Marshmello chatted with Billboard’s Jessica Roiz on the red carpet of the 2023 Billboard Latin Music Awards.

00:05 Are you pumped? You are a two time finalist.

00:07 I'm so pumped to be here and I'm so honored and grateful.

00:09 And I just kind of like, you know, when you're just happy to be here,

00:12 I'm just happy to be here. So I could see your happiness.

00:15 Yeah, that's my permanent smile.

00:17 Permanent smile really helps.

00:18 Yeah. El Merengue is one of, you know, one of the songs that's nominated.

00:23 Manuel told us that that song, you guys didn't have a concept.

00:27 It was born from scratch.

00:28 Take us back. Me and Manuel had never met.

00:30 And so he just comes to the studio and I'm just like, OK, like, let's just wing it.

00:35 Nothing was ready.

00:36 And we just sat there and just from the ground up just made it happen.

00:40 So and I hit pretty crazy.

00:42 There's some video footage somewhere of all that happening.

00:44 Yeah. So hopefully, hopefully, you can put it out.

00:46 13 weeks at number one in the tropical airplay chart.

00:50 Did you ever think you were going to be number one in a Bill Burr tropical airplay chart?

00:53 Never. And like I said, I'm just happy to be here.

00:57 And just so just, you know, I tried my hardest with Manuel.

01:00 Manuel is such an amazing artist.

01:01 And we both just kind of came together with our skill sets and and made it happen.

01:06 So, you know, he's amazing.

01:08 I love that you're collaborating not only with Manuel, but also Young Mico and Farruko.

01:13 What have you learned from these Latin collaborators?

01:15 Well, first things first, I brushed up on my Spanish a lot.

01:19 Towards the end, I would have Spanish conversations.

01:23 And I grew up speaking Spanish

01:25 when I was like really young until I was actually up to about like 20.

01:28 And they would always turn to me because I would respond to them in English.

01:31 And they're speaking in Spanish.

01:33 They're like, dude, how do you know this?

01:34 Like, how do you know what we're saying?

01:35 And I'm like, oh, well, you know, I'm Marshmello.

01:38 Yeah, yeah, yeah.

01:38 I just know things.

01:39 Yeah. So yeah, that was fun.
