00:00 Take 22.
00:03 I'm Oli Davis, this is the WrestleTalk News.
00:11 On Tuesday 12th September, WWE and the UFC finished their five months of business foreplay
00:17 and finally updated their relationship status to…
00:20 Merged Corporate Entity.
00:22 An announcement that came with our first official image of Vince McMahon's new gimmick - owner
00:26 of several regional branches of the Carphone Warehouse.
00:31 Also a supervillain.
00:32 Because WWE was never actually sold to the gigantic talent management agency Endeavor,
00:37 it was merged with the Endeavor-owned UFC and spun off to create a new company called
00:42 TKO Group Holdings, which Endeavor own 51% of, and the former WWE shareholders own the
00:49 remaining 49%.
00:50 There are two main business, business, business theories behind merging these combat sports
00:55 companies together.
00:56 1.
00:57 Saving Money!
00:58 Although professional wrestling is predetermined and MMA is a sporting competition, they share
01:03 many function similarities.
01:05 That means certain generic utility departments that both companies would have their own version
01:09 of - like accounting or marketing or licensing - those can be merged together.
01:15 This was one of the first actions of TKO, with over 100 back office terminations reported
01:20 on Friday.
01:21 The other theory, however, 2.
01:23 Making Money!
01:25 Sure, to us fans, WWE and UFC can be more different, but to a TV company or mainstream
01:32 audience they are similar enough.
01:34 That is, they have people fighting each other, to benefit from being sold as a bulk package.
01:39 WWE and UFC are so well known, putting them together can be a huge advantage when negotiating
01:45 new deals with partners.
01:46 Which is exactly what is happening as WWE's big $1 billion TV rights contracts are soon
01:53 up for renewal.
01:54 Very interestingly, Endeavor and TKO's President and COO Mark Shapiro has spoken to The Town
01:59 with Matthew Bologna about this very strategy, saying they could "strike a short-term deal
02:06 just to align the two media contracts."
02:08 While WWE's TV rights deal expires in October 2024, UFC's media deal with Disney runs out
02:15 in 2025.
02:17 Shapiro is seemingly suggesting they could strike a short-term deal for WWE to line it
02:22 up to expire at the same time as UFC's.
02:25 So TKO can offer a joint package to certain networks.
02:29 That would allow, say, Peacock, if they got that deal, to brand themselves as the home
02:34 of all combat sports.
02:36 Which could be a very attractive idea given the strength of live sports in a landscape
02:40 of heavily falling TV viewership.
02:42 But it's not just big corporate benefits that come with packaging the WWE and UFC brands
02:47 together.
02:48 It could likely also profoundly change the fan experience.
02:52 Speaking on the Bill Simmons podcast, Nick Khan outlined his vision of an All-Star TKO
02:57 weekend where SmackDown goes on Friday, UFC on Saturday with pay-per-view, and WWE goes
03:03 with a premium live event on Sunday.
03:05 There's also Raw on Monday there, Nick.
03:07 He also spoke about how they wouldn't counter-program each other, with UFC and WWE not scheduling
03:12 big pay-per-views for the same day.
03:14 Which is probably bad news for AEW, as that means TKO can, and most likely will, book
03:20 a big show from either whenever AEW runs their weekend events.
03:24 But Khan also teased what sounds like a mega-draft.
03:29 When talking about big, spectacle events outside pay-per-views, Khan mentioned the first NFL
03:34 Draft in Philadelphia, where they took it out of New York and got hundreds of thousands
03:39 of people there.
03:40 What is there like that for UFC and WWE that could work?
03:43 That's something we're hyper-focused on.
03:46 Are they hyper-focused about an annual WWE Draft standalone event?
03:50 Is it one that has a UFC event the same weekend?
03:52 Or one that involves talent from both companies allowing a UFC fighter to be drafted to the
03:57 WWE roster?
03:59 What would you want to see from something like that?
04:01 Fancy book Dominik Mysterio getting drafted to the UFC in the comments down below.
04:05 Also CM Punk return confirmed.
04:11 Another detail has come out about the WWE and UFC merger from the Wrestling Observer,
04:15 but if Endeavor sells TKO Group Holdings at any point, they are unable to re-enter either
04:20 the MMA or pro wrestling business for five whole years.
04:25 This is even longer than the three years Turner Broadcasting agreed to when they sold WCW
04:30 in 2001.
04:31 Because yes, even WWE's own corporate merger includes a crazy non-compete clause.
04:38 Bet AEW wish they had that for Jade Cargill.
04:40 How's that for a contract segue?
04:43 Following her return to AEW on the Saturday 9th episode of Collision, Unlost to Chris
04:47 Statlander on the 15th episode of Rampage, and her own comments on AEW that "there's
04:52 no other place I would want to be" from the previous week, PWInsider is reporting
04:56 Cargill's AEW contract has now in fact expired, and she's expected to join WWE and head
05:03 to the Performance Center this week.
05:05 This could potentially make her available to debut on TV as early as tonight's episode
05:10 of Raw, because if this is truly an AEW contract expiry, there's no non-compete period.
05:16 Apparently the amount of money WWE is potentially paying her to beat an AEW offer means she'll
05:22 head straight to the main roster as opposed to NXT.
05:25 Now that the TKO merger is complete, it feels as though whatever creative plans Triple H
05:29 had in store for the post-WrestleMania months can now go into motion.
05:32 While authors of pain are reportedly re-signed and ready to go, Nia Jax returned last Monday.
05:37 We can see John Cena on SmackDown again, and some movie star called Rock Johnson turned
05:43 up on Friday's episode.
05:45 The same day as his appearance on Pat McAfee's podcast Rock, the Dwayne Johnson made his
05:49 WWE return on SmackDown, where he instantly went way over time for his segment Classic
05:54 Rock - in what I'm now calling the Black Vest segment.
05:57 The Rock, wearing a black vest, hit a people's elbow on Austin Theory, who was wearing a
06:01 black vest, while Pat McAfee cheered on from inside the ring.
06:06 Also wearing a black vest.
06:07 And it turns out, black vests are a draw, as Sean Ross Sapp has added up all the views
06:12 The Rock's return has had on WWE's social channels, and it hit over 100 million in a
06:19 day.
06:20 That's inflation for you, though.
06:21 I remember the days when it just used to be the millions and millions of Rock fans.
06:25 Of course though, it is best to wait a few days to confirm that number.
06:28 NO DON'T GET ANOTHER TATTOO, WILL O'SPRAY!
06:30 The Rock himself has now reacted to the segment on his Twitter, calling it one of the top
06:34 5 loudest crowd reactions of his career, and thanking everyone who joined us to go ALL
06:41 IN.
06:42 Rock to AEW next August confirmed?
06:50 Apparently the working idea is for the Dwayne to face Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 40, after
06:55 the supposed 'locked in' plans didn't happen for 39 in Hollywood.
06:59 This all could depend on the writer's strike, though, as Rock is likely appearing for WWE
07:03 right now because his movie projects are currently halted.
07:06 Which is also probably the same reason John Cena has also started showing up on WWE TV.
07:11 And according to F4WOnline, he'll even appear on a show that was previously thought to be
07:16 off-limits.
07:17 Saudi Arabia are announcing Cena for the 4th November Premium Live event there.
07:21 Meltzer writes that it's no longer an issue that could have negative effects on his career
07:26 since everyone is back doing business with the country now, and that there is basically
07:29 nobody left on the WWE roster as far as they know that is either refusing to go or banned
07:35 from going.
07:36 The stars are literally aligning for WWE, as Roman Reigns will also reportedly be at
07:41 the Crown Jewel show, and he's now being advertised for the October 27th episode of
07:45 SmackDown in Milwaukee just over a week before.
07:48 There are also reports of WWE's next big international event, with the West Australian
07:52 Sunday Times reporting a massive stadium show in early 2024 on the road to WrestleMania
07:58 in the Optus Stadium in Perth, which has a capacity of 70,000 people.
08:03 We've got a full review of AEW Collision over on the WrestleTalk Podcast channel today,
08:07 but for now, here's my recap of the episode in one minute.
08:12 In one take.
08:13 Not 22 this time.
08:14 3, 2, 1, go.
08:15 Big Bill and Ricky Starks beat Bryan Danielson and Claudio Castagnoli, where Starks managed
08:20 to do his pose while Claudio was swinging him.
08:23 Ricky low blowed Danielson to get the win, setting up another match between them.
08:26 Hangman and The Bucks set up an ROH six man title match for the Grand Slam Rampage special.
08:31 There are too many belts.
08:33 Miro is angry with God for tempting him with his hot and flexible wife.
08:37 FTR beat the Iron Savages, Ozzy opened, got an enhancement win later, and called out FTR
08:44 for a tag title match at WrestleDream, which is exactly one year from their fantastic New
08:49 Japan match.
08:51 Someone left in the producer saying 'take 22' for a Keith Lee promo.
08:54 22 takes!
08:56 What is this, a David Fincher movie?
08:58 John Silver beat Anthony Bowens thanks to Evil Uno interference, setting up a trios
09:02 title program there.
09:03 Eddie Kingston got a great promo on Claudio.
09:05 Andrade beat Scorpio Sky, J White continued his feud with Andrade after, and The Righteous
09:10 were really impressive in their AEW debut beating the Hardys in the main event.
09:15 So I'm actually off to Japan in exactly 14 hours from right now for a few weeks.
09:33 Yes, I have booked tickets to a wrestling show.
09:36 And yes, it is DDT.
09:38 I can't wait.
09:39 I'll see you all soon.
09:40 Now go watch 10 WWE stars who should dethrone Gunther.
09:43 Thanks for watching.
