Newcastle jockey Dylan Gibbons talks on Tuesday about his Everest chance.
Transcript
00:00 We're here with Gunn Newcastle jockey Dylan Gibbons ahead of his massive ride in the Everest
00:05 coming up on Saturday.
00:06 He's riding here at Newcastle today.
00:07 So Dylan, pre-barrier draw leading into the race.
00:11 You've ridden the horse this morning.
00:13 How are the nerves and expectations after this morning?
00:15 Yeah, the nerves have settled a bit because the way he went this morning he went like
00:18 an absolute rocket.
00:19 So he's gave me a lot of confidence going into Saturday and I'm trying not to think
00:23 about it too much because it's a pretty exciting race.
00:25 I'm trying not to get ahead of myself and pull my jets until the main day and hopefully
00:30 we can lever it.
00:31 And you've already had some great success, mate, winning the Group 1 with Explosive Jack
00:36 in the Sydney Cup.
00:37 But this is another thing altogether, isn't it?
00:40 It's a special event.
00:41 Yeah, exactly.
00:42 It's obviously not labelled an official Group 1 but it's a race we've got in Australia and
00:46 I don't even know if it is in the world too.
00:48 So it's a great race to be a part of and just to have a ride in, it's a massive thrill and
00:53 I'm going into it with a live chance which makes it even better.
00:55 So I'm looking forward to the day.
00:57 And just to being the race as an apprentice, you're only relatively young still, I mean
01:01 where's the gratitude there, mate?
01:04 Obviously you've gained this ride from the start of this prep and you've kept it all
01:07 the way through so a lot of people have shown a lot of faith in you.
01:10 Yeah, exactly, mate.
01:11 I've had a great association pretty much through my whole career so far and obviously through
01:17 his support and loyalty he tried to kick up for me to get the ride and thankfully enough
01:21 the owners were on board and they even jumped on so through their great support I've been
01:26 able to get this amazing opportunity and hopefully I can take it with both hands that day.
01:30 And where do you see yourself in the run, mate?
01:32 In your head how's it going to play out?
01:34 Yeah, look, it's hard to tell with him, he's so casual early so I'm anticipating him to
01:38 be back in the second half and I'd be shocked if that changes but as long as he gets a nice
01:42 smothered run and hopefully at the top of the rise I'm not spotting him too much start
01:46 and if that's the case, as long as he lets rip like I know he can it's going to be an
01:49 exciting last little bit.
01:51 be cheering on. Good luck, Mike. Thank you.
