00:00 Welcome to the WrestleTalk News, I'm Pete Quinnell.
00:08 If you'd have seen yesterday's WrestleTalk News episode, or seen this week's episode
00:11 of NXT, you'll know that this week's episode went off the air with a pretty crazy angle,
00:16 where Brom Breaker I think murdered Von Wagner.
00:21 As he went to crush his head with the stairs, the camera cut to black, leading to a worked
00:26 shoot kind of angle.
00:27 But as it turns out, the "worked" part of that might have been a little less work
00:31 than they were hoping for.
00:33 Sources reportedly told Bodyslam.net that while the cut to black injury angle was always
00:37 the plan on NXT, Breaker actually made more contact with Wagner's head than originally
00:43 intended.
00:44 Wagner was "busted open" and there were those backstage who were reportedly exceptionally
00:48 worried about him.
00:50 However, the site could not confirm what his status is, or whether the injury is more severe
00:55 than being cut open or not.
00:57 Needless to say, if something did go wrong and Wagner was injured from this spot, then
01:01 we'd like to wish him well in his recovery.
01:03 Meanwhile in WWE, it's almost time for their Superstar Spectacle show in India, which seems
01:08 to be a big part of the reason why John Cena's back on our screens for a while.
01:12 While they clearly had some big plans for the show featuring some top names, there's
01:16 one that'll be missing out.
01:18 Becky Lynch posted on X that she wouldn't be able to perform at the show anymore because
01:23 "there was a tiny tear in her passport" so she wasn't able to board her flight with
01:28 her tagging Qatar Airlines.
01:30 While to some this could have come across as a worked reason to cover up something else
01:34 happening, House of Wrestling confirmed with a WWE rep that this is actually what happened,
01:39 and Lynch was unable to board her flight to India.
01:42 Now it's been a couple of minutes in this news video today, and we haven't mentioned
01:46 CM Punk yet.
01:48 Should probably change that.
01:49 On AEW Collision last week, Tony Khan announced on the show that CM Punk had been fired.
01:55 The news of course had broken on social media prior to the show, but a confirmation of it
01:59 came on Collision.
02:00 It seems there might have been a few people hoping to see old Pepsi Phil show up on the
02:04 show though, as according to Brandon Thurston of WrestleNomics, 89,000 people turned off
02:10 the show after TK's announcement to open the broadcast, which meant that the viewership
02:14 dropped from 472,000 to 383,000, which is not a good rating for Collision at all.
02:22 There were of course some other factors at play here, including WWE's payback and college
02:26 football, but still, not a good rating.
02:28 It'll be curious to see how Dynamite and Collision fare going forward, if we can see
02:32 empirical evidence as to how much of a draw CM Punk is, or whether AEW in the eyes of
02:38 the larger audience are going to be just fine without him.
02:41 Now it's time for my review of the first post-CM Punk AEW Dynamite since his firing.
02:47 It's not like he was ever really on it anyway, he was on Collision in about 5 minutes.
02:52 All Out closed on Orange Cassidy, receiving a stand-in ovation for the end of his epic
02:57 International Championship reign.
02:58 So fittingly, he opened this episode of Dynamite, just like he's done with great matches for
03:03 so many weeks this year, with an in-ring promo.
03:06 The medical team told him to stay home.
03:08 He said, 'championship or no championship, he'll be here.
03:13 Every week.
03:14 Because he's freshly squeezed Orange Cassidy.
03:17 And he does not have a catchphrase.'
03:19 That's it, that's his whole promo.
03:21 That was literally almost verbatim.
03:23 With wrestling shows every week having 20 minute long in-ring promo segments, this was
03:27 just another example of Cassidy standing out because he goes against the grave.
03:32 But it's also far more in line with best practice for character exposition.
03:35 Show, don't tell.
03:37 And from just a few lines, you get that Cassidy is laid back, sure.
03:41 But he's driven by an internal duty, a work ethic, that challenges anyone else in the
03:45 company.
03:46 Awesomely, Jon Moxley - the man who beat him several days prior for his title - made his
03:50 entrance as Cassidy was leaving up the ramp.
03:52 AEW had a great dual shot to show Cassidy just standing there on the entranceway, listening
03:57 to Mox's music, letting you project whatever emotions you're feeling on OC's deadpan
04:02 Buster Keaton face.
04:03 If Buster Keaton wore sunglasses.
04:06 Mox was out for a quick title defence against AR Fox.
04:08 I thought Mox might squash him here, given his new title win and Fox's reported backstage
04:12 heat, but they went back and forth for over 5 minutes.
04:15 Darby Allin helped Fox in the ring following his defeat, but that left someone with a sadly
04:19 past father all alone backstage.
04:21 Christian Cage offered to mentor Nick Wayne backstage, which both played into Christian's
04:25 feud with Darby over Luchasaurus' TNT title, but also the Grand Slam tournament main event,
04:31 where Darby was taking on Wayne to advance, sowing potential seeds of dissent.
04:35 And that was the real crowning achievement of this whole episode.
04:38 It felt like an actual coherent TV show on HBO, with characters and segments and stories
04:44 all overlapping seamlessly.
04:45 I guess it might've been hard to do that before, when you had to split the roster because
04:49 of personnel issues.
04:50 But now those are gone, everything sang from the same hymn sheet beautifully.
04:55 Emi Sakura answered Chris Statlander's open TBS title challenge.
04:58 There was no Freddie Mercury babyface gimmick here, though, with Stat beating Sakura in
05:02 a hard hitting match, in what might've been match of the night, Les X Gods beat Ozzy
05:06 Open.
05:07 Chris Jericho and Sammy Guevara were super over as a babyface act, the crowd going mad
05:11 for their double delayed suplex.
05:12 It's like Jericho saw better than you, baby, and thought…
05:16 I'm just going to do that too.
05:19 Unfortunately, they weren't able to co-exist.
05:21 Jericho accidentally hit Sammy twice, so even when Chris got the win off a Judas Effect,
05:27 it's Judas Effective following a series of great mere fools, Guevara stormed off through
05:31 the crowd.
05:32 It was a great match, but I'm still not into the Jericho/Sammy stuff.
05:34 Don Callis was on commentary, so perhaps Guevara might eventually join him.
05:38 Ozzy Open, by the way, what awesome.
05:40 Speaking of Don, he and Takeshita will reveal who their next target is next week via painting.
05:46 Ricky Starks got an incredibly fiery promo on Bryan Danielson saying he never tapped
05:50 out.
05:51 And then came one of the two promo segments of the night.
05:54 Samoa Joe interrupted MJF in the ring to go back and forth on the mic.
05:58 They started with hurtful ribbing, Max making fun of Joe's weight and penis size, Joe
06:02 calling Max a bitch and… also making fun of his penis size.
06:07 But the exchange kept coming back to Joe's provoking question.
06:10 What's the problem, kid?
06:13 It finally broke Max into telling the story about when he was a kid.
06:16 19 years old, to be precise, where he got a tryout at WWE.
06:20 Q William Regal and NXT name drops.
06:22 And how he got the opportunity to accompany Joe down to the ring.
06:26 But Joe shoved him into a wall.
06:28 Joe promised to win the Grand Slam tournament, giving at least two legit potential winners
06:32 with both him and Roderick Strong currently in MJF feuds, and then attacked Max anyway.
06:37 He was about to hit the Muscle Buster on Max's injured neck, but Adam Cole made the save.
06:43 Everyone's performances in this were on point.
06:45 Joe as the bully heel.
06:47 OOOOH MAXWELL.
06:48 Cole's concern with the doctors, and Max's insecurity potentially getting the better
06:53 of him yet again.
06:54 While selling his neck so much, he was even doing it on the corner promo in the graphics.
07:00 AEW weaved the other part of this tapestry in right away, with Roddy coming down for
07:04 his tournament match, where his entrance music now seems to just be him screaming into the
07:08 microphone 'ADAM'.
07:10 He confronted Cole on the ramp, asking why he wasn't as concerned about his neck injury.
07:15 Probably because you're massively exaggerating it, Rod.
07:17 Strong removed his neck brace, wrestled a great TV match beating Trent Barretta, and
07:21 then put his neck brace back on at the end.
07:23 This was complemented by a somehow heelish video package earlier where Strong described
07:27 his very difficult family upbringing, while the Empire sycophantically sat behind him.
07:31 Tony Storm told Renee Paquette she couldn't remember interfering in Ruby Soho's All
07:34 Out match, which I could forget that finish too, and then debuted AEW's next big catchphrase,
07:40 which is going to confuse a lot of non-wrestling fans when guys start wearing them on t-shirts.
07:44 Chin up, tits out, and watch for the shoe.
07:47 Hangman Page was discussing American Education System funding to Tony Schiavone in the ring.
07:51 I love that's a babyface thing you can do on a wrestling show, when he was interrupted
07:55 by a brilliant promo from Swerve Strickland.
07:58 Swerve was utterly compelling here.
08:00 A broken man after spending two weeks in a coffin following All In, but it's only made
08:04 him more dangerous, more vicious.
08:06 And while he was in that coffin, he's been thinking about how Page has been given everything
08:11 by this company.
08:12 Oh, he did get his own show.
08:13 But he's now doing charity work.
08:15 He's barely wrestled singles matches.
08:17 He hasn't had new merch for a year.
08:19 He's coasting and letting the Elite do the driving.
08:22 If Swerve had had the same opportunities, he'd be the first black AEW World Champion
08:27 by now.
08:28 So he wants Hangman's spot.
08:30 Brian Cage then jumped Page to set up the third of their trilogy of matches next week,
08:34 where they were also the final two in the All Out Battle Royal.
08:37 AEW's booking feels very satisfyingly intricate and neat all of a sudden.
08:41 And the main event saw Darby vs Wayne, which had had multiple segments earlier on laying
08:45 the storyline foundations.
08:47 Darby is Wayne's mentor, and both were conflicted about hurting each other in the match, while
08:51 also both wanting to advance in the tournament.
08:54 Wayne was concerned when Darby bullet dived his face into the barricade.
08:57 Allen couldn't bring himself to hit a coffin drop.
08:59 Darby got on the mic at one point to fire Wayne up, telling him to hit him like he wanted
09:03 to win this thing.
09:04 But ultimately, the veteran unlocked the darker side of himself to advance, mean Wayne in
09:09 the head, until he submitted.
09:11 Allen will face Roddy next week, setting up injured neck vs injured back, all while Christian
09:16 lurked on commentary.
09:17 This was an incredibly solid episode, laying the foundations for the next three weeks in
09:21 a way I haven't felt in a long time.
09:23 This week's Dynamite is 84%!
09:53 Outro Where are you?
