00:00 Recently the company Unity, makers of the video game engine of the same name, announced
00:04 an increase in price for video game companies to use their platform.
00:08 Now after the controversial decision prompted a town hall to discuss that shift, it has
00:12 now been cancelled and their offices shuttered after they received death threats.
00:17 For the uninitiated, the Unity game engine is a set of digital tools that allows other
00:21 game companies to produce games without starting from the ground up.
00:25 Unity recently announced they would now take a 20 cent commission from every game sold
00:29 that was built using their toolset, beginning January 1st, 2024.
00:33 They have since clarified that there will be sales and revenue thresholds that will
00:36 have to be met before the price increase kicks in.
00:39 Still, the blowback from the initial announcement was substantial, with developers worried about
00:43 their own sustainability and gamers worried about losing out on great experiences because
00:48 of that.
00:49 And soon after the announcement, Bloomberg has now reported, the company began to receive
00:53 a litany of death threats.
00:54 According to Bloomberg's report, Unity was made aware of a potential threat to some of
00:58 their offices and has taken immediate and proactive measures to ensure the safety of
01:02 their employees.
01:03 They closed both of the offices that were threatened, one in San Francisco and the other
01:08 in Austin, Texas.
01:09 Both offices will remain closed for the remainder of the week.
