00:00 Representative Rashida Tlaib's remarks on Israel have drawn the attention of her colleagues,
00:04 and most of them aren't happy.
00:06 On Tuesday, the House of Representatives voted to censure Tlaib, a Democrat from Michigan
00:10 and the only Palestinian American serving in Congress.
00:12 The resolution accused Tlaib of "promoting false narratives regarding the October 7,
00:17 2023 Hamas attack on Israel" and "calling for the destruction of the State of Israel."
00:22 It cited, among other points, her defense of the controversial phrase "from the river
00:25 to the sea," which the resolution described as a "genocidal call to violence to destroy
00:29 the State of Israel and its people."
00:31 On Friday, Tlaib had called the slogan an "aspirational call for freedom, human rights,
00:35 and peaceful coexistence, not death, destruction, or hate."
00:39 The censure vote broke down mostly on party lines, with all House Republicans supporting
00:42 it, though they were joined by 22 Democrats.
00:45 House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries was among the Democrats who criticized the use
00:49 of "from the river to the sea," though he voted against the censure resolution.
00:53 Tlaib defended her statements on the House floor.
00:55 "I can't believe I have to say this, but Palestinian people are not disposable.
01:02 We are human beings, just like anyone else."
01:07 This is the second time this year the House has censured one of its own members.
01:11 The first was when Adam Schiff, another Democrat, was condemned for his investigations into
01:15 former President Trump.
