Jess Carter: Gutted to lose final but proud of England team

  • last year
England's Women's World Cup star Jess Carter has apologised to England fans who were waiting to give the players a heroes welcome at Heathrow Airport, saying she and her teammates had no idea they were there. The Chelsea defender, who helped England make history reaching their first ever final, says she's "super proud" of the team's achievements, despite feeling "gutted" at losing in the final. 00:00 We had no idea that there were fans waiting, we didn't know anything about it.
00:03 I think for me to read some of the messages was really quite sad and kind of disappointing
00:08 that the fact that fans were there waiting, we didn't know about it and for us we love
00:12 to connect with the fans.
00:13 I love playing for Chelsea and the fan base that we've had there is really excellent
00:17 so knowing that they supported me whilst I was out there is really special and makes
00:21 it that bit nicer to come back to.
00:23 I know my time at Chelsea has been very tough, it's been a bit of a slow burner I'd say
00:29 but definitely the past few years I've learnt so much about myself on and off the pitch
00:35 and the kind of demands that are set at Chelsea has really helped me.
00:38 Then going into England you have to perform every single day.
00:41 I'm super proud of what we've achieved, it's obviously been amazing but obviously still
00:46 a little bit gutted and disappointed with getting so far and coming so close and not
00:51 being able to clinch that final bit of success at the end.
00:54 There is clearly a lack of diversity in women's football for sure and that's something that
01:01 I think needs to be worked on from a grassroots level.
