Garth Brooks Explains Why He Keeps His Songs on the Radio When They Come On

00:07 This radio station, I know it sounds really, really corny,

00:10 but this radio station can unite us.

00:12 - When a Garth Brooks song comes on the radio,

00:14 do you turn it, like, do you sing along

00:16 or do you turn the station?

00:18 - Well, I know you're not asking me,

00:20 so Maria, when a Garth Brooks song-

00:22 (laughing)

00:23 - Maria, I hope you sing along.

00:24 - What do you mean?

00:25 You sing along, we turn it up. - No pressure.

00:27 - We jam.

00:29 - I just had a girlfriend, she was out thrift shopping,

00:32 and I need to send you a picture of it, Garth,

00:34 but she has like an old concert T-shirt and she got it.

00:37 And she was like, "Girl, the next time the songs come on,

00:39 like, we're going to have a concert at home."

00:41 So just know that I have a couple of friends

00:43 that are really excited to see you,

00:44 but it's a really cute shirt.

00:45 I'll text you.

00:46 - I stopped the concert in Atlanta

00:47 because the girl wearing the T-shirt,

00:49 the T-shirt was older than the girl wearing it.

00:52 And so I was like, "Okay, where'd you get it?"

00:53 And same kind of story.

00:55 - That's so funny.

00:57 That is so funny.

00:57 But you have to turn it up, right, Garth?

01:00 If you're someone- - No, you sing along.

01:02 Any artist that says, "I'm tired of hearing myself

01:05 on the radio," they're lying to you.

01:07 Trust me, it's always fun because immediately what happens

01:10 is you flash back to those faces in the crowd

01:12 that are singing it.

01:13 And you see the joy or what it means to them

01:15 if it's another song like a dance or something.

01:18 And all of a sudden, it's just that whole grateful thing.

01:20 Were you just lucky to be in this business?

01:22 But now lucky to be in this business this long

01:24 and at this level.

01:25 Thank you, God.

01:26 - Thanks to people, pretty cool.

01:28 So "Tune In" and "Tailgate" is the next step

01:30 for just getting the music to as many people we can

01:33 around the world.

01:33 It's up to them whether they accept it or not,

01:35 but it's our job to put it in front of them

01:37 and hopefully give them that hope

01:39 that we're all a lot more alike than we are different.

01:42 - Both of you are so successful in your own rights,

01:44 which I love that you've come together for this.

01:47 What makes both of you say yes now to something new

01:51 at this point in your career?

01:52 - Honestly, he sent an email,

01:54 maybe like right around COVID time.

01:56 Hold on, hold my earphones.

01:58 And I didn't believe it was Garth Brooks.

02:01 You know what I mean?

02:02 So I'm like, who is playing on my email?

02:06 And then Steve Levy, who I worked with at ESPN,

02:08 he was like, "Hey, have you gotten an email from Garth?

02:10 He's really trying to reach you."

02:11 And so I finally responded to it.

02:13 And it turned out that, you know,

02:14 Garth has an amazing foundation called Teammates for Kids.

02:17 So he's been working in communities for decades,

02:20 helping young kids just be involved,

02:22 usually through sport or working with different athletes.

02:24 And he had an idea to expand it

02:26 into helping young women as well.

02:28 And so at the time he was reaching out to me

02:30 to see like if we could work together to make that happen.

02:32 And COVID got in the way.

02:34 And so for two years,

02:34 we're literally trying to figure it out.

02:36 And last year was the first year

02:38 that our project initiated,

02:40 and it's called the Power Her Project.

02:42 And so we work with middle school age girls in Atlanta,

02:44 which is where I'm from.

02:46 And we kind of provide them opportunities and mentorship.

02:49 And it's like my favorite day of the month

02:51 every single month.

02:52 And so when Garth called,

02:54 like it's become one of those things where,

02:56 like I'm in love with him, he's met my mom.

02:58 You know what I mean?

02:58 Like at this point we're family.

03:00 Like I'm sitting at the kitchen table.

03:00 - Yeah, I'm so in front of him now.

03:02 - Yeah, so when he called

03:03 and had this idea about Tailgate Radio,

03:05 it kind of fused some of my favorite things,

03:07 which is I absolutely love music.

03:09 I love the idea of a Saturday,

03:10 sitting around with friends and Tailgate.

03:12 But I love what Garth's all about.

03:14 You know, I love who he is.

03:15 Like not just as an artist,

03:16 but as a person, the way that we met.

03:18 You know what I mean?

03:19 I don't believe in any project that he is starting

03:22 or being the force behind,

03:24 because you guys know I'm like,

03:26 it's gonna be successful.

03:27 So I know that that's why I'm here.

03:29 And that's kind of a little bit of the backstory,

03:30 but it's kind of just like another match made in heaven.

03:33 So thankful that we're able to do this together.

03:35 - Awesome.

03:36 That's great that you guys have such a

03:37 lifelong friendship now, it sounds like.

03:39 - Yeah.

03:40 - And Garth, what makes you say yes

03:43 at this point in your career to a new project?

03:45 When you definitely,

03:46 probably don't have to take on a new project,

03:48 but you are constantly working, which I love.

03:51 - I'll say this about Ms. Sherwood.

03:53 She and anybody makes a great duet.

03:55 Anybody and Maria Taylor is a match made in heaven.

03:57 So this is an easy thing for me.

04:00 But what I got to see was I got to see a relationship

04:02 with a company called TuneIn.

04:04 Now TuneIn has over a hundred countries around the world.

04:06 It's global radio stations, right?

04:08 Over 75 million users, and those are the seeds.

04:13 So what are we planning?

04:14 I know we're planting seeds.

04:15 What are we growing?

04:17 The world is more divided than it's ever been.

04:20 We need to grow love.

04:21 So you reach out to Maria and say,

04:23 hey look, you know, guy, girl, different backgrounds,

04:27 but we both hold hands and go in the future and say,

04:30 this is what hope is, this is what love is.

04:32 Let's love one another.

04:33 And it doesn't matter what country you're in.

04:35 Love is still love.

04:36 We've got our babies.

04:37 We want to protect them.

04:38 We want the future to be better for them.

04:40 This radio station, I know it sounds really, really corny,

04:44 but this radio station can unite us.

04:46 We can be at odds from the time the kickoff goes

04:49 to the time the end whistle blows,

04:51 but in the end of the time, we're all on the same team.

04:53 And I think that's what this station is promoting.
