Tim Allen on 'Last Man Standing' Resurrection and How Series Will Change -- And Stay the Same

Nancy Travis and Tim Allen are gearing up for 'Last Man Standing' to be back on air.

00:00 Even when we thought it was done, the fans said no way.

00:03 And I mean, I think we're largely back

00:05 because of their support.

00:06 - Because of them, they are.

00:06 - So here we are, yay!

00:07 (laughing)

00:08 Yay!

00:09 (upbeat music)

00:12 - I never gave up on it.

00:15 Fox said, "We're in, we're gonna go."

00:18 And this was on like in the middle of a dinner.

00:19 I put, took off and said,

00:21 "I didn't even know how to react to that."

00:23 'Cause I didn't, I'm one of these guys,

00:25 I won't believe it 'til I see it.

00:27 - The call came out of the blue.

00:28 I didn't see it coming and I was really excited to get it

00:31 and didn't quite believe it.

00:33 But I'm very happy to be back.

00:36 - All right, here we go from the top.

00:38 (bell ringing)

00:39 Stand by, ready ladies?

00:40 - We were involved in this angst, if you will, way early,

00:44 way before it was popular.

00:45 We had a point of view on the show

00:47 and Baxter pushed that point of view, the character I play.

00:50 And I appreciated his point of view.

00:51 And the writers, eventually we embraced it.

00:55 And we had a very mixed group of people writing this show

00:58 that would make fun, I mean, the liberal side

01:01 would make fun of the liberals,

01:02 the conservatives would make fun of the conservatives,

01:03 but overall, you got people that made fun.

01:07 - You can't be Donald Trump.

01:08 - Why, because I'm black?

01:10 - No, because you're not orange.

01:12 - And people have different points of view

01:13 about a lot of different things.

01:14 And to say it's, you know, conservative versus liberal

01:19 is just so minimizing.

01:21 - Right.

01:22 - It's not, it just is, that's not a show.

01:24 That's a nothing.

01:25 So it's just much fuller, much more complex.

01:29 - It's a sitcom.

01:30 - About family.

01:31 - It's a situation comedy.

01:32 - What you been doing up there?

01:34 - Honey, you only ask questions

01:35 that you really want the answers to.

01:36 - No, but unfortunately we won't have Molly Ephraim back

01:38 who was delightful as Mandy and that's sad for us,

01:42 but she's busy and we won't be having Flynn Morrison back.

01:47 He's also not available.

01:51 And so those parts are being recast.

01:54 - These new actors will bring something else to it,

01:55 but it's still essential.

01:56 - Hopefully it'll be the stories that draw people in

01:59 and connect people and, you know,

02:02 hopefully you fall in love with whatever the family is.
