00:00 Is Sulu gay? The answer is respectfully that nobody really cared. Jon Cho plays
00:04 Sulu in the rebooted Star Trek franchise. The upcoming film, Star Trek Beyond, will
00:09 reveal that the character is gay. Gross. Put that in there. Sulu will be seen in the film
00:15 with a male spouse raising their infant child. It was apparently the idea of
00:18 Star Trek Beyond actor Simon Pegg, who also co-wrote the film. It was intended
00:22 to be a nod to George Takei, who played the character for 25 years and came out
00:26 in 2005. But Takei himself is apparently not pleased. He told The Hollywood
00:30 Reporter, "I'm delighted that there's a gay character. Unfortunately, it's a
00:34 twisting of Gene's creation to which he put in so much thought. I think it's
00:37 really unfortunate." Takei first heard about the decision from Jon Cho and then
00:41 later in a letter from director Justin Lin. He informed both that he was
00:45 disappointed in the decision. Takei also asserted that he would love to appear in
00:49 an upcoming Star Trek show or a movie. Leonard Nimoy made two cameo appearances
00:53 in Star Trek films. "There's no reason why an ancient, wise, Admiral Sulu can't
00:58 appear. Or maybe an alien creature who sounds like me. That should be fun." Simon
01:02 Pegg remains firm in his decision. He said, "I have huge love and respect for
01:06 George Takei. His heart, courage, and humor are an inspiration. However, with regards
01:11 to his thoughts on our Sulu, I must respectfully disagree with him." Let's
01:14 read some comments. Josh Kretz said, "If you have a problem with Sulu being gay,
01:18 you're a fake Star Trek fan who never understood what that show was about."
01:22 Eric Landwehr said, "And this isn't the first canon on-screen LGBTQ character in
01:27 Star Trek. Dax from DS9 is trans, essentially. Male and female body." For
