Prince Harry Breaks Silence In 'Heart of Invictus' About Life In Military

Speaking in his Netflix series Heart of Invictus, Prince Harry opened up about how he experienced an ‘unraveling’ after returning home from his tour of duty in Afghanistan.

00:12 Speaking at his Netflix series Heart of Invictus, Prince Harry opened up about how he experienced

00:16 an unraveling after returning home from his tour of duty in Afghanistan.

00:21 The Duke of Sussex also noted that this situation triggered the trauma of losing his mother,

00:25 Princess Diana.

00:26 Everyone's going to struggle at some point.

00:27 I hear demons saying, "You're not going to do this."

00:31 If your goal was to make your family happy, you've achieved it.

00:37 The new series Heart of Invictus from Harry and Meghan follows service members from around

00:41 the globe "who have suffered life-changing injuries or illnesses as they prepare to compete

00:46 in the competition."

00:47 The couple's production company, Archwall Productions, announced the release back in

00:50 2021.

00:51 However, a lot of people are drawing their attention to some of the comments Harry made

00:54 in the series about his own trauma.

00:56 In the show, Harry states, "I can only speak for my personal experience.

01:01 My tour of Afghanistan in 2012 flying Apaches, somewhere after that there was an unraveling

01:06 and the trigger to me was actually returning from Afghanistan.

01:09 But the stuff that was coming up was from 1997, from the age of 12, losing my mom at

01:14 such a young age.

01:15 The trauma that I had, I was never really aware of.

01:18 It was never discussed."

01:19 Harry went on to mention that he really didn't talk about it and also "suppressed it like

01:24 most youngsters would have done."

01:25 Harry went on to mention that he did not know a lot of what to do or how to handle the feelings

01:29 later on in life and started to feel numb at times.

01:32 Harry mentioned, "I didn't have that support structure, that network, that expert advice

01:36 to identify what was actually going on with me.

01:39 Unfortunately, like most of us, the first time you really consider therapy is when you're

01:42 lying on the floor in the fetal position, probably wishing you had dealt with some of

01:46 this stuff previously, and that's what I really want to change."

01:49 Now, the prince served in the military for roughly 10 years and undertook a total of

01:53 two tours in Afghanistan.

01:55 Harry first served in Helmand Province in 2007 and 2008, but his tour was cut short

01:59 after one media outlet broke a news embargo and revealed his presence in the war zone.

02:04 He later returned for a second tour in 2012.

02:07 Harry mentioned that he was on board an air hospital in a plane where some of the most

02:10 indescribable sights took place.

02:13 He said he saw "only what people had talked about."

02:15 The Duke of Sussex stated in the series, "That was the real trigger, from now seeing the

02:20 real cost of the war.

02:21 Not just those individuals, but also their families and what they would mean and how

02:25 their lives would literally change forever."

02:26 Harry mentioned that the flight also helped him realize that he too needed help.

02:30 Harry has been open about his mental health over the years and wrote about more of his

02:33 experiences in his 2023 memoir, "Spare."
