Pro driver Randy Pobst hot laps the 2020 Ferrari F8 Tributo around WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca for MotorTrend's 2020 Best Driver's Car presented by Tire Rack.

00:27 The Ferrari F8 Tributo has its work cut out for it.
00:31 Not only does this year feature stiff competition,
00:34 but three years ago, the 488 GTB
00:37 laid down a blistering one minute 31.68 second lap
00:42 around WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca
00:44 before going on to win the entire competition.
00:48 Somehow, Ferrari has managed to squeeze
00:50 another 50 horsepower from its 3.9 liter twin turbo V8
00:55 for a total of 711.
00:57 The Tributo is also an essentially meaningless
00:59 14 pounds lighter than the 488.
01:02 On the road before we got to the racetrack,
01:04 the brakes gave all us judges pause
01:07 as they just didn't feel quite right.
01:10 Ferrari had a technician come down
01:11 and sort out the stoppers.

03:10 I took the advice of the man from Ferrari,
03:14 running gear higher everywhere,
03:15 and that helped a lot because this engine's so powerful,
03:21 it can't take that huge power when you're in the corner.
03:24 You roll it on, it works beautifully.
03:26 - Well, Mr. Fancy Ferrari, how'd that go?
03:38 - Well, the Ferrari's a lively car.
03:42 It's got incredible power.
03:44 It's so much fun to pull the gears down the straightaway.
03:47 I used the manual mode.
03:49 I wanted to run a gear higher in almost every corner
03:53 to keep it manageable.
03:55 - Right, 'cause otherwise the torque just overwhelms it.
03:57 - Yeah, it just goes.
03:59 It's a missile, I think is your word.
04:01 - Yeah, yeah, it is.
04:01 - And it's a good word for it.
04:03 It's not so good at stopping.
04:05 I would like the brakes to have more bite,
04:07 and I remember the 488 was like this a couple years ago.
04:10 - Yeah, yeah, we were doing a lot of Ferrari like that,
04:12 but before we get to critiquing the car, though,
04:14 if there is a fault, it's easy to forgive
04:17 because you just love it, you know?
04:18 - Oh, I love it.
04:19 It's beautiful.
04:20 - Yeah, it is.
04:21 - And beautiful things, you know,
04:22 we'll put up with a lot of grief.
04:23 - We'll put up with a lot.
04:24 - For the beauty.
04:26 - All right, so here's a big question, you ready?
04:27 So the Lamborghini Huracan Evo,
04:30 you did a 132.85 second lap.
04:35 Did you go faster in that Italian car or in this one?
04:38 - That Lamborghini was really hooked up.
04:41 I think it was faster.
04:43 - It wasn't.
04:44 The Ferrari was quicker.
04:45 - Yeah, the Ferrari was a 132.27 second lap.
04:49 - Horsepower!
04:50 - Yeah, it's just, it's a twin turbo V8,
04:52 sadly beats a naturally aspirated V10.
04:55 And there you have it.
