The 9th Emperor Gods Festival concluded with a grand procession as the deities embarked
00:09
on their ceremonial voyage after nine days of festivities.
00:13
Thousands of devout followers congregated at various temples in Penang to pay their
00:21
respects on Monday night.
00:22
They gathered around the adorned floats and the Emperor Boat belonging to each temple
00:28
before these sacred vessels were sent off on their journey.
00:32
Leading the procession were over 20 devoted individuals who had pierced themselves with
00:40
skewers as a means to ward off malevolent spirits and seek divine blessings.
00:47
The highlight of the evening was the ceremonial departure of the Emperor Boat which was set
00:52
ablaze and gently pushed out to sea.
00:56
The 9th Emperor Gods Festival started on October 15, the first day of the ninth lunar month.
01:03
The nine-day festival observed by Taoists is dedicated to the nine sons of Dou Mu, the
01:09
goddess of the North Star who is believed to control the books of life and death.
01:15
Her sons, they fight as Ren Huang or human sovereigns, are said to have the ability to
01:20
cure illnesses and bless devotees with luck, wealth and longevity.
01:26
Devotees believe the gods come through the waterway and processions are usually held
01:31
from the temples to the river or seashore as a symbolic gesture.
