Multiple people including a child have been killed in a horrific head on collision with a road train north of Katherine. Forensic investigators have been at the scene since Friday afternoon trying to identify the victims.

00:09 Police, Fire and Emergency Services, St John were met with a terrible scene
00:14 and first was trying to save those that could be.
00:19 A four wheel drive collided head on with a road train just south of Pine Creek yesterday afternoon,
00:25 killing everyone on board.
00:27 Police say the two occupants of the truck are lucky to survive.
00:30 The driver and the passenger of the truck were medevaced to hospital.
00:36 There was an infant child that was found deceased from the vehicle
00:41 and there are a number of people in the vehicle also deceased.

00:48 The task for police now is to identify passengers through the four wheel drive's ownership records,
00:53 the impact so violent that police are unable to say how many people are inside the car.
00:59 We have our disaster victim identification team here at the moment processing the scene.
01:05 Their role is a methodical role to identify the deceased persons in the vehicle.
01:10 What caused the vehicle to steer into the path of the southbound road train is still unknown,
01:16 but the incident, devastating for everyone involved.
01:19 I'd like to acknowledge the work that those members of the public did in trying to help out on a scene
01:25 which would have been quite terrifying in terms of the fire that would have been preventing them
01:29 from pulling people out of the vehicle at the time.
01:32 In an effort to determine what happened in the lead up to the collision,
01:35 police are appealing for any witnesses who are travelling in the area between 2 and 5pm yesterday to come forward.
