00:00 And in Vietnam, more than 40 dogs, including a litter of 10 day-old puppies, were set free
00:05 from a slaughterhouse on Friday after the owner quit the dog meat trade.
00:11 An estimated 5 million dogs are killed for meat every day in Vietnam, the second highest
00:16 in the world after China, with some believing that eating the meat can help drive bad luck
00:21 away while others consider it a delicacy.
00:25 Authorities in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City have urged people not to consume dog meat,
00:30 but the trade continues.
00:32 Most of the dogs killed in Vietnam are stolen pets or strays snatched from the streets using
00:38 poison bait, painful taser guns or imported from surrounding countries.
00:50 We have a vet training program here as well, so all of the dogs can be provided with the
00:54 care, spayed, neutered, vaccinated, any other treatments that they need, and of course given
01:00 a lot of affection to help them overcome any trauma that they've undergone.
01:05 So here they'll receive all the rehabilitation they need until they can find their forever
01:09 families.

01:15 A significant number of dogs that are being supplied to the dog slaughterhouses are stolen
01:19 pets.
01:20 And whilst we've seen the government take some measures in increasing penalties for
01:24 those who steal pet animals, we still know that it's a big problem with lack of enforcement.
01:32 So we're hoping to work...
01:36 And like this, we have come to the end of this news brief.
