00:00 I'm looking for what I would want to buy on the shelf.
00:03 That eye catcher, that head turner.
00:05 You know, when you're flicking through all the cards
00:07 of Hot Wheels, what's that one that's gonna make you go,
00:09 oh man, that's the one.
00:11 (upbeat music)
00:14 Hey everybody, I'm Nick Calderone,
00:24 host of Right This Minute.
00:25 We're in Phoenix at the Hot Wheels Legends store.
00:28 We're looking for something that's unique,
00:30 hopefully handcrafted, you know, garage built.
00:32 That head turner, you can walk the aisles
00:35 and you can say, yeah, that's a cool car,
00:36 that's a cool car, that's a Hot Wheels car.
00:39 And that's what we're looking for.
00:40 (upbeat music)
00:43 - Hi, my name's Harry Gerke.
00:54 It's a 1973 Volkswagen Bug.
00:57 It's got a full tube chassis on it.
00:59 It's got a Chevy 2.4 liter EcoTec in it.
01:02 It's very reliable, so we could drive this thing anywhere
01:05 and it's got tons of power.
01:06 I mean, this thing would probably go
01:07 over 100 miles an hour easy.
01:09 King shocks all the way around,
01:11 14 inches of wheel travel on it.
01:13 I've got a Android tablet that runs some of the car in there.
01:16 It hooks up to the motor through a Bluetooth
01:18 and it tracks just for our GPS
01:20 and everything else like that for off road.
01:22 A lot of thumbs up, a lot of pictures,
01:23 a lot of people want to ride.
01:25 (upbeat music)
01:27 - My name's Mitch Elsberry.
01:28 This is a 2017 Radio Flyer.
01:31 Well, it's got a 2007 LS3 Corvette motor in it.
01:35 It's got a 700R automatic transmission
01:38 and it's got a Ford Lincoln rear end in it
01:40 with the factory Lincoln airbags.
01:42 Driving on the freeway, people go to pass me
01:44 and they'll slow down.
01:45 They got their phones hanging out the windows,
01:47 holding up traffic, thumbs up everywhere I go.
01:49 The kids love it and that's what I built it for,
01:52 for the kids.
01:53 (upbeat music)
01:55 - My name's Tony Armey
01:59 and the car I brought is a 1968 Ford Mustang.
02:01 Took me about 14 years to do from start to finish.
02:04 We used a 2006 Ferrari F430 4.3 liter
02:07 and then strapped a couple of turbos to it as well
02:09 from Nelson Racing.
02:10 The whole car itself is controlled from an iPad.
02:13 Everything's controlled from Bluetooth.
02:14 There's no switches, there's no knobs or anything.
02:16 So everything's either from my phone
02:18 or the iPad that's in the central console.
02:19 A lot of components on the car were 3D printed,
02:21 skinned in carbon.
02:22 So we tried to really bring all the technology up to date,
02:26 try to make kind of a modern super car
02:27 out of a vintage Mustang.
02:29 (upbeat music)
02:31 - Come on, come on, come on.
02:38 - Yes, go ahead.
02:40 - We're gonna wait to get dinner.
02:41 - Thanks guys for coming out and judging this thing.
02:43 This has been a challenge.
02:46 There's a lot of really cool cars here.
02:48 So let's talk a little bit about what we like.
02:50 - You know, my favorite car here
02:52 has definitely been the blue car from Carter.
02:55 One of the kind of unique builds that we've seen.
02:58 - I mean, he did so much work himself.
03:00 It's just amazing to see the level of effort
03:03 that went into that build.
03:04 - There's some cars with some good history,
03:06 but there's some good family ties too
03:08 to some of these builds.
03:09 So it makes it really hard.
03:11 - Hard not to talk about the family build
03:13 without mentioning that GMC bus.
03:15 It's huge, big wheels, stands out, looks cool.
03:19 That thing was awesome.
03:20 - Well, let's talk a little bit about our finalists, right?
03:22 The Cantra prototype we talked about,
03:24 the VW square back gasser, that 49 GMC bus.
03:29 Those really, I think, stood out amongst all the cars here.
03:32 (upbeat music)
03:35 - How's it going, everybody?
03:42 Thanks for coming out to our Hot Wheels Legends Tour
03:45 here in our Phoenix, Arizona stop.
03:47 So good to have everyone here.
03:48 Such an amazing turnout of cars.
03:50 First of all, I wanted to give a big shout out
03:53 to the Walmart here.
03:54 And I wanna give a shout out to our partners as well,
03:57 Mobile One, Dickies, Mechanics, and Xbox.
04:01 - We're gonna do the winner here,
04:02 and I know that's why you're all here.
04:04 After a lot of chat, we finally came up with the winner today
04:08 at the Phoenix Legends Tour to be Ron Howe.
04:11 Ron is the guy that built
04:14 the two cool Volkswagen square back.
04:17 - This is my 1971 Volkswagen square back, type three.
04:22 It is a twin engine gasser style.
04:24 I built this with me and my sons
04:26 to try to have a better father and son bond.
04:29 I wanted the carburetor sticking out through the hood
04:32 because it adds to the gasser profile and the gasser look.
04:34 I think the red makes it pop.
04:36 The stance, the tires, you know, it's got fat tires.
04:38 Once the other one was the interior,
04:40 I wanted to make sure that the interior was custom made,
04:43 but it was also nicely done and finished.
04:45 Everything on the engines is all mechanical.
04:48 It has points, it has a condenser in it,
04:51 it has old school coils.
04:52 There's no electronic ignition on it anywhere.
04:55 It is carburetors, it's not fuel injected.
04:57 For me, it's a big honor to be, you know,
04:59 chosen by Hot Wheels for what I built.
05:01 You know, I think it might turn out to be a neat little car.
05:04 (car engine revving)
05:07 - Really happy with the car we picked here in Phoenix.
05:09 You still have an opportunity to get selected.
05:12 Sign up for the Hot Wheels Legends Tour.
05:15 We hope to see you at the next stop.
