Jay checks in with his 572 before continuing the tour of his bad to the bone machines
Transcript
00:00 At Jay Leno's Big Dog Garage, the world's first 572 engine is undergoing a major operation.
00:10 Jay has a lot of cool things in this place, but they're all put aside as his baby prepares
00:15 for a trip to Dr. Dino.
00:17 We need a dino that will accept different bell housings and different hookups.
00:24 And the super floor is going to do that real well for us.
00:26 And I call it diversification, HR, human resources, we're diverse, we have a diverse engine workforce.
00:33 Remember, this engine is historic.
00:37 This 572 we have here is the original, it's a prototype before they went into production
00:43 with the motor, so it's a pretty cool motor.
00:45 That's why we want to fix it rather than just put another one in.
00:50 Jay and Bernard suspect a blown head gasket, and soon their suspicions seem to be realized.
00:55 If you look inside this rocker cover, you can see the oil inside of it is kind of like
01:01 chocolatey milkshake looking thing.
01:03 This is an indication that it had water going into the oil, which we suspected.
01:08 With a gasket problem, the fluids in the engine ended up everywhere.
01:12 We've got a little bit of coolant, a little bit of water in it.
01:16 Well, this is not looking real pretty here.
01:18 You see how this gasket is kind of pushed aside?
01:21 It should be straight up and down.
01:23 As more parts come off, more clues are uncovered, but Bernard's still searching for the major
01:27 damage.
01:28 What do you think?
01:29 Well, I don't see anything real obvious at the moment.
01:33 Now, can you see where the gasket is blown?
01:40 We have a little bit of evidence back here where you can see some traces getting into
01:46 that cylinder.
01:48 So far, it looks like good news.
01:50 It wasn't my fault.
01:53 Boy, those are big pistons.
01:55 They're huge.
01:56 Look at the size of those pistons.
01:57 They're huge.
01:58 Hilarious.
01:59 As Bernard continues on the engine, Jay shows us hot rods of all shapes and sizes.
02:05 This next one is a rare machine, the very model of elegant Swiss design.
02:10 I think this would be a hot rod.
02:11 This is called a Monteverdi.
02:14 And it's not something you'll see every day.
02:16 And what this is, is a Swiss designed chassis with Italian design body with Chrysler 440
02:24 running gear.
02:26 It's basically a road runner that went to college in Europe.
02:29 Well, when Jay was in college, he was a car fanatic.
02:32 And even before that.
02:33 You know, I was never a big sports guy.
02:34 I didn't really watch a Super Bowl.
02:36 I didn't really watch baseball.
02:38 But when Ford won Le Mans, oh, that was like unbelievable to me.
02:41 Ford would actually beat Ferrari.
02:46 And Jay has a symbol of that history right here.
02:48 It's the Ford GT.
02:50 This is the very first one.
02:53 The first customer car.
02:55 They built ten cars for the family.
02:59 The eleventh car was auctioned for charity.
03:02 And I was the very first customer.
03:04 Think it can't be more rare?
03:06 Think again.
03:07 The car has been signed by everybody that built it.
03:13 This is a version of the original racing machine.
03:15 It's a car that Jay's been following for a very long time.
03:21 I thought they'd done a wonderful job.
03:23 It's just a little bit wider than it was originally.
03:27 And you know something?
03:28 If I could just be less than a little bit wider than I was in high school, that would
03:31 be great.
03:32 I'm a lot wider than I was in high school.
03:33 So they've done a better job with this than I did on me.
03:37 It's in exclusive collections and built as replicas.
03:40 One look and it's easy to see why Jay's not alone when it comes to the love of the great
03:44 GT.
03:45 I guess it qualifies as a muscle car, but it's a well-balanced muscle car that actually
03:50 stops and handles.
03:51 Because most muscle cars don't really stop or go around corners very well.
03:55 But this one does all of that.
03:57 And there's even more cars to see, along with the rehabilitation of Jay's history-making
04:02 572.
04:03 All coming up on Hot Rod TV.
04:06 So don't go away.
04:06 (rock music)
