00:00 [MUSIC PLAYING]
00:02 Hi, I'm Michael Jeffries, and we're
00:21 at the Desert Hot Springs Spa in beautiful Palm Springs.
00:25 As a professional magician for the past 16 years,
00:27 I've seen firsthand the powerful effect
00:30 that magic can have on the opposite sex.
00:32 On this video, you'll see as we took
00:35 a group of non-magicians, people who have never done magic before,
00:39 taught them the tricks, and then brought them
00:41 to a nightclub, Zelda's Beach Club in Palm Springs,
00:45 and let them loose.
00:46 So let's watch now and see as they flirt with magic.
00:50 [MUSIC PLAYING]
00:53 [MUSIC PLAYING]
00:57 Hi.
01:03 Hi.
01:04 Need a light?
01:05 Sure.
01:06 Thanks.
01:12 You're welcome.
01:13 I couldn't help but noticing those eyes, those lips,
01:19 that cigarette.
01:21 Sorry.
01:22 Watch the cigarette.
01:24 All I need you to do is blow on the cigarette
01:26 when I count to three.
01:27 Watch.
01:28 One, two, three, blow.
01:30 Look, gone.
01:31 Oh my god.
01:34 So what else can you make disappear?
01:35 Well, I'm waiting.
01:41 Good evening, ladies.
01:47 Welcome to Zelda's.
01:48 [MUSIC PLAYING]
01:52 Thank you.
01:54 How you doing?
01:55 Oh, wow.
01:56 Check this out.
01:57 Whoa.
01:57 Watch this.
01:58 I don't know.
02:04 I don't know, guy.
02:05 It worked before.
02:06 [MUSIC PLAYING]
02:10 Hi.
02:16 Well, here we are in beautiful, windy Palm Springs
02:19 with Shirley and Lori.
02:22 And we're ready to learn the first magic trick on the video,
02:25 the one you saw me do in the nightclub, hot match.
02:28 To do hot match, you'll need a couple of props.
02:31 You'll need some matches, scissors, a safety pin,
02:38 and a rubber band.
02:40 Cut off the striker from the box of matches,
02:44 but hang on to the matches because you'll need them.
02:46 What you'll do is you'll take one of the matches,
02:50 place it inside the striker, fold the piece of striker
02:55 over the match like this, take the safety pin, open it up,
03:02 place it inside the striker like this underneath,
03:05 and then close the safety pin.
03:08 Now, this brings up a good point.
03:09 If I were to do it this way, I wouldn't
03:11 be able to safety pin it inside the coat.
03:13 So you want to make sure to turn it around and have
03:15 the safety pin part up.
03:18 Once you have it like that, close the safety pin,
03:20 take the rubber band, and wrap it around the match.
03:24 And what you really have there is a portable lighter.
03:27 And this, of course, goes inside your coat.
03:30 And let me show you what I'm talking about.
03:32 Meredith?
03:35 Meredith is here, and as you can see, she is fully prepared.
03:40 There's her match.
03:41 Her striker's all set.
03:43 She was in action.
03:44 She would just pull down on the match,
03:46 and it would, of course, light.
03:48 If it didn't light for some reason,
03:50 Meredith here, being a Girl Scout,
03:52 is fully prepared for just such an emergency.
03:56 And that's always a good idea to have extras.
03:58 Thank you, Meredith.
04:00 And that is Hot Match.
04:02 [MUSIC PLAYING]
04:05 All right.
04:11 It's time to learn trick number two, vanishing cigarette trick.
04:15 To do this trick, you'll need a pen, a safety
04:19 pin, and a piece of elastic.
04:22 The first thing to do is cut the elastic
04:24 so it's approximately 12 inches.
04:28 Then the next thing is to take the safety pin,
04:32 attach it to the end, and tie a knot.
04:34 Take the other end of the elastic,
04:36 feed it through the pen cap.
04:38 Now what you'll need to do is take-- I used an ice pick.
04:41 Poked a hole in the pen cap, then fed the elastic through,
04:45 and then tied a knot.
04:46 You'll also notice that the pen cap is broken off there.
04:50 The little thing that you clip to your pocket,
04:52 you won't need it for this trick.
04:53 You also won't need the pen.
04:54 So you can place that somewhere, Shirley.
04:58 I'll take the cigarette.
04:59 Now, this gets safety pin inside your jacket.
05:03 So, Laurie, you've got the jacket there.
05:07 Shirley, safety pin it right if there's
05:11 a little tag with the price-- not the price-- the size
05:16 on the back right there.
05:18 That safety pin there.
05:19 Now, when the cigarette vanishes,
05:22 it's going to go up your sleeve.
05:23 And it'll end up right here, hanging from your coat.
05:29 So put the coat on.
05:31 But as you do so, take-- I'm right handed,
05:34 so I'll be placing the cigarette inside the cap of the pen
05:37 with my right hand.
05:38 So I grab the cap with my left hand,
05:40 and I put my coat on, feeding the pen cap into my left fist.
05:48 And I hide it with my fingers.
05:49 Now, you don't want to have anybody standing to your right,
05:52 because they'll get a glimpse of the elastic against your wrist.
05:55 So if I was going to do this trick, I would do it to Laurie.
05:59 And what I would do is I would take the cigarette from her,
06:03 as I did in the bar, place it inside my fist.
06:06 Now, what she doesn't know-- and I'll pull this up
06:08 so you can see it-- I'm really feeding the cigarette,
06:10 lit end first, into the pen cap.
06:13 Once that gets in, if I push just a little farther,
06:15 it becomes locked in place.
06:17 That's not going anywhere.
06:18 That's how you want it.
06:19 The lack of oxygen inside the pen cap
06:22 will, of course, extinguish the lit cigarette.
06:25 So to make it vanish, what I do, I
06:27 release my grip on the cigarette.
06:30 And of course, that'll cause it to shoot up my sleeve.
06:32 Except if I do it just like this, I have no cover.
06:35 So there's where some flirting comes in.
06:37 That's where I want to make a cute remark,
06:39 ask her to gently blow on the cigarette.
06:41 As I do that, I place my other hand
06:44 over the cigarette for cover.
06:45 I let go, you blow.
06:46 And I can even now pull my sleeve back
06:49 to show that nothing's there.
06:50 I open my hand, the cigarette's gone.
06:53 And she, of course, is amazed.
06:55 And that's the vanishing cigarette trick.
06:57 [MUSIC PLAYING]
07:00 [BELL RINGING]
07:04 Excuse me.
07:07 I was wondering if you happened to have lost this pen.
07:09 No, it's not mine.
07:10 Are you sure?
07:11 But thanks.
07:11 This pen right here?
07:12 No.
07:14 Wow.
07:15 How did you do that?
07:17 Magicians usually don't reveal their secrets.
07:19 Is there something I could do to make you reveal it?
07:22 Well, maybe.
07:22 How about meeting me back here at 11 o'clock for a drink or so?
07:25 No, no.
07:27 How do I know you're not some sort of a weirdo?
07:30 I'm not a weirdo.
07:32 Maybe.
07:33 11 o'clock.
07:34 Come on, right here.
07:36 All right.
07:38 See you there.
07:39 All right.
07:40 (upbeat music)
