Genesis GV70: Engineering a Win

The Genesis GV70 is MotorTrend’s 2022 SUV of the Year. Join MT’s Ed Loh and Amanda Busick as they take the vehicle for a spin to see why.

00:03 We've all experienced it,

00:04 when you're surprised by something

00:05 you never really knew you needed.

00:07 Well, our editors certainly did,

00:09 the very first time they encountered the Genesis GV70.

00:13 They fell in love with its stunning exterior design,

00:16 its high-tech, sumptuous interior,

00:18 and of course, how much fun it is behind the wheel.

00:21 It's why we named it Motor Trend's 2022 SUV of the Year.

00:25 You know, the luxury SUV space is incredibly crowded,

00:28 and to stand out, you gotta take a risk.

00:31 And in this case, it really paid off.

00:33 (upbeat music)

00:36 So what really stuck out to our judges

00:46 when they first came upon the Genesis GV70

00:49 is how athletic and sporty it looks.

00:51 It's got a low, wide stance

00:53 that's really set off by the quad headlights

00:55 and that very beautiful cressed grill.

00:58 And then down the sides,

00:59 some very interesting and sporty line work.

01:02 Genesis calls it parabolic lines,

01:04 and it's set off by some unique bright work

01:07 around the C pillar.

01:08 And on the back end,

01:10 quad taillights really emphasize its athleticism

01:13 and sportiness as it goes down the road.

01:15 The entire Motor Trend team was blown away

01:23 while test driving this car,

01:25 and that's simply because the GV70

01:27 does not sacrifice comfort for dynamic performance.

01:31 Starting underneath the hood,

01:32 you have that available 3.5 liter twin turbo engine

01:36 that produces 375 horsepower.

01:41 You also have an adaptive suspension,

01:43 and it also comes available with 21 inch wheels.

01:46 The Genesis GV70 comes standard with an all-wheel drive

01:49 and an eight-speed automatic transmission.

01:51 That allows the driver to cut loose when wanted

01:54 and slow down when needed.

01:56 This car is much more than just a pretty face.

01:59 - So, you know, when it comes to how well

02:01 this vehicle executes its mission as a luxury SUV,

02:04 absolutely nails it.

02:05 I mean, just look at this cabin.

02:07 Form follows function in a beautiful and elegant way.

02:11 Materials are very rich, very premium feeling,

02:13 and there's tons of technology too.

02:15 14.5 inch touchscreen display,

02:18 very easy to use and super helpful.

02:21 And you know, the second row passengers

02:23 are not second class either.

02:24 The Genesis team spent a lot of time carving out room

02:27 for them and giving them a ton of standard luxury features.

02:31 - And that extends to the efficiency as well.

02:33 The 2.5 liter, it matches the other gas powered performers

02:37 in the category.

02:39 The 3.5 liter, while you do trade

02:42 on some of that efficiency, you pick up the extra power.

02:45 - When it comes to safety,

02:50 the GV70 is an IIHS Top Safety Pick Plus,

02:53 and what's even better, safety is not an add on cost

02:57 unlike other luxury manufacturers.

02:59 Every GV70 comes standard with a suite of safety systems.

03:04 - Traditional luxury automakers often play it safe,

03:07 but Genesis took a big risk with the 2022 GV70

03:11 and it paid off.

03:12 - This vehicle absolutely nails it

03:14 against our awards criteria.

03:16 - And that is why they're this year's

03:18 Motor Trend SUV of the Year.
