00:08 Welcome to a practice edition of the Garden Report, a big practice here for the Celtics

00:12 heading into a busy week of games next week.

00:16 They start on Sunday against the 76ers at the Garden.

00:20 Then they head down to New York and Philadelphia for a pair of road exhibitions.

00:25 So there won't be a ton of practice time next week.

00:27 They're back here on Saturday for a walkthrough I'm sure that we'll get to talk to a few guys

00:32 after and take a look at.

00:34 But this is that first, or last rather, big full go practice to cap a week of double sessions

00:41 and scrimmaging and pretty intense, driven, focused sessions here.

00:50 Now they're not super loud.

00:51 We can't watch them of course.

00:53 So we've mostly just listened in to them pumping in the noise and you'll hear the typical communicating

00:59 on the floor from up above that you wouldn't otherwise, that you would normally hear at

01:04 a practice rather.

01:06 So as I've said all week, the biggest thing I'm taking away from practice here are those

01:11 missing voices from a year ago.

01:13 And it's not necessarily a good thing or a bad thing.

01:15 It's just different.

01:16 There are a lot of new voices here, acclimations going on.

01:21 And this roster as a whole isn't the loudest roster now.

01:24 The guy who's filling that space so far here, Paul Pierce.

01:30 Around this team again and what a joy to watch him out there doing shooting competitions with

01:35 Sam Cassell.

01:36 Him out there joking around with Tatum and the rest of this team's core.

01:41 Joe Mazzuola in the mix with those guys as well.

01:44 Jason Tatum today said Sam Cassell is the loudest person he's ever met.

03:22 This real energy that I think is going to be infectious if it's around this team enough.

03:26 Now, Pierce talked to us today as well about both the summer sessions that he did with

03:30 Brown and Tatum, them trying to get stronger, them working on their games, him telling them

03:35 some stories about what worked and might have worked with that 2008 team on their way to

03:40 a championship.

03:41 But he also talked about how this is a different process this team's gone through.

03:45 They've gone deep in the playoffs and fallen short.

03:48 He feels that hunger given those shortcomings over the last couple years here, whereas the

03:52 2008 team pretty much came together in a day and got it done.

03:56 They struggled at points in that postseason, but in an improbable fashion, clicked enough

04:02 in that first season together that they scored their championship in 2008 right away.

04:09 That's different, he said, than what he sees this team struggling through, going through.

04:13 And he does expect to be along for the ride, even on some road games.

04:16 You wonder if he's almost going to be a de facto coach this year, Paul Pierce, which

04:20 I know is going to thrill a ton of fans out there.

04:23 And I think his presence is well welcomed by the star of this team, given his pedigree,

04:28 given that he was one of the best players in the league when they were watching growing

04:33 up.

04:34 So he's been an enormous presence so far.

04:36 Cassell hasn't left Tatum's side in the sessions that we've seen here.

04:40 And as I've talked about throughout, Joe a lot more comfortable and empowered by having

04:46 these guys in his corner, having the new assistant coaches in place.

04:50 It's definitely a more professional, business-like atmosphere, as I talked about yesterday with

04:54 Joe Sway here.

04:56 Other notes, zone defense a real thing.

04:59 Joe Mazzullo looking for those curveballs.

05:01 Curious if we're going to see that on Sunday against the Sixers after they tried it in

05:04 summer league here.

05:05 But it's still a process of getting comfortable with it for these guys.

05:09 And other things that they might throw in his wrinkles this year, same thing.

05:13 Can these guys be comfortable using it?

05:15 And Jordan Walsh, who we talked to today as well, says he's currently getting his reps

05:20 with the two-way guys.

05:21 So still an uphill battle, it seems like, for him to get minutes here.
