Kingsman star Harris Dickinson's absent father tries to reconnect with his bereaved daughter in this charmingly scrappy British indie that Film Brain feels is a warm hug of a movie.

00:00 Out in the US and the UK this week is Charlotte Regan's debut feature, Scrapper, starring

00:04 Harris Dickinson. 12-year-old Georgie, played by Lola Campbell, has been living alone since

00:09 her mother's death, and has been surviving by stealing bikes and selling them when her

00:13 wayward father, played by Dickinson, reappears from Ibiza. Dickinson gives a nicely understated

00:18 performance as the absent father who finally learns to take responsibility, but the real

00:22 discovery here is Campbell, who gives an exceptional performance for a young performer in their

00:27 debut feature, showing an impressive dramatic range, but also a very deft sense of comic

00:33 timing. Much of the film's success rides on the dynamic between these two actors, which

00:38 starts out frosty and gradually thaws over the film's runtime. Much of the film is from

00:43 the POV of a child's imagination, and takes what could have been a depressing subject

00:47 matter and makes it colourful, energetic and humorous. It's a really sweet and charming

00:52 and yes, scrappy little movie that manages to feel like a warm hug at the end, and it

00:57 It does it in just 82 minutes.
