00:00 Hello everyone, welcome to the second week of Pink October and on this
00:05 occasion rather than focusing the Pink October for breast cancer for women
00:10 we're focusing on breast cancer that happens to men
00:14 Breast cancer happening in men? Don't be shocked because it's the same tissues
00:25 and it can also happen to men. In fact 1% of all breast cancer actually happens to
00:32 men and to some degree the actual cancer itself are a lot more serious when it's
00:39 presented to men. I'll give you some statistics. In the United States and in
00:45 2021, 2,650 breast cancer were diagnosed. About 560 deaths of men as a result of
00:57 breast cancer were recorded in the United States. So if you think about it
01:02 that constitutes 1% of total number of breast cancer in the United States and
01:07 also out of 2,600, 500 which is around 20% will result in fatality. Actually the
01:16 presentation itself is the same. Just like women, there will be a lump and the
01:21 lump itself may actually get bigger and eventually cause lymph node or actually
01:26 muscular invasion. However in men, because the tissues of the breast is
01:31 significantly less and also there's this stigma and unawareness of breast
01:37 cancer in men, then men don't go and seek treatment until it's too late and
01:43 therefore it's always presented late. So as far as men's concerned, it is always
01:50 the same way of diagnosis breast cancer. Regular self-examination, if someone
01:57 feels a lump, then go and see doctor soon enough. With a mammography or
02:03 ultrasound scan, if that lump is detected to be abnormal, biopsy may be necessary
02:09 and following that one may need to have the removal of the breast or the removal
02:16 of the lump itself. In fact there are certain individuals who are more at risk
02:20 of getting breast cancer. If you've got family history at a young age of getting
02:25 breast cancer, you may carry a gene called BRCA gene. Other medical
02:30 conditions such as cirrhosis of the liver and also Klinefelter which is a
02:36 type of genetic conditions that caused by a mutation of the chromosome may also
02:42 result in the risk of breast cancer. For the next installation we're going to
02:47 move away from cancer and talk about breasts that should not happen in men, a
02:53 condition called gynecomastia or man boobs. You know what to do, stay tuned for
02:59 next week's Putting Dr. J on the Spot.
