00:03 Hong Kong was starting to feel the impact of Super Typhoon Saola
00:06 as winds reached Hurricane Force and rain lashed the city.
00:11 The government raised the number 9 storm signal, the second highest, at 6.20pm.
00:18 That's the first time in three years such a warning has been issued.
00:23 The Hong Kong Observatory said it will assess the need for issuing the hurricane signal number 10
00:29 depending on the local wind changes.
00:32 The city earlier closed the stock market along with schools
00:36 and granted most public transportation ahead of the storm's arrival later Friday.
00:42 The Observatory said Saola is forecast to be closest to Hong Kong around midnight,
00:47 skirting within 40km south of the territory,
00:51 warning that a storm surge will cause water levels to rise rapidly in low-lying coastal areas.
00:59 Local airport authorities said about 460 flights in total have been cancelled on Friday.
