00:10 Today on the program, millions of Filipinos flock to cemeteries on All Saints Day.
00:17 And police personnel are on full alert to ensure their safety.
00:21 National Capital Region Police Office spokesperson Yuni Salas joins us in the program.
00:28 With later crisis in Gaza, Israel warns of a long war with Hamas as it launches a deadly
00:35 airstrike in a refugee camp.
00:38 Foreign Affairs Under Secretary Eduardo de Vega tells us more about all of this later.
01:04 Millions of Filipinos are expected to flock to cemeteries this All Saints Day to honor
01:08 their dead.
01:09 The Philippine National Police says over 27,000 police personnel are deployed nationwide and
01:14 thousands of assistance desks are set up in cemeteries to ensure the public's safety.
01:20 In Metro Manila, people visiting their departed loved ones arrived early at the Manila North
01:24 and South Cemeteries.
01:28 Let's go straight to the source of this story, NCRPO spokesperson, Police Lieutenant Colonel
01:33 Yuni Salas.
01:34 Ma'am, good morning.
01:35 Thanks for being here.
01:36 Good morning, Ma'am Diaz.
01:38 All right, Ma'am, maybe we can start off with you telling us about the preparations of the
01:43 Metro Manila Police this Undas.
01:46 Is there an updated number of personnel deployed on the ground?
01:50 Yes, Ma'am.
01:52 For the NCRPO, under the leadership of our Regional Director, Brigadier General Jose
01:57 Melencio Sinartates, Jr., we have deployed more than 11,000 personnel throughout the
02:02 74 identified cemeteries and 53 columbariums in the Metro.
02:07 All right, so 11,000 for the National Capital Region.
02:11 Ma'am, are there any specific areas of concentration for the police aside from obviously the areas
02:18 near the cemeteries and columbariums?
02:22 Yes, every cemetery and columbarium will be manned by our personnel, especially the biggest
02:28 cemeteries that we have identified here in the Metro.
02:31 We expect more visitors today because for the past three days, there were lesser visitors
02:37 according to the cemetery directors and administrators of the five largest cemeteries here in the
02:43 Metro.
02:44 Do we expect that number to increase today?
02:47 Yes, we expect that the numbers will increase today since yesterday was the culmination
02:54 of the BSKE 2023.
02:59 All candidates were already proclaimed and we expect that those who were involved in
03:05 the elections will now be visiting their departed ones.
03:09 All right, now are there any specific cities within the NCR that require more attention
03:15 from the PNP during this time?
03:18 Yes, especially in Manila where the Loma Cemetery, Chinese Cemetery and the Manila North is located,
03:27 we have deployed additional personnel to ensure the safety and security of all cemetery goers
03:32 there.
03:33 Why those specific areas, ma'am?
03:36 Yes, because their duke cemeteries are the largest cemeteries and yearly, according to
03:44 the Manila North cemetery director, they expect more than a million cemetery goers there regularly.
03:52 All right, now of course, you know, this is an event that takes place every year.
03:58 Through your experience, what are the most common crimes that are committed during this
04:03 season?
04:04 Yes, the most common crimes are those petty crimes like theft, physical injuries, but
04:10 because of the new route set by the cemetery, we expect that this will be prevented.
04:18 They have enforced a limited number of hours to visit the departed ones.
04:24 I believe in Manila North, the visitation is only from 5 a.m. to 5 p.m.
04:33 So unlike before, 24 hours, they are allowing all cemetery goers to visit.
04:39 And because of the limited number of hours and the prohibition of alcohol beverages,
04:47 we believe that this will be preemptive in the occurrence of other crimes.
04:53 Right, so hopefully lesser incidents of untoward incidents.
04:57 Ma'am, for now, what is the alert level for Metro Manila?
05:01 Since the start of the BSKE, the NCRPO has been on full alert status and we have deployed
05:09 the maximum number of personnel throughout the Metro to include the transportation hubs
05:13 where we expect the influx of passengers returning from the provinces.
05:18 Okay, so until when is the full alert level with all hands on deck?
05:24 Yes, here in the NCRPO, we will continuously enforce the full alert status until November
05:31 3.
05:32 Until November 3.
05:33 Okay, a couple more days to go.
05:35 At this point, ma'am, are you monitoring any kinds of threats?
05:41 We haven't monitored any threats from the local terrorist group or communist terrorist
05:46 groups and other criminal gangs.
05:49 But the NCRPO will not be complacent and we will remain on full alert to preempt any untoward
05:55 incidents.
05:56 Right.
05:57 Lastly, before I let you go, do you have any tips for those who will be leaving their homes
06:01 today to visit the cemeteries?
06:03 Yes, before leaving their homes, for those who will be leaving, will be going and visiting
06:09 their loved ones, ensure the safety and security of your houses and of course, as much as possible,
06:17 don't leave your house unattended.
06:21 And of course, always observe personal security.
06:26 We assure that the NCRPO police force will implement intensified programs to secure your
06:34 areas.
06:35 And for any emergencies, you may report to the nearest police station.
06:41 And our numbers are available on our Facebook page and Twitter accounts.
06:46 All right.
06:47 Some very important reminders there, ma'am.
06:48 Maraming salamat.
06:49 Thank you for joining us this morning.
06:51 That was NCRPO spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Eunice Salas.
06:57 When we return, Israel warns of a long war with militant group Hamas as it launches a
07:01 deadly airstrike on a refugee camp.
07:04 We'll speak with Foreign Affairs Under Secretary Eduardo de Vega about the status of Filipinos
07:09 in crisis-stricken Gaza.
