00:00 In 1984, Volkswagen introduced the GLI to meet the need of the car buyer seeking more

00:10 performance in a compact sedan.

00:13 Twenty-three years and four presidents later, the GLI is still serving its purpose, but

00:17 with a few less angles and a lot more under the hood.

00:20 While the GLI is clearly a Jetta sibling, its exterior and interior features clearly

00:25 distinguish it as the all-star athlete of the bunch.

00:28 At the front, a blacked-out honeycomb grill takes center stage and fog lamps are nicely

00:32 integrated into the front bumper.

00:34 Around back, the big round taillights are wrapped in thin chrome, dual stainless exhaust

00:38 tips poke out below, and 17-inch alloy wheels keep the car rolling.

00:43 Of all the things that differentiate the GLI from the rest of the family, the biggest is

00:47 kept out of plain sight just beneath the striking V-hood.

00:50 The two-liter turbocharged engine pumps out 200 horsepower and 207 pound-feet of torque,

00:56 making this ride from zero to 60 in 7.2 seconds.

00:59 A six-speed manual transmission is there for the purist, and those seeking a little more

01:03 flexibility can opt for the six-speed manual DSG transmission, which can operate in fully

01:09 automatic or true manual mode.

01:11 Electronic stability and traction control are standard, as well as a tire pressure monitoring

01:15 system and a slew of airbags to keep you safe.

01:19 The sportiness of the exterior continues inside the cabin.

01:22 The interior is trimmed with aluminum, while silver frames the gauges and stylizes the

01:28 Standard features include a multifunction trip computer, eight-way adjustable sport

01:32 bucket front seats, auxiliary input jack, and a flat bottom steering wheel.
