Jos Buttler on England's 160-run win over Netherlands
Transcript
00:00 How pleased and relieved are you to end that sequence of results
00:05 and get back to celebrating a win?
00:06 Yes, really pleased.
00:08 It's been a frustrating time, not winning the games of cricket
00:12 or playing as well as we'd like, so delighted with the win today.
00:16 I thought Milan got us off to a great start,
00:19 and then the partnership from Stokes and Works was brilliant
00:24 to get us up to a really good score.
00:25 Was that when Ben came back into the squad,
00:29 he was to turn up at moments that counted,
00:31 and the Champions Trophy was in the balance perhaps,
00:34 and Ben was the man who stood up and was counted.
00:37 Is that the reason why you were happy to have him back on the show?
00:40 Yes, absolutely.
00:42 He wants the moments of getting us into semifinals
00:47 and trying to win finals as well.
00:48 But any time you need someone to stand up and the team's under pressure,
00:53 he's had a history of always doing that for whoever he's playing for.
00:56 So, yes, we're very lucky to have him in the team.
00:59 I thought his innings today were exceptional.
01:02 And there was some suggestion that maybe he should be getting away
01:06 from this competition and getting his operation done early
01:09 with an eye on the Test series.
01:11 I don't know if he broached that conversation with him or what,
01:15 but it doesn't seem like his style.
01:17 No, it's not his style at all.
01:18 He's here to play in the World Cup.
01:20 He wants to be here.
01:21 They say it's important for us to try and qualify
01:25 for that Champions Trophy,
01:27 and he wants to make sure we try and achieve that.
01:29 This gentleman here is from the baseball camp.
01:33 On your side, Kalamdar.
01:35 Yeah, you had a question.
01:36 Yes, did you please, I think,
01:39 when Stokes played with the fine century,
01:43 as a well-timed century,
01:44 I think you are hoping for the Champions Trophy qualification
01:47 despite of this World Cup.
01:49 How do you feel Stokes' century,
01:51 because it's very vital for your team to beat the Netherlands
01:55 to get points, and now I think you are moved to seventh place
01:58 in the points table.
02:00 Yeah, it's a vital inning, Sam.
02:02 You know, he managed lots of different situations throughout it really,
02:05 really well.
02:06 And his partnership with Chris Wokes was brilliant to get us up
02:10 to a really good score.
02:12 And we took that momentum into the bowling innings.
02:15 I thought Wokes and Willey started really well.
02:17 Dean, Vijay and then Malcolm.
02:21 What for you was probably the highlight of that performance?
02:24 Was it just the win itself or the fact that there was a little wobble,
02:29 I think, when yourself and Mo went,
02:31 and actually the way things have gone in this tournament,
02:33 maybe start thinking the worst,
02:35 but to then come back and be dominant again?
02:37 Yeah, I think the start is always pleasing.
02:41 I thought Milan played really well at the top and got us away.
02:45 And yeah, absolutely.
02:48 You know, for that partnership between Stokes and Wokes at a really crucial time
02:52 for us, two guys who've performed really, really well,
02:57 put together a brilliant partnership and they just managed it really well.
03:02 They were very smart.
03:03 They took good options when it was on.
03:05 And to end up with that score from the position we were in
03:09 when we lost those wickets in the middle there, I thought it was a great effort.
03:13 And I know this is not where you kind of wanted to be at this stage,
03:17 but just by the virtue of stopping five in a row
03:21 and all the, I don't know, the things going on in your head
03:24 and all the rest of it that you've been doing, just what does a victory mean?
03:29 Yeah, it's great.
03:31 You know, it's nice to...
03:32 It's not enjoyable losing games of cricket.
03:35 So, yeah, any game you play.
03:37 You know, I'm competitive, I want to win,
03:40 whether it's a game of cards or a game of cricket.
03:42 So, yeah, it's nice to end that sequence.
03:45 And we go to Kolkata, you know, not playing for what we
03:49 we wanted to be playing for, but a really vital match for us
03:52 in the grand scheme of things.
03:54 It's great to be heading there with something on the line.
03:55 Just a disclaimer first, Ben Stokes can score a century anywhere in the world.
04:02 But here I'm asking because he's familiar with Pune ground, Pune conditions,
04:07 Pune pitch as well, which is somewhat, you know, the commentators,
04:10 Nasir Hussain and Ravi Shastri were also constantly saying
04:13 he knows the pitch very well and the stadium.
04:15 You think the familiarity factor has anyway helped his century today?
04:19 Yeah, potentially.
04:22 I think his first IPL, he got a 100 here, didn't he?
04:25 And a few years ago, he was out on 99 in an ODI here as well.
04:29 So, yes, obviously a ground he likes playing at.
04:32 And yeah, that's great for us today.
04:34 Joss, there are obviously a lot of...
04:38 been a lot of head scratching and you've been asked, Matthew's been asked,
04:42 or everyone's been asked about what's been going wrong
04:46 and what has been the reason for this World Cup, the way it's gone.
04:50 But so is there anything that you can put your finger on
04:54 that helped things go right?
04:56 Or is it just being completely the same before this match
04:59 as it has before every other match?
05:01 And is there anything you can harness from this
05:05 that you can take into the last game in Kolkata?
05:10 Yeah, I think everyone's been frustrated,
05:13 but the guys have stayed tight.
05:17 Everyone stayed really close and kept working hard.
05:21 I think if you watch training yesterday,
05:23 the guys probably trained as hard as they trained all trip,
05:26 which shows the level of commitment and desire to put things right.
05:30 Don't get to the level of player that we've got in the squad
05:33 without having that personal pride and work ethic
05:36 and determination to put things right
05:39 when they're not going the way you want.
05:42 And we just, I guess, hung in there and trusted ourselves and,
05:46 you know, put trust in the guys
05:50 that at some point the wheel will turn.
05:53 Keep trying to deliver the same messages and play,
05:57 you know, committed to the style we want to.
06:00 Like I say, we got off to a really good start today.
06:02 It was something that's been a hallmark of the team.
06:04 So that was crucial.
06:06 And then handling pressure and coming out the other way,
06:09 which Stokes and Wokes did brilliantly well in that partnership.
06:12 So there are things we haven't done consistently enough
06:15 throughout the tournament, but
06:19 at some point, you know, top players will get it right.
06:21 And I mean, you mentioned training
06:24 and the level of intensity.
06:27 Was there a change before this match?
06:29 I guess, realising that this was pretty much, you know, last chance saloon?
06:34 No, I don't think so.
06:35 Everyone's been working hard for the whole trip.
06:38 But, yeah, like I say, it would be easy for us to tail off.
06:43 Or if things weren't,
06:44 you know, if guys weren't as committed, you know, you wouldn't get that level
06:47 of training, even when things haven't gone well.
06:49 So, yeah, credit to everyone for
06:51 still putting in and showing how much it means to play for England
06:57 and the pride in our performance.
06:59 And of course, Champions Trophy is something we're very focused on
07:03 and determined to make sure we're there.
07:06 So, what age from Ali, Matt and Chris?
07:09 Joss, you know better than most that cricket never stops.
07:14 Is it your intention to play in both legs of the Caribbean tour in December?
07:20 And also, is it your intention to captain the side in both legs
07:23 of the Caribbean tour in December?
07:25 Yeah, I'd like to.
07:27 Yeah, I know Rob Key arrives into India today, I think.
07:31 So, yeah, we can have some good conversations
07:35 with him and the coach and everyone and make a plan for that tour.
07:39 But, yeah, I'd like to.
07:41 Joss, you said it's not Ben Style to go home early.
07:45 Did you have to have a conversation with him at any point?
07:48 Did you ask him,
07:49 like, does he want to go home and sort it?
07:52 No, no, we haven't had any conversation.
07:55 And it's not Ben Style.
07:57 I say he's committed, he wants to play and he wants to put in performances,
08:01 which, you know, like you saw tonight.
08:03 Chris, Adam and then we'll take one at a time.
08:05 Hi Joss, how important is it that you guys finish with a win on
08:12 on Saturday against Pakistan, not just for Champions Trophy qualification,
08:17 but I guess for leaving with something you can build on for the future?
08:21 Yeah, vital.
08:23 You know, it's a huge game for us.
08:26 You know, we haven't performed the way we wanted to
08:30 this whole trip and we'd like to leave India putting in a proper performance.
08:34 So, yeah, it's a huge game for us.
08:35 Hi Joss, just on your batting, is there still
08:40 a smaller sense of frustration still today, even after winning?
08:43 Yeah, of course.
08:45 You know, you want to lead from the front and do that in your own performance.
08:49 So, yeah, very frustrated again not to contribute,
08:54 but I'll stick to the stuff that's served me well
08:58 over a long period of time when I've had these little runs of form
09:01 and I say hopefully come out the other side of it very soon.
09:04 Last one on the bat, please.
09:06 Hi Joss, you had a good win though.
09:08 Do you think this effort would be enough against Pakistan?
09:13 You had a slip up in between while batting.
09:17 So do you think similar performance would be good enough against Pakistan?
09:20 Yeah, we're a top team.
09:23 We look forward to a really good game against them and it will start again.
09:27 but we can take confidence from the stuff that we've done well today.
