00:02 - Good evening and welcome to Kentonite Live on KMTV.
00:25 I'm Abbey Hooke.
00:26 Here are your top stories on Monday the 21st of August.
00:30 World Cup woes, but a win for women.
00:34 Kent's future football stars inspired by the Lionesses.
00:38 - So the impact it's gonna have on not just girls in Kent,
00:41 but boys and girls across the whole country
00:43 is gonna be massive.
00:45 - Time to act.
00:47 Kent Fire and Rescue Service response slows
00:50 by the most in England.
00:52 - But it's really important that when we arrive
00:54 at your incident, that we're well trained
00:56 and well equipped.
00:57 - Driving drink and drugs off the road.
01:00 - You're gonna be detained under section 23
01:01 of the Misuse of Drugs Act, okay?
01:03 - Kent police crack down on those
01:05 putting innocent lives at risk.
01:07 - I'm out with the roads policing unit
01:09 as part of the crackdown.
01:10 They are going out on the roads around the clock.
01:13 (upbeat music)
01:16 - But first tonight, they may not have won,
01:26 but Kent still stands behind its Lionesses
01:28 and the county's grassroots clubs
01:30 that are inspired by them.
01:31 In fact, I was at one of them yesterday,
01:33 watching England narrowly miss out
01:35 on their first World Cup title.
01:37 Well, joining me in the studio now with more
01:39 is our Invictus Sport presenter, Bartholomew Hill.
01:42 Bartholomew, our Kent Lionesses did us proud.
01:44 - They did, and we had two of them
01:45 in the England squad this year.
01:46 Of course, Maidstone's Alessia Russo.
01:48 She played in the first half of Sunday's final,
01:51 subbed off at halftime.
01:53 We also had Gravesend born Laura Coombs,
01:56 who didn't appear in the final.
01:58 She was an unused substitute.
02:00 But I mean, despite not winning,
02:02 they did us so proud, didn't they?
02:04 As you mentioned, and you yourself were at,
02:07 was that not the final, but you were at
02:09 one of the watch alongs, one of the many watch alongs
02:12 from the thousands of England fans across Kent
02:13 that were watching.
02:14 I think we can take a look at that now.
02:17 - Nerves, anticipation,
02:20 the weight of the world on their shoulders.
02:23 All in the hopes of holding that cup
02:25 when the whistle blows.
02:27 - Come on, England!
02:30 - Hundreds came to watch at Chatham Town Football Club
02:33 with high hopes for another super strike
02:35 from Maidstone's Alessia Russo.
02:37 So, with millions of eyes on the TV,
02:40 could our Kent connection keep hers on the ball?
02:49 A nail-biting game, mirroring the tense match
02:52 last time England took on Spain
02:54 and became European champions.
02:57 But an early goal from the red side
03:00 set the pace for the rest of play.
03:02 When that halftime whistle blew,
03:05 some of the fans at Chatham Town lost faith,
03:08 but hope remained for those future Lionesses.
03:11 - I don't think it's going as well as we hoped it would.
03:14 I think we look a bit nervous,
03:15 but we know we can bring it back
03:18 because we've done it in the past.
03:19 I think it's just 45 minutes left,
03:22 so we've just got to put everything on the line.
03:24 - Yeah, I feel like maybe changes might need to be made.
03:27 It looks a bit slow,
03:29 and there's a bit of gaps in the field area.
03:31 - I mean, we've had a few chances,
03:33 but I think Spain are on top.
03:37 - I think their possession is much more effective than ours.
03:40 They're keeping the ball better.
03:41 You know, we're forcing it.
03:43 We've had opportunities, which is great,
03:44 but we've not really taken them.
03:46 And I think it's just, it's not flowing very well,
03:49 which sucks, I guess.
03:51 - But there's hope.
03:53 I have hope.
03:54 They'll come out second half,
03:55 and hopefully they'll get a goal.
03:57 - But it wasn't meant to be.
04:01 A double substitution at halftime
04:03 saw Russo on the bench for the rest of the game.
04:06 Spirits were dampened,
04:07 but a penalty save from Mary Earps
04:10 put the roar back in the Lionesses and the fans.
04:14 (crowd cheering)
04:17 The Lionesses just couldn't quite equalise,
04:31 losing to Spain 1-0.
04:33 But staying true to their title
04:35 showed bravery and courage throughout.
04:37 It might not have been a win for our Lionesses
04:41 over in Sydney, but back here in Chatham,
04:43 the women's team have just kicked off
04:44 playing #United in their first game of the season.
04:47 It was an opening day defeat for Chatham Town women
04:51 after another tough battle.
04:53 After watching the Lionesses give it everything,
04:56 giving up was not an option.
04:58 A 69th minute goal from Grant got the crowd cheering,
05:02 but clawing back from 3-1 this late in the game
05:05 was a big ask,
05:06 one these girls just couldn't quite deliver.
05:09 It may not have been the day for football in Sydney
05:12 or in Medway,
05:14 but it has been an incredible four weeks
05:16 for women's football.
05:18 The inspiration that comes with even getting to a final
05:21 is unreal, so the impact it's gonna have on
05:24 not just girls in Kent,
05:25 but boys and girls across the whole country
05:27 is gonna be massive.
05:28 Before it was the focus on
05:29 how do we get girls into the game.
05:31 Now it's all about how do we shift perception
05:34 so that having young girls, older girls,
05:37 females of any age groups within the game
05:39 in different roles, how do we make that the norm?
05:42 The first final in 60 years for England,
05:45 the first game in the National League for Chatham,
05:48 the first few moments in history
05:50 for the roaring success the Lionesses are,
05:53 and the whole nation they've inspired behind them.
05:56 Abbey Hook, for KMTV.
05:59 - Well it looks like everybody had quite a bit of fun there,
06:03 but let's just take a look at some of the key moments
06:04 from Sunday's final.
06:06 The first chance of the game came in the first half
06:08 from Lauren Hemp.
06:09 It could have been England's first goal.
06:10 She's perfectly placed in the box,
06:12 a take from Rachel Daly,
06:13 but of course bounces off the crossbar.
06:16 Such a shame with that one in particular.
06:18 Of course, Spain's Ola Carmona,
06:20 she struck in the first period,
06:21 setting what would be the final score for La Roja,
06:24 and certainly a moment that I don't really wanna look back
06:27 on being an England fan, of course.
06:29 Now England's women, they did take home one trophy
06:32 in the form of the Golden Glove for Mary Earps,
06:34 and this moment really encapsulates
06:36 just why she deserved that,
06:37 being the best goalkeeper of the competition.
06:40 A brilliant save.
06:41 We saw the moment in your report there,
06:42 everybody cheering.
06:44 - That was the loudest anyone was all day
06:45 when that happened.
06:47 - No, that was it, no, exactly.
06:48 Brilliant save.
06:49 She guesses just right, jumps to the left,
06:52 and perfectly takes it there.
06:53 And of course, despite being the first England team
06:57 to make it to a World Cup final in more than 55 years,
07:00 it just wouldn't be for the Lionesses this time.
07:02 And of course, well-deserved, Spain took it home.
07:04 They were the better team on the day.
07:06 - So there's been a huge discussion.
07:09 The whole topic that's really been brought about
07:12 since this final, following the Euros,
07:14 is the Lionesses and what they've done
07:16 for the younger generation of girls and people,
07:18 and young boys, young girls who want to get into football.
07:21 So where do we stand now?
07:23 What's next?
07:23 - Well, what's next for this team
07:25 is they're actually playing in the National,
07:26 the Nations League in the next couple of weeks.
07:28 They'll play against Scotland at home.
07:29 So all this buzz that's arose from the Euros
07:32 and the World Cup, that doesn't have to go away.
07:34 People can carry on following the Lionesses.
07:36 And this is a team that's definitely gonna bounce back
07:38 a few players that were missing in action from the World Cup.
07:41 But don't take it from me.
07:42 We spoke to Rebecca Moore from the Kent FA
07:44 about what she thinks about the future
07:46 of women's football in England.
07:48 - I think everyone puts so much emphasis
07:49 on the 11 players out on the pitch,
07:50 but it's so much more than that.
07:52 Even the WSL, the championship,
07:55 where we are domestically with football
07:57 is leaps and bounds ahead of even Australia being the hosts.
08:00 They don't have a professional league as such.
08:02 So most of their players that are playing
08:04 in top clubs over there are still having
08:06 other part-time jobs just to support income.
08:07 So when you look at what's around the game,
08:10 we're leaps and bounds ahead.
08:12 And we've got a lot of young talent.
08:14 We've kind of gone through that transition now.
08:16 So we've got an awful lot of young 20s.
08:18 So they've got two or three more tournaments
08:20 left in them, so.
08:21 - Well, just a bit more sport to mention now
08:23 on the Kent Spitfires have continued their charge
08:25 in the Metro Bank One Day Cup,
08:27 beating Essex Eagles by 60 runs at Canterbury.
08:30 On Saturday, the 2022 title holders kept alive
08:33 their chances at reaching this year's knockout stages,
08:36 largely helped by an unbeaten 137 runs
08:39 in 128 balls from Jack Leaning.
08:42 After winning the toss and electing to bat first,
08:44 the Spitfires posted 287 for eight,
08:47 the largest innings run score for our county side
08:50 in the 50-over competition so far this year.
08:53 Essex couldn't quite reach the target, however.
08:55 Arun Nijjar holed out to substitute Jad Singh
08:58 on the leg side boundary off Stuart for nine.
09:00 Kent must now win against Hampshire on Tuesday
09:03 and hope Lanx lose against Buckinghamshire
09:05 to reach the knockouts.
09:06 Well, that's it for me with the sport for now.
09:08 I'll be back with Invicta Sport at six o'clock.
09:10 (upbeat music)
09:14 - Bartholomew with the sport there next.
09:22 Home office data has revealed that Kent Fire
09:24 and Rescue Service has had the biggest increase
09:27 in response time across the UK.
09:29 Well, earlier I spoke with Mark Wrist,
09:31 the director for response at Kent Fire and Rescue Service,
09:34 and I started off by asking him
09:35 why there's been this increase.
09:38 - We have a mix of rural roads and urban roads,
09:40 increasing traffic flows, and of course,
09:43 the impacts on major roads of being our coastal county
09:47 that feeds into Europe.
09:49 But the attendance time for primary fires
09:51 is just one small measure of all the work that we do
09:54 for the residents in Kent and Medway.
09:56 And we are facing an increasing range
09:59 of diverse and complex incidents.
10:02 And also whilst we've seen our attendance times
10:04 at primary fires increase,
10:05 and we're not denying that for one minute,
10:08 we haven't seen a resulting increase in negative outcomes.
10:12 So fire deaths, fire injuries,
10:14 and the severity of fires continue to decline.
10:18 And that's down to our investment in training and equipment
10:21 in our professional firefighters who do an excellent job
10:24 when we arrive at an incident.
10:26 - And of course, you're the professional.
10:27 I don't know what it takes to fight a fire,
10:30 but I imagine response time is a key part of it,
10:33 is a key part of stopping that fire spread.
10:35 And I mean, traffic has been a thing
10:37 for a good number of years now.
10:39 It's an issue we all face.
10:40 So is it the type of incidents you're going to
10:44 and why are they changing?
10:46 - Well, if we could just take a step back
10:49 before the incident,
10:50 because probably some of the most important work we do
10:52 is with our prevention and protection teams
10:54 to stop incidents happening in the first place,
10:56 to educate the public and to educate business owners.
10:59 And then once we have the incident, you're right,
11:02 it's important to get to incidents promptly,
11:04 but we have water rescues, rescues from height,
11:07 dealing with the effects of climate change
11:09 and new fuels and so on.
11:11 So that does mean that the service is busy,
11:13 but it's really important that when we arrive
11:15 at your incident, that we're well-trained and well-equipped.
11:18 And what we do when we get there is at least as important
11:23 as arriving promptly, probably more so.
11:25 - That was Mark Riss there,
11:27 Director for Response at Kent Fire and Rescue.
11:30 Now, in the average time to respond to an incident
11:32 increased by three minutes and five seconds
11:35 at Kent Fire and Rescue, the highest across England.
11:37 But it's now time for a very quick break,
11:39 but coming up, a county-wide crackdown begins this week
11:42 with around the clock patrols of motorists
11:44 suspected to be driving under the influence
11:46 of drugs and alcohol.
11:48 Our reporter has more after this break.

15:04 - Hello and welcome back to Kent Tonight live on KMTV.
15:13 Claiming innocent lives every year,
15:15 driving under the influence of drink or drugs
15:18 is something Kent police say is unacceptable.
15:21 A county-wide crackdown has begun this week
15:23 with around the clock patrols of motorists
15:25 suspected to be driving under the influence.
15:28 They say severe consequences will be coming
15:30 to those who break the law.
15:32 Gabriel Morris spent the day with Kent police's road unit.
15:35 - Kent police's week-long crackdown on drink
15:39 and drug drivers starts today.
15:42 The force says it is a year-round priority for them,
15:45 but they wanna make these roads safer.
15:48 The latest data we have for road fatalities is from 2021.
15:52 And that showed for the Department for Transport
15:54 that it was a 12-year high,
15:56 with an estimated 260 people losing their lives
16:00 due to a driver over the alcohol limit.
16:03 Now this latest crackdown will be enforced
16:05 by the road safety unit from Kent police.
16:08 I spent the day with one of their patrols
16:10 to find out exactly how they catch drivers
16:13 over the drink and drug limits.
16:15 - It's just this vehicle in front.
16:20 It came past a little bit quick,
16:22 and now he seems to be messing around
16:23 with doing something in the car,
16:26 which is making his manner of driving a little bit,
16:28 sort of swerving a little bit across his lane.
16:31 It seems to be that he's messing around,
16:33 but again, that would maybe constitute to an offence
16:35 of not in proper control
16:37 or driving without due care and attention.
16:39 - On the lookout for drivers
16:41 under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
16:44 In June alone, Kent police made 114 excess drink arrests
16:49 and a further 72 arrests for excess drug offences.
16:53 Now I'm out with the roads policing unit
16:55 as part of the crackdown.
16:57 They are going out on the roads around the clock,
17:00 looking for drivers under the influence
17:01 of alcohol or drugs.
17:04 - People that are under the influence of alcohol or drugs
17:08 tend to be more aware of what they're doing.
17:11 So they try and drive a bit more cautiously,
17:13 which almost makes them stick out more.
17:15 - Anyone stopped can be searched or tested
17:17 for alcohol or illegal substances.
17:20 - As I say, certainly people will take that risk
17:23 and maybe have one or two drinks
17:25 and think it's acceptable,
17:26 but they then run the risk of being pulled over
17:30 or being involved in a collision.
17:32 That's not even their fault.
17:34 - One of the biggest things we struggle with at the moment
17:36 is drug drive.
17:38 I think people finding that cannabis
17:40 is more and more socially acceptable for them.
17:43 - And some 10 minutes into our journey,
17:45 an e-bike caught the officer's attention.
17:48 The number plate was blocked.
17:50 - Yeah, he's got a plate on it.
17:54 - It's tiny, isn't it?
17:56 (car horn honking)
17:59 - Hey, you all right?
18:08 You smell of cannabis, my friend?
18:11 - Yeah.
18:12 - Why is that?
18:13 - There's no reason, mate.
18:13 You're gonna be detained under section 23
18:14 of the Misuse of Drugs Act, okay?
18:16 - Chaps just handed that over.
18:19 I think it's just a bit of cannabis.
18:21 Redmond's gone over to him just to speak to him
18:22 about the fact his license plate is quite obscured
18:25 from the wheel.
18:26 Couldn't really read what he was saying
18:29 as we were behind it.
18:30 And obviously then there's the smell of cannabis,
18:31 which is what we were saying.
18:33 One thing leads to another.
18:34 He will be arrested if he fails the test.
18:36 We'll have to conduct the roadside test first.
18:39 That test will test for two types of drugs,
18:40 cannabis and cocaine.
18:42 The main one we're looking at in this circumstance
18:44 is cannabis.
18:45 - He was later arrested for drug possession offenses.
18:48 He'll be taken into custody now for further questioning
18:51 and a blood test.
18:53 And in other cases, consequences can be severe.
18:57 Last month, a motorist received a fine
18:59 of more than a thousand pound
19:01 and was disqualified for driving for 14 months
19:04 after pleading guilty to driving
19:06 under the influence of alcohol on the A2 near Cobham
19:09 in December, 2022.
19:11 - My message is to use a taxi, use a cab,
19:13 use any form of public transport to get home
19:16 rather than running the risk of driving
19:17 whilst over the limit.
19:18 The impact is obvious
19:19 and it's potentially fatal in the wrong circumstances.
19:24 - And let's pick up on that, it is fatal, isn't it?
19:26 - Yeah, absolutely.
19:27 It's one of what we call the fatal four.
19:29 So it's one of the four most likely to cause fatalities
19:33 to cause the collision, which causes fatalities.
19:35 So it's a big thing that we do, target.
19:38 - And it seems the message from Kent Police
19:40 is very much clear.
19:41 Don't risk it.
19:43 They say it's simply unacceptable
19:45 and action will be taken, as I've seen today.
19:49 - Gabriel Morris for KMTV in Maidstone.
19:51 - Next, a motorcyclist has died following a crash
19:55 on the A2 near Faversham this weekend.
19:58 Emergency services were called to the scene on Saturday
20:00 following reports of a collision
20:02 involving a black Aprilia motorcycle
20:04 and a grey Skoda Fabia.
20:06 Despite the efforts of paramedics,
20:08 a man in his 50s was declared dead at the scene.
20:11 His next of kin have been informed
20:12 and Kent Police are now seeking dash cam footage.
20:17 The parents of television host Phil Spencer
20:20 have been killed in an accident
20:21 at the Canterbury farm he grew up on.
20:24 The location, location, location presenter
20:26 posted an emotional tribute on Instagram,
20:28 revealing they'd been on their way to lunch.
20:31 Richard Spencer and his wife, Anne, both in their 80s,
20:33 lost their lives when their car toppled off a bridge
20:36 and into a river in Littlebourn.
20:38 Kent Police says officers attended
20:39 along with other emergency services.
20:42 A third person, a woman in her 60s,
20:44 was in the vehicle and sustained minor injuries.
20:47 Now, a Medway charity which helps the homeless
20:50 and victims of domestic violence
20:52 has been targeted by thieves.
20:54 Second Chance Medway, a homeless prevention
20:56 and food security scheme, provides housing,
20:58 support and food donations for people
21:01 at its community hub in Chatham.
21:03 £60 was stolen from the till and fridges were emptied.
21:07 Well, Caitlin Webb from the charity
21:08 joins me in the studio now.
21:10 Caitlin, really sad news to hear what's happened.
21:13 How devastating is this for Second Chance Medway?
21:18 It's such a hit to the charity,
21:20 not just because of their such hardworking,
21:23 well-meaning staff and volunteers that are there,
21:25 but also because all of these products
21:28 and the meat and the baby powder
21:31 and all these things that got stolen
21:33 are there to help people who really need it.
21:35 So not only is it quite a devastating blow for the staff
21:38 to feel like their safety and the security
21:41 of where they work has been violated,
21:44 it also has restricted what help we can support people with.
21:48 We don't have a lot of the stock
21:50 because we haven't been able to replace it.
21:52 So it's had double burden on the staff
21:56 not being able to feel, you know,
21:58 and volunteers being able to feel safe
21:59 when they're, you know, helping out
22:01 and, you know, spending their spare time
22:03 to help these people.
22:05 And then we can't help people as much as we would have
22:08 as we have such a shortage of stock
22:11 because of this.
22:12 - It's an almost impossible question to answer.
22:15 Why do you think this is happening?
22:17 Why do you think you've been targeted?
22:19 - I don't know.
22:21 It is, you're right, it is such an impossible question
22:23 considering the fact that if these people
22:26 were desperate for food,
22:27 were they desperate for detergent
22:30 or for, you know, the baby powder that they stole,
22:33 we, you know, the shop and the organisation,
22:37 the charity is designed to help those
22:40 who are in desperate need of it.
22:41 So it may have just been an opportunity,
22:45 but I like to think the fact that I really don't understand
22:47 means that obviously, you know, it's very,
22:51 it's someone who, you know, definitely,
22:54 either they took the opportunity
22:55 because it's, you know, on the high street,
22:57 it's quite a prevalent, you know, neighbourhood
23:00 and you can really tell like what the organisation is.
23:04 But yeah, I have no idea.
23:06 And I just wish, you know, we found more about it.
23:10 Kent Police have been great.
23:12 They've come to the property.
23:14 They have dusted fingerprints on the till
23:17 and they've also, you know,
23:19 checked other, you know, footage and stuff around.
23:22 But unfortunately, due to the fact that the building,
23:25 we didn't have shutters, we didn't have CCTV.
23:28 So there's a lot of security that we would have,
23:31 we're a charity, so there's a lot we couldn't afford.
23:34 But we have had since obviously this incident
23:37 and reaching out to local organisations.
23:40 I'd like to thank, there's a Dan Copping,
23:42 who said he's gonna help fund the blinds,
23:45 so the security shutters.
23:47 And also there's a Dom Elms, who's our gas engineer,
23:50 who's been so amazing trying to get some of the lost stock
23:54 and like literally, you know, working round
23:56 and trying to, yeah, trying to help ends meet,
23:59 you know, when it's already quite hard
24:01 to make ends meet for everyone involved.
24:04 - Well, it sounds like an extortion output
24:07 if you were to do these things yourself,
24:09 considering you are a charity
24:11 and you weren't prepared for something like this.
24:14 It's good to hear that Kent Police are working with you
24:16 and you're able to benefit from Kind Generations as well
24:19 and you also have a GoFundMe page, I'm hoping.
24:21 Thank you very much, Caitlin, for coming in.
24:23 Really appreciate your time
24:24 and hopefully you can get that stock back.
24:27 Now it's time for us to take a look
24:30 at the weather forecast.
24:32 (upbeat music)
24:35 Well, it's looking fairly mild tonight,

24:58 And the next couple of days looks sunny.

25:01 so make sure you enjoy the sun on Wednesday, highs of 26.
25:04 (upbeat music)
25:07 Thousands took to Medway last week for the annual Pride event.
25:18 Saturday saw the town's sixth day of celebrations.
25:20 A parade in the morning took to the celebrations
25:23 to the castle.
25:24 There was a host of entertainment was on offer,
25:26 including former X Factor winner, Sam Bailey.
25:29 The event was so popular that the first two rounds
25:32 of release tickets sold out within 12 hours.
25:35 Be another one next year.
25:36 And before we go, take a look at this stunning display
25:39 from the Red Arrows in Folkestone.
25:41 It was all part of Folkestone Air Show over the weekend
25:45 and their performance included forming a large heart
25:48 in the sky with an arrow going through it.
25:50 You can see that on the screen now.
25:52 But their appearance in Kent was in doubt
25:54 after engineering issues grounded the fleet
25:56 earlier in the week.
25:58 The show also saw an RAF Typhoon
26:01 and the World War II aircraft forming
26:03 a Battle of Britain display.
26:05 Exciting scenes over Kent.
26:06 Well, that's all we've got time for this evening
