and the whole vent diverter system.
04:27 It's electronic, it's small, it's compact. It probably cuts like 50 pounds off the stock system, so this thing is pretty rad.

04:43 We've got the vintage AC unit bolted into the car. We ran new defrost vents and hoses for them.
04:49 All we've got to do now is bring in the new dash, bolt it in, and run hoses from the vintage air unit to the factory dash vents.

05:09 All right, that should be the last of them. Now we can hook up the rest of our air vents.
05:12 Stick the new column in, put the dash pad on top, and hook up all the wiring, and we should be done.

05:32 We've got the new dash in and wired up, the columns in and wired up too.
05:37 As long as we didn't screw anything up too badly, it should fire right up.

05:50 Okay, I'm about to button this thing up.

05:53 Put that on and...
05:55 Wait a minute. Okay, so clearly we have some more stuff to do...
05:58 That's not right.
05:59 Under the hood.
06:00 We're going to finish up the AC, and then we're going to put on the suspension and brakes, and this car should be bitchin'.

06:26 All right, that's it under the hood for the air conditioning.
06:29 Now onto the serious stuff, suspension and brakes.
06:31 Now that we've got the interior clean and comfortable, we're going to turn our attention to the two things that this car does not do well,
06:36 and those are turn and stop.
06:39 All the suspension on this car is clapped out.
06:41 It sways, it bounces, it's a disaster.
06:44 So we hit up OBGI for a solution, and this is what they sent us.
06:47 Now this is a pretty gnarly setup.
06:49 It is a TVS Total Vehicle System Stage 1 Extreme Kit from Hotchkiss,
06:54 and they sent us a set of RideTech shocks and Wilwood disc brakes.
06:58 This might look like a lot of parts, and it is, but everything's really straightforward.
07:01 You could probably put this stuff together on your own car in about a weekend.
07:04 Before we can put all those shiny new parts on, we've got to tear off all the old suspension and brakes.

07:10 Come here.
07:12 I'm going to lower this jack.
07:14 Spring's going to pop out.
07:15 Try to do this nice and carefully.
07:17 [Music]
07:45 So all these rubber bushings are shot.
07:47 These brakes are in terrible shape.
07:49 There are cracks all the way down the rotor on the face of the rotor.
07:54 I don't really know how that happens, but the brakes did not work well,
07:57 so pretty much it's all bad here.

08:02 Toss this lower control arm in.
08:05 We've got the lube on these polyurethane bushings so they don't squeak.
08:11 And they should slide right up in there.
08:14 There we go.
08:16 [Music]
08:24 This thing's going together really easy.
08:26 Lower arm went right on, connected it to the spindle, put the upper arm on.
08:30 I used a lift and a jack to compress the coil spring with the lower arm up into place
08:35 so that I could connect the upper arm to the spindle.
08:38 Now it's all together.
08:40 To button up the suspension, I'm going to put in these cool monotube aluminum RideTech shocks.
08:45 And then we are going to replace all the steering parts with just factory fresh stuff,
08:49 put on our Wilwood disc brakes, and we'll be done on the front.

09:13 That's not bad.
09:16 Because OBG is OBG, they gave us a brand new steering arm and brand new spindles.
09:21 So those are installed.
09:22 I just installed the caliper bracket for the Wilwood disc brakes to it.
09:25 Now I can go ahead and mount a new Wilwood hub, put the rotor on, caliper.
09:30 This is all done.
09:32 [Music]
09:38 A lot of the aftermarket brake kits require you to shim the caliper
09:43 so that it's perfectly sitting in the middle of the brake rotor.
09:46 So this one, the caliper needs to come forward because you see this is a bigger gap here than here.
09:52 All right, so now we are going to unbolt the caliper mount from the spindle,
09:56 put a stack of shims behind each bolt, and should put the caliper where we want it.

10:05 That looks pretty perfect.
10:07 In keeping with the theme of all new everything, OBG sent us all new steering parts.
10:11 New inner and outer tie rods, idler arm, and center drag link.
10:15 They also sent us this cool billet aluminum tie rod adjusting sleeves
10:19 that replace the old clamp style with lock nuts instead.
10:23 So these are pretty rad, should be easy to use, probably hard to strip.
10:27 Ready? Let's put it in.

10:44 That's it for the front suspension.
10:46 We have one more piece to put on and that is the Hotchkiss uprated sway bar which is going on now.

10:59 All right, so this is probably the worst part of the suspension.
11:03 See these?
11:05 Shouldn't do that.
11:07 Since the springs are still under pressure, we're going to put the weight of the car on the axle
11:12 and we're going to disconnect the upper arms and the shocks and let everything unload.
11:16 Springs will come out, the axle will stay on the table, and then we can work on it.
11:21 All right, so now we have to deal with these bushings.
11:24 So normally a bushing installer is like a cast piece, different size sleeves, and a long tempered bolt,
11:31 but we didn't have one, so we just made it work with some pipe we cut up, a couple of gussets, and a long bolt.
11:38 All that for a couple of new bushings pressed into the housing, but it's done and we can put it back up into the car.
11:44 We've got our Ride Tech shocks already mounted in and Hotchkiss upper arms.
11:49 We're going to lower the car onto the rear end, get the springs fitted, and the arms connected.

12:02 So we got everything else done, just finishing up this Hotchkiss rear sway bar that we're adding.
12:06 And then we are good to go.

12:13 After finishing the brakes and suspension upgrade, we drove this Chevelle all the way out here to California Speedway
12:18 because this thing rides and handles like a dream now.
12:21 Before, we took it out on the autocross track when it had stock suspension, stock brakes, and that opener end.
12:26 And now that we've upgraded all those parts, I'm going to hit the track again and I'm expecting much better results.

13:09 Well, that about wraps it up for our love affair with the OPG Chevelle.
13:13 As you can see, it's a ton better on the autocross track.
13:16 But overall, after all these upgrades, suspension, brakes, diff, engine, trans, this thing is a ton of fun to drive everywhere.
13:23 This car is the total package.
13:25 I'll be bummed to say goodbye to this thing, but hopefully I get to take it on one more joy ride.

14:10 How often do you all get into street races?
14:12 Never.
14:14 I don't drive fast ever.
14:16 Is the Corvette cart going to get a Lingenfelter motor in it?
14:19 That's an interesting question. That would be a lot of fun.
14:21 We're going to go drive the Vette cart day after tomorrow at Hallett Racing Circuit outside of Tulsa.
14:27 So we'll be able to answer that question after we blow that motor up.
14:30 Okay, what's the zip tie to horsepower ratio you were running on the Ratson?
14:34 Ooh, that's a good one.
14:36 It's actually changed.
14:37 The ratio of zip ties to power was quite high until the last go-around that we worked on the car.
14:43 And the things like the fuel pump are no longer attached to the chassis using zip ties.
14:48 Yeah, the fuel pump zip tie situation definitely took that ratio in favor of zip ties.
14:54 That's a great question, horsepower to zip tie ratio.
14:57 Usually the less horsepower you have, the more zip ties you need.
15:01 So it's sort of an inversely proportional scale if you look at it on the average.
15:05 JacobBRC93 says, "What are some must-haves, key factors in doing an LS swap?"
15:12 You've got to get your front drive thing sorted out.
15:15 There are so many different front drive assemblies, whether it be Corvette or Camaro or truck.
15:21 Or Holley makes an aftermarket kit and a couple different things.
15:24 Or you can get the super high dollar, like $3,000 billet overkill.
15:29 And he's talking about all the pulleys and all the things you want to drive with them,
15:33 like your power steering pump, AC compressor if you're a wussy.
15:38 The water pump.
15:39 Water pump, all that stuff.
15:41 You've got to sort that out because that will bite you in the budget if you don't pay attention to it going in.
15:47 Try and get something out of a junkyard that fits the car you have.
15:50 You almost always need to do some cutting and notching in front of your frame if you're doing it.
15:54 Yeah, in particular you want to pay attention to where the AC compressor is mounted on the motor
15:59 when you're getting that stuff from a junkyard because a lot of times the factory stuff puts it low on the passenger side of the motor
16:07 and it's right where the frame rail is in most swaps.
16:10 And there's some great kits out there from companies like Holley and MBR.
16:16 There's a bunch of them out there.
16:17 Holley has killer instructions on their stuff.
16:19 They do, and their stuff is cheaper than the billet because it's actually die-cast aluminum.
16:23 Yeah.
16:24 That's cool.
16:25 The other thing on an LS swap you always want to pay attention to is the oil pan situation.
16:29 Once again, do your research online.
16:30 There's truck pans, Corvette pans, F-body pans, GTO pans.
16:34 And Holley, once again, makes really the lowest profile cast aluminum pan that I know of.
16:41 And then there's the aftermarket fabricated sheet metal pans from Moroso or Myladon.
16:46 And I believe Myladon requires an external oil filter, and I don't think the Moroso does.
16:55 So those are the things you really want to look at, a couple of basics.
16:58 Hot Boats Daily asks, "When is the place craft going to be done finning it?"
17:02 I'm actually going to go home and work on it after this trip.
17:05 And I predict, but don't hold me to it, it'll be done this winter.
17:09 I will drag race it next summer.

17:44 A Tytracy73 asked, "Why can't you use a boat with camshaft and an engine that's for a vehicle?"
17:50 You can.
17:51 You totally can.
17:52 The only difference--
17:53 Unless it's reverse rotation.
17:54 Yeah.
17:55 Dude, nailed it.

17:59 If it's reverse rotation, the real only difference between a boat camshaft and a car is a boat
18:05 exhaust, if it's water injected, not water jacketed, you can suck the water back into
18:11 the cylinders if you have a lot of reversion.
18:13 So boat camshafts tend not to have a lot of overlap in them.
18:16 Explain to everybody why reverse rotation boat motors.
18:19 Well, some of them are mounted backwards in the boat.
18:23 Isn't it also if you have twin motors in the opposite rotating?
18:28 Yeah.
18:29 So it doesn't torque.
18:30 That's exactly why.
18:31 That's the other big reason.
18:32 You're nailing it today.
18:33 "Would you ever want to swap an American powertrain into a modern import?"
18:37 Of course.
18:38 We were just talking about doing that to a Miata a moment ago, right before we started
18:42 filming.
18:43 Just now we saw a Miata go down the road and he's like, "That guy's going to Texas."
18:46 And when he gets there, he's selling that Miata to get home.
18:49 And he's like, "Should we buy it?"
18:50 And I'm like, "There's not a lot you can do to a Miata except cut the front of it off,
18:55 put a rail and a tube axle under it, and make a dragster out of it."

19:00 Make like an old 60s comp coupe where the whole body's there, but then it's got a big,
19:03 long front end.

19:05 If you don't do that, then all Miatas belong on an autocross course and should never be
