01:11 When her mother died, we start to understand her layers.

01:23 She's such a deep character.
01:25 There's no doubt that the John that Kevin is playing
01:27 later in his life has both mellowed
01:30 and, strangely enough, is hardened
01:32 by the experience of the life that he's led,
01:35 the loss of his wife.
01:36 But the character is deeply both good...

01:41 ...and goes very bad.
01:42 He's got an angel and a devil on each shoulder,
01:45 and they oftentimes are screaming
01:47 one louder than the other,
01:48 and I think he sort of follows that path
01:50 and desperately wants to come back to being good.
01:53 And there's this extraordinary current
01:55 that he's battling with.
01:57 And in the time that I play him,
01:59 he's hungrier to be good
02:01 until the death of his wife just shatters him
02:03 to a point that he stops caring.
02:06 He becomes relentless in some ways towards his own family.

02:11 There are thoughts that are being shared
02:13 through the narrative of this story
02:15 that are really kind of intrinsic
02:16 to the ideas of Native people.
02:19 The relationship between those who came
02:21 and took the land from the people
02:23 that have been here for thousands of years
02:24 is in the marrow of the first people.
02:27 I'm gonna buy your ranch first.
02:29 I'm gonna pull down every fence.
02:31 It'll look like it used to when it was ours.

02:36 Taylor's so brilliant in writing these things.
02:39 To have those confrontations,
02:40 they're so much fun to play out.
02:42 It's such a great battle that's been structured.
02:45 John Dutton is not just stubborn,
02:46 but he's also romantic about the history
02:49 that acquired all this.
02:50 You want to steal cattle?
02:52 Now you get the ball.
02:53 My getting arrested had everything to do
02:56 with what John's trying to manipulate,
02:58 but it's not as threatening to me,
03:00 and he doesn't even know it until I tell him that,
03:03 and that's gonna leave him with a lot more to think about.
