Climate change: 'Children's rights in sub-Saharan Africa undermined', according to NGO report

At least 1.85 million children in sub-Saharan Africa were internally displaced by the end of 2022, according to humanitarian organisation Save the Children's latest report.

00:00 Climate change is a reality and affecting planet Earth in different ways.

00:06 Children in particular are suffering severely from natural disasters.

00:10 This is the warning by the non-governmental organisation Save the Children.

00:14 More than 2 million children in sub-Saharan Africa became internally displaced due to climate events in 2022.

00:21 Forced displacement nearly doubled from 1 million in 2021 to a record 1.85 million.

00:30 According to Save the Children's last report, thousands of children will never return home,

00:35 living much of their childhood in refugee camps with their families or in temporary locations.

00:41 Malama Mwila, one of the NGO's regional heads, is calling on world leaders to change this picture.

00:49 When it comes to actually implementing and providing these funds, there's been little action that has happened.

00:55 So the political commitment, especially from the global north, has been lacking.

01:01 We want to see more actions from these governments that have been, you know,

01:07 emitting historically and contributing largely to the climate crisis.

01:12 So that's where we want to see action, more action and less talk.

01:16 This week marks the start of Africa Climate Week, where policy makers, business and civil society

01:22 need to discuss climate solutions ahead of COP28, which will take place later this year in Dubai.

01:28 The starting point will be how to deal with the natural catastrophes that plagued Africa.

01:34 The continent has the youngest population on the planet and possesses the Congo Basin forests,

01:38 better known as the lungs of the world.

01:42 What we're bringing on board is not just to talk about the problems, but also to talk about the solutions

01:48 and the solutions in which Africa is already preferring and actually putting in place.

01:53 We're able to share those lessons with the entire world.

01:56 Climate change is a shared risk.

01:58 As we're speaking today, there are wildfires in Canada that are burning and destroying ecosystems in Canada.

02:05 There are floods in Europe, in some parts of Europe and in China.

02:09 Climate change is a shared risk, meaning that no one is immune and it doesn't respect territorial integrity.

02:15 It is affecting everyone, whether the people are in rich or poor countries.

02:21 Because of the fact that climate change is affecting everyone, it needs everyone to be on board with the solutions.
