Men's Final
Transcript
00:00:00 (upbeat music)
00:00:02 - Hello and welcome to the Pentathlon World Championship
00:00:17 2023.
00:00:19 Today is finals day here in one of the most historic cities
00:00:23 in England.
00:00:24 Bath is the venue for the season finale.
00:00:26 And if the women's final earlier on is anything to go by,
00:00:29 we'll have a very exciting 90 minutes
00:00:31 of competition awaiting us.
00:00:32 It's not just those impressive gold, silver,
00:00:34 and bronze medals up for grabs though,
00:00:36 but also the chance to book your place on the plane
00:00:38 to Paris 2024 with Olympic qualification.
00:00:42 Well, the weather here in Bath is as blustery
00:00:45 as it's been all week.
00:00:47 In fact, 18 degrees out there, but very overcast
00:00:50 and the chance of rain certainly threatening.
00:00:53 Well, over the last few days,
00:00:54 we've seen the qualifiers come and go.
00:00:56 And as recently as yesterday,
00:00:57 we witnessed the men's semifinals
00:00:58 where 36 athletes reduced to 18
00:01:01 and those hopefuls will make up today's final.
00:01:04 Two Italians and a British athlete made the podium
00:01:07 for the women earlier on with Elena Micheli
00:01:09 taking home the gold.
00:01:10 Alicia Sotero, the silver,
00:01:12 and Carenza Bryson in bronze place.
00:01:14 Remarkable performances throughout the field,
00:01:16 but particularly Sotero who started the final
00:01:18 in ninth place and with a 23 second deficit on Micheli
00:01:21 starting at the head of the pack.
00:01:23 Well, what will the men bring?
00:01:24 We'll soon find out.
00:01:26 It starts here with the riding element.
00:01:28 This a great representation of this location here in Bath.
00:01:32 The riding element, well, we'll see how the discipline
00:01:34 works out a little bit later on
00:01:35 when we go through all the different intricacies.
00:01:38 But as you see there, seven points off your score
00:01:40 for a knockdown, 10 for a refusal,
00:01:42 hoping to leave the arena with 300 points in the bag.
00:01:46 The athletes then move to the fencing bonus round,
00:01:48 two points per victory.
00:01:50 In every single bout, they take part in,
00:01:52 then they move away from the piste and head to the pool.
00:01:55 200 meter freestyle on a 25 meter pool.
00:01:59 That's what awaits the men here this afternoon here in Bath.
00:02:03 Then they head outside for the laser run.
00:02:05 Five laps of this 600 meter course
00:02:08 and four visits to the range.
00:02:10 When they get to the range, they must hit five targets.
00:02:13 They've got 50 seconds to do so.
00:02:15 If they don't do it in the 50 seconds,
00:02:17 they move on and can continue their lap.
00:02:20 So four visits to the range, off they go.
00:02:23 And at the very end of their five 600 meter laps,
00:02:26 that's three kilometers later on,
00:02:27 we'll have our gold, our silver, and our bronze medalists
00:02:31 and even perhaps some qualification
00:02:34 for the Olympics, as I say.
00:02:36 Now I'm your commentator, Brenn Lucas,
00:02:37 and joining me, I'm delighted to have
00:02:39 former pentathlete and expert summarizer, Mariam Amar.
00:02:42 It's great to have you here.
00:02:43 - It's great to be here.
00:02:44 I mean, women's final was exciting
00:02:48 and I can't wait for the men, to be honest.
00:02:49 And in just 19 minutes, we're gonna find out
00:02:53 who our new world champion is.
00:02:55 - We are indeed.
00:02:56 Lots and lots of British fans here in Bath,
00:02:58 overseeing all the action.
00:02:59 Here's what happened in the fencing ranking round
00:03:01 just the other day.
00:03:03 It was a couple of days ago for the men
00:03:05 and a very, very solid performance from Benz Demeter
00:03:08 with 23 victories for the Hungarian.
00:03:11 He had the best result of all, but not far behind him.
00:03:14 Well, there were a couple of others.
00:03:15 One there, there was Mahan Shaban and Joe Chung.
00:03:18 Also, Lin Bin Zhang from China with 22 victories.
00:03:22 Very, very impressive performances from the men
00:03:23 and very close coming out of the fencing ranking round.
00:03:26 - Yeah, we saw it yesterday.
00:03:27 Semi-finals were pretty close.
00:03:28 It came down to a second or two.
00:03:30 I'm missing out on the finals.
00:03:34 So yeah, today promises to be an exciting
00:03:37 and just nerve-wracking day altogether.
00:03:41 So I can tell you now, I'm on the edge of my seat
00:03:45 right after that women's final and I still have.
00:03:47 - Exciting and nerve-wracking,
00:03:50 I think is the best way of describing it.
00:03:52 We see that Benz Demeter, 240 points
00:03:54 from the ranking round the other day.
00:03:57 Down there in fourth place, equal to third
00:04:00 and also to fifth with Mahan Shaban.
00:04:01 It is Joe Chung, the Olympic champion
00:04:04 and the reigning world champion as well.
00:04:06 Valentin Belot from France is on 230 points.
00:04:09 You see down in 18th place, two athletes,
00:04:12 Georgia Malam and Martin Vlach, both on 200 points.
00:04:16 So it really is congested at the top.
00:04:19 Much more of a spread we saw with the women earlier on,
00:04:22 but it is the good base point for these athletes.
00:04:26 The ranking round from the other day carries through
00:04:28 to the semi-finals and to the final,
00:04:29 but we're about to get underway then
00:04:31 for the riding elements, Mariam.
00:04:33 - Yes, and the riding pretty much sets the tone
00:04:38 for the rest of the competition for these athletes.
00:04:41 If you do get eliminated, it's basically done for you
00:04:45 in terms of medals, but a good score here
00:04:48 will get you far in the competition.
00:04:49 And we have Georgia Malam,
00:04:51 the Italian in the field right now.
00:04:55 - We saw Michelle Gulyas earlier on for the women
00:04:57 be the only one of the athletes eliminated
00:04:59 and it really put paid to her entire event in the final.
00:05:03 - Georgia Malam with a knockdown there,
00:05:08 but otherwise it's looking like a clean ride so far
00:05:11 onto 5 A and B.
00:05:13 - She had 500 points to start with.
00:05:15 That is his points from the fencing ranking round
00:05:17 plus 300 points for this.
00:05:19 And we subtract the points for any knockdowns,
00:05:22 any refusals, and anything over the one minute,
00:05:26 four second time limit.
00:05:28 - So clean over eight.
00:05:31 Here we go, 9 A and B.
00:05:33 Gets a bit tricky for the athletes over A,
00:05:35 we saw with the women.
00:05:36 - Knockdown there on A, straight over B.
00:05:40 (crowd cheering)
00:05:43 And clears the final fence.
00:05:47 - Inside the time as well for Georgia Malam,
00:05:49 minus 14 there for those two knockdowns.
00:05:52 - 2.86 for Georgia Malam.
00:05:54 - Good start for him.
00:05:56 - I think really the problem with 9 A's is the turns again.
00:06:03 The horse, these horses all know how to jump,
00:06:05 so it's all about the rider and how he controls the horse
00:06:08 and how he steers the horse towards the fence.
00:06:11 You can see the Italian riding coach just watching him
00:06:16 do his course and he'll be okay with a 14 point penalty.
00:06:22 - Certainly what we saw earlier on he certainly will.
00:06:24 So here is the Czech Republic athlete, Martin Vlak.
00:06:28 Same number of points from the fencing ranking round,
00:06:32 200 for him.
00:06:33 Nicely over the first jump.
00:06:36 We didn't get all the athletes over that first jump
00:06:38 earlier on, so so far going strong.
00:06:40 Two down.
00:06:42 - Martin Vlak, one of the dangerous athletes
00:06:44 in the field today.
00:06:46 Strong laser runner, so the entire field's gonna watch
00:06:50 his back for sure.
00:06:52 Over three and over four, but just next four.
00:06:56 The hind legs there, but damage limitation now
00:07:01 for Martin Vlak if he does wanna get onto that podium.
00:07:05 - Yeah, five A, five B.
00:07:08 - Cleanly over six, onto seven and eight.
00:07:16 Broken line into eight.
00:07:18 Seen a couple of knockdowns there.
00:07:20 Yes.
00:07:22 - Clattered that one, didn't he, just there.
00:07:24 There he goes then, bringing the horse in line for nine.
00:07:30 A and B, here's nine A, and a knockdown there as well.
00:07:34 So I think that's three for him, minus 21 so far,
00:07:36 and he's gonna be over time as well,
00:07:38 so he's gonna lose even more points here.
00:07:40 There's another knockdown on 10.
00:07:41 This isn't a clean ride there at all for Martin Vlak,
00:07:43 and he loses 28 points plus the time added on as well.
00:07:48 32 points gone.
00:07:51 So not clean for Vlak.
00:07:54 He would have liked a much, much nicer ride there,
00:07:57 wouldn't he?
00:07:58 - Yeah, so leaving with two, six, eight isn't what
00:08:02 you'd hope for at this stage in the competition,
00:08:04 but--
00:08:05 - Especially when you started on the low end of the points.
00:08:08 You'd certainly want a nice 300 from here,
00:08:09 but he loses 32, as we say.
00:08:12 And next up, riding Roland.
00:08:15 Got some great names, these horses, by the way.
00:08:16 Roland is the horse we're looking at,
00:08:18 and on top of Roland is Roman Popov from the Ukraine.
00:08:22 Just a knockdown straight away for him.
00:08:31 - I was just gonna say, Roland was the horse
00:08:34 with the Polish athlete, Anna Malczewska,
00:08:36 and there you go, a refusal there,
00:08:38 so 10 points off his score.
00:08:40 - So he's 19 years of age, Roman Popov.
00:08:42 - The pace is too slow, but just barely makes it
00:08:47 over the fence onto three.
00:08:49 He really needs to get himself together,
00:08:53 and another refusal with a knockdown there,
00:08:57 so the time will stop, giving them time
00:09:00 to rebuild that fence, but he does need to move
00:09:03 if he doesn't wanna lose time as well.
00:09:06 This is getting costly for the Ukrainian.
00:09:09 - Certainly is that.
00:09:10 He needs to keep it together, doesn't he?
00:09:15 Damage limitations for sure for, oh, it's another refusal.
00:09:19 - It's done.
00:09:20 - Nice elimination for him.
00:09:22 We saw elimination earlier on for Michal Glias from Hungary,
00:09:26 the only athlete to be eliminated in the women's final,
00:09:30 and that really put pain to her.
00:09:32 Final, and you can see the disappointment
00:09:34 in the young Ukrainian's face as we look now
00:09:38 at our next athlete, Charles Brown from Great Britain.
00:09:41 He's on splash.
00:09:43 - Splash.
00:09:44 - Yep, that horse earlier on certainly made a splash,
00:09:47 and I can't even finish that sentence.
00:09:57 - Now just being reminded to stay quiet
00:10:00 during the riding aspect.
00:10:01 We're some way from the arena here.
00:10:03 We can see it through our screens.
00:10:05 - That horse does seem to go deep into the fences
00:10:09 and causing that clatter you see with the front legs there.
00:10:13 He was previously with Kim Sun Woo in the women's final.
00:10:17 Got a decent score of, I think a two,
00:10:21 what was it, let me make sure, was two seven nine,
00:10:25 so not too bad.
00:10:27 But let's see what Charles is able to bring
00:10:30 to the table today, five A and B, let's go.
00:10:33 - Great shot of the crowd behind as well.
00:10:34 Lots of spectators here in Bath,
00:10:37 the home of Penn GB, and it's a double knockdown
00:10:41 for him on that one, and another one.
00:10:43 There he goes.
00:10:46 - It's getting expensive for Charles Brown.
00:10:48 - Certainly is that.
00:10:49 There he goes.
00:10:52 Make it clean, oh, and another knockdown.
00:10:55 It's the front legs catching each time, isn't it?
00:10:58 - Yeah, as I said, I think this horse goes too deep
00:11:01 and maybe he just needs to nudge a bit on
00:11:04 the horse's mouth just to make sure that he is in check.
00:11:09 - That's over nine B, but not over nine A cleanly.
00:11:12 Minus 42 for Charles Brown, 463 at the moment,
00:11:16 well over time as well, look.
00:11:17 So he's gonna lose a decent haul of points.
00:11:19 Minus 50 for Charles Brown from his exploits
00:11:24 on the back of the horse.
00:11:25 He's down to 250 for his time there,
00:11:27 but not an elimination, so yeah,
00:11:30 it's obvious he's kept catching the front legs.
00:11:33 - Excuse me?
00:11:33 - He kept catching his front legs.
00:11:34 - Yeah, he goes too deep, which means he comes
00:11:37 really close to the fence before he does jump,
00:11:40 and that just increases the probability
00:11:43 of him hitting the fence.
00:11:44 - Is that a horse thing or a rider thing?
00:11:46 - Well, it's, okay, so I'd say the horse
00:11:49 does have a tendency to go in deep,
00:11:51 but if a rider just gives him that check
00:11:54 that I told you about with the, in his mouth,
00:11:58 he should be able to jump from far.
00:12:03 - Here is from Egypt, Ahmed El-Ghendi.
00:12:05 And he goes nicely over the first one there.
00:12:13 Looked at the others going on here.
00:12:15 The scores have been dropping off a fair bit
00:12:17 for the others, but he's cleanly over two
00:12:21 and rounds that bend.
00:12:22 That's the related jumps, his three.
00:12:25 Over he goes, has to get that line back on the horse,
00:12:31 and nicely over four as well.
00:12:34 Brings it round to the right-hand side.
00:12:36 You see 5A and 5B.
00:12:38 Very close together now.
00:12:42 Knocked down there on 5A.
00:12:48 Through six.
00:12:49 It's not looking bad for him at all
00:12:51 when you compare it to the others, Ahmed El-Ghendi.
00:12:54 Onto seven.
00:12:56 And that broken line onto eight.
00:12:58 Here he goes, oh, nicely over there.
00:13:00 Brings it round to this very tight left.
00:13:03 He's looking very assured at this moment,
00:13:08 is El-Ghendi.
00:13:09 9A, 9B, and he knocked down there on 9B
00:13:12 just at the one minute three mark,
00:13:14 so he's gonna go over the one minute four time.
00:13:16 That will have a slight impact, but over 10.
00:13:19 Let's see what that does.
00:13:21 Minus 18 for Ahmed El-Ghendi.
00:13:25 - Yeah, not the best of rides,
00:13:26 but when you put it in relation to all the other rides,
00:13:29 it's pretty much the average.
00:13:31 - One of the best, in fact.
00:13:33 One of the best so far.
00:13:35 The only one that's beaten him so far is Giorgio Malan
00:13:37 with that minus 14 with the two knockdowns
00:13:40 and coming home in time,
00:13:42 but he'll be relieved to get through this bit.
00:13:44 We've seen one elimination,
00:13:45 and you don't want that playing on your mind, do you?
00:13:47 Next up will be a decent round of applause
00:13:51 for our next athlete.
00:13:52 Good pat there from El-Ghendi.
00:13:54 Very, very happy with Jimmy's work.
00:13:56 Here is Charm, and riding Charm,
00:13:58 representing Great Britain, is Miles Pillage.
00:14:01 - So again, no exception to the British riders.
00:14:07 Pretty solid rider, Miles Pillage,
00:14:10 and we're looking for a good run from him today.
00:14:14 - No jinxing allowed.
00:14:17 - We've done too many commentators' curses earlier on.
00:14:20 There we go, nicely over three and four.
00:14:22 And he goes.
00:14:24 He's back to the crowd now.
00:14:27 It's double, and he's clattering down that first,
00:14:31 and that second part, 5A and 5B.
00:14:33 That's 14 points off for him.
00:14:36 - And the refusal onto six.
00:14:38 Yeah, kind of shorted the horse there
00:14:40 with the two knockdowns.
00:14:42 Made him unsure of that jump.
00:14:44 He's gonna go back in, reattempt, and he clears it.
00:14:47 - Really picks up the pace, doesn't he, Miles Pillage?
00:14:49 - Yeah.
00:14:50 It's about putting all these mistakes behind you
00:14:52 and focusing on the rest of the course
00:14:54 as not to get an elimination.
00:14:55 - The horse will feel reassured as well,
00:14:58 and they've got such a good rider in the saddle as well.
00:15:01 The horse will feel that way.
00:15:02 - Yeah, they do feel the tension
00:15:03 and the stress from the rider,
00:15:05 so as long as the rider is calm and just giving--
00:15:08 - That reassurance, isn't it?
00:15:11 - Yeah, reassurance, yeah.
00:15:12 - So it's gonna be over this one minute four
00:15:13 by some margin, but there you go, Miles Pillage crosses.
00:15:15 Minus 24 for the knockdowns, minus 32 in total for him.
00:15:20 Not amazing scores yet that we've seen
00:15:23 from any of these athletes, but Miles will be fairly happy.
00:15:28 I mean, he won't be all that happy with the minus 32,
00:15:30 but damage limitations to three knockdowns.
00:15:33 To four knockdowns, in fact, wasn't it?
00:15:37 And that was a refusal that really hampered him there.
00:15:40 - Yeah, the refusals are pretty costly.
00:15:43 - Certainly is.
00:15:44 But over he goes.
00:15:47 Start moving towards the mid-pack now.
00:15:50 Shababum from Hungary, number three in the world.
00:15:53 He's riding Harley.
00:15:54 He's been back to the barbers by the look of it, Harley.
00:15:59 And a knockdown on the first fence there.
00:16:02 - And one of the good runners in the field
00:16:06 and one to look out for for sure.
00:16:09 You don't want him behind you in that laser run.
00:16:14 Another knockdown for Shababum.
00:16:19 Onto 5 A.M.B., tight line, but seems to be okay.
00:16:28 - Clearly over here, so two knockdowns for him so far.
00:16:33 Minus 14, that's a pretty decent score so far today.
00:16:38 You can keep it all composed.
00:16:40 Oh, and a knockdown on eight.
00:16:43 What is it with the commentator's curse?
00:16:46 It's happened so many times today,
00:16:47 maybe we should just not say a thing.
00:16:50 - We'll leave you with the images of the day.
00:16:52 - Oh, and a bit of a stutter on the approach
00:16:54 and two knockdowns on 9 A.M. and 9 B.M.
00:16:57 Knocks him down the order somewhat, doesn't it?
00:16:59 Over we go for 10 and cleanly over there.
00:17:02 Shababum.
00:17:03 - Perfect on time, so just 35 points knocked off his score.
00:17:07 - Just the 35.
00:17:08 It won't be what he wants,
00:17:09 certainly where he started from.
00:17:11 Shababum wasn't in the position he'd like to begin with
00:17:13 after the fencing ranking round.
00:17:15 He had 18 victories, scoring 215 points.
00:17:18 He goes over here, adds himself 265 points to his haul.
00:17:24 We'll see what that means at the very end as well.
00:17:27 I like his beanie.
00:17:31 Harley looking super cool there.
00:17:36 Next up, Germany Marvin Dogg riding Oscar.
00:17:40 - Olivia Green rode Oscar in the previous round.
00:17:47 She actually didn't score that,
00:17:51 but it was a 279 from Olivia Green,
00:17:53 so looking for something within that range from Marvin.
00:17:58 - Marvin got through in the semifinal A.
00:18:00 He actually started that semifinal A in 10th place
00:18:03 and managed to creep the way up the order.
00:18:06 It's a little bit off the midline there,
00:18:10 but he seems to be doing fine thus far.
00:18:12 On to 5A and B.
00:18:14 This is where it gets tricky for some of the athletes.
00:18:17 - Colleen Lee over 5B,
00:18:20 oh, 5B catching on 5B.
00:18:22 - It's just a bit of a fast pace for the horse
00:18:25 to be able to see the fence well enough.
00:18:29 But here we go, 7 and 8.
00:18:32 A bit of a problem at 8 as well,
00:18:33 but yeah, he seems to clear it,
00:18:35 so good job from Marvin Dogg.
00:18:37 - So he's got the double to go, 9A and 9B.
00:18:39 Here it comes.
00:18:41 - Another tight turn into 9A and B, but clears them.
00:18:45 This is good from Marvin.
00:18:47 - Way inside the time as well.
00:18:48 Look at that, just seven points off for Marvin Dogg,
00:18:51 and the crowd giving him a response
00:18:53 that deserves seven points total off.
00:18:55 That is 293 points, adding on to his total,
00:18:59 the best we've seen by some margin today,
00:19:01 in fact, out there.
00:19:03 And Mariam, you look quite assured,
00:19:05 like you said, a bit quick, but quite assured.
00:19:07 - Yeah, here's the thing.
00:19:08 It's actually very nice to see,
00:19:10 even if the horse is maybe too fast,
00:19:14 maybe stumbling a bit,
00:19:16 it's nice to see the athlete calm and collected on the horse
00:19:18 'cause that does reassure the horse
00:19:21 as well as just gives you an insight
00:19:23 on just how experienced these athletes are.
00:19:26 - Here is another experienced athlete,
00:19:30 Emiliano Hernandez from Mexico riding Layla.
00:19:33 Hernandez made his senior debut back in 2015
00:19:35 in the Pan Am Cup, finishing 10th back then.
00:19:38 He was also the Pan Am Junior Champ back in 2017.
00:19:41 - It's over three, over four.
00:19:53 Seems to be looking good so far, Emiliano.
00:19:56 - 230 points, he comes into this
00:19:58 after his 21 victories in the fencing ranking round.
00:20:01 Clean the over so far.
00:20:05 Looking good, still looking good for him round here
00:20:09 as he approaches seven and eight.
00:20:11 Certainly don't wanna jinx anything right now.
00:20:15 There's seven.
00:20:16 Oh, and a bit crooked on the entry there for eight,
00:20:20 but manages to get across as he brings it round again
00:20:22 for this double.
00:20:26 Nine-eight, knock down there on nine-eight, just catching.
00:20:29 One more to go.
00:20:32 Nicely over and well inside the time,
00:20:36 so minus seven for Emiliano Hernandez,
00:20:40 gaining him 293 points in total.
00:20:43 - It looked like for a second there
00:20:45 that it was gonna be a perfect score,
00:20:46 but we've seen none of those today.
00:20:50 - Certainly have.
00:20:55 - We are in the top 10 athletes.
00:20:58 The athletes that will be battling it out later on today
00:21:05 for the medal positions.
00:21:07 - Speaking of medal positions,
00:21:10 next up we've got a very, very experienced athlete.
00:21:13 A lot of them in this field, of course, the 28-year-old.
00:21:15 There he is, sitting on the back of the horse right now.
00:21:18 That's Rupert, he's sitting on it.
00:21:20 That's Taejong from Korea.
00:21:22 - Bronze medals from Tokyo.
00:21:25 - Yeah, ranked number six in the world currently.
00:21:27 And again, knock down that first fence.
00:21:43 He's caught a few of them out today,
00:21:48 hasn't he, that first fence?
00:21:49 - Yeah, first fence, fifth fence, ninth fence, eighth fence.
00:21:54 It hasn't been easy in this course.
00:21:57 It's definitely tricky to manoeuvre.
00:22:00 - Confidence-wise, you'd wanna get through
00:22:02 the first two or three, wouldn't you,
00:22:03 without any knockdowns, though,
00:22:04 to knock the first one down over here.
00:22:06 - Absolutely.
00:22:07 - Something you have to overcome immediately
00:22:09 and stay relaxed and calm,
00:22:10 and that's what he's doing right now
00:22:11 as he approaches seven and eight.
00:22:13 And he knocks down a six, wasn't it?
00:22:22 Knock down on eight, just catching it with the front feet.
00:22:25 - So let's go for nine, A and B.
00:22:30 - Another knockdown, another knockdown for Wontae Jun.
00:22:36 This is not good at all.
00:22:38 I think he's gonna make it way inside the time, though.
00:22:39 Over he goes.
00:22:40 Minus 35, we are seeing some strange scores, aren't we?
00:22:46 265 points gain there for Wontae Jun.
00:22:49 - Looking on there, I think his coach,
00:22:51 kind of puzzled, I think,
00:22:54 as to what was going on just there.
00:22:56 I think that was a puzzled expression of a coach.
00:22:58 Just getting a little bit caught up, wasn't he,
00:23:04 front feet and the...
00:23:05 There's a couple of times he caught,
00:23:08 didn't he, on the front there.
00:23:09 Just clearing it on that one, as you say.
00:23:13 (laughs)
00:23:15 Yeah, that's not a pout of someone
00:23:17 who looks all that happy.
00:23:18 That's a disappointment.
00:23:20 - That's a disappointing pout.
00:23:23 Next up, then, from Korea, Jin Hwa Jung.
00:23:26 - Well, three Koreans are back-to-back,
00:23:27 so that coach is gonna be standing there for a while.
00:23:30 - He's ranked 100th in the world, the 34-year-old.
00:23:33 - Jin Hwa Jung.
00:23:35 - Knockout past the semis in 2023,
00:23:38 until this time out at the World Championship.
00:23:41 He chose a good time to do it, didn't he?
00:23:43 - Yeah, he's had a tough time this season,
00:23:45 but he seems to be turning it around right now.
00:23:49 I just don't wanna talk about the riding.
00:23:54 It's up to him.
00:23:54 - Which is tricky, as a summariser,
00:23:56 when it's with the riding.
00:23:57 Gonna force you to talk about it
00:23:58 as he clattered through 5A just there.
00:24:01 So he loses seven points off of his 300.
00:24:04 Another knockdown.
00:24:07 A little bit sideways in the saddle, too, as he landed,
00:24:10 but he got back on it, back.
00:24:13 Collecting his thoughts, round he goes
00:24:14 to 9A and 9B, 14 off his score so far.
00:24:18 286, if he can maintain this, he's way inside the time.
00:24:25 And he does.
00:24:27 286 points gained there for Jin Hwa Jung from Korea.
00:24:33 And the coach looks a bit happier that time round, no pout.
00:24:42 - He's putting less than the athlete in the saddle,
00:24:45 that's for sure, won't I, Jun earlier on.
00:24:47 - Yeah, relatively good ride.
00:24:49 Got present in the rest of the field.
00:24:51 And we have a third Korean making their way out as we speak.
00:24:56 - And there he is, riding Nikki.
00:25:00 This is Jihan Lee, ranked 52 in the world.
00:25:05 Currently a multiple junior team relay medalist,
00:25:08 made his senior debut at the end of 2016.
00:25:12 - Struggling a bit, getting the horse to his paces,
00:25:17 but seems to have done it now.
00:25:21 Over one, onto two, cleared that.
00:25:25 Going into three and four.
00:25:29 - Riding the only discipline of the five
00:25:34 where you start with points
00:25:35 and you try not to lose points.
00:25:40 - Yeah, as you're just trying to start
00:25:41 to build up your points.
00:25:42 Remember, every single point you gain
00:25:44 gives you an advantage, a second advantage
00:25:46 over those around you in the laser run.
00:25:48 - Oh, over six.
00:25:54 - Yeah, he's doing okay so far.
00:25:56 - Seven and coming up is tricky eight.
00:26:00 - It's a new name for it, tricky eight.
00:26:03 - Tricky eight.
00:26:04 - Here comes tricky nine, eh, tricky nine B.
00:26:07 - Here comes the tricky course.
00:26:09 - Certainly caught a few out here today in the final.
00:26:14 And he's over nine A and nine B, not many have done that.
00:26:16 - Yeah, clips it but doesn't fall off
00:26:18 and the last fence and a nice ride actually from Ji-Hun Lee.
00:26:23 Just the seven points off his score for the knockdown.
00:26:28 - 293 points for him, already in a pretty good position
00:26:31 since the seventh highest athlete from the ranking round.
00:26:34 So that'll be a decent point.
00:26:36 - Paul, he'll certainly be in contention come
00:26:39 the end to the pool after they've gone
00:26:42 to the fencing bonus round next up.
00:26:44 That's what awaits these athletes here.
00:26:46 I love the name of the next horse that's coming up.
00:26:53 I don't think we saw, don't think we saw this,
00:26:57 oh, we did see this horse earlier on
00:26:58 as Alexander Fraser rode it and it was Tonka.
00:27:01 Riding Tonka this time round is the Frenchman,
00:27:04 Laurentin Bellot.
00:27:05 (crowd cheering)
00:27:08 Bellot is ranked number 11th in the world,
00:27:10 came 11th in the Olympics in Tokyo.
00:27:11 - Went into it with a bit of an angle
00:27:16 but managed to get away with it.
00:27:19 - His last medal came in 2019 at the World Championships
00:27:21 where he won gold.
00:27:23 So he's done it before, he'd like to do it again.
00:27:26 It's been some weight, hasn't it, four years
00:27:29 if he manages to claim gold this time round.
00:27:31 But it's a big ask for the Frenchman.
00:27:33 - He is on a good horse indeed.
00:27:36 Seems to be careful of his jumps and careful not to,
00:27:39 just as I said that, a refusal from Valentin Bellot.
00:27:43 On six, so he will go around and reattempt it and clears it.
00:27:50 - That's reassuring, isn't it?
00:27:51 When you go back round again,
00:27:51 the horse does what you ask and goes over.
00:27:54 Oh, clattering through seven.
00:27:57 Just took down all three, I think there, so.
00:28:03 - On to nine A and B.
00:28:06 Bit of an angle as well but.
00:28:08 - He does clip it but it stays on.
00:28:10 Quick put some money on the lottery.
00:28:14 Lux in, there you go, over he goes.
00:28:16 - Four seconds.
00:28:18 - It's a minus 21 for the Frenchman, yeah.
00:28:22 - Two seven nine, not too bad.
00:28:23 - Yeah, not too bad, certainly damage limitations
00:28:25 after a refusal to only get that.
00:28:31 - After a refusal, you just wanna get straight back round,
00:28:34 straight over, get that confidence up again.
00:28:36 - Exactly, yes.
00:28:38 - Now we have an interesting story coming up
00:28:43 for the next athlete.
00:28:44 This is the horse we haven't seen before.
00:28:46 Huggs was out before and it was a swap out, wasn't it?
00:28:49 - Yeah.
00:28:50 - For Mohamed El Gendy from Egypt.
00:28:52 He swapped out to Motown, was picked.
00:28:53 The reason behind that?
00:28:54 - Is Michel Goullache got an elimination with their horse
00:28:58 so he has the right to object and switch out the horse
00:29:02 for another one.
00:29:03 So we haven't seen this horse on the course just yet.
00:29:06 Over one and two, off to three and four.
00:29:11 - You're saying that it'd be good for Mohamed
00:29:14 to get round here with a decent score, wouldn't it?
00:29:16 This is the part of his pentathlon
00:29:19 he'd be the most concerned about, I think.
00:29:21 But he's looking assured.
00:29:23 Knocked down just there.
00:29:25 - He needs to rebalance himself, Phil.
00:29:28 - And over six.
00:29:31 286 points coming his way at the moment.
00:29:37 Nicely over seven.
00:29:38 And nicely over eight there for him as well.
00:29:43 So going nicely as he brings the horse round
00:29:48 for 9A and 9B, this double.
00:29:50 - Just to pull his shoulders a bit back, rebalance it.
00:29:55 Not in the midline but he gets away with it.
00:29:57 One more fence.
00:29:59 - I know you're staying very, very quiet here.
00:30:00 The Egyptian athlete goes across a little bit over time
00:30:03 but not far at all.
00:30:05 Minus 17, so that gives him 283 points.
00:30:10 So nicely done there for Mohamed El Gendy.
00:30:14 He'll be good in the laser run aspect.
00:30:19 He was so good yesterday, wasn't he, in the semi-final?
00:30:21 - I think he's a very talented runner
00:30:23 and laser runner in general.
00:30:26 Given the position he's starting in now,
00:30:28 could be, again, for mental contention,
00:30:31 he was the silver last year in Alexandria
00:30:33 for the world champs as well.
00:30:34 So he's done it before, can do it again.
00:30:37 - Started fifth in the semi-final,
00:30:39 got himself across the line without any drama.
00:30:41 Any drama at all.
00:30:42 In fact, he led the way, didn't he, across the line.
00:30:43 Here's Lin Mingzhang from China.
00:30:45 Up next then, only four more to go and he's riding Jack.
00:30:49 Lin Mingzhang, the fact that he's fourth from the end
00:30:51 tells you he did very well in the ranking round
00:30:54 of 22 victories, 240 points scored.
00:30:59 - I don't know if this is intentional from Zhang.
00:31:03 His brain seemed to be a little bit loose,
00:31:08 but not bothering him so far.
00:31:10 Just a knock down there on four into 5 A and B,
00:31:14 the double obstacle.
00:31:16 Again, off center, but that's the problem though,
00:31:22 'cause in the doubles you do have to be
00:31:23 in the midline for both fences.
00:31:26 If you do get away with one fence not knocking down,
00:31:29 the second one will probably still knock down.
00:31:31 - Right.
00:31:32 Nicely over eight, currently on a 286.
00:31:37 See it puts him on 521 points at this moment
00:31:41 and sitting in sixth place, but a knock down on 9 A
00:31:45 and we've said that so many times today, haven't we?
00:31:47 9 A catching many out.
00:31:48 We saw an elimination, the knock down on 10.
00:31:54 Earlier on.
00:31:55 - 279 for Lin Minjiang, just the 21 points off his score,
00:32:01 three knock downs.
00:32:02 - Accumulating as many points as you can
00:32:05 in the first disciplines here.
00:32:07 Ranking round happened a couple of days ago for the men.
00:32:11 And it's the riding, then you've got the bonus round
00:32:13 where you can gain some points
00:32:14 that you may have lost in the riding back there.
00:32:18 Then you go to the pool, try and set a decent time,
00:32:20 but don't expel all your energy
00:32:21 because then you've got the laser run to come.
00:32:23 - We're getting to the business end of things now.
00:32:27 - I start to tense up here as well, I'll be used to it.
00:32:30 Zhou Cheng then, the Olympic champion,
00:32:31 the reigning world champion, number two in the world,
00:32:35 here on very much home soil.
00:32:37 He spent a lot of his recent life anyway in this area.
00:32:41 Attended Bath University.
00:32:42 But also here with PENGB.
00:32:46 So he's got very much familiar surroundings here
00:32:49 and also a lot of crowd supporting him.
00:32:51 A lot of people have come out to see this man.
00:32:54 Hasn't gone all his way this season, Zhou Cheng.
00:32:58 By his own standards,
00:33:01 it's not gone at all well for him this season.
00:33:03 - Yeah, not the season he would have hoped,
00:33:05 but he is the Olympic champion and the world champion,
00:33:09 so a lot going on for him.
00:33:11 He's basically won every medal there is to win.
00:33:14 - You say it's not gone all that well for him this season,
00:33:16 but it's all relative, you know.
00:33:19 - So very cleanly, this could be...
00:33:22 You know what, I'll just not speak until he's done,
00:33:25 but we're off to 9A and B.
00:33:28 - 9A clear, oh, knock down on 9A, I called it clear,
00:33:31 and then he clipped it with his back leg there.
00:33:33 And over Zhou goes with a 293.
00:33:38 Way inside the time, and you can hear
00:33:41 what that means, the crowd willing him on.
00:33:44 The eruption of noise, and Zhou Cheng went over the line
00:33:47 there, over that 10th jump, 293 points.
00:33:52 So certainly a good points haul for him.
00:33:54 - Yeah, it's amazing today, I think 293 is the new 300.
00:33:58 - Is the new 300, yeah, exactly,
00:34:00 we'll call it a new sport now.
00:34:02 Only knock down one and you get maximum points,
00:34:05 is what it'll have to be sorted out by.
00:34:07 But there was that knock down, that single knock down
00:34:09 there for Zhou Cheng, riding Miller.
00:34:12 - You can see Jovina be riding coach for Team GB.
00:34:16 - Always nice to see her.
00:34:17 - Mohamed Chaban out next for Egypt, our riding prince.
00:34:23 Very, very assured, easily through from semi-final A
00:34:29 yesterday, slightly longer to recover than those athletes
00:34:34 in semi-final B, but only a couple of hours.
00:34:37 Ranked number one in the world currently.
00:34:39 Knock down there for him.
00:34:46 - The difference we saw earlier today with Laura Heretia,
00:34:51 so let's take a look at her score, was it 265?
00:34:56 - Slightly awkward landing and oof, well.
00:35:01 - This is actually considered the knock down
00:35:03 for that refusal. - Yeah, it's not a refusal
00:35:05 'cause he went through it there,
00:35:05 so he manages to regain his composure,
00:35:09 not cleanly for Mohamed Chaban.
00:35:11 The horse landing straight down, in fact,
00:35:13 on top of the fence there.
00:35:15 So it's not the tidiest ride at all,
00:35:17 but he's only got a couple of fences to go.
00:35:19 Keep this together, Mohamed.
00:35:21 Minus 24 at this stage.
00:35:24 And another knock down over nine B.
00:35:27 - His stirrups fell off and look at that,
00:35:30 he's not even sitting on the stirrups,
00:35:32 but a nice recovery from Mohamed Chaban.
00:35:35 It's important that he's done, finished it.
00:35:37 - He could be relieved there with his feet out the stirrups,
00:35:39 as you say, just to kind of get through that one.
00:35:41 Very much damage limitations, 265 points scored
00:35:45 for the Egyptian world number one.
00:35:47 - Exactly like in round one with the women, 265.
00:35:51 Not an easy horse to maneuver,
00:35:53 but he did his best to recover
00:35:54 and it's important that he got through
00:35:57 to that 10th obstacle.
00:35:59 - Certainly so.
00:36:01 So Mohamed Chaban there will be very, very happy,
00:36:04 once he's managed to get through relatively unscathed.
00:36:08 Mohamed can now leave the arena like that
00:36:10 and get changed into his fencing garb,
00:36:12 ready for the fencing bonus round.
00:36:15 As here comes our final athlete
00:36:17 and it is the Hungarian, Bence Demeter,
00:36:19 leading the way, 23 victories
00:36:22 in the fencing ranking round yesterday.
00:36:24 He's on the back of Derwin.
00:36:26 He sounds like he should be Australian
00:36:29 with a name like that,
00:36:29 but knock down for Bence Demeter at the first fence.
00:36:34 The second fence as well,
00:36:36 coming in at a strange angle, wasn't it?
00:36:38 - Yeah.
00:36:40 That's why the turns do matter in these angles.
00:36:43 A few degrees off and you can, yeah,
00:36:45 just cloud out a fence just like that.
00:36:47 - Again, I think he's hit all of them so far, hasn't he?
00:36:50 - Yeah, this is getting pretty expensive for Bence.
00:36:53 It's 5 a.m. B now.
00:36:56 - Certainly showing, oh, there's four now on the graphic.
00:36:57 There's another one, another knock down, another knock down.
00:36:59 He's going for a clean sweep here, isn't he?
00:37:02 - This is...
00:37:03 - And he gets a bit of luck there on six.
00:37:07 Round he comes then.
00:37:09 - I'm sure the athletes further down would be,
00:37:11 this is closing up the competition.
00:37:14 - Oh my word, that's, he's only gone cleanly
00:37:16 over one fence so far.
00:37:19 And that was fence six.
00:37:20 So round he goes, he just wanted to get through this.
00:37:22 Only minus 56 off of his 300 from this riding element
00:37:26 over 9a and into 9b.
00:37:29 Just keep it together, Bence.
00:37:32 And over he goes on 10.
00:37:35 And I think it was just outside the time,
00:37:36 so there you go, minus 64 off of that 300 allocation
00:37:40 for him just there.
00:37:41 So 236 points coming his way.
00:37:46 476 for Bence Demeter.
00:37:48 And that was a, well, a disaster for him, really, wasn't it?
00:37:52 - Yeah, that was...
00:37:52 - Didn't get through many at all.
00:37:54 - That was pretty bad by his standards for sure.
00:37:57 And it's gonna close the gap right up,
00:38:00 change up the competition.
00:38:02 And to put things into perspective,
00:38:04 these athletes, again, have been competing
00:38:06 for four days now.
00:38:07 And just seeing your work gone in a minute
00:38:12 is hard to watch.
00:38:14 - Absolutely, and just see where he is now.
00:38:16 We'll keep an eye on that graphic.
00:38:17 Well, this is what the points are after the riding element.
00:38:20 Zhou Chung, 528 points there.
00:38:24 That's five seconds ahead of Lee Hernandez from Mexico.
00:38:28 518, 516 for Zhang there with 514.
00:38:32 Down to 503 for Manu Shaban, 523.
00:38:35 That's 25 seconds back from Zhou Chung
00:38:38 heading to the next element.
00:38:40 But look down here how Bence Demeter
00:38:42 has fallen down there to 15th because of that riding.
00:38:47 The 236 scored.
00:38:48 476 for him and Roman Popov.
00:38:51 Well, we saw one elimination earlier on, didn't we?
00:38:54 And that was curtains for Michel Goulash from Hungary.
00:38:58 Well, the Ukraine athlete there, Roman Popov,
00:39:01 he's got the same issue coming his way
00:39:04 with the elimination.
00:39:05 A shame for him, but he'll keep on going, I'm sure,
00:39:08 that Bence Demeter, where he's gotta go and lick his wounds
00:39:10 and get himself back ready to go
00:39:11 because the fencing bonus round will be up thick
00:39:14 and fast here in Bath.
00:39:17 Damage limitations for some of them.
00:39:19 But let's have a look, shall we,
00:39:21 back at the highlights from the fencing.
00:39:24 (gentle music)
00:39:31 (upbeat music)
00:39:33 (upbeat music)
00:39:36 (upbeat music)
00:39:39 (upbeat music)
00:39:41 (upbeat music)
00:39:44 (upbeat music)
00:40:06 (upbeat music)
00:40:09 Great shots there from the riding element.
00:40:20 I said fencing, I don't know why,
00:40:21 I got ahead of myself, didn't I?
00:40:22 Fencing bonus round is well and truly on its way.
00:40:25 So we move from this part of the stadium
00:40:28 for the riding element,
00:40:30 the short walk across to the fencing bonus round,
00:40:33 the piste just there.
00:40:34 We get two points for every single victory
00:40:38 in each of the bouts that you face.
00:40:41 So it goes in reverse order again,
00:40:43 so the lowest scorers from the fencing ranking round,
00:40:45 they'll start first, working their way up the order.
00:40:49 We've got another guest in here as well,
00:40:52 so Mariam's been off gathering up our guests
00:40:54 and delighted to have Uzbeta Adimitaiti from Lithuania.
00:40:59 Welcome along, great to have you here.
00:41:01 First of all, amazing work for you in the laser earlier on.
00:41:04 - Oh, hello, yeah.
00:41:06 Thank you so much, yeah.
00:41:07 I had the competition before,
00:41:09 the Laser Run World Championships,
00:41:12 and I won gold in the seniors,
00:41:13 so I'm very happy about it.
00:41:15 But the main, main, main star of the show
00:41:18 is the Modern Pentathlon World Championships.
00:41:20 - It certainly is, and it's nice for you
00:41:22 to have some gold draped around your neck
00:41:23 before you even get to the pentathlon.
00:41:25 How did it go for you then the last few days?
00:41:27 How do you sum it up?
00:41:29 - I mean, I was really, really fit in the laser run,
00:41:33 and I felt really good.
00:41:34 And coming into the main competition,
00:41:37 I felt a little sore, so I mean,
00:41:40 it was kind of hard to keep up and be fit
00:41:43 and feel very, like, fresh.
00:41:45 So for me in the qualifications,
00:41:48 I did pretty good and I felt tired.
00:41:51 And then in the semifinals,
00:41:54 I gave it my all and it was not enough.
00:41:56 So I mean, doing all of it is,
00:41:59 I think you need to come in
00:42:00 to the Modern Pentathlon World Champs just for that.
00:42:03 - So you think maybe next time around
00:42:04 you won't run the laser run before
00:42:06 and the Laser Run World Championship,
00:42:07 you'll just sit back and watch that, will you?
00:42:09 - Oh yeah, surely.
00:42:10 (laughing)
00:42:11 - No defending champion coming back in 2024.
00:42:14 There you go, news hot off the press.
00:42:16 So Mariam, you were here watching
00:42:18 Elzbeta's amazing action, shall we say,
00:42:20 over the last few days.
00:42:21 It was a shame she didn't make it through,
00:42:22 but it's such a tough competition, isn't it?
00:42:25 - Yeah, it is.
00:42:26 I mean, this is the crème de la crème of athletes here today
00:42:29 and she is one of them.
00:42:30 I just think, as she said,
00:42:32 yeah, the laser run just took a lot out of her.
00:42:36 But she is one of the best runners in the field.
00:42:38 And yeah, she got cold in the laser run,
00:42:40 so that speaks for itself.
00:42:42 - Absolutely right.
00:42:43 Talk about Lithuanian Pentathlon then.
00:42:45 Where is it currently sitting?
00:42:46 - Oh, like Lithuanian Pentathlon is top of the top.
00:42:49 I mean, we have Laura, we have Gintar, we have Jeva,
00:42:52 and then me, the fourth girl.
00:42:54 So we have a big team and our team is really strong.
00:42:57 I think one of the strongest teams
00:42:59 in Pentathlon at the moment.
00:43:01 So I'm really happy to have them next to me
00:43:04 and have them as my role models and trying to catch up.
00:43:07 And Laura is showing her sportsmanship as always.
00:43:11 Never, never last.
00:43:12 Always winning.
00:43:13 And this season for her is pretty tough
00:43:16 because she came in and won fourth all the time,
00:43:20 all the competitions.
00:43:21 But she is still the star.
00:43:23 - Well, thank you so much for joining us.
00:43:25 An absolute pleasure there.
00:43:26 Great to hear the thoughts from Elisabetta.
00:43:28 And we wish you all the best for the off-season
00:43:30 and hopefully see you back here next year.
00:43:33 Great stuff there.
00:43:33 And we're ready for the first bout
00:43:35 of this men's final with the fencing.
00:43:38 And it is Georgia Malan from Italy
00:43:42 up against Martin Vlak from the Czech Republic
00:43:45 on the right-hand side of your screen.
00:43:46 Great to hear her thoughts, wasn't it?
00:43:49 - And oof, Malan is going for it.
00:43:51 He gets the touch.
00:43:52 How quick was that?
00:43:54 Four seconds in.
00:43:56 - Wants to get on with it.
00:43:56 He was like, "Come on, get it done."
00:43:58 He wants to start building some more points
00:43:59 and he does, doesn't he?
00:44:01 With Malan going through.
00:44:03 He had two knockdowns in the riding element.
00:44:08 So that's already a good start
00:44:09 when you compare the others around him.
00:44:11 - So good stuff there from Malan.
00:44:15 - Well, he'll be pleased to get some points on the board.
00:44:20 A man who does need some points is here,
00:44:21 and that is Roman Popov.
00:44:22 The elimination for him in the riding
00:44:24 has pretty much put him out of the competition.
00:44:26 Well, that's no big surprise if you have an elimination.
00:44:29 Unless all the others get eliminated,
00:44:31 you are way down the order
00:44:32 and you're gonna start so far back.
00:44:34 But here is Roman Popov just trying to do something
00:44:37 for his confidence.
00:44:38 Left-handed.
00:44:39 Very aggressive again from Giorgio Malan.
00:44:42 Very quick on his feet, isn't he?
00:44:44 - Yeah, he seems to be going for it.
00:44:45 He is the European champion.
00:44:47 Didn't quite seem to have the best of luck
00:44:49 in this competition,
00:44:50 but is turning things around with this bonus round so far.
00:44:54 Quick first win and looking for a second.
00:44:56 - Straighten his sword out there.
00:45:00 (sword clinks)
00:45:02 There you go.
00:45:03 Still 20 seconds to go.
00:45:04 Priority would go to Roman Popov,
00:45:06 but he doesn't need priority to get this one.
00:45:09 As he takes the victory.
00:45:11 One for Malan, one for Popov so far.
00:45:15 And he looks confident there, doesn't he?
00:45:16 He looks happy with that one.
00:45:18 He's like, "Okay, I may have been eliminated on the horse,
00:45:20 "but give me a sword and I'll do some work here."
00:45:22 It's quick, wasn't it, from Malan,
00:45:24 but just tough against the left-hander
00:45:26 who's reaching the whole way through.
00:45:28 Just arching his body.
00:45:30 - This is the thing when you have nothing to lose,
00:45:32 you go for it.
00:45:33 And that kind of fear melts away
00:45:36 and you can just do what you do best as an athlete.
00:45:39 - Charles Brown from Great Britain.
00:45:41 Big cheer from the crowd as he has made his way
00:45:43 onto the piste.
00:45:44 You can hear the cheer maybe in the background.
00:45:46 13th at the World Cup in Cairo.
00:45:48 11th at the European Games in Poland.
00:45:50 Last time out for the 20-year-old.
00:45:51 So young.
00:45:52 Right-handed against that left-handed Popov.
00:45:56 (sword clinking)
00:45:58 Brown with 250 from the riding element.
00:46:02 - With that attack beautifully done by Brown.
00:46:06 Nice lunge forward.
00:46:08 - The cheer tells you exactly who won that one.
00:46:11 Big cheer for him.
00:46:12 Big smile on the British athlete's face.
00:46:17 - He's an amazing character all in all.
00:46:20 And he likes to have fun with the sport
00:46:22 and just has a smile through and through
00:46:25 no matter what happens in the competition.
00:46:27 And just great to see Apes having that positive energy
00:46:30 and radiating that to the crowd as well.
00:46:32 - Absolutely.
00:46:33 Well, here comes the Olympic silver medalist
00:46:36 from Tokyo, Ahmed El-Ghendi.
00:46:40 Be disappointed maybe to be starting so far down the list.
00:46:43 - So you could see the crowd still cheering on
00:46:48 for Charlie Brown, giving him that extra motivation he needs.
00:46:52 17 wins for El-Ghendi in the ranking round.
00:46:57 Not a terrible score at all, but 17.
00:47:01 It's a losing record after 35 bouts,
00:47:03 but they're going toe to toe once again.
00:47:05 - So Charlie Brown going for the attack.
00:47:14 He's pretty much aware that he was gonna go for it.
00:47:17 Took his blade with a parry and in to Charlie Brown
00:47:22 for this first win.
00:47:23 - Read that well, didn't he, Ahmed, just there.
00:47:25 Very nicely done.
00:47:26 So one British athlete disappears off
00:47:28 to be replaced by another, but just have a look at that.
00:47:31 Just really went for it, didn't he?
00:47:35 Almost went in and underneath.
00:47:38 - You can hear the cheering in the background
00:47:43 with Miles Pillage being the next athlete
00:47:46 up on the piece from Great Britain.
00:47:49 - World number 19 currently made his senior debut
00:47:52 in World Cup one in 2017 in Los Angeles.
00:47:56 Gold in both the team mixed relay and the team relay men
00:47:59 at the European Championships in Bath in 2019.
00:48:02 So he's won medals on this soil here before
00:48:04 in top level competition.
00:48:07 - So here we go then.
00:48:10 Beautiful foot touch from Ahmed El-Ghendi.
00:48:14 - That was very quick, wasn't it?
00:48:16 - Do you know what, I remember his foot touch
00:48:17 from yesterday as well in the semifinals.
00:48:20 Seems to be going well for him.
00:48:21 He is, again, holding a French grip
00:48:24 and giving that extra reach he needs for that foot touch.
00:48:27 - People will start to be looking at that, won't they,
00:48:30 and trying to work against it,
00:48:31 but it's working very nicely there for Ahmed El-Ghendi
00:48:34 at this early stage.
00:48:35 He's onto the piece from Hungary.
00:48:38 Comes Chababoum, world number three.
00:48:41 Silver at the World Cup in Cairo earlier this season.
00:48:46 Bronze at the European Games in Poland
00:48:48 just a couple of months ago, the start of July.
00:48:51 Chababoum, will he end El-Ghendi's run of two victories?
00:48:55 - These are athletes that have been pitted
00:48:59 against each other since the juniors
00:49:00 and there is a friendly rivalry there between them both
00:49:04 and it's good to see them fence against each other
00:49:07 on this bonus round strip.
00:49:08 But here we go, two wins for Ahmed El-Ghendi so far.
00:49:10 Chababoum looking for his first.
00:49:12 Goes for an eight.
00:49:14 Doesn't seem to be able to take that blade.
00:49:17 El-Ghendi is hot on his feet.
00:49:19 - Chababoum's currently doing a decent work of defending,
00:49:24 trying to run the clock down maybe,
00:49:25 but El-Ghendi wasn't letting him do that at all.
00:49:29 And goes in and takes the win,
00:49:31 three from three for Ahmed El-Ghendi.
00:49:34 - He does need those extra couple of touches
00:49:36 if he wants to go for a medal here.
00:49:38 - Good lunge there, wasn't it there?
00:49:40 El-Ghendi nicely in with a touch.
00:49:44 And on to the piece then representing Germany,
00:49:46 it's Marvin Dogg, made it through from 10th place
00:49:49 in his semifinal.
00:49:50 He started his semifinal a 28 seconds off from the lead,
00:49:54 but made it through, top nine went through.
00:49:56 He looked really assured on the run yesterday
00:49:58 when it came to the laser run, so keep your eyes on him.
00:50:01 Currently ranked 10th in the world,
00:50:03 bronze medal in the World Cup in Bulgaria earlier this season
00:50:06 and a sixth at the European Games
00:50:08 for the German athletes just entering the piece.
00:50:12 - So here we go then, Marvin Dogg is a pretty tall athlete,
00:50:17 which is kind of evens the score a bit
00:50:22 with his French grip.
00:50:24 - It's fast on his feet, isn't it, El-Ghendi though?
00:50:25 And, I'm not sure what's going on, no touch there.
00:50:30 Marvin Dogg does have priority,
00:50:34 so if it does time out to zero,
00:50:35 he would then progress through
00:50:37 as the athlete coming on to the piece.
00:50:38 So it is really the onus on El-Ghendi
00:50:40 to take the victory here.
00:50:43 - Five seconds on the clock.
00:50:45 - And.
00:50:46 - He flushed for Marvin Dogg, just ends that conversation.
00:50:50 - But three victories there for El-Ghendi
00:50:54 and I think the crowd responding nicely there.
00:50:57 Six points earned for him in this fencing bonus round,
00:50:59 gained some points that he lost back on the horse earlier on.
00:51:02 He had 283.
00:51:05 That note, he went.
00:51:08 - He had two knockdowns then.
00:51:11 - Two knockdowns, 282, sorry,
00:51:13 I haven't dealt any sword, two decent scores.
00:51:15 Again, six points back for him just there.
00:51:17 On to the piece comes Emiliano Hernandez from Mexico.
00:51:21 Left-handed, Hernandez.
00:51:32 Makes it trickier for Dogg to find a way through.
00:51:36 And, Hernandez.
00:51:41 Taking that one.
00:51:42 Not many of these athletes having a decent run here
00:51:46 apart from El-Ghendi.
00:51:47 I say he had a score of 282 in the riding,
00:51:50 so a decent position for him,
00:51:52 but needs to try and work his way up the order
00:51:54 and close that gap.
00:51:56 - Yeah, someone like Emiliano Hernandez,
00:51:58 especially not the best of swims for him,
00:52:01 so a good score here could go a long way.
00:52:03 - Wow, now we have three Korean athletes back to back
00:52:07 coming on to the piece.
00:52:08 The first one, Woon Taejoon.
00:52:11 Sixth in the world currently, bronze at the Tokyo Olympics,
00:52:14 gold in Budapest, silver in Ankara this year.
00:52:17 So already two very impressive medals for the Korean.
00:52:20 Very quick feet from Hernandez, dazzling there, but.
00:52:29 - It is Woon Taejoon.
00:52:32 - Dazzling, but no problem.
00:52:34 - You know, we talked about this yesterday.
00:52:37 Jun Woon Taejoon was said to be the best fencer in the world
00:52:41 in modern pentathlon as according to the GBR's stats, so.
00:52:46 - Well, I'm not gonna argue with those, that's for sure.
00:52:51 And I told him if he can get a decent run together,
00:52:54 he could really pull some points back, couldn't he?
00:52:56 Jun Woon Taejoon, up comes Jin Hwa Jung from Korea.
00:53:01 Ranked 100th in the world.
00:53:05 Fourth at the Tokyo Olympics.
00:53:07 So he's 100th in the world,
00:53:10 it's down to the amount of competitions he's entered.
00:53:14 - Nice flush there by Jun Woon Taejoon,
00:53:17 and another point for him.
00:53:19 So it's interesting to see teammates
00:53:22 fencing against each other.
00:53:24 Just makes for an interesting conversation.
00:53:26 - Very familiar with each other, weren't they?
00:53:27 That's the thing, so you can try to use that
00:53:29 to your advantage, but when someone like Jun Woon Taejoon
00:53:31 there comes in and does what he does,
00:53:33 it's very hard to beat him, as Maryam was saying.
00:53:36 Rated very, very highly in the fencing discipline.
00:53:39 He's a very, very solid pentathlete, to say the very least.
00:53:44 And Jihoon Lee now comes in for Korea.
00:53:47 So it's again Korea against Korea.
00:53:50 All in the mid-packs, they've got their eyes firmly
00:53:52 on the prize, haven't they, these three?
00:53:54 If they can get a decent points haul in the pool as well,
00:53:56 then they'll be fancying their chances for medals
00:53:59 after the laser run aspect of this pentathlon.
00:54:02 And it is--
00:54:04 - Woon Taejoon again.
00:54:05 - Another victory, yeah.
00:54:06 - Another pair he reposed.
00:54:07 Very, very strong Korean team, actually,
00:54:11 and we'll be definitely seeing them on the podium today
00:54:14 in the team medals.
00:54:16 It's just a matter of where on the podium,
00:54:18 but yeah, these three athletes are neck and neck right now.
00:54:23 - Only six athletes left on this element
00:54:30 of the competition as Vintar Bellot from France
00:54:33 makes his way on.
00:54:35 Bellot, 11th at the Olympics,
00:54:37 multiple youth and junior medalist.
00:54:39 Quite a few medals to his name,
00:54:42 including that gold at the World Championships in 2019.
00:54:47 But he would really, dearly love to get another one,
00:54:49 wouldn't he, but--
00:54:50 - He is the only hope for France in this final,
00:54:54 so carrying a lot of load on his shoulders.
00:54:59 - But back to the match, 19 seconds on the clock.
00:55:03 Bellot with the French grip,
00:55:07 but with Chun Wong Tai, I mean,
00:55:09 he's very skillful with his blade
00:55:15 and another good touch from Chun Wong Tai.
00:55:17 Four wins so far.
00:55:18 - Four wins, if he goes on a run,
00:55:19 he could get eight here,
00:55:21 the most we saw in the semifinals.
00:55:23 But up next is Mohamed El Gendy.
00:55:29 In fact, when we talk about the semifinals
00:55:31 and the fact we had eight there,
00:55:33 it was Eslam Hamad from Egypt
00:55:35 who had the eight victories in his semifinal,
00:55:37 but he has not made it through into the finals.
00:55:39 Even with those eight victories
00:55:40 in the fencing bonus round,
00:55:42 it all kind of fell apart for the Egyptian.
00:55:45 He's not made it through to the final,
00:55:46 but Hamad El Gendy certainly has,
00:55:49 and he's up next, ranked 23 in the world.
00:55:51 Started pentathlon age five, moved to squash,
00:55:54 stopped doing sport for five years,
00:55:55 got back in age 17.
00:55:58 He's only 21 years old.
00:56:00 - Mohamed has a very unique style when it comes to fencing.
00:56:05 It's kind of untraditional.
00:56:08 - Do you know, it looks awkward,
00:56:09 but it can be effective.
00:56:10 - Exactly, and look at that,
00:56:12 touch there from Hamad El Gendy,
00:56:13 I think confuses the athlete in front of him.
00:56:15 - What are you doing?
00:56:16 How dare you come here with your unorthodox methods?
00:56:20 Yeah, it's strange, isn't it?
00:56:21 He seems to be sort of a little bit nervous
00:56:23 and is a bit jittery, a bit sharp on the movements,
00:56:26 but I guess if it works for you, it works for you,
00:56:28 and it's certainly worked for Mohamed El Gendy just there.
00:56:32 He scored 22 victories in the fencing ranking round,
00:56:37 so it's working for him, that is for sure.
00:56:39 Lin Min Zhang is up next for China.
00:56:41 Mariam's very excited by this action here next to me.
00:56:51 Hamad El Gendy, look at this,
00:56:52 he's sort of enticing him on.
00:56:54 It's almost like a boxer dropping the guard, isn't it?
00:56:56 Like a boxer's coming, come on, in you come, in you come,
00:56:58 but also at the same time.
00:56:59 - He's waiting for him to come so he can go above.
00:57:01 Look at that, look at that jump.
00:57:03 That's...
00:57:05 - It sort of reminds me of the Holy Grail,
00:57:07 Monty Python, have a chew, have a chew.
00:57:09 But there you go, double touch there for them both.
00:57:11 It's a very unique style,
00:57:13 it's sort of teasing the whole way through.
00:57:15 It seems to be working, but it confuses them.
00:57:17 Look at it again there, the footwork from El Gendy,
00:57:20 straight off of Strictly Come Dancing,
00:57:22 and it's not working that time though.
00:57:25 But a decent points haul, as we say,
00:57:27 from the fencing ranking round for Hamad El Gendy.
00:57:32 Scored 22 victories there in the ranking round,
00:57:34 so whatever it is he does,
00:57:36 I mean, he must burn a lot of calories,
00:57:37 it uses a lot of energy, it makes me tired just watching him,
00:57:39 but he's got energy in abundance, it seems,
00:57:42 the young Egyptian.
00:57:44 Big cheer goes up then for the reigning Olympic champion,
00:57:47 Zhou Cheng, who takes his way onto the piste.
00:57:52 He's got more of an orthodox style
00:57:53 as opposed to El Gendy that we just saw.
00:57:56 He is left-handed, both of them in fact.
00:58:00 So left-handed against left-handed,
00:58:04 it's essentially as it would be
00:58:06 with right-handed athletes going against each other.
00:58:09 Doesn't take a genius to work that out,
00:58:10 I'm sure you agree, but Lin Bin Zhang leads the way.
00:58:14 - Zhou Cheng again, a very strong fencer,
00:58:18 just waiting for that opportunity,
00:58:20 and he goes for it.
00:58:22 Nice big cheer from the fans here and back.
00:58:25 - Can tell who they're supporting, can't you?
00:58:27 That is for sure.
00:58:28 And so only two athletes to go,
00:58:32 most that Cheng could get from this would be six points,
00:58:35 he's got two so far.
00:58:37 He had a decent ride, didn't he?
00:58:40 293 points from the ride.
00:58:42 - He's currently in first place.
00:58:44 - Yeah, absolutely decent points
00:58:46 from the fencing ranking round as well for Zhou Cheng.
00:58:50 235 points for those 22 victories in his ranking round,
00:58:54 and it is Mohamed Shaban up next, the Egyptian.
00:58:57 - There's a bit of rivalry between those two.
00:59:00 I'm sure you saw the drama at the World Cup final,
00:59:03 that slip up from Zhou Cheng and Mohamed
00:59:05 taking the Olympic gold medallion.
00:59:06 - Over the line, yeah.
00:59:08 Well, both had 22 victories yesterday,
00:59:10 the day before in the ranking round.
00:59:11 And it is left-handed versus right-handed,
00:59:18 so it's a bit more awkward for Shaban here.
00:59:20 And it's a victory for the British athlete Zhou Cheng,
00:59:26 eliminating Mohamed Shaban just there.
00:59:27 So will he make it three from three,
00:59:31 gaining six additional points?
00:59:33 200, 532 right now, so he currently leads
00:59:37 by seven seconds over Hernandez.
00:59:39 He'll be pleased with that one
00:59:41 before they head to the pool.
00:59:45 (timer beeping)
00:59:48 So one more athlete to go,
00:59:50 and it is the Hungarian, Bence Demeter.
00:59:53 Now, Bence Demeter had the best record
00:59:55 from the ranking round with 23 victories, 240 points,
00:59:59 but a disaster for him in the saddle
01:00:01 with 64 points off that 300.
01:00:03 They've put him down in 15th place.
01:00:07 As we go into the final bout of the fencing bonus round.
01:00:13 Bence Demeter has priority, so if it times to zero,
01:00:15 he would gain those four points as he only has one bout,
01:00:19 so he would get the additional bonus of two.
01:00:21 Zhou Cheng looking a bit more aggressive now.
01:00:25 It is his to win, he must make it,
01:00:27 and they go back, 6.4 seconds left on here.
01:00:32 The onus is definitely on Zhou Cheng here.
01:00:35 If he wants any points, he must win this bout.
01:00:38 With only a few seconds to go, and Demeter
01:00:42 (timer beeping)
01:00:43 secures the victory there at the very end.
01:00:45 So Zhou Cheng taking four points there
01:00:48 with the two victories.
01:00:49 Bence Demeter gets four points
01:00:50 with his one victory at the end.
01:00:52 So he gains some more points back,
01:00:54 and that'll help him move himself from 15th to 14th
01:00:57 there with 480, but this is how he did it.
01:00:59 Zhou Cheng there on the right-hand side,
01:01:01 the Olympic champion Demeter there with a flesh forwards.
01:01:05 Off he went, and nothing Cheng could do.
01:01:11 Strong performance from Bence Demeter.
01:01:14 He'll be licking his wounds certainly after that riding,
01:01:16 but he's got his head back in the game.
01:01:18 Very well done to all those 18 athletes,
01:01:21 and that's how it stands.
01:01:22 Zhou Cheng, 532 points.
01:01:24 He's seven seconds, seven points ahead
01:01:27 of Emiliano Hernandez from Mexico.
01:01:29 Jihoon Lee, 523 points, nine seconds back off of them
01:01:33 at the start of the laser run if it were stand like this.
01:01:35 Amadel Gendy on 520.
01:01:38 Looking back there, 503 points for the ninth place
01:01:41 athlete, then you go to Wontai Jun, 503 as well.
01:01:44 457 for Charles Brown from Great Britain,
01:01:48 and Myles Pillage also got some work to do,
01:01:51 but strong in the pool.
01:01:53 We'll see what happens very, very soon.
01:01:56 The athletes are starting to make their way across.
01:01:59 That is how it currently stands.
01:02:00 Roman Popov, 207 after the bonus round.
01:02:05 Let's have a look back then, shall we?
01:02:06 Some of the action from the fencing bonus round.
01:02:10 (upbeat music)
01:02:12 (crowd murmuring)
01:02:15 (upbeat music)
01:02:18 (crowd murmuring)
01:02:20 (upbeat music)
01:02:23 (crowd murmuring)
01:02:26 (upbeat music)
01:02:30 (crowd murmuring)
01:02:32 (upbeat music)
01:02:36 (upbeat music)
01:02:51 (upbeat music)
01:02:53 Great scenes there from the fencing bonus round.
01:03:05 Only two more elements of this to go,
01:03:08 and the next one is the pool,
01:03:10 and this is how the athletes will make that transition.
01:03:11 It's a short walk, around five minutes.
01:03:14 Five minutes walk from that fencing bonus round
01:03:17 inside the building they go to the pool.
01:03:19 It's a 25 meter pool, so expect some slightly quicker times.
01:03:23 This is how it works, 200 meters,
01:03:24 so eight lengths of that 25 meter pool.
01:03:27 Two minutes 30 gives you 250 points for every second
01:03:30 you go quicker than that two minutes 30,
01:03:32 you gain two extra points for every second you go slower.
01:03:35 In that two minutes 30, you lose those extra points,
01:03:40 those two points, so you want to gain yourself
01:03:42 a decent time.
01:03:43 Will they be able to do it?
01:03:44 Well, only time will tell.
01:03:46 That is the nature of this particular beast,
01:03:48 and we have a look at swimming records
01:03:49 with Jamie Cook, the British athlete
01:03:52 of the European Games back in 2011.
01:03:54 He holds the record for a 25 meter pool, the 149.59.
01:03:59 I'm not sure we're going to see anything like that here
01:04:02 in the final here today, but yesterday we did see
01:04:07 some very, very impressive times in the semifinals
01:04:11 with some low twos.
01:04:12 201 there for Ciccinelli.
01:04:15 Now, he's not made it through,
01:04:16 but Charles Brown is in there with a 201 as well.
01:04:20 Quite a few athletes in the very, very low twos.
01:04:25 I'm just looking back a little bit further.
01:04:27 Myles Pillage with a 157.47, so I said he was quick
01:04:30 in the pool, and he certainly is that.
01:04:32 But we have another guest coming in right now,
01:04:36 and Mariam is here, so I'm going to allow Mariam
01:04:37 to do the honors.
01:04:39 - So, an Egyptian athlete is here with us
01:04:43 in the commentary box today.
01:04:44 Malak Ismail, the youth world champion,
01:04:48 and she just won the women's relay earlier this week
01:04:53 with her partner Amira N'Diel.
01:04:55 - Yeah, absolutely.
01:04:56 - They got gold, so welcome.
01:04:58 - Thank you.
01:04:59 - Nice to have you here.
01:05:00 - It's great to have you here.
01:05:01 Now, it's been an interesting few days here in Bath,
01:05:05 not just for yourself, but all the other athletes.
01:05:06 What are your thoughts, first of all,
01:05:08 on what you've seen, how the competition's gone for you?
01:05:11 - The competition is really great,
01:05:13 and the weather, it's some days sunny
01:05:16 and some days rainy.
01:05:17 It's really, in my semifinals,
01:05:20 all the laser run was in rainy weather,
01:05:23 so it was really the first time for me
01:05:24 to shoot in this rain.
01:05:26 It was sometimes, yeah, challenging for me.
01:05:30 - Weather like this is quite nice to run in, isn't it,
01:05:32 as long as it's not too windy,
01:05:33 but when the rain starts to fall,
01:05:34 it's certainly not a pleasure,
01:05:36 especially with the laser run.
01:05:36 - Yeah, it's not a pleasure, and maybe it started to fall
01:05:39 just one minute before the start,
01:05:41 and during all the competition, it just rained.
01:05:45 - It rained and rained and rained.
01:05:46 But it's a nice facility here in Bath.
01:05:48 It's been a lovely week or so
01:05:50 with the Laser Run World Championships,
01:05:51 and here for us with this pentathlon itself.
01:05:54 - Yeah, really, the organization is really amazing.
01:05:58 - And for Egypt as well.
01:05:59 I mean, I arrived on the Friday
01:06:00 just before the Laser Run World Championships,
01:06:03 and Egypt just brought a huge amount of athletes
01:06:05 and a great contingent.
01:06:06 You all arrived at the same time,
01:06:08 or one big coach as well, it seemed.
01:06:10 So it's nice to see so many Egyptians,
01:06:12 and also seeing Laser Run and pentathlon
01:06:15 such a high level when it comes down to Egyptian sports.
01:06:18 - Yeah, there was a big,
01:06:20 like too many athletes in the Laser Run.
01:06:23 We're a big team.
01:06:25 And we got too many medals in the Laser Run.
01:06:30 We're in top performance,
01:06:32 and here we are two golds till now
01:06:34 for the women's and men's relay.
01:06:36 - Yeah, amazing results from the Egyptian team.
01:06:38 - Yeah, looking forward for the men's individual.
01:06:41 - Well, it's going pretty strong here, isn't it, Mariam?
01:06:44 - Yes, Malek, again, you are a very accomplished athlete
01:06:48 at such a young age.
01:06:49 You compete in the youth.
01:06:51 This was your last year in the youth, I believe?
01:06:52 - Yeah, last year.
01:06:53 - Yes, but you have been competing in the senior scene
01:06:56 since you were a youth athlete,
01:06:58 so how is that for you,
01:06:59 finding those more experienced athletes
01:07:02 in the game with you,
01:07:04 and just fencing alongside of these athletes,
01:07:07 shooting alongside of them?
01:07:08 How does that feel?
01:07:09 Does it give you motivation,
01:07:10 or is it more of a fear thing?
01:07:12 - No, it's not fear.
01:07:13 As I just compete, as I'm too young,
01:07:16 I just compete getting experience.
01:07:18 I'm not looking for the podium for right now.
01:07:21 Just the experience is for me.
01:07:23 I don't need to do--
01:07:27 - Too much, yeah.
01:07:27 - Yeah, too much.
01:07:28 I just focus on myself,
01:07:30 but it's really pride to maybe shoot and run.
01:07:33 - Beside the idols.
01:07:34 - Beside the Olympians, yeah.
01:07:35 - You have so many people, though, watching you,
01:07:36 don't you, at the moment?
01:07:37 'Cause every time you seem to step into an arena,
01:07:39 everyone's like, "Oh, there she is, there she is."
01:07:41 You know, and it is--
01:07:42 - No, not like that.
01:07:42 - You are seeing the eyes of people starting to turn--
01:07:44 - She is popular.
01:07:45 - Yeah, exactly.
01:07:46 People are looking at you,
01:07:47 and they can see that they're kind of watching
01:07:48 what's going on in your world,
01:07:49 because at the moment, it seems to be,
01:07:51 when we look to the future,
01:07:52 your name is firmly in everyone's thoughts.
01:07:55 - Yeah, I hope so.
01:07:56 (both laughing)
01:07:57 - I think it's more than I hope.
01:07:57 I think it's a definite,
01:07:59 particularly what we've seen in the last season or so,
01:08:01 and in the last week
01:08:02 with the Laser Run World Championships.
01:08:04 - Yeah, just, I'm gonna get back to one more question,
01:08:07 and then we can move on with the comment.
01:08:08 - Okay, go on.
01:08:10 - Of course, you've been competing
01:08:12 in the obstacle course in the youth,
01:08:14 and next week in the juniors as well,
01:08:16 you're gonna be competing in that.
01:08:18 Do you, just give us a little insight
01:08:20 on how it's been as an athlete
01:08:22 to transition from riding to the obstacle course.
01:08:26 Is it fun for you?
01:08:27 Do you enjoy it?
01:08:28 - I enjoy the obstacle.
01:08:30 I didn't train for it very well,
01:08:33 but it's really amazing,
01:08:35 and it's maybe an adventure discipline.
01:08:37 I love the riding too,
01:08:40 and I should love it
01:08:41 because I still compete in the riding.
01:08:43 - Yes, but you're looking forward to the--
01:08:45 - Yeah, I'm looking forward to the new discipline.
01:08:47 - It's a new challenge, isn't it?
01:08:49 - It is, yeah.
01:08:50 I mean, these athletes are full of surprises,
01:08:52 and the challenge is coming their way,
01:08:53 left and right. - It's done well.
01:08:55 - But yes, thank you so much for joining us,
01:08:57 and good luck in all your endeavors,
01:08:59 and yeah, we'll see you soon.
01:09:01 - Thank you.
01:09:02 - We'll be watching you.
01:09:03 That is for sure. - We'll be watching you.
01:09:04 - Yes, we'll be watching you.
01:09:05 Every time you do anything, we'll be watching.
01:09:07 Thank you so much for joining us.
01:09:08 - Thank you. - A real pleasure.
01:09:10 There you go, great to hear the thoughts.
01:09:11 I mean, what a fantastic athlete she is,
01:09:13 and it's just good to hear her innermost thoughts as well,
01:09:16 isn't it, Marion?
01:09:17 - Yes, it's always nice to hear from the young talent here.
01:09:22 Malik is 18 years of age,
01:09:23 and a bunch of these athletes are above 30, so--
01:09:26 - This is crazy, isn't it?
01:09:27 - Yeah, it is, and it just goes to show
01:09:29 that it isn't really related to age.
01:09:32 Of course, there's experience in play,
01:09:33 there's stamina in play,
01:09:35 but you see a wide range of athletes
01:09:38 competing and winning, and yeah.
01:09:41 - She's a very composed head on her shoulders, though.
01:09:43 You know, when I was 18 years old,
01:09:45 if you'd asked me any questions,
01:09:46 I'd have grunted at you and ran the other way,
01:09:47 so she holds herself very, very well,
01:09:49 very, very composed, very impressive figure.
01:09:52 - Do you know what, actually?
01:09:53 I think in sports in general,
01:09:56 individuals do seem to mature earlier than other people.
01:10:00 I mean, the experiences they go through,
01:10:02 the responsibility they have on their shoulders,
01:10:03 even at a very young age.
01:10:04 They have contracts, they have just,
01:10:08 yeah, it's not easy being an athlete,
01:10:11 but it definitely does add to your character.
01:10:13 - And particularly something like pentathlon as well,
01:10:15 because there's only one element of pentathlon
01:10:17 where you come up against anybody else,
01:10:18 and that's the fencing.
01:10:19 I was thinking about that maybe links to tennis, really.
01:10:22 There was a quote in one of the tennis documentaries
01:10:24 recently saying, "When you lose in tennis,
01:10:26 "you don't just lose to your opponent,
01:10:27 "you lose to yourself."
01:10:29 And with pentathlon, the only time you lose
01:10:31 to your opponent, maybe, is in fencing,
01:10:33 but every other aspect of it,
01:10:36 it's you against the discipline.
01:10:38 It's you against the pool, it's you against the laser run,
01:10:41 you against the shooting part of the laser run,
01:10:42 you with the horse.
01:10:44 And that means that you have to be very, very thick-skinned.
01:10:46 You have to be very, very good at being able
01:10:48 to stay composed when things aren't going well.
01:10:51 And we've heard a few times,
01:10:52 I've been in conversations with people
01:10:54 over the last day or so, who come and speak to us
01:10:56 when things aren't going well.
01:10:58 You know, and it's great when things are going brilliantly.
01:10:59 You don't really learn very much about yourself
01:11:01 when things are going really well.
01:11:02 It's those moments when you drop the ball,
01:11:04 when it doesn't work, and you manage to pull yourself up
01:11:07 and carry on.
01:11:08 - Yeah, I mean, there's only one way to go
01:11:11 when you're down, which is up,
01:11:12 and that's how these athletes learn and improve.
01:11:16 - Absolutely right, and I think it's also worth
01:11:18 talking mental health as well,
01:11:19 because there's a lot of focus
01:11:21 with the teams around these athletes,
01:11:23 giving them the support that they need,
01:11:24 because it is a very lonely place out there
01:11:26 when you're competing on your own,
01:11:28 particularly if you're in the pool
01:11:29 or at the range or something,
01:11:30 you know, and you're shooting, and it's not going to plan.
01:11:32 Here are the six athletes in for heat number one.
01:11:35 This is Miles Pillage, Bence Demeter,
01:11:36 Chaba Boum, Martin Vlach, Charles Brown,
01:11:39 and Roman Popov making up our first heat,
01:11:42 these athletes, bottom of the pile in the ranking round.
01:11:46 And they'll be out first, trying to set times.
01:11:51 Out of all these athletes, well,
01:11:53 it is the British athlete, Miles Pillage,
01:11:55 that is the quickest.
01:11:56 In fact, looking down the list here,
01:11:58 there's only Joe Chung that seems to be able
01:12:00 to swim faster than Miles Pillage.
01:12:02 And I mentioned the record for a 25 meter pool
01:12:06 is 149.59 by Jamie Cook, the British athlete
01:12:11 of the European Championships back in 2011,
01:12:14 and there is Miles Pillage, a huge round of applause for him.
01:12:16 Not sure if we're going to see a 149,
01:12:18 but we might see a 155.
01:12:21 Bence Demeter, now he's got his work cut out,
01:12:24 hasn't he, Bence Demeter?
01:12:25 He needs a decent time if he's going to start
01:12:27 climbing the order 204, his qualification time
01:12:30 for the Hungarian.
01:12:31 - The second Hungarian making it out is Chaba Boum
01:12:38 in lane number four.
01:12:39 - World number three, Chaba Boum.
01:12:43 Fantastic name, isn't it?
01:12:45 Here comes from the Czech Republic,
01:12:48 from Czechia, Martin Vlach.
01:12:50 (crowd cheering)
01:12:52 Another one of those athletes that's got to stay composed.
01:12:58 Same with all of them, really,
01:12:59 but here is Charlie Brown from Great Britain.
01:13:02 The cheer goes up around the arena,
01:13:05 the pool there for him.
01:13:06 Also out here as well, you can't hear it from out here,
01:13:09 but there are some fans sitting
01:13:10 and watching the big screens around here,
01:13:11 haven't made their way to the pool,
01:13:12 but here comes from the Ukraine, Roman Popov.
01:13:15 Roman, well, we know his competition is over after that,
01:13:19 it's elimination from the riding.
01:13:21 We had one elimination in the final earlier on,
01:13:23 the women, Michele Gulyas from Hungary,
01:13:25 one here in the final for the men,
01:13:28 and it was Roman Popov.
01:13:30 So his competition essentially is over,
01:13:32 there's no way he's going to make that time back,
01:13:34 even if he had afterburners or something like that,
01:13:36 but the Ukraine athlete will be doing all he can
01:13:38 to put in a decent--
01:13:40 - Swim time, yeah.
01:13:41 - Swim time and then decent performance
01:13:45 in the laser run coming up.
01:13:48 Here we go, heat number one of three.
01:13:51 These athletes after this will make their way back outside
01:13:53 and start warming up ahead of the laser run.
01:13:56 Go through their final moments.
01:13:57 In position very quickly, wasn't he, Roman Popov?
01:14:02 Stood there for quite a lot of time.
01:14:03 Great start in this nearside lane.
01:14:12 - Miles Pilic.
01:14:16 Already a length ahead of his competition
01:14:19 in the first 25 meters.
01:14:20 - He's a big lad, isn't he, Miles?
01:14:22 He's broad shoulders, he's got a really good swimmers frame,
01:14:25 and he's very quick in the pool.
01:14:27 He's already pulled out around about a length ahead,
01:14:30 isn't he, as he turns, wow, 50 meters in 25.93.
01:14:35 It's looking good, and I said to you that he,
01:14:38 qualification time for Miles Pilic was at 155.13,
01:14:42 so bizarrely, he'll keep on this pace.
01:14:46 He won't really drop off this pace, I don't think.
01:14:48 He can maintain it for quite some time,
01:14:50 and a 25 meter pool for someone like Miles Pilic
01:14:52 will come back to him because he's such a strong swimmer.
01:14:55 If this was a 50 meter pool, he might find he can
01:14:57 stretch the advantage even further
01:14:58 because there's less turns, and those athletes
01:15:01 that maybe aren't as good in the pool,
01:15:02 they get more time to push off from the wall
01:15:04 as opposed to having to keep themselves going.
01:15:06 Miles Pilic, 55.47 at the halfway stage.
01:15:10 Looking good for a 150, but it won't be a 150.
01:15:12 He'll drop off ever so slightly from that one.
01:15:14 Maybe a 153, 154, but he's got a decent three second lead,
01:15:19 hasn't he, in this heat?
01:15:20 Doesn't really matter when we talk about positions here.
01:15:23 It's all about time because you get points awarded
01:15:25 based on your own individual time,
01:15:27 so all times are relative.
01:15:29 Looks to me like it is Martin Vlak from the Czech Republic.
01:15:35 - Chababum.
01:15:36 - In lane five, he's struggling a little bit.
01:15:39 In second place is Chababum and Charles Brown.
01:15:41 Behind him, Charlie Brown, the other British athlete
01:15:44 in this heat, heat one of three.
01:15:47 As to the time we go.
01:15:49 - Ross Bidge is making sure everybody else
01:15:53 looks like they're not moving.
01:15:54 - He's doing a very good job of making sure
01:15:56 they all look very, very slow,
01:15:57 which of course they're not.
01:15:58 And he comes up to the wall, 155.13 yesterday,
01:16:01 and a 157.23.
01:16:05 - Chababum three seconds behind them.
01:16:09 - Yeah, pedestrian.
01:16:11 - Makes it look like Chababum, but it certainly wasn't that.
01:16:14 Two minutes, yeah.
01:16:17 And then Roman Popov there with a six seconds back,
01:16:21 a 203 for Roman Popov, so pretty much the same
01:16:24 as his qualification time yesterday.
01:16:25 They're very consistent with their times, aren't they?
01:16:28 They'll put in a 203 or a 155,
01:16:30 and it's just what they seem to be able to deliver
01:16:32 time after time after time.
01:16:34 - Yeah, you know what, even regardless of positions now,
01:16:36 I think athletes do have a set record in mind
01:16:41 when it comes to swimming, because they don't want
01:16:44 to exert themselves too much.
01:16:45 I mean, Joseph Chung, we spoke to him in the last competition
01:16:49 he was saying that even though he could potentially swim
01:16:53 three, four seconds faster, he chooses not to.
01:16:57 And yeah, I think that makes the difference
01:16:59 with the lazy run.
01:17:00 - And with someone like Joe Chung, who could do a 155,
01:17:02 well, that's gonna put him in a very good stead.
01:17:03 Mars Pillage, 799, Chubba Boom, 790.
01:17:06 Remember, these are the lower scoring athletes here.
01:17:09 Joe Chung, well, it says next on there,
01:17:12 he's still got to go.
01:17:13 He'll be going in heat number three, Joe Chung,
01:17:15 and he's already got a little head start,
01:17:19 should we say, with the lazy run.
01:17:20 Up next then, we've got Dog from Germany,
01:17:23 Valentin Bolo from France, Wontai Jun from Korea.
01:17:26 The two Egyptians, Mohamed Shaban and Ahmed El-Ghendi,
01:17:30 and Giorgio Milan.
01:17:31 Quickest out of all these is the Italian athlete.
01:17:35 The first up, we welcome Marvin Dog from Germany,
01:17:40 ranked number 10 in the world.
01:17:42 2023, a bronze in Bulgaria.
01:17:47 Valentin Bolo from France up next.
01:17:52 - I like these quick introductions
01:17:57 that the athletes get to have.
01:17:59 Gives them a bit more.
01:18:01 - Gets them through quickly, there is Wontai Jun.
01:18:04 - Bit of a jog.
01:18:06 - Yeah, he's getting there quickly, isn't he?
01:18:08 Yeah, he just wants to get it done, doesn't he?
01:18:10 The bronze medalist in Tokyo.
01:18:11 Mohamed Shaban.
01:18:14 - World Cup final winner and already qualified to Paris.
01:18:19 - Ranked number one in the world.
01:18:21 Ahmed El-Ghendi, the next Egyptian athlete,
01:18:24 making his way out.
01:18:28 Silver in Tokyo.
01:18:30 Gold in Cairo at the World Cup.
01:18:33 Bronze at the World Cup in Ankara.
01:18:34 And Giorgio Milan out next then.
01:18:37 The Italian in his second heat of three.
01:18:42 Quickest time, as I say, is this athlete,
01:18:48 the Italian Giorgio Milan, with a 159.27,
01:18:51 the quickest of these six athletes anyway.
01:18:55 There aren't many that go under two minutes,
01:18:56 but he is one that can do it, a stretch.
01:18:59 Will he stretch himself though?
01:19:01 That is one of the questions that we'll have answered.
01:19:05 Giorgio Milan, only two knockdowns in the riding,
01:19:10 a good position for him to be in.
01:19:12 - At the halfway stage of this competition,
01:19:24 heat number two in the pool as we speak.
01:19:27 Men's final.
01:19:30 - Giorgio Milan has his work cut out
01:19:33 after the fencing ranking round with 15 victories,
01:19:36 only 200 points for him from the ranking round.
01:19:41 So he's already some way back off.
01:19:43 So even with that riding, he's got his work cut out.
01:19:45 So he will be trying to put in a decent time
01:19:48 as we get to the 50 meter mark.
01:19:49 And it is Ahmed El-Ghendi, Shaban in second.
01:19:52 So Egypt one and two, and then Milan in three,
01:19:55 but not far back at all, just over half a second back.
01:19:57 So they're very, very close, aren't they?
01:20:00 - Yes, it's a very tight race between those three,
01:20:03 but again, it's a race against the clock
01:20:08 and not your opponents.
01:20:09 - Just be trying to do what they need to do.
01:20:12 Now be trying to ignore the noise from the others around.
01:20:15 The whistles start to sound.
01:20:17 We were talking whistling, weren't we, yesterday.
01:20:18 These coaches have unique whistles.
01:20:21 It's like penguins when they come back to meet their child.
01:20:25 They've got the fish back and they scream at each other
01:20:27 and they have that unique call.
01:20:28 And when you're in the pool, you only know,
01:20:30 you listen out for that one whistle you were saying,
01:20:32 the whistle that you know,
01:20:33 and it's never a pleasure to hear you say it.
01:20:36 - Definitely.
01:20:37 Anyways, back to the pool,
01:20:39 Ahmed El-Ghendi in the white cap in your shot.
01:20:42 And just out of your shot there is Manu Shaban
01:20:44 in the black cap, just trailing behind, not too far behind.
01:20:48 - It's very close, isn't it?
01:20:49 - 150 meters, so 25% distance to go now.
01:20:52 Ahmed El-Ghendi leading Manu Shaban second.
01:20:56 Georgia Milan just under a second back in total.
01:20:59 Will he put a spurt on here for the final 25 meters?
01:21:03 Milan, they all turn pretty much together,
01:21:05 but it is a slight lead, should we say, for El-Ghendi.
01:21:10 But I think he's been drawn back.
01:21:12 It's a deceiving angle, that's right.
01:21:15 Yeah, he is ahead, as you can see.
01:21:17 Not far, though, as they go up to the wall
01:21:19 for the final time, and Ahmed El-Ghendi does it with a 158.
01:21:23 Yeah, let me put that into some sort of context for you
01:21:26 for his time just there for Ahmed El-Ghendi.
01:21:30 He qualified with a 204.69.
01:21:34 - No, but I think he was taking it easy
01:21:36 during the semifinals, yeah, so--
01:21:37 - Which means he's taken it easy in the semifinals,
01:21:39 and he knows he can't take it easy here in the finals,
01:21:41 so he's given himself a six-second bump up there,
01:21:44 which is a decent point for him.
01:21:46 He'll be happy with that one,
01:21:46 but it does go to show in the semifinals,
01:21:49 all you need to do is progress to the final.
01:21:51 We lost some big names, didn't we, though,
01:21:53 in the semifinals yesterday, some really big names.
01:21:55 We lost the likes of world number five,
01:21:58 Chang Man-Seo from Korea,
01:21:59 Valentine Prad, world number seven,
01:22:01 Patu Ciccinelli, the Italian,
01:22:04 who actually started inside the top nine,
01:22:07 and he dropped out.
01:22:08 Patrick Dogg, who started fourth in semifinal B,
01:22:11 and he fell out of qualifying for the final.
01:22:14 Aslam Hamed, even though he had eight bouts
01:22:16 in the semifinal for the fencing, he dropped out as well.
01:22:20 And this is the way it stands,
01:22:20 Woon Tai-Joon leads 813, 813 now for Mohamed Chaban,
01:22:25 811 for Alphand El-Ghendi, Marvin Dogg with 807.
01:22:29 It's very, very congested once again,
01:22:31 only 13 seconds between first and sixth,
01:22:34 only 14 seconds between first and seventh,
01:22:36 but we've got the big guns to come
01:22:38 with Joe Chung, Hernandez, El-Ghendi,
01:22:40 they're all in there, these are the guys leading the way
01:22:42 after that fencing ranking round.
01:22:44 They have got some quick times among them,
01:22:47 including Joe Chung with a 155.07,
01:22:51 Hernandez with a 203.68, Ji-Hun Lee, Alphand El-Ghendi,
01:22:55 Lin Bin Zhang, and Jin Hua Zhong.
01:22:58 For someone like Alphand El-Ghendi,
01:22:59 we know what he can do when it comes down to Olympics
01:23:01 and other medals as well.
01:23:02 Would he be happy being in that second heat?
01:23:04 What do you think, or would he prefer to be in heat three?
01:23:07 - I think maybe it's a blessing in disguise,
01:23:11 let's just introduce this athlete.
01:23:13 - Yeah, well here he is, that's what he needed,
01:23:14 the introduction, the big grin on his face there.
01:23:16 It is the Olympic champion, the reigning world champion,
01:23:18 Joe Chung from Great Britain.
01:23:20 Next from Mexico, Emiliano Hernandez,
01:23:23 he makes his way out, jogs along the pool.
01:23:25 Intake of water as he goes, stay hydrated.
01:23:32 The Korean, Ji-Hun Lee now makes his way.
01:23:34 And then we look,
01:23:41 Mohamed El-Ghendi makes his way along.
01:23:44 21, a very slight frame, doesn't he, Mohamed El-Ghendi?
01:23:52 Well here is Lin Bin Zhang from China.
01:23:54 20816 is what he qualified in yesterday.
01:24:01 Ji-Hun Lee, from Korea,
01:24:06 with a 1.59 qualification time for
01:24:10 the first time in a long time.
01:24:11 - And here is Joe Chung from Korea.
01:24:14 So you can hear the crowd,
01:24:17 they're getting restless, aren't they?
01:24:19 The Korean athletes, both at the Tokyo Olympics,
01:24:22 currently 100th in the world, so you know,
01:24:25 not a great season for him in ranking competitions,
01:24:27 but that's just the nature of the beast, isn't it?
01:24:29 Joe Chung.
01:24:31 Crowds, yeah, they're just giving him a cheer, aren't they?
01:24:35 - Look at that Olympic tattoo, I always love
01:24:38 that most of them do have the Olympic rings on.
01:24:40 - Well, I definitely would.
01:24:42 I might get it done anyway.
01:24:44 It'll start a conversation.
01:24:47 He's got it on his ribcage just there,
01:24:48 quite a painful place to have a tattoo, I believe.
01:24:50 I've got one on my arm, it hurt a fair bit,
01:24:51 so that must hurt more.
01:24:52 Anyway, here we go for heat number three.
01:24:54 Into the pool they go.
01:24:56 Look at Joe Chung in the inside lane,
01:24:58 stays under for a lot longer, doesn't he,
01:24:59 with a flutter kick as he carries on going.
01:25:02 Look at his stroke.
01:25:04 He's just got such a calm, relaxed stroke.
01:25:07 A lot of them seem to be more kind of frantic,
01:25:09 and their arms are constantly moving,
01:25:11 where Joe seems to stretch and stretch and stretch.
01:25:13 It's kind of quite an elegant swimming style.
01:25:16 It's really relaxed.
01:25:18 - Yeah, it's just him getting the most
01:25:21 out of every single stroke,
01:25:22 making sure he's carrying enough water in his palms,
01:25:25 and that his feet are continuously kicking.
01:25:29 And yeah, it's the calm ones that swim the best.
01:25:33 - Absolutely right, and on the far side,
01:25:35 you can see another calm swimmer,
01:25:37 Jin Hwa Jung from Korea with a 1.59.
01:25:39 We're expecting both of these,
01:25:40 Chung and Jung, to go under the two-minute mark,
01:25:44 but how much under?
01:25:46 Joe Chung, he qualified yesterday,
01:25:48 but he gave us sort of palpitations, didn't he?
01:25:51 He slowed right down, and he was almost, almost caught.
01:25:54 - By Patrick Dog. - By Patrick Dog, yeah.
01:25:58 But he wasn't caught,
01:25:59 so he just managed to look over his shoulder,
01:26:02 and they got across the line ahead.
01:26:03 I think they probably could have got a wriggle on
01:26:05 if they needed to, but it was a condensed area,
01:26:07 and if he had needed to go,
01:26:08 and there was somebody in front that hadn't got the memo,
01:26:10 well, he could have lost his place in the final here,
01:26:13 the World Championships in Hongseoul.
01:26:14 He certainly wouldn't have wanted that.
01:26:17 And with just two lengths to go after this touch up here,
01:26:22 they move on to the final element
01:26:26 of this World Championship final,
01:26:28 and it is Jin Hwa Jung that leads the way
01:26:29 with a 1.30.68 with two lengths, 50 meters to go,
01:26:33 so a quarter distance left here,
01:26:34 but Zhou Cheng just continuing to grind it out, isn't he?
01:26:38 Nice, in second place at the moment, a turn there.
01:26:41 Won't be concerned by this,
01:26:43 he'll be having his own pace, his own...
01:26:45 (whistle blows)
01:26:48 way of going about the swim for heat number three.
01:26:51 And it is a clear victory on the far side there,
01:26:55 heat number, lane number seven,
01:26:56 and it is Jin Hwa Jung who goes with a 2.01.92.
01:27:01 Zhou Cheng, well, half a second back.
01:27:04 (sighs)
01:27:06 Well, half a second is a 2.02,
01:27:08 so technically a second in terms of points.
01:27:11 - Yeah, he won't be too concerned about that, Zhou Cheng.
01:27:17 I think if he'd have really, really wanted to put in a time,
01:27:20 he would have put in a time,
01:27:21 so he's clearly conserving his energy.
01:27:22 I wonder whether he was carrying anything then
01:27:24 from the semifinal,
01:27:25 whether it was that he was struggling out there,
01:27:27 because he wasn't the pace we expected.
01:27:29 He dropped off now.
01:27:30 Is that, for him, just getting through into the final,
01:27:33 or does it say he wants even more energy
01:27:35 going into the Laser Run for this final here today,
01:27:37 for the all-important medal final?
01:27:39 - Yeah, I mean, he's in first position at the moment,
01:27:41 so I think that he's gonna need every ounce of energy
01:27:45 he can get for the Laser Run.
01:27:47 He has some beasts chasing him down,
01:27:50 so it might have not been his best of swims,
01:27:54 but I think it was something that was deliberately done
01:27:58 to conserve his energy for the Laser Run.
01:28:00 He's gonna need every ounce of energy
01:28:03 he can get, and we know that Zhou Cheng
01:28:04 can pull off an amazing finish.
01:28:07 He's done it multiple times, and this is no exception,
01:28:11 and these are the overall results after the swimming.
01:28:15 - Well, through 838 there for Zhou Cheng.
01:28:18 He starts 10 seconds ahead of Emiliano Hernandez.
01:28:21 The Mexican in second, 825,
01:28:23 gives three seconds further back for Li.
01:28:26 You see Zheng there with 823.
01:28:28 809 down there for Lin Binjiang,
01:28:30 so 29-second drop-off for him from Zhou Cheng.
01:28:35 It's still pretty close, 29 seconds.
01:28:36 You can make that up, and you can lose that
01:28:38 when it comes down to the shooting element of the Laser Run.
01:28:41 We've seen that happen for sure.
01:28:43 Marvin Dogg, 807, Valentin Belaud with 805,
01:28:46 and 800 for Giorgio Milan.
01:28:49 Miles Pillage there with 799.
01:28:52 It's very, very hard to call what's gonna happen here.
01:28:54 We know that looking at it,
01:28:56 you wanna be as close to the top end as you can
01:28:58 going into the Laser Run.
01:28:59 Some of those with some work to be done,
01:29:00 but let's have a look back of all the action there
01:29:02 we just saw from the pool.
01:29:04 (upbeat music)
01:29:07 (upbeat music)
01:29:10 (upbeat music)
01:29:13 (upbeat music)
01:29:15 (upbeat music)
01:29:18 (upbeat music)
01:29:20 (upbeat music)
01:29:49 All the action is done in the pool,
01:29:51 and you can see how quickly everyone has left
01:29:53 and made their way back outside.
01:29:55 That's exactly where the athletes have come,
01:29:57 through the insides of the building,
01:29:59 underneath that walkway there.
01:30:00 They'll come out round by the seating
01:30:02 and head towards the Laser Run.
01:30:04 You might be able to hear the cheers going up around me.
01:30:05 That is because the British athletes, unsurprisingly,
01:30:08 have made their way outside.
01:30:09 The Laser Run then is five laps of this 600-meter loop,
01:30:13 four visits to the range itself.
01:30:16 They go past on the first lap,
01:30:17 and then they must come round to it four times.
01:30:20 So the second lap and onwards,
01:30:22 hitting that target five times within 50 seconds.
01:30:25 If they don't complete it in 50 seconds,
01:30:26 well, they can continue on their way,
01:30:28 but that would be a disaster
01:30:29 when it comes to the Laser Run aspect.
01:30:32 Four visits to the range, I say.
01:30:34 So 20 times they need to hit that target.
01:30:36 They need to stay composed on the run,
01:30:38 not use up all their energy on the first couple of laps.
01:30:41 And so it is a bit of a waiting game.
01:30:43 It's almost a game of chess,
01:30:45 but it's great that we have another guest with us here.
01:30:48 And we have coming in to join us in the studio,
01:30:51 the German athlete, Rebecca Langerer.
01:30:53 It's great to see you here.
01:30:55 Thanks for joining us.
01:30:57 - Enjoyed.
01:30:59 - Well, do you know what?
01:31:00 It's an absolute pleasure to have you in here.
01:31:01 And fifth place for you earlier.
01:31:03 Started fifth in the final.
01:31:05 You finished fifth in the final.
01:31:07 I'm sure you would have liked
01:31:08 to have worked your way up the order somewhat,
01:31:10 but it was a really tough competition out there today.
01:31:12 - Yeah, it was quite hard,
01:31:13 but I'm very happy that I finished fifth
01:31:15 and didn't go all the way back.
01:31:17 (laughing)
01:31:18 - You did amazingly.
01:31:20 - What was your expectation?
01:31:21 What was your target when you were standing there
01:31:24 on the start line?
01:31:24 Just looking back here, you were 14 seconds off the lead.
01:31:29 Just give us an idea from an athlete's point of view.
01:31:32 When you're standing there on the start line
01:31:34 and you have to wait 14 seconds
01:31:36 from the first athlete going ahead of you,
01:31:38 you had Olivia Green, didn't you,
01:31:40 just going off eight seconds ahead of you there.
01:31:43 So you've got this kind of a staggered start.
01:31:44 But what is it like standing there
01:31:46 knowing that all these others
01:31:47 are kind of disappearing off into the distance?
01:31:50 - Oh, actually I had no thoughts.
01:31:52 I was just like, "I'm gonna see."
01:31:53 - So I set that question up brilliantly, I thought there.
01:31:55 (laughing)
01:31:56 - Do you know what?
01:31:57 These athletes are making you look bad now.
01:31:59 - Oh, that's easily done.
01:32:01 - No, 'cause when you're an athlete,
01:32:03 you want to focus on yourself.
01:32:04 There is a part of it.
01:32:06 I'll let you answer this, actually.
01:32:07 You go ahead.
01:32:08 - Yeah, actually I thought,
01:32:09 I just hope that there's someone I can run with.
01:32:12 And if there's such a big gap,
01:32:14 and I know I'm not the best runner,
01:32:16 I just try to stick to someone who's coming from the back.
01:32:20 And I was happy that Karinza Bryson just overtook me,
01:32:23 like, after 200 meters.
01:32:25 I was like, "Oh, finally!"
01:32:25 - You were happy that she overtook you.
01:32:27 - Yeah, because I was like,
01:32:28 "Oh, I can finally run with someone
01:32:30 "and don't have to do all this way alone."
01:32:33 - You need to pace then.
01:32:34 - Yes, because I was not in my best shape.
01:32:36 So I was like, "Oh, if I can hang on,
01:32:38 "it's easier than if I have to do all the way alone."
01:32:40 - Does that mean you don't run to a certain lap pace,
01:32:43 then you're kind of working with what's going on around you?
01:32:46 - Yeah, I think so.
01:32:48 I just start, like, average.
01:32:50 I just don't want to start too fast.
01:32:53 So I have energy 'til the end.
01:32:55 But, yeah, I don't know.
01:32:58 I just run.
01:32:59 I just run and see where it's going.
01:33:01 - It's such a unique sport, though, isn't it, Pentathlon?
01:33:03 Because we're saying before all this,
01:33:04 you know, with many other sports there,
01:33:06 it's you against other people.
01:33:07 The only time anybody else comes into the equation
01:33:10 is in the fencing.
01:33:11 And once that's done,
01:33:12 it's you against whatever discipline it happens to be.
01:33:14 So, you know, you go into the range there,
01:33:16 you're shooting, you're trying to get that fifth target hit.
01:33:20 Eddie, we've been talking about this on and off,
01:33:22 haven't we, when you're in the range
01:33:23 and it's not going to plan,
01:33:24 you miss three, you miss four, you miss,
01:33:26 you know, it keeps going.
01:33:27 How do you mentally reset each time you take a shot
01:33:30 when it's not going your way
01:33:31 and all those are moving on around you?
01:33:33 - Oh, I just try to focus on the technical parts
01:33:37 and just tell myself, "Okay, let's do this,
01:33:39 "let's do this, let's do this."
01:33:40 Like, just step by step and try to remain
01:33:43 what I do in training and then normally it works out good.
01:33:47 - Jo, the answers I was expecting you to give, actually,
01:33:50 because it's a coach's dream, isn't it, really?
01:33:52 You focus on yourself and not the others around.
01:33:55 Although we have seen sometimes,
01:33:56 we saw it earlier on, in fact, in the final.
01:33:58 I can't remember which athlete it was,
01:33:59 but they thought they'd hit the fifth target
01:34:01 and they left or they went to go
01:34:03 and then they realized they had to go back
01:34:04 and reset themselves up again.
01:34:06 So is that kind of that mental game going on?
01:34:09 What's going through these gents' minds out here?
01:34:11 What are they thinking at this moment
01:34:12 as they're going through their warm-up phase?
01:34:14 - Oh, I just, I don't know.
01:34:16 If I'm there, I'm like, "Okay, let's just try to make
01:34:20 "at least the last few good shots, make a stride,
01:34:24 "which feels quite good after swimming,
01:34:26 "and then just let's go, see where it's going."
01:34:29 - Honestly, I love her positive attitude.
01:34:31 - It's great, isn't it? - Just the way that she's
01:34:32 in the moment, living moment, and taking it step by step.
01:34:35 I love how you said also that you take the running
01:34:38 as it comes and just play around with how the field works.
01:34:42 And it's been going great for you.
01:34:44 I mean, you came in fifth today,
01:34:45 you got a medal in Ankara.
01:34:48 - Yeah, the World Cup. - Yes, you did.
01:34:49 Yeah, the World Cup.
01:34:50 So yeah, you're a very accomplished athlete already.
01:34:54 - I just try to stick with the situation
01:34:56 and not try to be like-- - Overthinking.
01:34:58 - I have to do this, I have to do that.
01:35:00 I need to go into this and this position
01:35:04 to get this and this position.
01:35:05 I don't know.
01:35:06 It's just, I do what comes and I just try to feel good.
01:35:10 - Whatever you're doing, it's working for you,
01:35:12 that's for sure.
01:35:13 Just looking outside of our beautiful tent here,
01:35:15 the studio tent we have here in Bath,
01:35:17 the conditions aren't ideal.
01:35:19 I mean, it's not raining.
01:35:21 For me, if ever I'm running, I kind of like running
01:35:23 in this sort of thing.
01:35:24 It's quite nice where it's a bit breezy,
01:35:25 it's not too sunny.
01:35:26 The conditions for yourself here over the last week,
01:35:29 have you enjoyed Bath?
01:35:31 - I did enjoy, I just didn't like that it was raining
01:35:35 during my semi-final.
01:35:37 - Yeah. - We'll pause you there
01:35:38 for a sec, we're going to the stats.
01:35:38 - Here's the stats for Mohamed El Gendy,
01:35:40 then ranked number 23 in the world.
01:35:42 He was just on the shot there, warming up.
01:35:45 Eight World Cup starts, two silvers in the World Championships
01:35:48 he would dearly love to get his hands on a gold, wouldn't he?
01:35:51 As all of the athletes would, even if they've got four
01:35:54 or five in their cupboard back home, they want some more.
01:35:57 Great to see him out in competition.
01:36:01 Mohamed El Gendy, very slight figure, the young man.
01:36:04 Fourth best overall in the Laser,
01:36:07 expecting to be extremely quick.
01:36:09 1% up compared to the average on the fencing.
01:36:12 7% up on the Laser run.
01:36:14 He is very, very rapid.
01:36:15 He's very, very impressive, and he came through
01:36:17 very, very well in his semi-final just yesterday.
01:36:21 Remember, their semi-finals were yesterday,
01:36:23 and Mohamed El Gendy's was the second semi-final
01:36:25 in the afternoon, so for him, less than 24 hours to recover.
01:36:30 That's how he earned his points, then.
01:36:31 Current results for the riding, 283,
01:36:33 fencing, 237, and swimming, 294.
01:36:36 Another one of those athletes there
01:36:37 that only really goes forwards
01:36:39 in that World Championship last year, third to second.
01:36:43 He moves his way forward.
01:36:43 He doesn't fall backwards very often, does he?
01:36:46 And you can see him getting ready for this right now.
01:36:48 He's a very brave man taking his top off
01:36:50 out here in the cold, but there you go.
01:36:52 He'll quickly put his vest on
01:36:53 and try and get himself all composed.
01:36:55 Mohamed El Gendy starting fifth,
01:36:57 just 24 seconds back from Zhou Cheng,
01:37:00 who's gonna be leading the way.
01:37:02 Yeah, conditions-wise, then,
01:37:03 as they turn their attention to this,
01:37:05 what if it starts to rain right now?
01:37:07 Does that change the game?
01:37:08 Does that change your plan?
01:37:10 - I think it depends on the athlete,
01:37:12 because some girls told me that when it started raining,
01:37:15 their muscle got more tight because it was colder,
01:37:17 and then with the wind and everything.
01:37:19 Also, for the shooting, it's quite hard
01:37:22 because the weapon, like, the grip gets wet.
01:37:26 It's not nice to hold onto it.
01:37:29 - Let's have a look, then, at Emilio Hernandez from Mexico.
01:37:32 He's currently ranked number four in the world.
01:37:34 17 World Cup starts, not as many medals as he'd like.
01:37:37 You can see a silver in the World Championships.
01:37:40 You can see a bronze down there
01:37:41 in the World Cup finals.
01:37:42 So, certainly wanted to get a few more medals to his--
01:37:46 - Yeah, again, and this medal count
01:37:49 does include individuals and relays.
01:37:50 - Yeah.
01:37:52 Fourth overall on the horse, as you can see.
01:37:54 3% under on the fencing compared to the average.
01:37:57 1% up on the swimming and 5% up on the laser run.
01:38:01 So, he's a very, very impressive laser runner,
01:38:03 and he's starting second place overall,
01:38:06 just 10 seconds back.
01:38:08 - Same as his compatriot this morning,
01:38:10 Mariana Archeo, started in second as well.
01:38:13 - Yeah, exactly.
01:38:13 She fell back, didn't she, to sixth in the end.
01:38:16 Here's his results.
01:38:18 Well, he has fallen back once, as you've seen.
01:38:21 The World Cup in Cairo started second, finished seventh,
01:38:24 like his compatriot earlier on here today.
01:38:25 In the World Cup in Cairo this year,
01:38:27 he started 12th, finished 10th.
01:38:29 And the World Cup final in Ankara,
01:38:31 he got his hands on that bronze medal, didn't he?
01:38:33 Starting seventh, but where will he finish
01:38:35 with a starting position of two?
01:38:37 - I think now would be an interesting time
01:38:40 to push Rebecca for some predictions.
01:38:43 - Okay.
01:38:43 - Let's see who are gonna be our three medalists today.
01:38:46 She just got the list of them.
01:38:47 (laughing)
01:38:48 So, take your time.
01:38:49 - Bearing in mind, there's a very British crowd here as well.
01:38:52 - Oh, very. - Rebecca, no pressure.
01:38:55 - I don't wanna say anything and then I'm wrong.
01:38:57 I think I did this in Cairo and I was completely wrong.
01:39:00 - Sorry, we've been wrong all week, so.
01:39:02 - I would've lost all my money in Cairo, so I'm not sure.
01:39:05 No, I think Joe can make a medal for sure,
01:39:09 if he's managing, because I think he had some injury
01:39:14 in his calf.
01:39:15 - Yeah, I think her calf.
01:39:17 - Yeah, something like that.
01:39:18 So I'm not sure, but I think he's always good for a sprint.
01:39:20 Doesn't matter what happens.
01:39:22 And yeah, if Anand is not, if he's hitting the target,
01:39:27 I think he can make it.
01:39:29 - He's hitting targets.
01:39:30 - No, but I think the two Egyptians
01:39:34 are really in a good shape.
01:39:36 I think they can also go forward, so also,
01:39:39 Ng Thay is really far, is really not far
01:39:43 and he can make it too.
01:39:45 Like, I really don't wanna say anything.
01:39:47 I'm scared to say something wrong.
01:39:49 - Another man in the shot there, Chaba Boum.
01:39:50 He's a long way back, 48 seconds back there
01:39:53 for the Hungarian athlete, Chaba Boum, but what can he do?
01:39:56 Rebecca, thank you very much for joining us.
01:39:59 It's a pleasure to get your thoughts.
01:40:00 Well done on your exploits earlier on today.
01:40:03 Your fifth place finish in the World Championships.
01:40:05 Hopefully we'll see you up here again.
01:40:06 - Yeah, hopefully.
01:40:07 - Good luck. - Thank you.
01:40:08 - Thank you. - Bye.
01:40:09 - Bye.
01:40:10 - Lovely to catch the thoughts there from Rebecca Langrean.
01:40:13 She wasn't, you know, wanting to put her name on the line
01:40:17 and make the prediction just there,
01:40:18 but she says Joe Chung could get it
01:40:19 if he can hit the target and Hernandez could as well.
01:40:22 And that is the way it goes with the Laser Run.
01:40:24 If they can hit the target,
01:40:25 then they could work their way up the order.
01:40:27 We see Myles Pillage.
01:40:29 He is starting down in 13th, 39 seconds off.
01:40:34 And he needs to keep his eye in.
01:40:36 So look at this, the times on the right-hand side.
01:40:38 That's the time they start behind Joe Chung.
01:40:41 So as you see between Jim Wang-Jung there from Korea
01:40:44 and Mohamed El-Ghendi, there is an 11-second delay,
01:40:48 only one second back from Mohamed Chaban.
01:40:50 They will lead pretty much together.
01:40:51 Woon Taejoon, 25 seconds back as well.
01:40:53 He'll be going alongside Chaban.
01:40:56 Ahmed El-Ghendi, 27 seconds back from Joe Chung,
01:40:58 just two seconds off the shoulder
01:41:00 of his compatriot and Woon Taejoon.
01:41:02 Lim Bin Zhang, 29 seconds back.
01:41:04 So it's all very, very congested, isn't it?
01:41:07 31 seconds back in total for Marvin Dogg.
01:41:10 We've seen these gaps get eaten up, haven't we?
01:41:13 - Yeah. - Earlier on in the semifinal,
01:41:15 earlier on in the final, in the semifinals yesterday
01:41:17 and the semifinals on Friday,
01:41:18 more Olympic rings there on the shoulders of these athletes.
01:41:23 - Woon Taejoon. - That's Woon Taejoon, yeah.
01:41:25 Woon Taejoon. - Do you know what?
01:41:26 - Bronze in Tokyo.
01:41:28 - Yeah, sorry to interrupt you there.
01:41:29 But yeah, 15 seconds isn't really a lot to make up
01:41:33 if you think about it.
01:41:34 You have five laps of 600 meters.
01:41:36 If you manage to run three seconds faster
01:41:38 than your opponent in every single lap,
01:41:40 that's basically your 15 seconds, so.
01:41:42 - But then it's all about hitting the target, isn't it?
01:41:44 You've got to hit that target.
01:41:46 - And there is, as we see here, a big cheer
01:41:49 as Zhou Cheng makes his way back inside for the final moment.
01:41:52 And you can see he had pink there on his bib.
01:41:55 And pink means he was the quickest
01:41:57 or the best scorer in the riding.
01:41:59 There's a new system in.
01:42:00 Pink means that they're the best scorer in the riding.
01:42:03 Yellow in the fencing.
01:42:04 And we have blue, meaning they're the quickest in the pool.
01:42:08 So if you're wondering why the background there
01:42:10 with the yellow vest.
01:42:11 You can just see where's he gone.
01:42:14 The numbers just disappeared.
01:42:15 - Ben Stemmeter. - Out of the shot, yeah.
01:42:16 Ben Stemmeter, that was because he got the best score
01:42:18 in the fencing ranking round.
01:42:21 - Just by simple maths, we know that Miles Pillage
01:42:28 has the blue with the best score in the swimming round.
01:42:33 - Yeah, Miles Pillage has got a certain frame
01:42:36 for swimming for sure.
01:42:37 Very broad shoulders, very athletic.
01:42:40 And we're just talking about the different shapes
01:42:42 in many, many ways.
01:42:43 Because when we look at someone like Mohamed El-Ghendi,
01:42:45 he is quite a slight.
01:42:48 He's more like a long distance runner, doesn't he?
01:42:50 Looks like maybe a marathon distance runner
01:42:55 or something like that.
01:42:56 He's very, here he is on the screen.
01:42:57 He's very, very slight.
01:42:58 Compare him to someone around him like below.
01:43:00 If you put Miles Pillage next to him,
01:43:02 he'll look, here we go.
01:43:03 As they walk past, you can see number one in his vest
01:43:07 is Joe Chung.
01:43:08 Now Joe Chung's not the biggest guy.
01:43:09 He's fairly tall, but he's not the biggest guy.
01:43:11 He looks massive compared to El-Ghendi.
01:43:15 - You know what, I think they all have different frames.
01:43:19 And El-Ghendi, I can tell you from knowing him
01:43:22 that he does spend a lot of time in the gym
01:43:23 and he does spend a lot of time into building muscle.
01:43:28 But it's different with the genetics of each athlete
01:43:31 and just the routine in general.
01:43:34 - He's supposed to put more weight on his bones.
01:43:35 He can have some of mine if he wants.
01:43:37 (laughing)
01:43:38 I'll donate it to him.
01:43:40 - We have got the athletes all into position right now.
01:43:44 We have a fantastic lineup here for the crowd to look on.
01:43:49 We know it's gonna go down to the wire.
01:43:52 Joe Chung leading the way.
01:43:53 Three Brits, three Egyptians, three Koreans, two Hungarians,
01:43:57 and then one each for Italy, Germany, France,
01:43:59 the Czech Republic, China, Mexico, and Ukraine.
01:44:02 - This is getting nervy even for us.
01:44:06 - When that music starts to build,
01:44:08 I just, I get a bit jittery.
01:44:10 - Yeah.
01:44:11 Imagine being an athlete standing on that line
01:44:13 and listening to that music.
01:44:14 But 11 minutes and we're gonna find out
01:44:16 who our new world champion is.
01:44:19 - Spikes there for Joe Chung.
01:44:20 Spikes there as well for Jimuat Jung as well.
01:44:24 So some with spikes.
01:44:25 Joe Chung takes his position and he's about to get going.
01:44:28 And he is off 10 seconds ahead
01:44:33 of Liliana Hernandez from Mexico.
01:44:35 10 seconds will get him a decent 60 meters or so.
01:44:39 - And Liliana Hernandez is out.
01:44:42 - There he goes.
01:44:43 Another slight figure, isn't he?
01:44:44 Liliana Hernandez.
01:44:45 - Third place is out.
01:44:48 - And Ji-Hun Lee and followed by Jimuat Jung.
01:44:51 And very, very quickly after, here comes Mohamed El-Ghendi
01:44:54 and over his shoulder will be Mamen Shaban and Jun Muntai.
01:44:59 Also, Ahmed El-Ghendi has left the way.
01:45:02 This is coming thick and fast.
01:45:03 Lim Bin Zhang has gone, Marvin Dogg has gone.
01:45:06 Eventan Limbalo has gone.
01:45:07 We have now got Georgia Milan out the way there.
01:45:09 Myles Pillage is off and running
01:45:11 to a big cheer from the crowd behind.
01:45:13 And it's gonna seem like an age before Chaba Boom goes away.
01:45:17 A huge cheer from the crowd
01:45:18 as now Chaba Boom is off and running.
01:45:21 Bit of a pause again for the next Hungarian.
01:45:24 That's Bence Demeter.
01:45:25 He now leaves the start line.
01:45:28 And it's gonna be, seem like another long pause.
01:45:33 - He's already up there.
01:45:34 Joe Chung has completed 300 meters.
01:45:36 - Look at that.
01:45:37 Emiliano Hernandez has closed that gap down
01:45:39 to three seconds from 10. - Yeah, he certainly has.
01:45:40 - So, nice start for him.
01:45:43 Just hoping he doesn't finish up that tank in the first stop.
01:45:47 - Martin Vlak has now left.
01:45:50 So has Charles Brown.
01:45:51 The big cheer tells you another British athlete
01:45:53 has left the way here.
01:45:54 And Roman Popov will go in five seconds time.
01:45:57 He, although has a 5.27 difference
01:45:59 because of that elimination on the horse,
01:46:01 he'll start one minute 30 back.
01:46:02 He has no chance of winning a medal there for Roman Popov.
01:46:05 But look at these two,
01:46:07 as Hernandez has gone into an early lead at the end
01:46:10 as they come around to the end of lap number one
01:46:12 and make their way to the range for the first time of four.
01:46:14 - Yeah, you know what, might not be the wisest choice,
01:46:17 but again, he knows what he's capable of
01:46:19 and he knows how to strategize this race to his advantage.
01:46:24 And both athletes are pretty much,
01:46:27 we are very early in the race.
01:46:29 - Extremely early in the race.
01:46:31 But with three Olympic medalists out there,
01:46:34 Zhou Cheng, Ahmed El-Ghendi and Shen Wun-Tai,
01:46:39 it's a competition.
01:46:39 - Look at that, three Koreans and three Egyptians.
01:46:42 - And you can see Kanye there,
01:46:43 Mohammed El-Ghendi just shaking his arm out,
01:46:46 getting himself ready.
01:46:47 Zhou Cheng trying to stay composed.
01:46:50 Four from four and 10 seconds gone there for Zhou Cheng.
01:46:53 Very, very composed.
01:46:54 Emiliano Hernandez gets underway.
01:46:56 He seems to sprint away, doesn't he?
01:46:58 Zhou Cheng more kind of a slow, slow in inverted commas,
01:47:02 the way he leaves the line.
01:47:03 But Emiliano Hernandez trying to put him under pressure.
01:47:05 I think he's trying to encourage Zhou on a bit, isn't he?
01:47:07 Trying to force Zhou to maybe pick up the pace
01:47:10 and by doing so, maybe use the energy in his tanks.
01:47:12 Maybe it's a tactic that Emiliano Hernandez has got here
01:47:15 or maybe he doesn't care what Zhou Cheng is doing
01:47:17 and is just trying to get down the line as quickly as he can.
01:47:19 - Here's the thing again about Zhou Cheng,
01:47:21 he has got one of them exploding finishes
01:47:25 and I think Emiliano Hernandez is just trying to get ahead
01:47:27 early on in the race
01:47:28 so he doesn't have to deal with that later on
01:47:30 and only time will tell,
01:47:32 but more athletes are coming off the range
01:47:34 and it's not only about those top two athletes.
01:47:38 - It's not.
01:47:38 Zhou Cheng, as you can see,
01:47:39 it looks much more relaxed, doesn't it, Zhou Cheng out there?
01:47:41 He's not doing anything stupid.
01:47:42 He's not getting on the heels of Hernandez.
01:47:44 He's not trying to catch him up.
01:47:45 He's just letting Hernandez do what he wants to do
01:47:47 and the gap currently stands at around about,
01:47:50 oh, about 20 meters out there,
01:47:52 maybe 25 meters Zhou Cheng behind.
01:47:54 - Weng Tai Chun has moved his way up four places there
01:47:58 from seventh to third now, started 25 seconds back.
01:48:01 He started just around about 14 seconds off the shoulder
01:48:05 of a third place athlete.
01:48:07 - Look at that, the chasing pack.
01:48:09 Chun Weng Tai, Mohamed El-Gindi, Ahmed El-Gindi,
01:48:11 Mohamed El-Gindi, Mohamed El-Gindi,
01:48:13 Jinghua Jun and Jihan Li.
01:48:15 This is getting nervy for me.
01:48:17 I don't know about these athletes,
01:48:19 but not only pitting yourself against your teammates,
01:48:22 but...
01:48:23 - Three Egyptians running together as you see.
01:48:29 Chun Weng Tai has just been overtaken by Mohamed El-Gindi.
01:48:33 He's got that unusual running style, doesn't he?
01:48:35 Kind of his head's nice and free as he goes.
01:48:37 Looks not as relaxed as the others because of it,
01:48:40 but he is a very relaxed running style,
01:48:41 but somehow it doesn't look that relaxed,
01:48:43 but he's so quick on the ground, Mohamed El-Gindi.
01:48:46 Hernandez is in, misses his second.
01:48:48 So all that running for him,
01:48:49 he's missed again on the second light.
01:48:51 Now he's hit three.
01:48:52 Zhou Cheng in straight away.
01:48:54 So all this exertion that Hernandez has done
01:48:57 by getting up the track as quickly as he can.
01:48:59 Well, Zhou Cheng, five from five under eight seconds.
01:49:03 Hernandez cannot get five done.
01:49:05 Now he does.
01:49:06 And he's exerted all that energy to get ahead of Zhou Cheng.
01:49:09 And Zhou Cheng just said,
01:49:10 "Okay, well, I'll eat it back, shall I?"
01:49:12 In the range.
01:49:13 - Okay, Mohamed El-Gindi out in second seconds as well.
01:49:15 Chun Weng Tai following behind.
01:49:17 We have one, two, three, four athletes out in the field.
01:49:20 Some of them struggling,
01:49:22 but four and five, Mohamed El-Gindi and El-Gindi out.
01:49:26 - I can tell you're getting excited
01:49:27 'cause you're talking faster and faster
01:49:29 because of the exploits of the Egyptian athlete,
01:49:31 Mohamed El-Gindi, alongside now,
01:49:33 just 11 seconds back from the lead.
01:49:35 Hernandez once again goes into the lead,
01:49:37 but again, it's taken him longer to close that gap
01:49:40 because of his time in the range.
01:49:42 As Mohamed El-Gindi there looks very,
01:49:44 very comfortable in third place.
01:49:46 He'll be at the top of the picture, just out of shot there.
01:49:48 In fact, just at the top of the picture now,
01:49:50 as these two lead in the way
01:49:52 after two rounds of shooting half distance, 1,500 meters.
01:49:56 They'll complete three kilometers
01:49:58 by the time they finish their five laps
01:50:00 of this 600 meter course.
01:50:02 It's not a big lead, is it,
01:50:05 that Hernandez has pulled this time around?
01:50:06 He certainly looked like he pulled a bigger lead last time,
01:50:09 but looking out there, Mohamed El-Gindi started sixth.
01:50:11 He's moved his way up there to third,
01:50:14 but look at the back.
01:50:15 You can see just the other two Egyptians
01:50:18 chasing down Jeon Moon-Tae from Korea.
01:50:21 - This is, I'm speechless at the moment.
01:50:27 Two more rounds of shooting, but it's like,
01:50:29 it's hard to predict at this moment.
01:50:34 It's all about who can keep their composure
01:50:36 in the shooting.
01:50:37 Again, Emiliano Hernandez just missing a few shots there,
01:50:41 and that did put Joseph Chung in the lead for a while,
01:50:46 but back, Emiliano Hernandez is in the lead now.
01:50:50 - They overtaken Popov.
01:50:51 It looks like they have.
01:50:52 Roman Popov has just been overtaken.
01:50:53 Yeah, lapped by him,
01:50:54 and they both go into the range pretty much together.
01:50:57 So Hernandez needs to keep composed, doesn't he?
01:50:59 Joe Chung in straight away.
01:51:00 One from one, two from two, three from three.
01:51:03 He's an Olympic champion for a reason.
01:51:05 Four from four, five from five in under eight seconds.
01:51:09 Hernandez, though, with a decent time as well.
01:51:11 Just under 10 for him,
01:51:13 and so because of that, just under eight in fact for him,
01:51:15 and that is why they're neck and neck as they leave,
01:51:17 and he gets that sprint on once again,
01:51:19 and Joe Chung not concerned by this at this stage,
01:51:22 playing his own game after three rounds of shooting,
01:51:24 but it's gonna come down to a 600 meter sprint finish
01:51:28 for the end, but Joe Chung will have it.
01:51:29 We have a battle with the two Egyptians
01:51:32 for third place right now,
01:51:34 and well, this is absolutely fascinating.
01:51:36 Three, four, five, and six,
01:51:38 only around 20 meters between them
01:51:41 with one more round of shooting to go.
01:51:43 Around about 450 meters to go of this lap,
01:51:48 and one more lap after.
01:51:50 It is very, very close.
01:51:52 Joe Chung just slightly picking up the pace now.
01:51:54 He's not allowing Emiliano Hernandez to get away from him,
01:51:58 but it looks like he's running well within himself
01:52:00 at the moment.
01:52:01 They both do, in fact, as Joe Chung
01:52:03 just has a much more kind of a relaxed style,
01:52:06 like he's not really putting the effort in.
01:52:08 - Do you know what?
01:52:09 I think if he puts up a fight with Emiliano right now,
01:52:11 they're both gonna lose fuel,
01:52:13 so it's just about pacing themselves,
01:52:15 and I think he's just on the back of him,
01:52:17 just making sure he doesn't get away,
01:52:19 but at the same time, not losing too much effort into that.
01:52:22 It looks like Ahmed El Gendy is taking back bronze.
01:52:25 - He is indeed, yeah.
01:52:27 It is Ahmed El Gendy who's moved himself up to third,
01:52:30 but it's gonna be an interesting one.
01:52:32 We think it's gonna go to Egypt, Meiji, maybe,
01:52:34 but will Wuntai Jun for Korea
01:52:36 decide to get back into the action?
01:52:37 He's there with them.
01:52:39 It's a fascinating battle for gold.
01:52:41 It's a fascinating battle for bronze.
01:52:43 - Indeed, Joe Chung just shaking out his left arm
01:52:45 a little bit as they start to approach the range.
01:52:48 The three Egyptian athletes now all running together,
01:52:50 led by Ahmed El Gendy.
01:52:52 His younger brother just two places behind him.
01:52:56 There's Mohammed El Gendy behind there.
01:52:58 And in they go to the range for the final time.
01:53:01 Joe Chung and Emiliano Hernandez,
01:53:04 one from one, two from two for Chung,
01:53:06 two from three there for Hernandez.
01:53:08 Three each now.
01:53:09 They're gonna leave at the same time.
01:53:10 Hernandez misses his fourth.
01:53:11 Joe Chung misses his fifth.
01:53:13 Oh, he's missed only one of the 20 targets, Joe Chung.
01:53:17 He is now off and running.
01:53:18 Hernandez misses the fifth.
01:53:19 This is allowing Joe Chung to get off the way.
01:53:21 He's got about 35 meters now ahead of Hernandez
01:53:26 as they head off for the final time with 450 meters to go.
01:53:31 There is Joe Chung.
01:53:32 Hernandez turns to the left-hand side.
01:53:34 We now have two Egyptians, three Egyptians up and running.
01:53:37 Mohammed El Gendy is in fifth place at the moment.
01:53:40 We'll keep an eye on third.
01:53:41 We'll keep an eye on first and second.
01:53:43 Hernandez desperately trying to close back on Joe Chung.
01:53:46 Is he gonna run out of energy though, Hernandez?
01:53:48 He's got these three Egyptians
01:53:50 and they are absolutely on it with Mohamed Shaban leading.
01:53:54 Ahmed El Gendy in second place.
01:53:57 Mohammed El Gendy in fifth place.
01:54:00 What a performance from the Egyptians.
01:54:02 And they can now see where Hernandez is.
01:54:05 He's around about 50 meters ahead.
01:54:07 I think he's too far gone for the silver medal.
01:54:10 But Joe Chung is now about 200 meters to go.
01:54:15 Hernandez starting to close it back up.
01:54:18 He's like a machine, isn't he?
01:54:19 Wearing the red vest there.
01:54:20 You can see the gap.
01:54:22 Joe Chung looks like he's running well within himself.
01:54:24 Will he get a spurt on at the end?
01:54:26 Will he cross the line?
01:54:27 It's already a sprint between these two.
01:54:29 Mohamed Shaban is there just ahead of Ahmed El Gendy.
01:54:34 And this is a sprint finish with around 150 meters to go.
01:54:38 Joe Chung is gonna take gold again
01:54:41 and retain the world championship title.
01:54:44 Over the line, Joe Chung goes.
01:54:46 He has done it, the Olympic champion.
01:54:48 Over his shoulder comes in Emilio Hernandez.
01:54:50 But what about bronze?
01:54:52 What about bronze?
01:54:53 Bronze is gonna go to Mohamed Shaban.
01:54:56 He crosses the line.
01:54:58 And fourth place to Ahmed El Gendy.
01:55:01 Fifth place is gonna go to his younger brother,
01:55:04 Mohamed El Gendy.
01:55:05 And sixth place, how about that for Wuntai Chun?
01:55:08 What a race we have just witnessed here.
01:55:12 It was a foot race between three Egyptians,
01:55:14 a foot race particularly there between Mohamed Shaban
01:55:17 and Ahmed El Gendy.
01:55:19 And it was Shaban who gets himself that bronze medal.
01:55:22 But a sprint finish throughout here.
01:55:24 And there crossing the line is Lin Bin Zhang,
01:55:26 ever so slightly ahead of Jin Hua Zheng.
01:55:29 What a great performance, even running for 11th.
01:55:31 And you see crossing the line, there's Myles Pillage.
01:55:34 I told you he's got a big frame.
01:55:35 And there he is crossing the line.
01:55:36 All of him.
01:55:37 Martin Vlach crosses the line too.
01:55:39 I think Roman Popov has still got one more lap to go
01:55:42 just out of shot.
01:55:43 But there is the reigning and still reigning world champion.
01:55:47 But those two put on a fight, didn't they?
01:55:49 Joe Chung and Emiliano Hernandez as over the line,
01:55:52 limping as Ji-Hun Lee.
01:55:53 Hopefully nothing too severe for him.
01:55:56 And next up it is Bence Demeter.
01:55:58 It all fell apart for him, didn't it?
01:56:00 When it came down to the riding element.
01:56:02 Over goes Charlie Brown.
01:56:03 He crosses in 17th.
01:56:04 Started 17th, finishes 17th.
01:56:08 Joe Chung, he's taken a lot of applauded over the years.
01:56:11 Well, he earned that one.
01:56:12 He played an absolute blinder, didn't he?
01:56:15 There is Hernandez.
01:56:17 - By the way, this is his first individual medal ever.
01:56:21 And to do it in a world championship is just amazing.
01:56:24 You can see how much this means to him.
01:56:28 - Yeah.
01:56:29 I mean, it's a brilliant, brilliant performance.
01:56:30 But he ran a superb race.
01:56:32 He lost it, didn't he, at the range.
01:56:33 We've seen that before.
01:56:35 But maybe just pressing himself too hard all the way around.
01:56:38 And Joe Chung just ate up the tarmac, didn't he?
01:56:41 Just let Hernandez do his thing.
01:56:43 Joe Chung, what a great performance.
01:56:45 He's still out there.
01:56:46 Roman Popov has got about 300 meters,
01:56:49 350 meters to go before our final athlete is through.
01:56:53 So much support for Joe Chung and all the British athletes.
01:56:58 Unsurprisingly here in Bath,
01:57:01 the home of pentathlon in Great Britain.
01:57:04 Here is Popov making his way round.
01:57:07 Well, he'll be happy with his performance here.
01:57:09 Roman Popov is only 19 years old.
01:57:12 He's ranked 163 in the world,
01:57:14 made his senior debut at the Pentathlon Challenger event,
01:57:18 coming 28th in the semifinal.
01:57:21 And he's gonna make his way round.
01:57:23 But as Mariam says, there is Emiliano Hernandez,
01:57:26 his first ever individual medal.
01:57:29 And it's a silver at a world championships.
01:57:32 Absolutely incredible.
01:57:34 I'm not sure who's got the biggest ring,
01:57:35 Joe Chung or is it Hernandez?
01:57:37 I think it might be Hernandez.
01:57:39 Here comes in Popov.
01:57:40 He'll get a big round of applause as he crosses the line.
01:57:42 A great performance, as I say,
01:57:44 for the young 19 year old athlete,
01:57:46 only making his senior debut this year.
01:57:49 Got a good future, big wave.
01:57:51 Crossing the line, he gets his own round of applause.
01:57:53 And they'll be loving it, savoring the moment there
01:57:56 as Roman Popov crosses the line.
01:57:58 We have had two absolutely spectacular finals here today.
01:58:02 The women's earlier on,
01:58:04 and not outdone the men this afternoon.
01:58:08 Incredible work.
01:58:09 Alina Micheli from Italy getting gold in the women's.
01:58:14 And that man, Joe Chung,
01:58:16 when he puffed his cheeks out at the start,
01:58:18 it was the same face puffing his cheeks out
01:58:20 at the end as well.
01:58:21 He started 10 seconds ahead of Emiliano Hernandez.
01:58:25 And what a show the Mexican put on for us,
01:58:29 chasing him down from the very, very off.
01:58:30 It was a sprint start, wasn't it, for Hernandez?
01:58:33 - It was, yeah.
01:58:34 It was, again, equally as amazing
01:58:36 as the women's final this morning,
01:58:38 and just as dramatic.
01:58:40 - He caught him on the first lap, didn't he?
01:58:42 Overtook him on the first lap.
01:58:43 Joe Chung wasn't sucked in by it, though.
01:58:45 He just...
01:58:46 - That's the difference between, I think,
01:58:48 an experienced athlete and one that's not,
01:58:50 I'm not gonna say new to the game,
01:58:51 'cause Emiliano Hernandez has been doing this a lot as well,
01:58:54 but kind of strategizing where you are in the race
01:58:59 will probably just, yeah,
01:59:02 that you'd know where you're gonna end this race as well.
01:59:04 And I think Joseph Chung has had enough experience
01:59:07 in that area to know that if he just held onto Emiliano,
01:59:11 not tried to go too fast, push him faster,
01:59:14 so his energy would be all expended in the first lap.
01:59:22 - Yeah, he did well of managing his race
01:59:24 and came in gold in front of his home crowd.
01:59:28 He is no stranger to that gold medal.
01:59:31 - He's not.
01:59:32 He knows how to step up to the top step of the podium.
01:59:34 That is for sure.
01:59:35 Emiliano Lopez looked so, so happy, didn't he?
01:59:37 I mean, the big grin on the Mexican's face
01:59:41 tells a big, big story.
01:59:43 - Do you know what?
01:59:44 We don't have the results in just yet,
01:59:46 but I can tell you that the Egyptian team
01:59:49 is probably gonna take the gold for the team competition.
01:59:54 They came in third, fourth, and fifth,
01:59:56 which is pretty impressive.
01:59:57 - Very, very impressive.
01:59:59 Emiliano Hernandez has scored an individual medal of bronze
02:00:01 and anchor at the World Cup Final in 2023.
02:00:03 This is his first ever silver
02:00:05 and his first ever medal in the World Championships.
02:00:08 And he looked ecstatic with it, didn't he?
02:00:10 He's now got his second ever individual
02:00:12 and his second individual of this 2023 season.
02:00:15 But the expression on his face,
02:00:16 you think it's his first ever medal of all time.
02:00:19 The Mexican athlete, very, very impressive.
02:00:22 And Joe Chung, well, I mean, he only missed one target
02:00:26 out of the full 20 in those four visits,
02:00:28 those five targets each time,
02:00:30 and that allowed him to start pulling that gap.
02:00:32 And there goes Hernandez.
02:00:33 Kept his cool, didn't he, Hernandez?
02:00:34 But by that time,
02:00:36 Joe Chung was well off from running down the line.
02:00:39 - Yeah, and if you wanna take an athlete as an example,
02:00:42 I think Joe Chung would be the best example.
02:00:46 He and Elena Micheli, what they do have in common
02:00:49 is that they do manage their shooting really well,
02:00:52 and that's what takes it to the end for them.
02:00:55 And yeah, just a great day for those two.
02:00:59 - A big smile as he goes across the line.
02:01:01 I mean, if I look at Joe Chung's face there,
02:01:03 he looked like it was easy, didn't he?
02:01:04 He just made it light work in the end of Emiliano Hernandez,
02:01:08 but Hernandez put in a really good show.
02:01:09 Silver medal at a World Championships.
02:01:12 Only ever got a bronze before,
02:01:13 only once has he got a medal before individually,
02:01:15 and that was earlier in the year,
02:01:17 and that was a bronze medal.
02:01:18 So he takes the finish line take there.
02:01:21 Joe Chung will probably add that to his collection.
02:01:24 Big embrace.
02:01:27 Another medal to add to his collection.
02:01:29 Is anyone really able to stop him?
02:01:31 It's not been the best season for Joe Chung,
02:01:34 but it ends on a high in this senior season.
02:01:36 Joe Chung winning the way,
02:01:38 getting the gold medal here
02:01:39 in the World Championships in Bath.
02:01:42 Emiliano Hernandez coming home in second.
02:01:43 Mohamed Chabanne in bronze medal position,
02:01:47 followed by Ahmed El-Ghendi,
02:01:48 a real sprint finish for the end.
02:01:49 Just ran out of juice, didn't he, with 50 meters to go.
02:01:52 Mohamed El-Ghendi on his shoulder,
02:01:53 coming home in fifth place.
02:01:54 Woon Taejum from Korea in sixth.
02:01:57 Well done to Chaba Boom,
02:01:58 who worked his way up the order in seventh.
02:02:01 And Valentin Beleau from France.
02:02:03 Marvin Dogg there, finishing in ninth place,
02:02:06 working our way back down the order a little bit.
02:02:09 We've got the medal presentation coming for you
02:02:11 very, very soon, so stay tuned for that one.
02:02:14 But what a performance.
02:02:17 Let's hear, shall we, from our medalists then,
02:02:20 who are down there talking to Heather.
02:02:22 - Well, I am joined by Mohamed Chabanne,
02:02:25 the new bronze medalist at this World Championships.
02:02:29 You just gave us a very exciting race.
02:02:32 Can you talk me through that final couple of laps
02:02:34 on the Laser Run?
02:02:36 - The Laser Run is too hard today
02:02:38 because we have like Woon Taejum and Ghandi's team.
02:02:42 They are so strong in the Laser Run.
02:02:44 And today my competition is not very good in the riding.
02:02:49 Even in the fencing, it's not very good.
02:02:51 I'm so happy to have the bronze today.
02:02:55 - And it looked as though you were having a fight,
02:02:58 a battle with your teammates from Egypt.
02:03:01 You know how strong they are.
02:03:03 When did you think that you could be the best Egyptian
02:03:06 and win that bronze medal?
02:03:07 - Before the race, I think that I can't win them,
02:03:11 but here's my coach.
02:03:12 He believed in me and he told me like, "You can.
02:03:15 "You were trying in the training
02:03:20 "and we have so strong in the shooting."
02:03:24 And he believed in me and I can.
02:03:25 - So your coach believed in you.
02:03:28 You started with number six on your vest
02:03:30 that we can see now.
02:03:31 When did you believe in this race
02:03:34 that that medal was going to be yours?
02:03:36 - Till the end of the race, we can't imagine who will win.
02:03:40 The last shooting, I think me and Ahmed El-Ghandi
02:03:43 and Mohammed El-Ghandi go with us.
02:03:45 We have a strong finish.
02:03:47 We can't imagine who will win before the race.
02:03:51 - And it's wonderful to see Egypt doing so well
02:03:54 in this final.
02:03:55 How much does that help you having strong teammates?
02:03:58 - Yeah, I think now we are the strong team.
02:04:02 My coach of the Egyptian team, he can told you about this.
02:04:06 - Can I ask you very quickly, Yasser?
02:04:09 - I just want to say that I believed in the whole team.
02:04:11 I think when you have strong competition internally,
02:04:15 it gets everyone to work harder,
02:04:17 to try to work out of the box,
02:04:18 to try to work on the small details.
02:04:20 I think the three of them are great.
02:04:21 The three of them have a chance.
02:04:23 The competition is still going
02:04:25 till the end of the qualification next year.
02:04:27 So I wish them all the best of luck.
02:04:29 And I hope, I ask God,
02:04:30 that the ones who are completely ready before the Olympics
02:04:34 is the one who will get the spot from the three of them.
02:04:36 Thank you very much.
02:04:37 - Well, that's just showing just how tight the competition
02:04:39 is to get to the Olympic Games as well.
02:04:41 But for now, congratulations on your bronze medal
02:04:44 and well done for you guys as a team.
02:04:46 - Thank you so much.
02:04:46 I need to thank the University of Bath.
02:04:49 The competition is very good.
02:04:52 Thank you.
02:04:52 - Thank you very much.
02:04:53 Well done.
02:04:54 (audience applauding)
02:04:55 - Great stuff there from Mohamed Shaban.
02:04:58 A very, very strong performance.
02:05:00 He's had a great season.
02:05:01 Gold anchor in the World Cup,
02:05:02 silver in Budapest in the World Cup.
02:05:04 He had a gold in the World Cup final,
02:05:06 a bronze here as well.
02:05:07 Let's go back down and hear the thoughts
02:05:09 of some more athletes who are down there talking to Heather.
02:05:11 - We're on.
02:05:15 Well, I am now joined by our new silver medalist
02:05:19 from these World Championships, Emiliano Hernandez.
02:05:22 You kept us on the edge of our seat for that race.
02:05:25 An incredible running.
02:05:27 Talk us through your laser run at the end.
02:05:29 - Well, first of all, congrats to Chunk
02:05:32 and thanks so much for all Bath
02:05:34 to having us in this competition.
02:05:36 The public was amazing.
02:05:37 I just can say thank you.
02:05:38 It was really interesting to have so much people
02:05:41 shouting and supporting Chunk.
02:05:44 So I was very happy about that.
02:05:46 - Did you feel the pressure from that,
02:05:47 from that home crowd cheering Joe Chung on so much
02:05:50 and every time you missed,
02:05:51 there was maybe a bit more silence.
02:05:54 How did you deal with that?
02:05:55 - Yeah, when shooting Siri, he shot, I think, five of five.
02:05:59 I was four green lights.
02:06:00 I listened to everyone shouting
02:06:03 and I was like, "Oh, come on, I want to go."
02:06:05 And it was really, really a good competition
02:06:07 from everyone, I think.
02:06:09 - And just rewind a little bit through the day.
02:06:11 What was your best performance today,
02:06:13 do you think, that actually made the biggest impact
02:06:15 on you winning that silver?
02:06:17 - I think the overall,
02:06:19 I think we started good in our riding event.
02:06:21 My coach told me it was key moment of the day
02:06:24 and at the end, keeping the composure
02:06:27 and the intelligence to have a big fight.
02:06:30 - And what does this silver medal mean to you?
02:06:33 - First of all, Paris 2024.
02:06:36 I'm really happy we worked that
02:06:37 and teamwork that is my family, my coaches, my girlfriend.
02:06:41 So really, a lot of work.
02:06:44 - Well, you've obviously done that work.
02:06:45 You've had that support.
02:06:47 You've just mentioned a few people,
02:06:48 but is there anyone else you just want to thank
02:06:49 or round up or anything you want to say
02:06:51 to anybody at home watching?
02:06:53 - Can I say it in Spanish?
02:06:55 (speaking in Spanish)
02:06:59 (speaking in Spanish)
02:07:02 - Well, congratulations on your silver medal.
02:07:06 Go and celebrate.
02:07:07 We'll see you on the podium very shortly.
02:07:08 - Thanks so much, have a good day.
02:07:09 Thanks so much, crowd.
02:07:10 - I don't speak the same language, but contentos.
02:07:15 There are things,
02:07:16 and he must be content with his day's work.
02:07:18 The world number four now qualifies for Paris 2024 as well.
02:07:23 He'll be absolutely over the moon.
02:07:24 I'm not sure if he'll even get on a plane to fly home.
02:07:27 He could probably do it by flapping his arms, couldn't he?
02:07:29 Well, here comes the Olympic champion,
02:07:32 before going into this,
02:07:33 the reigning champion for the world championships.
02:07:36 Well, he retains it, doesn't he?
02:07:37 Here he is, Zhou Cheng.
02:07:38 - Zhou Cheng, in front of a home crowd,
02:07:43 you just gave us an absolutely delightful race.
02:07:45 I mean, you kept us on the edge of the seats.
02:07:47 When did you start to think
02:07:49 that you actually had this under control,
02:07:51 or did you from the start?
02:07:52 - I definitely didn't have it under control from the start.
02:07:56 To be honest, about three weeks ago,
02:07:57 I wasn't sure if I'd be even competing.
02:08:00 I tore my car five weeks ago
02:08:01 and had a bit of a rocky buildup.
02:08:02 So I'm absolutely speechless
02:08:05 that I ended up winning this competition, to be honest.
02:08:08 Yeah, no, the crowd has been absolutely amazing.
02:08:10 And thank you everyone so much for coming.
02:08:12 It's been one of my favorite competitions I've ever done.
02:08:15 - Well, that is saying something for an Olympic champion,
02:08:17 to be able to say that.
02:08:18 And obviously we're one year out from the Games.
02:08:20 What is your plan going forward with this?
02:08:22 You know, you're in great form.
02:08:24 We're seeing you reigning in this event at the moment.
02:08:27 What comes next for you?
02:08:28 - Well, first a couple of beers tonight, I think.
02:08:32 But then it's going to be, yeah,
02:08:38 we've got a couple of weeks off
02:08:39 and then sort of head down and crack on
02:08:41 with working on the things I need to improve on
02:08:44 for next year.
02:08:45 Obviously, like last Olympic cycle before Tokyo,
02:08:47 I was in a similar position going into it, world number one,
02:08:50 and then COVID hit.
02:08:51 So I'm quite keen not to get too far ahead of myself.
02:08:55 But yeah, no,
02:08:55 things are looking really good for next season.
02:08:57 - And it does sound like there's quite a few people
02:08:58 willing to join you for that beer later on.
02:09:01 And you've already alluded to the fact that
02:09:03 this has been your,
02:09:04 probably your favorite ever competition.
02:09:06 How much difference does it make having that crowd?
02:09:08 We saw obviously Corenzo winning the bronze earlier
02:09:09 and being uplifted from the crowd.
02:09:11 What has that done to help you today?
02:09:14 - Yeah, it's amazing.
02:09:15 It's really difficult to sort of be negative
02:09:18 and think that you're tired
02:09:18 when you've got however many hundred or thousand people
02:09:22 like screaming at you to do well.
02:09:23 So it really just keeps you in like a positive mind frame
02:09:26 and you bring the best out of yourself.
02:09:29 - Now I want to know,
02:09:30 we've been watching you obviously over the last few days
02:09:31 and you have looked cool as a cucumber
02:09:33 for every part of every discipline,
02:09:36 including when you set off on the running,
02:09:37 you look so calm.
02:09:38 Are you really that calm on the inside
02:09:40 and how are you managing to put such
02:09:42 incredible performances together back to back?
02:09:45 - I think this competition was a bit different to normal.
02:09:47 I am generally like a sort of calm, laid back kind of person
02:09:50 but especially with the sort of disrupted buildup,
02:09:53 it really took the pressure off myself.
02:09:54 I was just thinking, like, especially in the semifinal,
02:09:57 let's try and make the final,
02:09:58 we'll get a team medal at least.
02:09:59 So for them to just sort of come here with no pressure
02:10:02 and see what I can do,
02:10:03 I drew an absolutely beautiful horse
02:10:05 and that sort of set me up when a few others struggled,
02:10:08 put me in a great position.
02:10:09 And then, yeah, I just managed to hold it together
02:10:11 on all the technical events
02:10:13 where my running might've been a bit weaker than usual.
02:10:15 - Well, we have been just delighted to watch you
02:10:18 and so have all the crowds, so have the support staff.
02:10:20 Do you have any final words to say
02:10:21 for some of the support, wherever that might be?
02:10:24 - Yeah, I've got all my family and friends here.
02:10:26 So yeah, mum, dad, grandma, girlfriend, Liv,
02:10:29 thank you so much for the support.
02:10:30 I could hear you guys all the way along the home straight
02:10:33 and just thank you everyone so much for coming.
02:10:36 - Well, Joe, thank you so much
02:10:37 for displaying such wonderful performance today
02:10:39 and congratulations on becoming world champion yet again.
02:10:43 - Thank you very much.
02:10:45 - Referring to Olivia Green,
02:10:46 who didn't finish in the medals or the top six
02:10:49 for Great Britain in the women's final earlier on today,
02:10:51 but giving him the support that he needed there.
02:10:53 Joe Chung, world number two,
02:10:55 and his competition was really about, wasn't it,
02:10:58 how consistent he was.
02:11:00 Number one in the riding,
02:11:00 number two in the fencing and the ranking round,
02:11:02 came eighth in the swimming.
02:11:04 And this is how the results finished up
02:11:06 in the full 18 athletes for you.
02:11:09 Joe Chung just looked imperious.
02:11:10 He had no concerns.
02:11:11 He just seemed so calm,
02:11:13 even when Emilio Hernandez was running him down
02:11:15 the whole time there.
02:11:16 It came down to the shooting
02:11:17 and he only missed one shot out of the 20 targets,
02:11:20 Joe Chung, leading the way.
02:11:22 Fantastic performance.
02:11:23 So close there between the three Egyptian athletes there
02:11:26 for that bronze medal.
02:11:26 Ahmed El-Kendi will be very disappointed
02:11:29 that he missed out on that sprint finish
02:11:31 at the end for bronze,
02:11:31 but a very, very good day's work for him nonetheless,
02:11:35 finishing fourth.
02:11:36 But try telling that to any athlete out there.
02:11:38 Valentin Beleau in eighth, Marvin Dogg in ninth.
02:11:41 Looking further back then, Georgette Moulin.
02:11:43 Well, he finished back in 10th in the end.
02:11:46 Lim Bin Zhang in 11th.
02:11:48 Jim Hwa Jung from Korea.
02:11:49 Miles Pillage, 13th for him at the World Championship.
02:11:53 Good performance from Martin Vlack as well.
02:11:55 Ji-Hun Lee, Bence Demeter, Charlie Brown,
02:11:58 and Roman Popov with perhaps one of the biggest grins
02:12:00 I've ever seen of an athlete crossing a line
02:12:02 in a final when they're down in 18th place.
02:12:04 But he's very, very young.
02:12:05 He's very, very experienced.
02:12:07 Made his senior debut this year
02:12:08 and he's got a bright future.
02:12:10 Roman Popov, it all went away from him, didn't it?
02:12:13 Really a little bit earlier on in the competition
02:12:16 with the riding when he was in fact eliminated.
02:12:18 So you were talking to Rebecca Langrea earlier on.
02:12:21 He might be one that starts to look at the obstacle
02:12:23 as somewhere to gain the advantage on the others.
02:12:26 We have had a fantastic day of competition.
02:12:28 I'm exhausted just watching all these athletes out there.
02:12:31 Just a quick shout out, by the way,
02:12:32 to Rebecca Langrea who came in and gave a prediction.
02:12:35 She was reticent to do so, shall we say,
02:12:37 but she predicted that Zhou Chun could win a medal,
02:12:40 that Hernandez could if he could shoot properly,
02:12:42 and that one of the Egyptians was gonna cross the line
02:12:45 in the medal and she got every single one of them.
02:12:48 - Yeah, so next time predict.
02:12:49 - Predict, predict, predict.
02:12:52 We are getting ready then for the medal presentation.
02:12:55 Mariam, your thoughts on what we've just seen?
02:12:57 Because Zhou Chun just there, we saw, didn't we?
02:13:01 Doing so well out there on track
02:13:02 but looking like he was running within himself.
02:13:09 - So yeah, I think this day has wore us out,
02:13:14 but the athletes have put in the work
02:13:20 all through this weekend, made it to this day.
02:13:22 I mean, 18 athletes made it to the finals
02:13:25 and very much deserved from all of them.
02:13:29 Congratulations to our medalists
02:13:31 and this crowd that has cheered on Kernza Bryson
02:13:34 who made it into bronze and Zhou Chun who made it into gold,
02:13:38 even though he said that he wasn't ready
02:13:40 for this competition as well.
02:13:41 - Torn calf muscle five weeks ago,
02:13:44 wasn't sure if he was even gonna be able to compete here.
02:13:47 That maybe answers why he took it so easy
02:13:49 in the semifinal and just only scraped through.
02:13:51 It wasn't only scraped through, by the way,
02:13:53 it just appeared to be only scraped through
02:13:55 and that's 'cause he had crossed the line
02:13:56 with a bunch of athletes ahead of him,
02:13:58 but he was being hunted down, wasn't he?
02:14:00 But he couldn't quite get the job done
02:14:02 and made it into the final.
02:14:04 Brilliantly so, and Zhou Chun does what Zhou Chun does.
02:14:07 - Yeah, and ironically, the two athletes
02:14:10 that got gold today, Alina McKellie and Joseph Chun,
02:14:13 both said they weren't ready for this
02:14:15 and weren't expecting this, so.
02:14:18 - Heaven help us, that's what I say.
02:14:20 Look out, Olympics.
02:14:21 - Look out.
02:14:22 - There's the final senior event of the season,
02:14:25 so they can now go back and be well rested.
02:14:28 For someone, though, like maybe if we look further back,
02:14:31 so Ahmed El-Ghendi, for example,
02:14:33 Ahmed has now got to go into the winter months now
02:14:35 and that's at the end of his season.
02:14:37 He'll be very, very frustrated
02:14:38 that he crossed the line in fourth,
02:14:40 but let's just talk about Egypt for a moment.
02:14:43 There were three Egyptian athletes out there
02:14:45 and they all finished inside the top five.
02:14:48 That's amazing.
02:14:50 - That is amazing.
02:14:51 - Let's just focus on that for a second.
02:14:53 - Yeah, the Egyptian team is extremely strong,
02:14:56 one of the strongest countries in this game right now
02:15:00 and I think this is all due to all the efforts
02:15:03 done back home to get these athletes ready
02:15:05 and I can tell you from experience
02:15:09 and actual fact that they have been working really hard
02:15:14 and a lot of the coaches and the admin and the federation
02:15:18 have done so much to support these athletes
02:15:20 and they've deserved this today
02:15:22 and I think they're going to be on the podium
02:15:25 as a team taking gold.
02:15:27 - Surely, must be.
02:15:28 If you're going to get three, four, and five,
02:15:30 bronze, fourth and fifth place crossing that line,
02:15:33 surely you've got gold.
02:15:34 Just looking down the list here for the British athletes,
02:15:37 remember that there were three British athletes
02:15:40 in this final and Charlie Brown and Miles Pillage
02:15:44 did their very best but it wasn't enough
02:15:45 to get near the medal positions
02:15:47 as we carry on looking at the fans around here.
02:15:51 Lots of support for Great Britain.
02:15:54 You'd expect that being here in Bath
02:15:55 where the home of Pentathlon GB happens to be.
02:15:59 It's a very sporting area.
02:16:01 The university, a fantastic facility for sports
02:16:04 and the athletes, all the British athletes have said
02:16:06 how much they've enjoyed competing here
02:16:07 with the arena set up as it is
02:16:09 because they come and train here all the time
02:16:11 and it doesn't look like this normally.
02:16:13 - Yeah, it's always nice competing on home ground
02:16:17 and you can see fans are going crazy in the stands.
02:16:20 But yes, again, the fans and the crowd
02:16:25 and anyone who showed up today to show their support
02:16:29 was definitely a factor in both Corenza's
02:16:32 and Joe's success today.
02:16:34 Yeah, it's not easy competing in front of your home crowd
02:16:39 because it's an added pressure but also an added incentive
02:16:42 so there are both sides to it
02:16:44 but these fans have been incredible today
02:16:46 and it was amazing seeing all these younger kids
02:16:51 coming out and trying out the laser shooting
02:16:53 and yeah, it's always nice to play on home.
02:16:57 - Many of these athletes now can go back to their homes
02:17:00 and work out with their coaches,
02:17:01 their strategy to get them ready for next season.
02:17:03 Some of them looking at the points they've scored
02:17:05 over the course of the season in the different disciplines,
02:17:07 see whether it ranks them overall in the disciplines
02:17:09 because you certainly want to be up the order
02:17:12 and consistently so on each and every one
02:17:14 and we've seen where it's been won and lost,
02:17:15 you know, in the riding and the fencing,
02:17:17 with the ranking round, the bonus round
02:17:19 gets you those couple of points back
02:17:20 but if you have a shocker on the riding,
02:17:21 it just disrupts your entire competition.
02:17:24 If you have a shocker in the fencing ranking round,
02:17:25 exactly the same thing.
02:17:26 In the pool, we know it's not so much
02:17:28 of a knock-on effect there
02:17:29 as long as you bank a decent time,
02:17:31 particularly for the men there,
02:17:32 you're looking at a two minute, two minute five,
02:17:34 something like that, the women around a two 10,
02:17:36 two 15, something like that as well.
02:17:38 But then it comes down to the shooting.
02:17:41 We saw Mariana Arceo finishing sixth,
02:17:45 she started second in her semi-final
02:17:47 and that came down to the shooting element
02:17:49 not going to plan.
02:17:50 It didn't go the same way for Emilio Hernandez
02:17:52 but there were moments, I think,
02:17:54 where we were watching him
02:17:55 where it just started to get away from him
02:17:57 and he managed to find it and just hit that target.
02:18:00 I think at that final round of shooting,
02:18:03 he missed that fifth target quite a few times before
02:18:05 and that allowed Zhou Cheng to get the advantage.
02:18:07 - Yeah, you know what, I think it did allow Zhou Cheng
02:18:10 to get the advantage but also a good recovery from him.
02:18:13 I mean, if he would have let those shots get to him,
02:18:17 maybe he wouldn't have finished on the podium at all.
02:18:19 So, yeah, so recovering from the shooting is important,
02:18:24 recovering in the riding is very important as well.
02:18:26 So it's always looking ahead
02:18:28 and just forgetting what happened in the past second.
02:18:32 - I didn't really even get to see the times
02:18:34 that either any of those Egyptian athletes
02:18:37 managed to do in the range there
02:18:39 but judging by how they climbed the Ord
02:18:41 and they worked their way through.
02:18:42 - Matna Chaban, yeah, was really fast in the range.
02:18:45 - Yeah, he must have been finishing third.
02:18:46 He started sixth, he started 25 seconds off the lead
02:18:49 but only 12 seconds back off of Ji-Hun Lee
02:18:51 who finishes outside the top six.
02:18:53 The Korean is compatriot, Wu-Tong,
02:18:56 Woon-Tae Jun does in fact finish inside the top six.
02:19:01 We are ready for the medal ceremony.
02:19:03 Here come the volunteers carrying the medals
02:19:06 and the gifts as well.
02:19:08 The men's individual will be presented first of all.
02:19:15 Here come the athletes.
02:19:18 - Winning a world championship on home soil is one thing
02:19:23 but listening to your national anthem being played
02:19:26 in front of your friends and family and everyone back home,
02:19:29 that's just another kind of proud
02:19:32 and I'm sure everyone in the crowds will be singing along.
02:19:35 - Ladies and gentlemen, the medal ceremony for men's 2023
02:19:38 UIPM Modern Pentathlon World Championships.
02:19:40 - Three athletes looking relaxed but look at the face,
02:19:43 look at the grin on Miljano Nandez's face
02:19:45 from ear to ear, that grin.
02:19:47 - Francesco Riccibitti, ASOIF president.
02:19:50 - Here are the--
02:19:51 - UIPM executive board member for sport, Dr. Vyacheslav
02:19:55 Malyshev, UIPM executive board member for development.
02:19:59 The gifts and flowers will be presented by Esther Britton,
02:20:03 deputy director and head of major events at UK Sport
02:20:06 and Professor Ian White, Vice Chancellor
02:20:08 at the University of Bath.
02:20:11 - Professor Ian White, the Vice Chancellor here
02:20:13 at the University of Bath, also there to present the--
02:20:15 - Representing Egypt, Mahan Shaban.
02:20:16 - Here we go, bronze medal, Mahan Shaban steps up.
02:20:21 Onto the podium to collect his very shiny prize
02:20:25 and what a season he's had.
02:20:30 I mentioned just the medal hall he's had this season,
02:20:33 four medals this season for the 23 year old Egyptian athlete,
02:20:38 ranked number one in the world.
02:20:42 (orchestral music)
02:20:45 - So a moment of pride there for Mahan Shaban
02:20:56 as he is once again on the podium.
02:20:59 - And the winner of the silver medal representing Mexico,
02:21:02 - Big smile on the face of--
02:21:03 - Emiliano Hernandez.
02:21:04 - Mahan Shaban who had his work cut out,
02:21:06 he had to race very, very hard against his compatriots.
02:21:08 - There goes Emiliano Hernandez from Mexico.
02:21:12 The biggest grin of all.
02:21:16 Very happy man indeed, holding that silver medal.
02:21:23 I think it's gonna be quite a while before he gets down
02:21:37 from wherever he's gone to,
02:21:38 Cloud Nine he's on right now,
02:21:40 he's somewhere amongst the stars,
02:21:42 that's for sure, Emiliano Hernandez.
02:21:45 And here he comes then, the champion from last year,
02:21:49 the world championships and again in 2023,
02:21:53 representing Great Britain, Joseph Chung,
02:21:55 the Olympic champion.
02:21:57 Was there ever any doubt?
02:22:00 Yes, I think is the answer, but he did it
02:22:05 and he did it with an almost perfect performance
02:22:09 in the laser run, an almost perfect performance
02:22:11 in the entire competition really,
02:22:13 in fact you have to say,
02:22:15 once he got through to the final,
02:22:16 first in the riding, second in the fencing
02:22:17 in the ranking rounds, gaining four extra points
02:22:20 in the bonus round, eighth in the swimming
02:22:22 with a time of 202.44 and then crossing the line
02:22:25 crucially in that first place,
02:22:31 the world champion and the Olympic champion, Joe Chung.
02:22:35 He's very much used to this
02:22:40 and he's used to the national anthem
02:22:42 that's about to play out,
02:22:43 so Joe Chung will turn to the right
02:22:47 as we have the national anthem.
02:22:49 - World champion, we present the national anthem
02:22:52 of Great Britain.
02:22:54 - Great Britain.
02:22:54 (orchestral music)
02:22:59 (orchestral music)
02:23:02 (orchestral music)
02:23:05 (orchestral music)
02:23:08 (orchestral music)
02:23:16 (orchestral music)
02:23:33 (orchestral music)
02:23:36 - Ladies and gentlemen, please one more time,
02:23:40 your applause for our medalist.
02:23:41 - A huge cheer goes up around the arena here
02:23:45 for Joe Chung, what a performance once again.
02:23:49 He keeps on writing it, doesn't he?
02:23:50 He writes his own story and Joe Chung adds another medal,
02:23:54 another well-deserved medal to his ever-growing cabinet.
02:23:58 He's gonna have to buy another one soon
02:24:00 because that one's run out of space.
02:24:02 What a performance.
02:24:04 - Yeah, never tired of hearing his own national anthem play.
02:24:08 That's for sure.
02:24:09 - He actually has, if you look at his top there,
02:24:14 he's not wearing his own top, it's got an MP on there.
02:24:18 - That's Miles Pillage's top.
02:24:19 - He's wearing Miles Pillage's top there.
02:24:22 No one will notice, they'll fix that later on in the edit.
02:24:25 - We're gonna call it Modern Pentathlon MP.
02:24:28 - That's what it is, Modern Pentathlon,
02:24:29 the master of Pentathlon.
02:24:32 (laughing)
02:24:34 They've probably done a swap there
02:24:37 and that's why he's got it on.
02:24:38 Miles saying, "Look, can I have your top at the end?"
02:24:40 And Jason, "Oh, go on then, do a swap at the end."
02:24:42 Like football players do when they swap shirts.
02:24:44 Miles done it with Joe Chung.
02:24:46 - He's gonna have to switch out though
02:24:47 'cause that team's gonna go up on the podium
02:24:50 for the team results.
02:24:51 - Yeah, well, I bet you he doesn't.
02:24:52 Not even sure Joe Chung's remembered
02:24:56 that he's changed his top there,
02:24:58 but Miles will be keeping Joe's one for sure,
02:25:01 maybe get him to sign it and it'll be on eBay
02:25:03 in a few weeks' time.
02:25:05 I'm sure he'd keep it, he'll get it framed.
02:25:07 But there you go, Joe Chung.
02:25:08 Many people look at Joe Chung as a hero in this sport,
02:25:11 don't they?
02:25:12 Many people look up to him as somebody to try and emulate
02:25:14 and talking through to someone like Mariana Arceo yesterday
02:25:17 and the day before, she was saying that he and Woon Taejoon
02:25:20 are two of her big idols, her big heroes in the sport.
02:25:23 - Rightfully so, I mean, that man has accomplished a lot
02:25:26 and just his demeanor throughout everything
02:25:28 and how he carries himself outside of the sport
02:25:31 as well is something that everyone else around him
02:25:34 aspires to be.
02:25:35 And yeah, just an amazing idol for anyone to have,
02:25:39 Mariana Arceo, I'd say half more than,
02:25:43 I think the whole stadium here has Joseph Chung,
02:25:47 he has their poster hung up off the wall or something.
02:25:50 - I think you're right, I think you're right, there you go.
02:25:52 Yeah, someone like, well, maybe Hernandez will have it
02:25:56 as a dartboard, just 'cause they're looking to try
02:25:58 and take him down when it comes to the events
02:26:01 starting next year.
02:26:02 He is held in such high esteem as Joe Chung
02:26:04 and rightfully so, as we say.
02:26:05 He hasn't had the best season by his own standards.
02:26:08 He only got silver only at the World Cup final in Ankara.
02:26:12 He got silver in the European Games in 2022,
02:26:15 fourth at the World Cup in Seville 2023.
02:26:17 So he's not had the greatest year in his career,
02:26:19 but he finishes very much on a high, doesn't he?
02:26:22 By securing the gold medal at the World Championships,
02:26:26 the final senior events.
02:26:28 - Well, he makes an appearance where it matters most.
02:26:30 - Yeah, he does, he shows up when it's required,
02:26:32 that is for sure.
02:26:33 And they're getting ready for the men's team.
02:26:39 - We are suspecting that Egypt are gonna take gold.
02:26:42 It's a matter of silver and bronze,
02:26:43 and I think it's between Great Britain and Korea.
02:26:46 - I can tell you're expecting it
02:26:47 'cause you haven't sat down for a while,
02:26:48 now you've been standing up for the whole time.
02:26:50 You're just expectant, you can't wait, can you?
02:26:51 - Do you know what, I'm impartial.
02:26:53 I'm just tired of sitting down all day,
02:26:56 but yeah, it was amazing watching these afties
02:27:00 do what they do and bringing you commentary
02:27:02 of this amazing day and this entire week in general.
02:27:06 So yeah, just excitement and relief
02:27:10 and a bunch of mixed emotions.
02:27:12 - All we really want is a grandstand finish
02:27:15 with these events and a really top level of competition,
02:27:17 and we have been dealt that on a platter and more so today.
02:27:22 The semifinal earlier on, Elena Micheli from Italy
02:27:25 winning that gold, Alicia Sotero winning the silver.
02:27:28 Remember, she only gave birth last year.
02:27:30 She's gonna go back home to her daughter.
02:27:32 I'm sure there'll be a few tears
02:27:33 when she gets back home as well, back to her family.
02:27:35 And Corenza Bryson from Great Britain.
02:27:37 I thought she was gonna break down in tears
02:27:39 during her interview with Heather Fell,
02:27:42 not because the questions were harsh or anything like that,
02:27:44 but for the pure emotion that she was
02:27:47 just sort of dishing out amazing stuff
02:27:50 from all three of those crossing the line
02:27:52 in gold, silver, and bronze.
02:27:53 Here today, we mentioned it so many times,
02:27:55 with Zhou Cheng on gold, Emiliano Hernandez from Mexico.
02:27:59 Ranked number four in the world, Hernandez.
02:28:01 So the good season, it was a very good season
02:28:04 by his own standards.
02:28:06 Qualifying as well for Paris 2024.
02:28:08 That also explains why his grin is just so big.
02:28:11 And Mohamed Chabban in that bronze position,
02:28:14 the world number one.
02:28:15 - Do you know what, the seniors might be over,
02:28:17 but a couple of people on this list
02:28:19 are gonna be joining us in two weeks' time in Lithuania
02:28:22 for the junior world champs,
02:28:23 the likes of Charles Brown from Great Britain
02:28:26 and Mohamed Higinzi.
02:28:28 Two young athletes and their season's not over yet,
02:28:32 so maybe even Roman Popov, as you are pointing out.
02:28:37 - Yeah, 19 year old, yeah, I don't know.
02:28:38 Yeah, yeah, so the season isn't over entirely,
02:28:41 but for the seniors, this is their last level of,
02:28:43 last event of competition anyway.
02:28:45 We are just waiting for them all to arrive
02:28:49 for this team's medal presentation.
02:28:54 It's getting colder and colder outside.
02:28:57 I can feel the temperature here.
02:28:59 It's hard to know, end of August
02:29:03 feels a bit more like the midst of December.
02:29:05 It's very, very cold out here.
02:29:07 - It's not that cold.
02:29:08 - All right, it's not that cold, but it is quite cold.
02:29:10 Painting a picture here,
02:29:13 using the colours that aren't quite right.
02:29:15 - Do you know what, I love this bird's eye view
02:29:16 that we've got here in Bath.
02:29:18 I don't think we've ever had that,
02:29:20 and you can see the running course marked out in there.
02:29:24 - And actually yesterday, they were moving the course
02:29:26 ever so slightly, around about half a metre off to one side,
02:29:28 because as the athletes run this one route,
02:29:31 they wear the grass out, so they moved it across
02:29:33 around about half a metre or so,
02:29:35 just to give them some fresh grass to run on.
02:29:38 And well, Zhou Cheng made use of that.
02:29:41 You can actually see where some of the grass was born down.
02:29:45 - Yeah, so that'll recover, ready for the
02:29:48 the Bath University athletes to head back out there
02:29:52 when they return to action.
02:29:54 In just a couple of weeks' time,
02:29:57 when all the students return to this amazing campus here
02:30:00 in Somerset, in the West Country here in England.
02:30:03 Looks to me-- - Do you know what?
02:30:05 Yeah, sorry, do you, go ahead.
02:30:07 - I'm just looking there,
02:30:08 you can see the volunteers are all ready.
02:30:09 You can see the athletes are now standing
02:30:11 on the left-hand side in their team tracksuits, ready to go.
02:30:16 And after this, they'll probably have to go
02:30:19 and do a warm-down, won't they?
02:30:21 - They are.
02:30:21 - So it's not over for them, no, never done.
02:30:23 You think-- - You can go run
02:30:26 your 4K with them and see how that goes,
02:30:28 even when they're warming down.
02:30:29 I don't think you--
02:30:30 (laughing)
02:30:31 - Don't be so cruel.
02:30:32 Almost as cold as the temperature outside, that was.
02:30:37 I went for a run around here yesterday,
02:30:40 and they were absolutely blitzing past me.
02:30:42 I felt very, very--
02:30:43 - Insecure?
02:30:45 - Very, yeah, mildly insecure, yeah.
02:30:47 But okay, I was hoping they'd take one look at me
02:30:50 and have fear that I might be entering pentathlon.
02:30:53 Laser on maybe, I might give that a go.
02:30:56 - Why don't you?
02:30:57 - Why don't I, indeed?
02:30:58 There is Dr. Klaus Schurmann, the UIPM president,
02:31:02 ready for this men's team presentation,
02:31:07 along with the other esteemed guests.
02:31:10 And here come the athletes,
02:31:11 and it is Egypt in number one position.
02:31:14 - The medals will be presented by--
02:31:15 - We're all squeezing to the podium.
02:31:17 - They are, aren't they, indeed?
02:31:17 - To the podium.
02:31:18 - Together with Kuma Afe, who is the ORI member--
02:31:20 - And in fact, you can see just here,
02:31:21 the difference between Myles Pillage and Mohamed El-Gendi.
02:31:24 You can see, I was saying, there is a difference
02:31:25 in the size of these athletes, for sure.
02:31:27 - UIPM executive board member, AMPC president,
02:31:31 and Yasser Hefny, UIPM executive board member--
02:31:34 - Here is the lineup of--
02:31:35 - And athletes chairman.
02:31:37 - What are presenters, now?
02:31:38 - All the presenters, Yasser Hefny there,
02:31:39 the UIPM executive board member
02:31:41 and athletes committee chairman,
02:31:43 on the second to right-hand side of your screen.
02:31:46 - And Athlon GB board member.
02:31:47 And the winners of the bronze medal,
02:31:52 representing Republic of Korea--
02:31:54 - Time for the medals, then.
02:31:55 - Lee Ji-hun, Jung Jin-hwa, and Jun Wong-Tae.
02:31:59 (audience applauding)
02:32:02 - Ji-hun Lee, Jung-won Jung, and Jun Wong-Tae as well.
02:32:09 The three Korean athletes up on the podium.
02:32:11 Bronze medal for them as a team.
02:32:13 Their exploits here today, well-deserved, too.
02:32:18 They're a tough bunch, aren't they?
02:32:20 - They are, yeah. - They are very,
02:32:21 very impressive.
02:32:22 They'll keep on bringing it, won't they?
02:32:25 They're never gonna give up.
02:32:26 They're gonna keep on going, keep on going,
02:32:28 and why wouldn't you?
02:32:30 Olympic bronze medal among them there.
02:32:32 World number six in the world, Jung-won Jung.
02:32:34 - Do you know what?
02:32:36 We have all three Olympic medals
02:32:38 on the podium right now.
02:32:39 - Yeah. - Wong-Tae Chun,
02:32:41 with his team in third, and Joseph Chung,
02:32:43 the gold medalist in second place with his team,
02:32:47 and Ahmad El-Gindi, the silver medalist
02:32:49 in first place with team Egypt.
02:32:51 - I think it'll be nice for the Egyptian three there
02:32:53 to make their way up onto that podium
02:32:55 and celebrate together, because finishing
02:32:57 in bronze position in fourth and fifth
02:32:59 collectively as a nation, and pushing each other on
02:33:02 the way they did was remarkable.
02:33:03 Before we get to that, though, Charles Brown,
02:33:07 Miles Pillage, and Joe Chung there,
02:33:09 celebrating the bronze medal for Charles Brown.
02:33:12 This would be a lovely moment, wouldn't it, for him?
02:33:14 - Yeah, absolutely.
02:33:17 Looks like Miles Pillage had to borrow a jacket
02:33:20 for somebody else, 'cause--
02:33:20 - They've all got different tops on.
02:33:21 - Joseph Chung has taken his, but yeah,
02:33:26 they're barely fitting onto the podium.
02:33:27 Shows you the size of these athletes.
02:33:30 - Look at whose top it is he's got.
02:33:36 - As they go, very broad shoulders of Miles Pillage.
02:33:40 Very, very impressive in the pool, isn't he?
02:33:42 As is Joe Chung, the standard of swimming
02:33:44 in the British team is as we expect it to be.
02:33:48 We're gonna get a vase of water straight after this,
02:33:56 I'm sure, put those straight into the water.
02:33:58 Nice sniff of the flowers there for Charles Brown.
02:34:01 I'm not sure which shirt's difficult to give them,
02:34:04 'cause they've got the wrong tops on.
02:34:06 - The 2023 UIPM Modern Pentathlon World Champions
02:34:13 and winners of the gold medal,
02:34:15 representing Egypt, Mohamed El-Kendi, Ahmed El-Kendi
02:34:20 and Mohamed Shaban.
02:34:21 - They pushed each other across the line.
02:34:23 They had a fantastic battle between them for bronze.
02:34:26 So you're always gonna have somebody lose out.
02:34:29 It was Mohamed Shaban that got the bronze medal,
02:34:31 but collectively they are in gold place there.
02:34:35 The Egyptian pair of Mohamed Shaban, Ahmed El-Kendi
02:34:39 and his brother, Mohamed El-Kendi.
02:34:41 That must be really nice of them both as well
02:34:42 to be sharing the same podium.
02:34:44 - Yeah, I mean, they're brothers and it's always nice
02:34:48 to see them lifting each other up
02:34:50 and they are competitive in the field,
02:34:52 but at the same time,
02:34:54 they are very much supporting one another.
02:34:57 And so it is actually wonderful to see.
02:35:00 - Yeah, absolutely, Mohamed El-Kendi,
02:35:02 very much the quieter one of the brothers.
02:35:05 - Do you know they're both quiet?
02:35:06 - Well, Ahmed El-Kendi, yeah, he was more of a talker though
02:35:09 when I was chatting to them,
02:35:10 but they are both very, very nice lads
02:35:12 and very well done to them.
02:35:14 Good to see a big smile on all three's face.
02:35:17 That was a tough, tough final for them.
02:35:20 Only one of those Egyptian athletes of the trio
02:35:23 being able to get a medal.
02:35:24 But at this stage, they've all got their gold medals
02:35:28 around their necks.
02:35:30 And although that final will be fresh in their minds,
02:35:33 the fact they can share this moment together
02:35:35 is a pretty remarkable thing.
02:35:38 So just pose for the cameras.
02:35:43 And now here is the Egyptian national anthem.
02:35:48 - Ladies and gentlemen,
02:35:49 in honour of our new UIPM World Champions,
02:35:52 we present the national anthem of Egypt.
02:35:54 (triumphant music)
02:35:59 (triumphant music)
02:36:02 (triumphant music)
02:36:05 (triumphant music)
02:36:22 (triumphant music)
02:36:25 (triumphant music)
02:36:44 (triumphant music)
02:36:46 - Ladies and gentlemen, please one more time,
02:36:54 your applause for our medalists.
02:36:56 - Well, that was a lovely moment,
02:36:57 not just for you to witness the Egyptian athletes
02:37:01 there in the gold position on the podium,
02:37:02 but for me as well,
02:37:03 also listening to Mariam Ahmed next to me,
02:37:06 singing to her heart's content
02:37:08 as the Egyptian national anthem plays out
02:37:10 across this arena here in the West country in England.
02:37:14 We've had the men's team medals now dished out.
02:37:21 We have one more to go as they all pose for the cameras.
02:37:26 Big, big smiles on their faces.
02:37:28 Men's top coach.
02:37:30 - Yeah, so Egypt took first,
02:37:32 which means an Egyptian coach
02:37:34 will be on that podium momentarily,
02:37:36 accepting the award for the best coach
02:37:38 with the best team of this year.
02:37:41 - Don't forget we have the team mixed relay
02:37:44 coming tomorrow here in Bath, tomorrow afternoon,
02:37:48 or the action early afternoon, in fact, coming your way.
02:37:50 So make sure if you're watching this.
02:37:52 - To join us tomorrow.
02:37:55 - Anywhere around the world, really,
02:37:56 that you tune in for it.
02:37:57 You can find details on the UIPM website.
02:38:00 UIPM TV will bring you all the coverage
02:38:04 from that mixed relay.
02:38:07 Big, big smiles.
02:38:08 The podium looks tiny, doesn't it?
02:38:10 It shrunk.
02:38:11 Somebody put it on a hot wash
02:38:12 between the individual medals and the team's medals.
02:38:16 - The Egyptian team is waiting for their coach.
02:38:20 - Yeah, they're just waiting to see
02:38:21 who it is that's gonna come up.
02:38:22 I wonder if they know at this stage
02:38:23 which coach is gonna be elected
02:38:25 or being pushed onto the stage to achieve,
02:38:28 to receive that award.
02:38:29 High fives all around from a British athlete.
02:38:34 Not sure which, because they've all got the wrong tops.
02:38:35 I don't know, it's Miles.
02:38:37 But it's just there, wearing an unknown athlete's top.
02:38:40 I can't work out who it was.
02:38:41 Let's try and look at the initials and work out.
02:38:43 - Is it TB?
02:38:44 - It said what?
02:38:46 - TB.
02:38:47 - TB?
02:38:48 - It's not somebody who competed today, is it?
02:38:50 - No.
02:38:51 - Maybe it's the coaches.
02:38:53 I'm not sure, I'm not sure.
02:38:55 - I'm not sure, I have no idea.
02:38:56 Together, we've not cracked this one, have we?
02:39:01 Let's make sure we don't become detectives, that's for sure.
02:39:03 As we await the final presentation
02:39:05 and as we say, the men's top coach
02:39:07 will get their own little moments
02:39:10 with the three athletes around them.
02:39:11 It's a really nice addition to the medal ceremony,
02:39:14 this, when you get the coach go up there.
02:39:16 They always look a little bit shy going up there,
02:39:18 don't they?
02:39:18 - They are, they're not used to.
02:39:19 - Oh, I shouldn't be receiving this,
02:39:20 but deep down, they love it.
02:39:22 - They do.
02:39:23 Yeah, they do work hard behind the scenes
02:39:27 and they do deserve this award as much as the athletes do.
02:39:31 And of course, the athletes own effort
02:39:34 and dedication goes into this,
02:39:36 but also the people behind the scenes
02:39:39 that don't make it onto the podium
02:39:40 deserve the chance to be recognized as well.
02:39:42 And this is what this award's all about.
02:39:45 Looks like.
02:39:48 - Ready for it right now.
02:39:51 The anthem is struck up again.
02:39:54 - On World Championships, men's coach.
02:39:57 - And actually looking at it,
02:40:00 it's a Great British coach,
02:40:05 not the Egyptian coach.
02:40:06 That caught us by surprise there, didn't it?
02:40:09 Definitely not future detective work
02:40:11 from myself or Mariam, that's for sure.
02:40:13 - Christiane Rudault, UIPM Executive Board Member
02:40:16 and UIPM Coaches Committee Chairman.
02:40:19 - Giving out the gift alongside Dr. Klaus Schurman.
02:40:22 - Representing Great Britain, Russell North.
02:40:26 - And it is Russell North, the Great British coach there
02:40:29 alongside his three athletes.
02:40:30 Charlie Brown is there, Mars Pillage and Joe Chung.
02:40:34 - Very accomplished team,
02:40:40 especially in this World Championships,
02:40:42 corresponding with third place
02:40:44 and this amazing team and Joe Chung in first.
02:40:48 - There'll be a method to the reason why it is
02:40:55 this coach that's up there and not the Egyptian one,
02:40:58 but very, very well done to all.
02:41:00 And all coaches, I think we should give a mention
02:41:01 to all of them because all the teams have put on
02:41:03 an absolute blinder of a show
02:41:05 over the last few days here in Bath.
02:41:07 Not just today, for the finals of this World Championships,
02:41:12 but with the semifinals, the qualifiers,
02:41:14 with the Laser Run World Championships last week as well.
02:41:16 So many coaches to mention,
02:41:18 so many athletes to mention as well.
02:41:20 And they have put on a spectacle
02:41:21 every single step of the way.
02:41:24 The determination, the effort they put into what they do
02:41:27 is there for us all to see.
02:41:30 Couple of eliminations in the riding,
02:41:32 one in the women's final earlier on,
02:41:35 one in the men's final this afternoon.
02:41:37 That painted a big picture there for Roman Popov
02:41:41 in the men's, really, really knocking him out
02:41:44 of all contention, and Michelle Gulyas
02:41:47 earlier on in the women's.
02:41:49 But we've had a fantastic, fantastic day here,
02:41:52 fantastic couple of days of the semifinals,
02:41:54 haven't we, Marianne?
02:41:55 - That is very true.
02:41:56 Roman, before we sign off, I want you to guess
02:41:58 how many hours do you think these athletes put in per week,
02:42:02 dedication, all in dedication of modern printathletes?
02:42:05 - If it's not at least 14 hours a day,
02:42:08 then there's no justice.
02:42:10 - Give me a number and one word.
02:42:11 - I'm gonna say something like,
02:42:13 that they train in total with all aspects of training,
02:42:15 'cause there's various parts.
02:42:17 I'm gonna say they spend about eight hours a day maximum.
02:42:21 - Okay, so?
02:42:22 - Eight hours a day times five,
02:42:24 'cause Saturday and Sunday's off, right?
02:42:26 So eight fives are 40, 40 hours.
02:42:30 - Do you know what, they actually spend upwards
02:42:32 of 50 hours a week.
02:42:33 - No, that's crazy, wow.
02:42:36 - All for this moment right here.
02:42:37 - All for this moment here, and I tell you what,
02:42:39 looking back at it, they will think every single moment
02:42:41 is totally worth it, and we're glad they put in
02:42:43 all that effort, well, for myself and Marianne,
02:42:44 for the entire production team,
02:42:46 and there's a lot of people behind the scenes
02:42:48 that have put this all together, for all the volunteers,
02:42:51 for the judges, the officials, and everyone else.
02:42:53 It's been a spectacular day.
02:42:54 Hopefully you've enjoyed it,
02:42:56 and we'll leave you with some scenes from the action,
02:42:58 but for myself and Marianne,
02:43:00 thank you very much for joining us.
